MUSIC IN PLYMOUTH featuring the Minnesota Orchestra Hilde Performance Center Tuesday, July 3 5:00 pm Presented by the Plymouth Civic League and the City of Plymouth musicinplymouth.org Premiere Sponsor ™ Inaugural Music in Plymouth Award PRESENTED BY The Plymouth Civic League The Plymouth Civic League is pleased to announce the creation of the Music in Plymouth Award to be presented for the first time tonight. The award honors an individual, group or company that has made significant contributions to the ongoing success of Music in Plymouth, within one or more of the following areas of excellence: vision and leadership, service and volunteerism, financial support. The 2012 honorees are Jayne and Al Hilde, Jr., and Carlson & The Carlson Family Foundation. The Plymouth Civic League is deeply grateful for their vision in creating Music in Plymouth and for their remarkable support of the event for 40 years. A donation will be made to the Music in Plymouth Endowment Fund in each recipient’s honor and their names placed on the MIPEF monument in the Hilde Performance Center amphitheater. Al & Jayne Hilde, Jr. Curt Carlson In 1972 as former mayor of Plymouth and local businessman, Al Hilde, Jr. had the foresight to see the City of Plymouth was lacking in identity. He approached Curtis A. Carlson, businessman and developer of the Minneapolis Industrial Park in Plymouth, to help him plan a free community event of high quality musical entertainment for the citizens of Plymouth. The intent was to build community pride and spirit for the sleepy suburb. Hilde formed a volunteer committee to bring the Minnesota Orchestra to Plymouth. In three years that committee organized officially into a non-profit, the Plymouth Civic League, which 40 years later is still bringing Music in Plymouth to the community. More recently, Hilde gifted the PCL one million dollars to build a state of the art band shell for Music in Plymouth and other community events. The Hilde Performance Center was dedicated and given to the City on the 30th anniversary of MIP in 2002. On the 35th anniversary the Hildes seeded the establishment of the Music in Plymouth Endowment Fund with a gift of $180,000. Curt Carlson passed the torch of community service to his company, Carlson Companies, to continue to serve Plymouth by providing leadership as directors on the Plymouth Civic League Board of Directors continuously for 40 years; some of these individuals have served as officers or chairs of the MIP event. In addition Carlson has supported the PCL with financial contributions continuously since 1972 and in 2002 Carlson was the Premier Sponsor of Music in Plymouth with a donation of $30,000. Hilde Performance Center Ten years ago, on the 30th anniversary of Music in Plymouth, the Plymouth Civic League was proud to partner with the City of Plymouth in the dedication of the Hilde Performance Center. The Hilde Center has become the “summer home” for all Plymouth community groups as well as the premiere suburban venue for the greater Twin Cities area professional and amateur presentations. It is the permanent home for Music in Plymouth, featuring the Minnesota Orchestra. It is the focal place for the families of the Plymouth community to gather for sharing cultural events in a dedicated place in the central Plymouth civic area. From the plaque installed at the Center: “The Hilde Performance Center” commemorates many individuals who performed outstanding service to the citizens of Plymouth during my tenyear mayoralty. These were the formative years for Plymouth when the transition was made from a rural area to a vibrant suburb. Their vision, dedication and hard work made Plymouth into a livable, well planned, and economically strong city. This “performance center” has a double meaning. It honors those who performed high public service for Plymouth in the past, and it is a place where many performances will take place in the future. In this beautiful setting, our citizens will experience Music in Plymouth and other activities produced by our citizens and for our citizens. The names on this plaque are just a few of the exemplary citizens who performed outstanding service to Plymouth. May we also pay tribute to the numerous other citizens who have selflessly given a portion of their lives to make Plymouth such a special community.” Al Hilde, Jr. Francis Bauer Otto Bonestroo Curtis L. The fund was seeded with a generous gift from former Plymouth Mayor Al Hilde, Jr. and his wife, Jayne, along with a number of Founding Contributors from the community. A recognition monument honoring these Founding Contributors was unveiled on the Hilde Performance Center grounds in 2011. Ongoing recognition will be added to the monument going forward for contributors at various defined levels. In honor of MIP’s 40th anniversary a matching grant was offered by Satellite Industries, Inc. A number of donors responded to the challenge increasing the endowment by more than $20,000. The MIPEF board wishes to thank those donors for their generous gifts. Most of the settlers were farmers who produced hay needed to feed the vast horse and cow population of Minneapolis. Old Town Hall Plymouth Today Plymouth is nationally recognized for its quality of life. Located just 12 miles northwest of Minneapolis, Plymouth offers extensive trails and parks, picturesque open spaces, strong neighborhoods, diverse recreation programs, highly regarded school districts, a variety of local businesses and easy access to downtown Minneapolis and its wide array of cultural and sports venues. Plymouth was named Money Magazine’s number one Best Place to Live in 2008 for cities with populations of 50,000 to 300,000. The city, which is home to 70,576 people, stayed in the top dozen when the magazine repeated the rankings in 2010. In addition to being a popular place to live, Plymouth is also the choice for many businesses. The city is home to a thriving commercial-industrial base that provides nearly 50,000 jobs. City Hall 2006 “Music in Plymouth is our signature event. For 40 years, it has been showcasing our community spirit, volunteerism and all that is best about Plymouth. It’s a cherished tradition that gets better and better.” - Diane Evans, Director of Parks & Recreation Plymouth City Council Welcome to the Hilde Performance Center! By working together, we have created an event that builds community, makes memories and celebrates life in Plymouth.” - Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik • The site is closed to the public for maintenance and event preparation until 7 am the day of the event. Placement of blankets, chairs, tarps and/or other items on the grounds is not allowed before that time. If items are found on the grounds before 7 am, they will be removed. 4 www.musicinplymouth.org “Plymouth’s “Open Air Concert” this past week was an outstanding pleasure. The Minnesota Orchestra, Mayor Hilde, the Concert Committee, and the businesses of the MIP [Minneapolis Industrial Park] all deserve a vote of thanks for conceiving and presenting this event.” -James W. Edwards, Plymouth From the Brooklyn Park Post, July 5, 1973 Dense Crowd, MIP First Ampitheater Music in Plymouth, 1973 (Courtesy of the Minnesota Orchestra Archives at the University of Minnesota libraries) “I’m really proud to live in a community that has the values and vision to create an endowment fund to preserve our Music in Plymouth tradition into the future. These types of events make a community feel like home.” -Roger Frisch, Minnesota Orchestra Associate Concertmaster and Plymouth resident “In terms of outdoor concerts, Music in Plymouth is in a class of its own. Performing in the Hilde Center before an enthusiastic audience of 15,000 people on a pretty summer night is a great experience. A lot of people in Plymouth work very hard to make this annual concert a reality and, as both a musician and Plymouth resident, I’m appreciative of their efforts.” -Manny Laureano, Principal Trumpet and Plymouth Resident Music in Plymouth Poster, 1973 Youth Conductors with conductor Courtney Lewis Music in Plymouth “40th Anniversary” 2012 Minnesota Orchestra, 2010 5 Music in Plymouth Poster, 2007 40th Anniversary TUESDAY, JULY 3, 2012, 5:00 P.M. The 451st Army Band, based at Fort Snelling, will kick off today’s event with a polished, patriotic program. Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theater will thrill all ages with their largerthan-life puppets which “draw inspiration from the world’s traditions of puppet and mask theatre and its lively roots in transformative ritual and street theatre.” Singer-songwriter Scottie Miller, a graduate of Wayzata High School, follows with his “gumbo of piano driven blues-soul.” T-6 will provide aerial entertainment with their WWII aircraft flyover. The high-energy vocals and instrumentalists of local favorite The R-Factor (formerly Rupert’s Orchestra) will close out the pre-Minnesota Orchestra entertainment. Following the incomparable Minnesota Orchestra, in its 40th consecutive performance at Music in Plymouth, fire-dancers from Funtime Funktions will combine flames, illuminated body movement and intricate partner choreography in a fire show just prior to the fireworks display. The Plymouth Civic League was formed in 1973 by the Plymouth City Council to promote the identity of Plymouth, Minnesota. The League was formed to sponsor an event that would enable the residents of Plymouth to get together for an evening of free musical entertainment. It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Music in Plymouth. We are glad that you can join us for this wonderful night of entertainment and the grand finale fireworks display. This is the 40th Anniversary year that the Minnesota Orchestra has performed for our musical enjoyment. To enhance the visual experience, the PCL has mounted two jumbo screens for a live feed of this evening’s festivities. We are also pleased to announce that MPR is taping the orchestra’s performance for delayed broadcast on July 4 on MPR radio…Classical 99.5 FM. In recognition of the MIP 40th anniversary and 15 years of providing the fireworks entertainment for MIP, Pyrotechnic Display is donating a special ‘red, white and blue’ segment for this evening’s show. The PCL would like to thank MOSAIC, the premiere sponsor for Music in Plymouth 2012, for making this 40th anniversary celebration a memorable one. Look for the roving crowd entertainers; check out the community and corporate sponsored activity booths at the rear of the site presented by Citizen’s Independent Bank, Health Source of Plymouth Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab, Prudential Financial, US Bank, The Foursome Fine Apparel and Shoes, WestHealth, and Fourth Baptist Church. Visit Battery 1, 1st US Artillery, the living history presentation of the American Civil War Soldier from 1861-1865. Youth may also try musical instruments at the Sound Factory brought to us by WAMSO – the Volunteer Organization of the Minnesota Orchestra; youth, ages 6-12, are also invited to put their names in a drawing at the PCL tent for a chance to conduct the Minnesota Orchestra tonight. Conducting the Minnesota Orchestra this evening is Associate Conductor, Courtney Lewis. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Mr. Lewis has worked with orchestras and chamber ensembles from London to Venezuela, earning recognition as one of today’s emerging conductors. In July 2011 Lewis was one of only four conductors from around the world selected by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for its 2011-12 Dudamel Fellowship Program. For ten weeks this year, he has worked alongside Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and conducted the ensemble in multiple performances in March 2012. Lewis is also the founder and music director of Boston’s acclaimed Discovery Ensemble, a chamber orchestra that introduces inner-city school children to classical music while bringing new and unusual repertoire to established concert audiences. Mr. Lewis attended the University of Cambridge, originally studying composition and clarinet. After completing a master’s degree, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music. We are also honored to have Henry Charles Smith, who conducted the first Music In Plymouth, 1973, guest conduct the Armed Forces Salute this evening. The 16th Music in Plymouth 5K was held on Saturday, June 30th. This annual event draws hundred of runners and walkers – individuals, families and groups from all over the region, with all proceeds going directly to support Music in Plymouth. The first-place finishers in all age categories will be recognized here tonight. KleinBank is the proud sponsor for the 5K. Concession sales help support this event. He serves as host not only of the event, but of the Minnesota Orchestra’s performance which will be taped this evening and broadcast tomorrow at 8pm on Classical MPR 99.5 FM as part of their Fourth of July programming. Twin Cities favorite, tenor Robert Robinson, will join the Minnesota Orchestra for the Star-Spangled Banner. Limited concessions will be available also. Because of conflicts in scheduling, the Minnesota Orchestra will not appear; other musical groups will perform. 7 F Blue Liberty Composed By: Steve Heitzeg With Blue Liberty, I aspired to compose a lyrical piece that would address the true multidimensional spirit of liberty. It’s a work that is patriotic (expressing love of country) as well as matriotic (expressing love of the earth). Why “blue”? The work was premiered in the open air; it offers a reflection on the sad events of 9/11; blue is the universal color for world peace; for the lakes of Plymouth and Minnesota as well as the blue planet; an ode to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Blue Liberty evokes, for me, images of humanity—whether immigrants before the Statue of Liberty or all people across the earth—living peaceably together. – Steve Heitzeg, composer To celebrate this 40th anniversary of Music in Plymouth, the Plymouth Civic League (PCL) has chosen to expand the entertainment portion of 35 years MusicWe in Plymouth been a unifying this For evening’s event. have alsohas mounted a secondthread jumbotoscreen for aour livegrowing feed of community. the entertainment, enhancing accessibility For each of thosethe 35 visual years the PCL to stage forbrought the expanded site.
