/forloveofchildren For Love of Children FY15 ANNUAL REPORT @FLOC_DC NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORING PROGRAM FLOC SCHOLARS PROGRAM LEADERS IN ACTION AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM FLOC’s Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) continues to provide better outcomes for DC youth by matching them with dedicated volunteers. This powerful combination allows FLOC to leverage proven intervention curricula with the one-on-one attention of a volunteer tutor. NTP was able to extend its program to a new site at Jubilee Housing Center. The FLOC Scholars Program serves students in grades 6-12 and beyond, helping them gain the skills needed to graduate from high school, pursue higher education, and succeed in college and career. Through weekly workshops, individualized academic advising, distance learning seminars, and professional development workshops, students are exposed to experiences, information, and activities that build persistence skills to help them progress through their educational journey and into a chosen career. During the 2014-2015 school year, the Outdoor Education Center (OEC) served a total of 45 students – 21 at Charles Town Middle School and 24 at Harpers Ferry Middle School. The focus of the program is civic engagement, healthy lifestyle choices, environmental advocacy, teambuilding, and leadership development. The additional students served by this program meant that, in total, 382 students were served in FLOC’s tutoring program. These students made an average of one year’s grade-level improvement after just three and a half months of steady tutoring. NTP is excited to continue serving more students and secure better outcomes for all DC youth. Results like the ones listed show the potential of this model. 1 out of 4 students In NTP Math programs closed their gap completely, progressing to their proper grade level. 1 out of 5 students Made at least two years of grade-level improvement. 6 out of 10 students In middle and high school narrowed their grade-level gap in reading comprehension. SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: A’TYRA FTSF SPOTLIGHT: ALEM A’Tyra Wilson came to the FLOC Scholars Program when she was in 9th grade and not planning to go to college. She was shy and it took her time to warm up to the other students and staff, who realized that her shyness stemmed from her being several years behind in reading and math. Because of these challenges and little support provided by her school, she considered dropping out. FLOC staff helped her find another school and connected her to the Neighborhood Tutoring Program. This year, she’s on the honor roll at a new school and at FLOC three nights a week. She says “I want to go to college now. I am thinking about becoming a lawyer.” Alem Bekele, who initially received the Fred Taylor Scholarship in Spring 2013, celebrated progress in her postsecondary journey. With FLOC’s guidance and support, she successfully matriculated for two years at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and consistently earned above a 3.0 GPA, all while working and caring for her grandmother. She celebrated the completion of her studies at NOVA and was accepted into Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a four-year institution. She is looking forward to continued success, with the goal of earning her bachelor’s degree and starting her career. During the 2014-2015 academic year, FLOC Scholars served a total of 184 middle school, high school, and postsecondary students. 100% on time graduation rate for high school seniors The after-school program offers experiential opportunities and lessons the students would not otherwise learn about in their typical school curricula. One highlight was the third annual Spring Break trip for students. The students visited two local farms and the Global Village in Sharpsburg, Maryland. 73% of students Improved their knowledge of geography and global cultures and traditions. 89% of students Improved their knowledge of environmental and sustainable living practices. 100% of students Participated in a civic project making ornaments for local nursing home residents. FRED TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM SUMMER CAMP This year, FLOC awarded seventeen students the Fred Taylor Scholarship. The scholarship is an award for up to $2,000 that students can renew for up to five years while they are pursuing their postsecondary degree. The scholarship winners will attend a wide variety of postsecondary institutions, including The George Washington University, Towson University, and Montgomery College. One of the things that makes FLOC unique is our Outdoor Education Center. We give our students the opportunity to attend camp for free every summer. This year we piloted a “Non-Cognitive Camp” with our high school Scholars students. This three-day camp encompassed various workshops to develop non-cognitive skills such as optimism, perseverance, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity. From the post-tests and conversations with the students, we learned a lot about the program, and their feedback will help us create an even more powerful experience for future participants. $57,986 in Fred Taylor Scholarships Awarded VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: NICOLE MURYN CLEMENT Nicole Muryn Clement knew not long after moving to DC that she wanted to give back to her new community. Nicole could tell that FLOC was different, as they wanted to do more than “homework help.” She has continued to volunteer at FLOC because of the organization’s constant work innovating how it teaches students. She believes FLOC’s revamped math curriculum has made a positive difference in students’ ability to learn and progress. It’s this commitment to improvement that makes her believe in FLOC and continue to volunteer. She is amazed by the perseverance and commitment the students have to learning, and she enjoys seeing students improve as they progress through FLOC’s programming. 76 students participated in summer camps 461 VOLUNTEERS in 2014-2015, including Summer Programs 1763 COLUMBIA ROAD, NW, FIRST FLOOR WASHINGTON, DC 20009 FY15 ANNUAL REPORT FY15 BOARD OF DIRECTORS LIST Giselle Pole, Chair Connie Golleher, Vice-Chair Stephanie Anderson, Treasurer Peter Hahn, Secretary Matthew Blocher Christian Campagnuolo Clark Dixon John Downs Jeff Fergus Sherry Gilbert Adam Horvath Colin Kimpel Tim Miller Peter Nothstein Arlene Farber Sirkin Eva Stark Chapman Taylor Fred Taylor Kate Vogt FY15 FRED TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP FUND BOARD Michael Spencer, Chair Susan Green, Vice Chair Kate Vogt, Treasurer Sherrill Taylor, Secretary Stephanie Anderson Unique Bexley Tony Keith Nick Lee Brittany Okafor Donna Fitzgerald Shuler Amanda Sow Grace Taylor WWW.FLOC.ORG | 202-462-8686 FY15 DONOR LISTS INDIVIDUALS $10,000 OR MORE Jeff Fergus & Jo Ousterhout Joe Higdon & Ellen Sudow William & Mary Mason F.
