2014 - American Foundation of Counseling Services
2014
American Foundation of Counseling Services (AFCS) promotes healing and hope by offering options
for healthier lives, as well as partnering to bring education, consultation and relationship building services to the community. AFCS is addressing issues at their core by working to provide services to all.
According to 2014 client
outcome data, therapy
practices at AFCS produce outcomes that exceed national levels.
T
Two staff have been
trained on Trauma
Informed Care and are
working to transition AFCS
to a Trauma Informed
Care agency.
T
To better engage
clients who suffer with
severely dysfunctional
behaviors, AFCS remains
dedicated to offering
evidence-based, preventative, intense therapy
services known as DBT.
The program continues to
see remarkable results;
most notably, the 100%
reduction in inpatient hospitalizations for clients who
participated in 2014.
T
The CORE Program
successfully hired two
child therapists who are
now working to establish a
school based mental
health program.
Part of AFCS’s vision is to integrate services for
the health of all people. The majority of AFCS’s
funding goes to providing services and increasing availability for those who may not otherwise
have access to them.
“

Foster Care Services
In 2014, to address the growing need for foster homes, AFCS expanded its licensing area
to include 10 surrounding counties.
AFCS’s Foster Care program trained and
licensed for 17 homes in 2014, providing a
safe, stable home to
children while they
were in AFCS’s care.

of clients surveyed reported
they would return to AFCS if
they needed further treatment.
Over 5,100 foster homes across the
state care for almost 8,000 foster
children each year. There is an ongoing need for foster parents.
“
AFCS clients are
A getting
better, faster.
According to the 2011 Brown County LIFE Study,
access barriers to quality mental health services
contribute to various other community issues.

Changing lives. Changing futures.
CHANGING THE COMMUNITY.
To better fulfill a mission of service to the community, AFCS collaborates. In 2014, the following partnerships made an impact on the
community:
AGING
OUT
Ryan Good, Director
of Foster Care, and
Bob Johnson, AFCS
Executive Director,
accept a grant from
Green Bay Packers
President, Mark Murphy, for Camp KARE,
AFCS’s Foster Care
Summer program.
Camp KARE helps
kids build financial,
employment, housing and education skills to prepare them for life
once they age out of foster care.
TRANSITIONAL SERVICES—partnership with fos-
ter care service providers and key stakeholders to prepare and equip foster youth with a support system and
resources to obtain life skills, education, employment
training, and basic needs assistance that are critical
toward achieving independence and self-sufficiency.
CORE PROGRAM (Child Outpatient Resource Expansion)—
partnership with healthcare providers, school districts
and school social workers to provide and coordinate
services, and offer early identification and treatment
options, specifically for school age children.
AFCS Celebrates 50 years of
service with a kick off
celebration early in 2014. Rob
Davis of the Green Bay Packers
spoke on his role in raising
awareness of mental health
and fighting the stigma.
UNITED WAY TASK FORCE ON THE PREVENTION OF CHILD
ABUSE AND NEGLECT—partnership between Brown County Human Services and mental health service providers
to immediately offer services to families and children,
minimizing barriers that tend to prolong dangerous situations for at-risk children.
The
MORE PROGRAM (Mental health Outreach Resource
Expansion)—partnership with area homeless shelters to
provide on-site mental health, substance abuse and
medication management services, removing financial
and transportation barriers.

Untreated mental illness is widely implicated as a
cause of numerous other challenges. low-income
or uninsured individuals have little or no access to
mental health care.
