Siloam Mission Summer 2015
Changing lives for over 25 years
Annual Breakfast
Setting this year’s Siloam Mission Annual
Breakfast in the Canadian Museum for
Human Rights brought into sharp focus
why we do what we do – compassion
and community. Emceed by 103 Virgin’s
Pamela Roz, 300+ people enjoyed
the banquet sponsored by Manitoba
Pork while learning the many ways we
your contributions provide dignity and
opportunity beyond providing meals.
Siloam Board member, Dr. David Neale
opened with grace while harpist, Sheila
Grystsky, provided music. Presentations
by Directors Mike Beauregard and
Judy Richichi brought client stories to
life and illustrated both milestones and
challenges. Thanks to all. Learn more

Marathoner Ed Toews recently completed
his 6th run in his 20 marathons in
15 Months challenge. The Manitoba
Marathon means a lot. “I look forward to
every marathon, but this one is special. It
is my home marathon ... they appreciate
my goal to raise money for such a worthy
organization.” To date, Ed has raised an
inspiring $6078.81 for Siloam. Read his
blog at www.runedrun.com and watch

Pushing the Limits
If you see strongman and Siloam volunteer,
Rob Kmet, pushing his car, don’t worry –
he’s training for a Guinness World Record in
support of Siloam Mission. Rob’s Push For
Change 2015 takes place at Gimli Raceway,
July 31. To date, Rob has raised $3,860
and a donor has offered to match for up
to $12,500! Visit www.facebook.com/

Shop4Siloam
The number of meals we serve is up
8% this year so it’s a constant challenge
meeting this demand. Thanks to Sobeys–
Sage Creek, Realty Executives First
Choice, and CHVN, and our team of
dedicated volunteers for making the June
Shop4Siloam so successful. Special
inspiration came when young Nathaniel
Huebert donated his savings to “bring
hope to others.” Shop4Siloam raised
1384lbs of food, 40lbs. of personal
hygiene items, and $362.
Thank you, Winnipeg!
Sidekick Road Trip
Our ‘Sidekick Program’ matches clients with compatible volunteers.
The first pair, Lorna and Pat, have now been joined by six more
partnerships. Recently this duo embarked on an epic journey to Lorna’s
home community to visit Sagkeeng’s Turtle Lodge. For both, this
profound experience included “…. Grandmothers and Elders speaking
and teaching, healing ceremonies with a special focus on families, and
young women and men participating in rites of passage which we all
celebrated.” These two show us the value of building community.
Seeing the BIGGER Picture
Spending time in the Drop In gives staff member,
Frank Klassen an opportunity to get to know our
guests. “Guests volunteer alongside us with joy
because they receive and want to give back.” It
also gave Frank a personal glimpse of how we can
best help. Many desperately need new underwear,
especially at this time of year. Others need steeltoed boots to be eligible for construction work.

Volunteer Appreciation
Siloam is able to do what it does because of our amazing 8000+ volunteers. We
celebrate their tremendous contribution with our annual Volunteer Appreciation
event. In May, 700 guests enjoyed a fun evening and delicious meal sponsored by
Danny’s Whole Hog. Their 80,000+ volunteer hours equate to more than 60 staff
positions, allowing us to offer many programs and services while being careful
stewards. Thanks you, volunteers!!

Message from the Executive Director
I love driving through rural Manitoba in
the summer, enjoying farmers’ fields
in full bloom and wide-open prairie
horizons. This expansiveness, and the
promised harvest, speak to God’s might
and generosity. These crops will feed us.
They are the backbone of our society.
These are the labours of some the
province’s most hardworking people.
When it comes to ending homelessness
and poverty in Manitoba, we can learn
from our farmers.
They are never guaranteed a good crop
at the end of the year. They must spend
huge amounts of upfront capital, human
resources and time readying fields,
seeding, growing and harvesting. They
must guard against pests, constantly
monitor soil nutrients, and try protect
against damage from our fickle climate.
Year after year, our farmers persevere,
passionate for the harvest and the
bounty it brings to the community.
So how does this inform the issue of
homelessness?
We know what a good harvest looks
like – people housed and moving toward
self-sustainable lifestyles that improve
their life and contribute to our economy.
We need to undertake the risk and invest
significant resources upfront to plant the
seeds and grow the crop.
Just like farmers plant different crops
in different fields, we need to invest in
multiple solutions at the same time. We
need transitional housing with supports
for those ready to move forward with
a helping hand. We need permanent
housing with supports for those
chronically homeless and not ready
to live on their own due of underlying
addiction of mental health issues.
We need to invest in making sure our
children aging out of foster care are
prepared for whatever life throws their
way rather than just graduating them to
the streets when they turn 18.
Summertime also drives home the
harsh realities for those who cope with
homelessness day in and day out.
Farmers know that summer weather
has its own risks for any crop. It takes
constant diligence to make sure the crop
is safe and can continue to grow.
Just because the chill of winter is gone
we cannot assume that, at least for this
brief season, somehow life is easier.
Many of our guests will tell you in some
ways it’s tougher. It’s impossible to
escape the heat blasting up from the
sidewalks. City buildings magnify the
humidity. Pummeled by the relentless
Camping at St Malo
Fifty field-trippers joined our Transition Services for an overnight
excursion to St. Malo. Clients, Madison residents, volunteers,
and staff enjoyed s’mores, volleyball, canoeing, archery, and
board games. One participant told us “We worked, played, and
relaxed as one group, building relationships one human being
to another.” Learn more about Transition services:

sun, it’s easy to overheat and severely
dehydrate. Rain may temporarily relieve
the air but it soaks through precious
footwear. Combined with sweat and the
stress of constantly walking, standing
and poor access to hygiene, health
issues get worse. Biting insects take
their toll.
Summer is no more a vacation for those
experiencing homelessness than it is
for farmers. The need is still great. The
work still goes on. And the harvest still
depends on it. We see the seeds of
compassion growing and together we
can ensure a better harvest.
Our province was built by hard-working
farmers. Let’s honour their legacy by
making it a great place to live and work
for all.
