Letter from the Board Chair
Dear Families, Staff and Friends,
Dear VCS Community,
You set a milestone for VCS last year by crossing the million-dollar
threshold with your gifts to the Annual Fund. Thank you for being
such a vibrant community of supporters! Your generosity enables
us to be the New York leader in K-8 education that we aspire to be.
Your leadership sets an example for our students in how to make a
significant difference, so that they grow up knowing that they, like
you, can make change happen in meaningful ways.
It is with deep gratitude that I write to thank you all for a recordbreaking fund raising year for VCS. Through the generosity of the
families in this community, we were able to raise nearly 1.1 million
dollars for our Annual Fund during the 2013-2014 school year.
We are grateful to each family who contributed, stretching family
budgets to help us reach our goal. Every contribution matters,
both large and small, and every gift given benefits our VCS
children directly. Library books, field trips, outside speakers and
consultants, athletic uniforms, tuition assistance, professional
development for teachers, technology for use in classrooms—
whatever is needed for the best practices in education, you have
provided it. I am deeply grateful!

The Annual Fund is a vital part of every independent school’s
budget. Your contributions have an enormous impact on the
quality and diversity of our program, our outstanding staff and
beautiful facility. As we enter into the implementation phase of
our Strategic Plan, your continued support will make possible the
realization of the brilliant, forward-thinking ideas that set the VCS
experience apart from any other.

make VCS the stimulating, energetic and nurturing community

We are proud to announce a milestone in the 2013-2014 Annual Fund. We set a
goal of $1,000,000 and exceeded it. We raised $1,069,554 with gifts from more
than 88% of our current parents, 64% of our staff and contributions from many
other community members including alumni, alumni parents and grandparents.

Generous leadership gifts, along with a strong school spirit, inspired others to contribute and we saw our
numbers rising over the course of the school year. We are thankful for each and every contribution.
We owe special thanks to the Annual Fund Giving Committees. Chair Scott Corrigan was inspirational in
his efforts, and the considerable talents of our Committee volunteers came together to bring forth these
remarkable results.
As unrestricted gifts, Annual Fund Giving benefits virtually every aspect of life at VCS. Curriculum expansion,
staff professional development, enriched activities, new technology, tuition assistance and facility maintenance
are some of the crucial elements and improvements that these gifts help to fund. These funds ensure Village
Community School’s continued excellence – an achievement that would not be possible without the generosity
of everyone who participated.

Benefit Auction
Parents and staff proved once again that having fun and having a positive
impact go hand in hand at VCS. Revelers at the Annual Benefit Auction &
Gala raised their paddles, spun the wheel and danced the night away to
the tune of $270,077 in support of our Annual Fund. We came together
as a community to contribute an additional $39,520 to our Fund-A-Need
Special Initiative, which enabled us to pilot an iPad Math Program for 8th
Grade students, purchase new math materials and provide professional
development training both offsite and online for all of our Lower School
Homeroom teachers and Upper School Math Teachers in our new
Singapore Math Program.

The Auction was an unforgettable night and a special opportunity for our
staff and parents to come together to celebrate our accomplishments,
support our children and look forward to achieving future goals together.
It was hard not to feel “on top of the world” with so much support and
positive energy in the room – not to mention the breathtaking panoramic
view from the venue, which certainly lived up to its name, 360°.

The new roof garden gave Lower School students a chance to get their hands dirty. They
planted, tended, and harvested vegetables from carrots to kale. Their bounty showed up on
our plates in the lunchroom—our own farm to table.
