On behalf of the over 700 members of the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, let me welcome
you to the Susquehanna Valley. You will find the Valley an enthusiastic mix of natives and transplants and will
soon realize you’ve found a new home. We are a four-county region united by the river, though each of our
communities has maintained its own unique identity and charm.
If you are a long-term resident, you already know the unmatched quality of life, rich heritage and opportunities
that abound in the region. You are familiar with our excellent healthcare, exceptional universities, tech schools,
public education and a strong push to add a community college. You appreciate the mid-Pennsylvania lifestyle,
yet know you are just a few hours drive from almost half of the country’s population.
The Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce has forged partnerships with key business, education
and government agencies to promote growth, create new opportunities for our members and the Valley, and to
celebrate the many qualities that make this region a great place to work and live. Geographically we serve
Snyder, Union, Northumberland and Montour counties, though one in seven of our members is based outside the
area, which brings true meaning to the concept of regionalism.
You will see Chamber members that possess an “uncommon dedication” to the region and a strong, thriving
Chamber. We are a membership organization and have created an organizational culture of retention and
recruitment. While the staff plays an important role and does terrific work, it is the collective efforts of the
Chamber Ambassadors, our loyal members and our Board in combination with the quality of programs,
economic development efforts, affinity programs and community involvement the Chamber delivers that our
members recognize as invaluable.
On the economic development side, SIDCO, the Susquehanna Industrial Development Corporation, has
completed and is actively marketing the Pawling Station Industrial Park and its 48 acres of prime industrially
zoned real estate in Selinsgrove. We welcome a new retail mall called Monroe Marketplace and also encourage
downtown visits with their unique shopping and restaurant opportunities. We continue to advocate strongly for
the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway and Penn Valley Airport, both of which are essential to the long-term
development of the Valley.
Our community development efforts continue to be strong. Municipal planning, Downtown Affiliates,
Leadership Susquehanna Valley, national-level recognition for our publications and a myriad of special events,
business and educational programs and networking opportunities demonstrate that this is an extremely vibrant
and active Chamber.

The Greater Susquehanna Valley is made up of four counties that together create a vibrant community
surrounded by culture, heritage and diversity. Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties each exhibit
rich histories that have been preserved for generations. These counties offer a variety of events and attractions for
tourists and residents alike to experience the timeless traditions and unique beauty of the Valley.
Montour County was established on May 3, 1850. This part of Columbia County was named in honor of Madame
Montour, a woman of Indian and French descent, who is best known for being an interpreter for Governor Robert
Hunter. Montour is the smallest of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, with a population of 17,817 as of 2006. It is the
rural heart of Pennsylvania, offering serene natural landscapes that are perfect for a relaxing retreat. It is also
home to Ricketts Glen, which has become one of several nearby state parks that are Registered National Natural
Landmarks. Ricketts Glen has over 22 waterfalls for its guests to enjoy. There are also almost 20,000 acres of
state game land in Montour Country that are widely used for hunting, fishing, boating, hiking and bird watching.
The main city in Montour County is Danville. It was founded in 1792 and became a borough on February 27,
1849. Each year, the Danville community celebrates its distinct history with the Iron Heritage Festival, an event
that is both entertaining and educational. Through a series of exhibits and interactive demonstrations, visitors
learn about the first T-rail, which was manufactured in 1845 at the Montour Iron Works in Danville. The T-rail
helped Pennsylvania Americans become leaders in the Industrial Revolution.

Northumberland County was established after the French and Indian War in 1772 from an 8,000 square-mile
piece of land. The county eventually increased to 15,000 square miles as rural areas prospered into small towns,
giving it a population of 91,003 as of 2007. With 29 other counties stemming from its borders, it is called the
“Mother of Counties.”
Along with its surrounding counties, Northumberland County is a substantial producer of anthracite. About onetenth of the entire anthracite region is represented by Coal, Mt. Carmel and Zerbe townships, as well as sections
of Cameron Township, which are all located within the county. This 50 square-mile area of anthracite production
is more commonly known as the “Shamokin District” or the “Coal Region.”
Sunbury, Northumberland’s county seat, is bordered by the Susquehanna River, making it rich with farmlands
and forests. Whether it is a walk around its banks in the state park, a leisurely ride in a boat or a long day of
fishing, the river offers endless entertainment.
Sunbury is the home of 9,944 residents (as of 2006), distinguishing it as the largest population center in
Northumberland County. It is most commonly known for harboring the first building to be wired for electricity.
In July of 1883, Thomas Edison wired the City Hotel using his three-wire system. The establishment was
renamed The Edison Hotel in his honor. The same day Edison wired the railroad station on Second Street, as
Sunbury had become an important railroad center at the time. The Edison Hotel still stands today and visitors can
enjoy lunch, dinner or a cocktail in its historic setting.

Snyder County, established in the 1740s, became an independent political unit on March 2, 1855. The county was
named after Governor Simon Snyder, who served three terms from 1808-1817. Snyder also served as Speaker of
the House, was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Snyder
County is filled with attractions, and is home to 38,113 residents (as of 2007). The area is famous for its
Pennsylvania German language and culture, agricultural heritage, wood products industry, the Beaver Furnace,
the Kearns Car and Rolling Green Park, as well as many fairs, festivals and auctions. Many historical landmarks
and structures can be found in Snyder County including the Governor Snyder Mansion, Pomfret’s Castle, and
ruins of the Pennsylvania Canal.
Selinsgrove, the main borough of Snyder County, had a population of 5,343 residents as of 2006. Founded in
1787, downtown Selinsgrove features quaint shops, restaurants and businesses with colonial and early American
architecture. The friendly and relaxed pace of Selinsgrove creates a charming atmosphere that is a truly only oneof-a-kind experience. Annual events in Selinsgrove include the Brew & Wine Festival, Market Street Festival,
Antiques on the Isle and its Summer Concert Series. It is also the home of Susquehanna University, which is
recognized as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the Northeast.

Union County was established on March 22, 1813, and its main borough, Lewisburg, was later named the county
seat. Many are attracted to Union County’s leisurely pace of living and its natural beauty. It has a magnificent
blend of mountainous ranges, fertile valleys and sparkling streams stemming from the Susquehanna River. Many
city workers live in Union County, as it is within an hour’s drive of Harrisburg, Scranton and Williamsport,
causing its population to grow to 43,724 as of 2007.
Lewisburg had a population of 5,578 as of 2006. The National Register of Historic Places honored Lewisburg’s
19th century downtown for its rich historic and architectural heritage. Visitors and residents of the town enjoy the
Packwood Museum, filled with art and antiques from around the world, as well as the Tuscan-style Slifer House
Museum. The Campus Theatre, one of America’s few remaining single-screen, Art Deco movie palaces, can also
be found here. Another great asset of Lewisburg is Bucknell University, which is one of the nation’s top liberal
arts institutions. Bucknell provides the city with the Sigmund and Claire Weis Center for the Performing Arts,
which is remarkable both in design and acoustics.
Mifflinburg, another major borough in Union County, offers a delightful environment with specialty shops,
museums, historic homes and a busy calendar of events. Mifflinburg is the residence of 3,568 people (as of
2006). It is well known for its Mifflinburg Buggy Days, an unparalleled event that entertains the community and
educates visitors about the economic foundation of Mifflinburg. The Buggy Museum in Mifflinburg is
fascinating and draws many visitors.

Located along the Susquehanna River, the Susquehanna Valley offers a lush, green landscape of beauty. The gem
of Central Pennsylvania, this region covers a multitude of communities and offers accessibility through its
network of roadways and railways.
The Susquehanna Valley is the transportation hub of the central U.S., with over 100,000 vehicles traveling the
area’s major interchanges each day. More than half of the buying power and over 40 percent of the U.S.
population are within 500 miles of the region.
Strategically located, the area is only a three-hour drive from Baltimore; New York City; Philadelphia and
Washington, D.C. The heart of the Susquehanna Valley is less than an hour from Harrisburg and Williamsport.
Major highways and interstates connect the Valley to the rest of the country and even Canada. Road travelers can
venture east and west via Interstate 80, and on Routes 35, 45, 192 and 522. Route 15 is the main north and south
thoroughfare, augmented by several connecting routes.
The Greater Susquehanna Valley is home to a regional airport, the Penn Valley Airport. This commercial airport
offers a 3,800 by 75-foot fully lighted runway that can accommodate almost all single- and twin-engine aircrafts.
The Harrisburg International Airport is within an hour’s drive, offering both national and international flights via
seven major airlines. Harrisburg International provides transportation to over 650,000 passengers yearly.
Major ports in both Baltimore and Philadelphia are only three hours away. Philadelphia offers an export incentive
to those companies needing to ship overseas.
SEDA-Council of Governments Joint Rail Authority, Canadian Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern separately
serve select parts of the Valley, but together, form an extensive rail system that fulfills the needs of the
immediate region and beyond.
Susquehanna Trailways motorcoach company transports travelers in the Susquehanna Valley by way of
educational cultural tours, private charters and daily scheduled routes.
The Union/Snyder Transportation Alliance provides free transportation, encompassing about 650 square miles, to
local human service agencies. The alliance also manages the Shared-Ride Program that offers transport to
individuals over the age of 65 for a reduced rate.
Major interstates, access roads, railroad lines and high-speed Internet cables crisscross the Susquehanna Valley,
offering companies the key infrastructure needed to run a successful business.
Tourism Annual events, attractions and museums showcase the culture, traditions and history of the Susquehanna
Valley. The presence of authentic covered bridges, mountains and the Susquehanna Valley River makes the
region picturesque.
The warmth of the spring means the start of many art and music festivals. The sizzling summer months bring
carnivals, county fairs, Buggy Days and the Iron Heritage Festival. The crisp air of fall is celebrated with
Oktoberfests, the Milton Harvest Festival and Halloween parades. Winter glitters with downtown decorations and
Late Shopper’s Night. Santa rides into town and holiday house tours put merriment on display, while the R.B.
Winter State Park Snowfest lights up the holiday season.
Exciting, entertaining and educational attractions draw in crowds. The Amateur Softball Association of
Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in Sunbury is a home run, showcasing the states’ notable history of amateur softball.
Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg features exhilarating rides, challenging miniature golf and games
galore. It offers free admission and parking, making it a great destination for the entire family.
The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, located in Ashland, offers a sneak peak into the dark caverns and close quarters
of the mining profession. Clyde Peeling’s Reptileland exhibits fascinating, out of the ordinary creatures. This
distinctive zoo is home to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, lizards and other reptilian and amphibious animals. Hop on
the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat for a cruise, day or night, out on the pristine waters of the Valley and be
sure not to miss out on its concert or karaoke cruises for added musical amusement.
The Williamsport Crosscutters minor league baseball team wows crowds every season with heart racing plays
and special events to make for a dynamic night out at the ballpark. Little league history is rooted deep in
Williamsport as it was the birthplace of organized little league play—the Little League World Series takes place
here every year. Do not miss out on the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum in South Williamsport.
A look into the extensive past of the Valley leads to a discovery of the ancestors that shaped the region. The Dale/
Engle Walker House, constructed of Limestone in 1793, offers visitors a riveting trip into history on the
Underground Railroad, among other subjects. The Packwood House Museum dates back as far as the 1790s and
served several purposes in its time, ultimately becoming a showplace for the 18th to 20th Century arts, crafts and
furniture of Edith Kelly Fetherston.
The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum’s restored factory illustrates the production of 19th century buggies. Slifer
House Museum is a flash back to the Victorian Era—once the home of Pennsylvania politician Eli Slifer, the
museum is now a source of great entertainment with events all year round. The Joseph Priestly House Museum
was the home of the innovative Joseph Priestly who is said to have made the groundbreaking discovery of
oxygen.
Lodging Comfortable, fully equipped accommodations in the Susquehanna Valley make any stay a true pleasure.
Over 20 hotels and motels offer an abundance of amenities at any price point. Most are furnished with Internet
access for business people on the go or those who want to plan the next day’s activities with the help of the
World Wide Web. A number have restaurants on the premises and include complimentary breakfasts for their
guests. Meeting and/or conference rooms, pools, fitness rooms and game rooms are some of the other perks
offered.
Bed and breakfasts are plentiful in the Valley, perfectly complementing the charm of the area. Many of these
quaint inns offer full breakfasts, private baths, Internet access and relaxing hot tubs and whirlpools. Over 20
cottages, farms and houses offer a unique spin on lodging. Visitors can also stay at a number of campgrounds in
the area.
Dining The Susquehanna Valley has a unique menu stemming from the area’s roots and tradition of delectable
Pennsylvania Dutch home cooking. Influences from diverse cultures, as well as all-American flavors are
sprinkled throughout. These together make for a delightful spread that can quench any thirst or curb any hunger.
BJ’s Steak and Rib House, Irene’s, Tedd’s Landing and Hoss’s Steak and Sea House bring both land and sea to
the table. The authentic Mexican dishes at Casa Sanchez make taste buds tingle. Its refreshing homemade
margaritas harmonize flawlessly with any meal. Country Cupboard dishes out the best in homecooking—
Steaming potpies, country-style ham, moist broasted chicken and freshly baked desserts and breads satisfy the
famished.
Campus Candlelight Café and Townside Garden Café provide a casual, relaxed atmosphere to
enjoy a delightful lunch or dinner. There is room at the Meiserville Inn and Pine Barn Inn and Restaurant for
weary travelers. Carriage Corner Restaurant and Nanny Tutu's please the palate. Red Robin’s menu of diverse
burger selections is endless. Try an all-natural route with Emma’s Food for Life.
From steaks, ribs and seafood at fine dining establishments to barbeque and burgers at more casual eateries, all
options equal satisfaction. A nice glass of wine from any one of the local wineries complements a meal perfectly.
End your feast with a slice of pie or cake from The Country Cupboard’s endless homemade dessert selection.
Shopping The landscape of the Valley is scattered with both quaint shops and large chain stores offering plentiful
choices for gifts, everyday necessities and more. The downtown area is filled with charming bookstores,
boutiques, antique and art stores, offering shoppers hidden treasures and delights.
Fine quality furniture stores can be found throughout the Valley and surrounding area. Garden centers,
candlecrafters, home décor, candy shops and craft stores are just a few of the other shopping venues in
the vicinity. Wine and other products from local wineries make for distinctive gifts and souvenirs.
The malls and marketplaces in the area provide a surplus of stores for one-stop shopping. The Susquehanna
Valley Mall is the largest mall in Central Pennsylvania with anchor stores including The Bon Ton, Boscovs,
JCPenney and Sears. Cinema Center Theaters offer hours of enjoyment. The Monroe Marketplace, an extensive
open-air mall, opened in October 2008 with stores like Target, Kohl’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, among others.
Populated with trees, and floral accents, the quiet, safe and friendly neighborhoods of the Susquehanna Valley
have much to offer. Current residents are fortunate to have access to excellent healthcare, beautiful parks,
superior higher education, annual festivities, rich culture, convenient shopping and delicious dining right at their
fingertips.
For residents not wanting to buy just yet, many rental options exist. There are plenty of apartments to lease,
charging affordable monthly rent that can average anywhere from about $375 to $650. Looking for something a
bit larger? Condo rentals run the gamut from costing $650 to about $1,200 per month. Homes in the area are
available to rent for approximately $700 to $1,000 monthly. Townhome rentals can range from roughly $725 to
$1,100 a month.
Looking to buy? Home prices cover a wide scope of styles. New developments offer move-in ready residences
with attractive modern features. A number of new construction neighborhoods are going up in the Valley.
Currently, existing homes are in higher demand in the area. Buyers are able to add their own individuality and
flair to these homes by decorating or remodeling them to fit specific tastes. Older homes also exude charm and
tradition.
House hunters have a wealth of options when it comes to price. Homes can range from over $1million for
custom, lavish homes to less than $100,000; however, the average price varies by county. The average selling
price for a home in Northumberland County is about $91,000. Snyder County prices average close to $142,000.
Montour County reaches about $156,000 while Union County comes in at about $186,000. Throughout the
Valley, condo purchase prices average around $153,000 and townhouses average in at $117,000.
The housing market remains steady in Central Pennsylvania and interest rates for mortgages are currently quite
appealing, varying anywhere from 6.3 percent to 6.8 percent.
The lumber industry is a major presence in the Valley. Modular homebuilders have taken advantage of this and,
in turn, have created a prospering manufacturing business. Despite the fact that these manufacturers are located in
the Valley, many of the homes they construct do not end up in this area. Instead, they are shipped off all over the
country to be grounded elsewhere.
The lumber industry is one of the largest employers in Snyder County with companies such as Wood-Mode Inc.,
Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. and Bingaman & Son Lumber Inc., as well as modular homemaker Apex
Homes Inc.
The beauty of the Susquehanna Valley is showcased through rolling hills, lush forests, the rippling Susquehanna
River, magnificent mountains and rushing streams and creeks. All of these geographical wonders are easy to
enjoy with state parks, forests, nature preserves and other destinations that allow visitors to enjoy the outdoor
splendor.
Sand Bridge State Park in Union County lies only about 15 miles west of Lewisburg. A great fishing hole at the
park is Rapid Run, stocked each year with brown and brook trout. Nestled along the Seven Notch Mountain,
three picnic pavilions provide a marvelous spot to enjoy an al fresco lunch. Other picnic tables and grills are
available for outdoor dining.
R.B. Winter State Park is situated within the Bald Eagle State Forest and covers an extensive 695 acres of land
enveloped in oak and pine trees, accented by Halfway Lake, encircled by rocky formations, carpeted with wild
flowers and plants and wildlife. Rapid Run flows through the park accompanied by a nature trail and verna pools
that come and go over the course of the year. Geologic formations, rock fields, butterfly and bird gardens are a
must see. The Little Bubbler in Halfway Lake is a small boiling artesian spring and is a geological mystery.
Several overlooks in the park offer incredible views. The Halfway Run Environmental Learning center and
Sheary-Linn Amphitheater provides visitors a truly educational experience. R.B. Winter State Park is located in
Union County less than 20 miles from Lewisburg.
Milton State Park is a picturesque island situated in the Susquehanna River. The northern half of this 82-acre land
mass has recreation fields, hiking trails, fishing, boating and opportunities for picnicking. The southern half is
mainly wooded and is a popular spot for hiking and launching small boats.
Shikellamy State Park is divided into two sectors, one being the 54-acre Shikellamy Marina section and the other
the 78-acre Shikellamy Overlook section. Hiking and biking trails give a unique tour of the park’s bountiful
foliage. The Shikellamy Overlook nature trail is home to wildlife and presents two overlooks towering 360 feet
above the Susquehanna River. Picnic areas are located all over the park. The world’s largest inflatable dam
creates the over 3,000-acre Lake Augusta, creating a perfect spot for skiing, boating and fishing. The lake is
populated with a variety of fish.
Hike or picnic at Snyder-Middleswarth or Tall Timbers Natural Areas. Drop a line into Walker Lake while
floating along in a boat. While the Susquehanna River is primarily a quiet body of water, the rocks at McKees
Half Falls produce exciting rapids. The rest stop and picnic spots at the falls are a great rest from a long car ride.
The Middlecreek Area Community Center offers athletic and informational programs for all age groups from Tae
Kwon Do to computer classes. The fitness center and aerobic room are equipped for intense exercise. The
climbing wall reaches new heights of challenge. Plenty of sports can be played in the 10,000 square-foot
gymnasium. A game room and racquetball courts conjure up competition.
The Danville Area Community Center offers a broad lineup of classes and other activities. Swimming lessons,
summer camps, yoga and Pilates classes, personal training and indoor cycling all are available, presenting a
diverse assortment of options.
The Lewisburg Recreation Authority is a great resource to get involved with team sports and other athletics and
programs. The authority’s facilities include several parks, pools and an ice rink.
The Susquehanna Valley Country Club boasts an 18-hole course with top-notch amenities and plenty of space to
relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. A dip in the pool can be refreshing after a long day on the green.
Brimming with a vibrant art scene and various forms of entertainment, the Valley is a true treasure to be
discovered. Melodies emerge from parks, museums, festivals and performing arts centers, presenting concerts all
year long. Dramatic and comedic productions from the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble can be seen all over
Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art features a gallery displaying the works of its namesake. Nestled on
over 500 acres, the landscape surrounding the center lends itself to artistic beauty like the kind that inspired
Smith in all of his ventures as a writer, naturalist and artist.
Take a trip down Route 45. Along this highway travelers can find about 50 artists displaying their talents in a
host of galleries, studios and museums. From contemporary to traditional and watercolors to ceramics, there is
much to admire.
Penns Creek Pottery has been a part of the Valley for 30 years. Taking up residence in Sampsel’s Mill, which
was built in 1818, Penns Creek Pottery brings a new purpose to this important landmark. Bill Lynch and his
group of assistants create beautiful handcrafted porcelain and stoneware pieces. These works are designed to be
very durable and can withstand normal everyday use.
Find refreshment at one of the several wineries in the Valley. Hunters Valley Winery in Liverpool provides a
warm and welcoming atmosphere atop an overlook where patrons can enjoy the day accompanied by a bottle of
vino. Part of the Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail, Shade Mountain Winery has three wine store locations, one
of which lies in Middleburg where its vineyards are located. Using grapes grown in its own vineyards and locally
grown fruit, the winery produces more than 30 different wines. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic
lunch and enjoy a taste of Shade Mountain’s flavors, while overlooking the vineyards.
Also part of the trail, the Spyglass Ridge Winery in Sunbury produces many flavorful wines and plays host to
endless guests with various special events and weddings next to its gleaming lake. Three additional wineries exist
on the Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail: Benigna's Creek Winery, Brookmere Winery and Mount Nittany
Vineyard and Winery.
Education in the Greater Susquehanna Valley is at its best. With the highly recognized Bucknell and
Susquehanna universities within its borders, the Valley offers opportunities in education not found anywhere
else. Elementary and secondary education institutions in the Valley offer top-notch facilities with first-class
curriculum, extra curricular activities, athletics and clubs to provide a well-rounded educational experience.
The Danville Area School district operates four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school,
while serving the Danville and Riverside communities.
Lewisburg Area School District is made up of an elementary, intermediate, middle and high school. The district
serves Lewisburg, West Milton and Winfield.
Midd-West School District’s three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school serve the areas of
Middleburg, Mt. Pleasant Mills, Kreamer, Beavertown, Penns Creek and Beaver Springs.
Selinsgrove Area School District is comprised of an elementary, intermediate, middle and high school and serves
Selinsgrove, Hummels Wharf, Shamokin Dam, Port Trevorton and Freeburg.
Line Mountain School District includes three elementary schools and a junior-senior high school and serves the
Line Mountain, Dalmatia, Trevorton and Herndon areas.
Mifflinburg Area School District’s four elementary schools, one intermediate, one middle and one high school
serve the communities of Mifflinburg and Vicksburg.
Shikellamy School District is made up of four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The
district serves Northumberland, Snydertown and Sunbury.
Sunbury Christian Academy, Meadowbrook Christian, Northumberland Christian School, Greenwood Friends
School and St. Cyril Academy all provide a private school education infused with religious values.
Technical and Vocational Training Institutions SUN Area Career and Technology Center, located in New Berlin,
offers advanced placement classes for high school students, adult education opportunities, technical career
training and vocational education.
Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School provides an education in a multitude of fields. For high
school students, the education they receive is an augmentation of what they are already receiving at one of the
area’s participating schools. Adults wishing to continue their education can freshen up their skills or learn a new
trade.
McCann School of Business and Technology has been educating students in the region for many years.
Associate’s degrees are available in areas such as accounting, early childhood education, computer science and
programming, medical assisting, among others. Diploma programs are also offered in a number of other fields.
Its location in Sunbury is one of four.
Founded in 1944, Triangle Tech has grown to cover multiple locations in Pennsylvania. At the facility in
Sunbury, students can earn a Triangle Tech AST Degree in carpentry and construction technology, maintenance
electricity and construction technology, and welding and fabrication technology. A Triangle Tech Diploma in
residential and light commercial electricity is also an option.
Higher Education Bucknell University, located in Lewisburg, is one of the top liberal arts institutions in the
country. Founded in 1846, the university’s long history has been influenced by the dedicated students, faculty
and staff. Bucknell is a highly selective university offering over 50 majors and more than 60 minors. Beyond this
wide range of options, a host of special academic programs afford students remarkable learning opportunities
including study abroad programs in a diverse mix of countries. To complete and enhance the learning experience,
many extra curricular activities keep university life exciting and fulfilling. Sports are competitive in this Division
I school.
Susquehanna University enrolls about 2,000 students annually. Founded in 1858 the architecture on campus is in
the Georgian style and covers about 220 acres. This liberal arts institution boasts small class sizes and its faculty
is primarily made up of instructors who have earned either a doctorate or terminal degree. The three schools of
Susquehanna University include: The Sigmund Weiss School of Business; the School of Arts, Humanities and
Communications; and the School of Natural and Social Sciences. Professional programs include veterinary
medicine, dentistry, teaching, law, medicine and ministry. High-tech amenities and a wealth of student
organizations and athletics make for a well-rounded education.
The Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and other entities in the community are dedicated to
promoting and educating the businesses of the area by giving them the tools to succeed.
The Small Business Development Center at Bucknell University provides endless resources for owners of small
businesses to navigate through the challenging world of commerce. Seminars and training events encompass
subjects such as growing small businesses, human resources, marketing and promotional ventures, and writing a
business plan. Consulting services teach business owners how to plan, manage and improve financial skills. The
development center also offers aid in such areas as product development and design, marketability and more.
The Susquehanna Economic Development Association Council of Governments (SEDA-COG) has a history that
dates back to 1957. SEDA-COG is a development agency that works with a public policy board to provide
expertise, leadership and services to the businesses, communities, residents and institutions of 11 counties.
SEDA-COG works to encourage and institute controlled and environmentally friendly growth. It provides
specific services to particular facets of a community. Businesses can benefit from assistance with exporting and
financing, while communities can utilize SEDA-COG’s resources for downtown revitalization, housing and more.
IMC offers support to Central Pennsylvania companies by helping them learn about and tackle their business
environment. Through marketing and sales strategies, performance enhancement, information technology,
product development and other services, IMC works to enhance a company’s growth.
By addressing potential problems, pointing out strengths, providing tools and resources, IMC devises strategies
for each individual business to push toward success. Since its founding in 1988, over 500 companies have taken
advantage of IMC’s services.
The efforts of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) help to
revitalize, maintain and encourage growth throughout the state’s communities and businesses, including the
Susquehanna Valley region. The department works to help bring local companies into global commerce. The
Susquehanna Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO) and Sunbury New Enterprises Expansion Drive, Inc.
(SNEED) work together to help businesses recieve funding and find property.
Ben Franklin Technology Partners helps to equip businesses with technology, employees, financial support and
other necessities to build a successful company. The Manufacturers’ Association of Central Pennsylvania works
with businesses to master managing employees, conduct relevant roundtable discussions, assistance with gaining
funding and much more. FOCUS Central Pennsylvania provides a multitude of information and resources to
companies wishing to locate to the region.
With the Susquehanna Valley’s abundant lumber supply, it is no surprise that the wood products industry
dominates the region. The industry employs over 11,000 people in central Pennsylvania, with large employers
like Wood-Mode Inc., Conestoga Wood Specialties, Bingaman & Sons Lumber and Carriage Manor Builders.
The convenient location and infamous quality of the area’s healthcare centers makes healthcare a lead industry
for the area. The region is home to world-class hospitals, outpatient centers and senior living facilities, all within
a short drive.
The Valley’s landscape and climate lends itself to a great environment for agriculture. Both food processing and
agriculture are key industries for Central Pennsylvania. Big names like Weis Markets Inc., Giant Food Stores
LLC and Butter Krust Baking Co./Sara Lee Corp. are major players in the agriculture and food processing market.
The life sciences, high technology and advanced manufacturing industries continue to grow as the area’s
centralized location offers a highly competitive advantage. The area’s plentiful resources and skilled and
dedicated labor force puts the Susquehanna Valley in a class of its own.
The Susquehanna Valley is home to numerous industrial parks. Each of the four counties has at least one. The
latest one to be unveiled is Pawling Station Business Park, located along Route 522 in Selinsgrove. The park is
owned by the Susquehanna Industrial Development Corp. (SIDCO), the economic development arm of the
Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The Susquehanna Valley is home to over 524,000 people with more than 345,000 residents of working age living
within a 30-mile radius. With a long history in manufacturing and agribusiness, the area’s work force
demonstrates superior work ethic, company loyalty and trainability.
Healthcare is a key component of any community and the Susquehanna Valley is no exception. The Valley is
fortunate to have excellent healthcare facilities in such close proximity to its residents.
Named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country, Geisinger Medical Center is a 430-bed hospital equipped with
the best in technology to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate. Top-notch physicians practice in more than 75
specialties. These medical professionals also have outpatient offices on campus for those patients who do not
require hospital services.
The Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger Medical Center is the only one of its kind in the region and
provides exceptional care to the Valley’s youngest patients. The Women’s Pavilion offers the only fertility center
in the region while offering abundant services focused on female health. It is also staffed to handle high-risk
pregnancies. A level I trauma center ensures immediate care for emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Geisinger Heart Institute brings outstanding cardiac care to its patients with advanced equipment and
procedures, and has been setting standards in coronary artery bypass surgery. The Geisinger Neurosciences
Institute has been making strides with stroke care. Other Geisinger facilities in Danville include the Geisinger
Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Center, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, House of Care and Knapper
Clinic.
Evangelical Community Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital serving the Valley for more than 80 years. Its new
emergency department features two trauma rooms, 19 private patient rooms, a hazmat/decontamination area and
much more. Patients who require less extensive surgical and medical procedures may be eligible for one-day
surgery. The 9,500 square-foot Donehower Center has been making advances in oncology treatment that help to
eradicate tumors and provide patients a better chance for remission.
The Joint Replacement Center at Evangelical Community Hospital has a fresh approach to joint replacement
surgery and rehabilitation. Small groups of patients share in this experience together and form a support system
to make the recovery process easier.
The Thyra M. Humphreys Center for Breast Health provides a wide range of services and is staffed by breast
surgeons, certified mammographers, a nurse practitioner, a breast health nurse specialist, pathologists,
radiologists and other support staff. The Family Place is a maternity department dedicated to the specialized care
of mothers and their newborns. Comfortable accommodations and experienced staff create the formula for a
pleasant pregnancy and birth. Evangelical Community Hospital’s other services include comprehensive
laboratory testing, physical rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary care, a sleep disorder center, hospice, outpatient
clinics, pediatrics and more.
Sunbury Community Hospital and Outpatient Center is a 121-bed acute care hospital that has been serving the
Valley for more than 110 years. Emergency care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, respiratory, orthopedic and
surgical services are available. The high-quality level of care shows through the dedicated professionals of
Sunbury Community Hospital. The Selinsgrove Health Center, affiliated with the hospital, offers easy access to
family medicine, laboratory services and other specialties.
Additional medical professionals in the Valley include chiropractors, dentists, periodontists, orthodontists,
general physicians, eye care specialists, physical therapists, neurologists, orthopedic physicians, surgeons and
others.
Providing a safe and secure environment where residents feel at ease in their neighborhoods is essential. Elected
officials and other factions of the government work to provide this type of situation for the public they serve.
Each county in the Valley, and the communities within, maintain their own governments. Each operates fire and
police departments and emergency services, as well as other departments and committees to preserve and
encourage safety and prosperity.

organizations operate local branches of their operations in the four counties. The American Cancer Society,
American Heart Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way,
Northumberland County American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House of Danville Inc., The Salvation Army–
Sunbury, Snyder County American Red Cross, Union County American Red Cross and Union County United
Way all participate in attending to the welfare of the public.
A number of local entities also fight for the common good. The Susquehanna Valley House of Hope caters to the
problems teenagers face in today’s world. Clinical Outcomes Group, Inc. provides youth programs, abuse
intervention, drug and alcohol counseling, community and workplace wellness programs, among other services.
The Union-Snyder Community Action Agency assists people in poverty situations find shelter, food and other
necessities. Keystone Human Services shares their goal to nurture people and help them to become active
members of society, no matter their situation.

The Voice of the Valley monthly newsletter is distributed to over 73,000 readers via The Daily Item and The

Another monthly advertising opportunity lies in the Business Connect Direct Mailing. The Chamber directly
mails informational packets to over 850 businesses announcing upcoming events. Chamber members have the
