Annual Report 2013
When a small group of community
leaders saw a need for a democratically
led federation to raise money on behalf
of small, grassroots nonprofits, little
did they know what a dynamic group
it would be 15 years later. Thanks to
our corporate partners, member
agencies and dedicated volunteers,
Community Shares is able to mark its
fifteenth anniversary.
Partners for Clean Streams participated
in its first Community Shares workplace
campaign in Fall 2012. They approached
the campaign with maximum enthusiasm
and made a significant number of
in-person presentations. In March 2013,
our member agencies voted to accept
Bethany House, a domestic violence
shelter, for the Fall 2013 Campaign.
Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to
Family Promise, as they made a decision
to dedicate their efforts to reorganizing
their operations.
Our Fall 2012 Campaign saw a record
number of workplace presentations,
with an increase in pledged totals from
$177,845 to $194,300. Bowling Green
State University invited us to participate
in the President’s Leadership Breakfast
3%
and Campaign Kickoff. The results were
tremendous, as giving at BGSU rose
from $11,000 to $15,000! The State of
Ohio Combined Charitable Campaign
saw our largest number ever of agencies
included, and giving rose from $32,500
to $44,000. Thanks to the hard work
of many, many people, we saw a
tremendous giving year.
We also experienced a phenomenal
fundraising year. Our 3rd Annual
Share-a-Glass event netted over $4,200,
which was 40% over our goal. Our
2nd Annual Share Our Dreams netted
a record-breaking $17,000, which was
44% over our goal. A key component
of that success is our new partnership
with Toledo Harley-Davidson, who
donated the venue. Harley has also
become a year-round partner and has
offered us and our member agencies
many other fundraising opportunities.
In December, we began reaching out
to non-workplace supporters with our
year-end Friends of Community Shares
appeal. We got off to a great start this
year, with the help of our Board, and
hope to develop this into a significant
source of operational support in years
to come.

new Board President Steve Wagener
has a good foundation to build on.
We welcomed new Community
Board Member Rachel Johnson, who
hit the ground running as Marketing
Committee Chair. We also thank
the Finance Committee for its
exemplary work in finding a new
auditor, Laura MacDonald LPA. The
firm did a great job and significantly
reduced our audit cost.

3RD ANNUAL SHARE-A-GLASS
February 23, 2013
2ND ANNUAL SHARE OUR
DREAMS May 11, 2013
Scenes Tour of 13abc. Some hungry
bidders won a dinner for 6 at a Toledo
Firehouse cooked by the firefighters,
and in their own home by Chef Reggie
Hall. One art fan commissioned
a portrait by Joseph Angelo. Two
footloose bidders won a New Rider
Course from Harley-Davidson and a
one-week condo stay in Florida.
Our third Share-A-Glass event was a
rousing success, raising over $4,200
toward operating expenses for our
annual agency Campaign. We were
able to raise a glass in thanks to
our workplace coordinators for all
the effort and time they put into
the Campaign, as well as generous
event sponsors UAW Local 14 and
Heidelberg Distributing. Over 200
guests enjoyed the evening, including
lovely piano music provided by
Matthew Chambers, a resident artist
with the Collingwood Arts Center.
The highlight of the event was the
presentation of the Robert Brundage
Award to Sue Carter, a long-time
Board member and past President of
the ACLU. In addition to her many
other activities, Sue was recognized for
her 20-year career at the University of
Toledo Medical Center dedicated to
serving people living with AIDS, HIV,
and cancer in northwest Ohio.
Community Shares partnered with
our newest sponsor, Toledo HarleyDavidson, to host our signature annual
fundraiser at their showroom on West
Central Avenue. Over 200 people
were in attendance at this year’s event
which featured an inaugural Celebrity
Auction and a night of fun celebrating
the talent our community has to offer.
Malena Caruso of 13abc stepped up
as our Volunteer Auctioneer, granting
the highest bidders the experience of
personally interacting with celebrities
from northwest Ohio. Sports fans
vied to coach the University of Toledo
Women’s Basketball Team, the Men’s
Football Team, eat dinner at Hollywood
Casino with University of Michigan
Football walk-on sensation Jordan
Kovacs, and hit the links in style with
PGA Golf Pro Jaysen Hansen at the
Belmont Country Club. Show business
fans got to DJ for a Day with the 92.5
Morning Rush and take a Behind-the-

Many people and organizations came
together to make this event a huge
success. Volunteer Tony Schmenk of
the Vincent Alan Creative Group made
our marketing stand out when he
designed a new event logo and printed
materials for the event. The Glass City
Rollers helped us skate to success
with our first $1,000 Cash Raffle and
Live Auction. Lynn Brand made the
space beautiful and Shannon Syzperski
photographed the results.¬ Everyone
rocked out to the music provided by
Bobby May, John Barile, Frankie May
and Danny Jahns.
Of course, none of this would have
been possible without the amazing
leadership of Dawn Christen and
her very hard-working Development
Committee. And our special thanks
also go out to major event sponsors
IBEW Local 8, Robbie Weinberg, and
Gallon, Takacs, Boissoneault & Schaffer!
WE ALL SHARE IN MAKING THE DIFFERENCE!
