This Inaugural Mayoral Ball reception seeks to recognize and acknowledge all the past mayors of the town of
New Amsterdam. It endeavors to bring together the friends, relatives and families of these distinguished
individuals who made lasting contributions to the town. The event raises vital funds to assist in the rebuilding
of the town we once called home. The Mayoral Ball will be an annual event in which succeeding receptions
will honor individual former mayors.
About New Amsterdam
New Amsterdam, the quiet township nestling at the confluence of the Berbice and Canje Rivers, once proudly
served as the capital of Berbice. Originally built alongside Fort Nassau 55 miles up the Berbice River, the town
was moved to its present location around 1784. The first recorded ordinance related to the township was dated
11th January, 1971, and required those who were given lots to build up their land and provide drainage. A
Board of Management was established in 1825 to manage the town. This lasted until 1844 when a Board of
Superintendence was established. The town was incorporated into a municipality in 1891 and Mr. Neil Ross
McKinnon K.C., the president of the Board, became the first Mayor of New Amsterdam. New Amsterdam has
had 64 mayoralships and 41 mayors since then, of which only three (3) are still alive. [Archives of the NA Town Council.]
About the Council of Friends of New Amsterdam
Amsterdam (COFONA)
The Council of Friends of New Amsterdam (COFONA) held its inaugural forum on Saturday, September 15th,
2010 to dialogue on issues plaguing the township and to organize on the town’s behalf. About 75 persons
attended that forum along with the current Mayor of New Amsterdam, Mr. Claude Henry. COFONA
purposes to network among individuals, associations, groups and other entities to assist in the development of
the township and its environs. Last December, four members (Dr. Leonard Lewis, Ms. Claire Floris Wilson,
Ms. Ruthel Hamilton-Fung, and Mr. Denis Shepard) represented COFONA on a fact finding mission to New
Amsterdam to hear from the residents, officials, business leaders, and other stakeholders concerning the
challenges facing the township. The visit confirmed the necessity of helping to empower the residents and to
help create the climate and environment to make it conducive for investments and the creation of jobs in the
town. We are embarking on that mission.
About the New Amsterdam Mayoral Ball
The New Amsterdam Mayoral Ball will be an annual event acknowledging and celebrating the many and
unsung contributions of the former mayors and leaders of New Amsterdam. We commence this inaugural
celebration by acknowledging all the former mayors of the town. In subsequent years the contributions of
individuals will be singled out and honored. This effort serves to remind ourselves, and succeeding generations,
of the significant role the township and its environs played in the history and culture of the nation. Join us as
we commence this journey.
A souvenir journal will be published for this event. This keepsake memorabilia will highlight the
accomplishments of these former leaders of the town. In addition, families from New Amsterdam are
encouraged to highlight their families and loved ones by taking out ads in the journal. Individuals, families,
businesses, associations, churches, and organizations are encouraged to feature family accomplishments,
promote family names, memorialize loved ones, and promote their business in the souvenir journal. After this
initial publication, the journal will be published once every five (5) years. Details for advertising in the journal
are described below.
