This season's Children's Club confirmed the eco trend is big
business for kidswear, with the buzzwords organic, vintage and
eco-conscious on everyone's lips. WGSN reports.

This season, awareness of environmental issues was at an all-time
high, with a number of companies exploring ways of contributing to the
on-growing eco-movement. This included going partially or entirely
organic, or by using vintage and recycled fabrics, which gave many
collections a one-of-a-kind quality.
Trend-wise, nature and childhood-inspired graphics and all-over
patterns are popular for both genders. Birds, flowers, stripes and polka
dots are consistently used on apparel, footwear and accessories. Simple
silhouettes are complimented by exciting material combinations,
different appliqué methods and great attention to detail.

Many brands debuted at the show this year, including Ragamuffin Play
Clothes and Rhys Baby. Brands Heart to Heart and Positively
Organic showcased their first spring/summer collections, and Australian
label Bindi Wear International launched itself into the US market.
Footwear is proving a growing area of the kidswear market. Levi's, True
Religion and Stuart Weitzman presented very exciting new lines,
supporting the on-going trends of vulcanized footwear, ballerina flats,
jellies, flip-flops and sling back sandals.

Following the success of its Fauna pillows line, New York-based
Areaware is launching the Pico pillows collection. The pillows are
smaller, entirely made out of organic fabric, filled with natural cotton
and silk-screened.
Staying true to its signature animal graphic story, Areaware are taking
graphics from the original pillows as well as creating new artwork.
Horse motifs and graphics are key for spring/summer 2008.
The studio also presented baby tees and onesies, which share graphics
with the pillow collection.
The entire apparel line is made of organic cotton.

This vintage daywear brand originates from Dallas, Texas. The
designer, a mother of two girls, wanted to create clothes for her
children that were 'cosy and hip'.
Her passion for vintage fabrics and patterns is evident in the use of
one-off fabrics obtained from various flea markets and websites across
the US.
While the shapes are consistent, the variety of fabric patterns make for
a really fun, diverse and exciting collection.
Every article of the collection is unique - the patterns vary depending
on the availability of the certain fabric.
Baby Bean is currently sold at high-end specialty boutiques.

Bindi Wear, dedicated to Bindi Irwin - the eight-year-old daughter of
late crocodile hunter Steve Irwin - is finally launching on the US market
after successfully retailing for eight years in Australia.
The collection includes apparel and swimwear, footwear, headwear and
accessories for boys and girls up to ten years.
Having such a brave and exciting inspiration as Bindi, the creators of
the brand are striving to educate children on conservation and
protection of wildlife. The entire collection promotes awareness by
using slogan graphics.
Bindi Irwin donates 100% of her profits to the Australia Zoo's
conservation program.
Next season, Bindi Wear plans to introduce a smaller organic collection
alongside its main line.

C&C California, a beach and surf lifestyle-inspired brand, was created in
Southern California to deliver product reminiscent of 70s California
chic.
The spring/summer 2008 collection focuses on very basic colours and
silhouettes - tees, jerseys and dresses that are very easy to wear, and
can be layered to create a unique style.
Vintage-inspired graphics and all-over prints also appear.

Ferd is a refined collection for boys aged three months to six years.
Based in New York, the line is a creative reflection of the key trends
present in the menswear market.
Clean silhouettes and simple lines are complimented by fun, yet

Vancouver-based Fig is entering its third season on the market, with an
almost entirely organic collection.
Organic cotton and low-impact dyes are used where possible to lessen
the impact on the environment, however the demand for bright pieces
mean conventional dyes are also used.
Fig mixes cotton with lycra to ensure that clothes last longer and retain
their shape.
The brand derives inspiration for its graphics from nature, music and
everyday items. The 'Rock, paper, scissors' graphic is inspired by the
popular game, while 'Rock you like a hurricane' has a more political
message. Stripes also appear throughout.

Heart to Heart is a collection of affordable girls-only clothing targeting
the 7-14 year-olds.
The line consists of tops, jerseys, shirts, pants, overalls, dresses and
skirts. Easy-to-wear colours are complimented by exciting and fun
patterns and graphics. Reds, yellows and greys are among the most
sought after colours.
Patterns include all-over flowers and hearts, as well as stripes and
paisley-inspired motives.

The latest Hurley line consists of many different exciting graphics,
patterns and colour updates. All-over repeats appear alongside
placement graphics on basic tees, polo shirts, cargo pants and jerseys.
Designs are inspired by nature and graffiti. Tonal graphics on plaid
pants make for a very interesting story.
Colours are simple yet sophisticated. Commercial tones of black, white
and brown are lifted with washed-out all-over brights, highlighted with
streaks of neon colour.

This is the first season for Levi's kids footwear line, which is directly
inspired by the adult line.
For boys, the basic, most popular lo-tops come in three closure options
- Velcro strap, lace and slip-on. The Velcro-strap version is the best
received so far.
The most popular colours for boys' styles in leather are black and
brown, and black and denim in the canvas styles.
The girls' line consists of fun and simple ballerina styles in colourful
canvas.

Los Angeles-based Lola & James presented a unique collection made
entirely out of vintage fabrics. The designers mix vintage materials with
modern cuts and shapes to create a very fun range.
Music and cartoons are a major influence for the graphics. From Mickey
Mouse to the Doors, the shirts take on a vintage, yet contemporary and
trendy look.

Luxe Baby initially started as a crib and blankets brand, but soon
entered the world of babies' apparel, creating clothes for boys and girls
aged 0-12 months.
The majority of pieces have interesting and unusual prints inspired by
animals and nature. The graphics for boys and girls remain the same,
only the piping changes to pink or blue to specify the gender.
Very popular are the three-piece sets that come with a matching
blanket.

The entire collection is made in the US, with materials sourced mainly
from Argentina.
The line is infused with graphics of flowers, fish, polka dots and

spring/summer 2008 - a small version of its adult styles in childrenspecific colours.
Cargo pants are key for boys in either basic colours or all-over prints.
Plaid also appears throughout.
Mason's offer popular styles in multiple colourways.
A highlight from the collection includes linen cargo pants with jersey
side pockets.
The girls' collection is based on styles with very simple silhouettes,
combined with carefully selected details, such as floral waist bands.

collection as a women's only line. The recent children's swimsuit range
draws direct inspiration from the adult line, as well providing shapes
just for kids.

Michael Kors' fashion-forward footwear range features styles inspired
by his women's line, re-worked for the kidswear market.
The range consists of different ballerina flats, jellies and sandals for
sizes 0-7.
E.V.A. platform midsoles create a very feminine silhouette for the girls'
styles. Collapsible ballerina flats in shades of metallic silver and gold
come with a matching Michael Kors pouch.
The brightly coloured jellies have proved very popular, with clear and
pink being the most sought-after colours.

The spring/summer 2008 line is very colourful, with strong shades of

Cottons are organically grown and hand picked in India. Dyes,
processes and production techniques are designed to minimise damage
to the environment and support local farming communities.
The brand complements very simple designs with bold colours and fun
graphics.
The company, like most environmentally conscious brands, uses lowimpact dyes to eliminate toxins and heavy metals products. It also uses
recycled and reusable materials for the packaging.
The range includes baby bodysuits, tees, blankets, yoga pants and
accessories.
Graphics are inspired by elements of childhood and nature, and include
rabbits, sunflowers, cowboy boots and butterflies.

collection of traditionally functional pieces transformed into playful and
exciting clothes.
As children tend to collect rocks, bugs and various other small objects,

Pieces are intended to be layered with great ease of movement perfect for play time.
The collection consists mainly of apron and smock shapes, created

The New York-based brand carries baby items, including music boxes,
doorknob signs, awake/asleep door signs, albums and books that are
hand-crafted in the designer's studio.
Highlights include music boxes with song lyrics written on the sides,
and little Chinese New Year cubes, specifying what year the baby was
born in.
The collection comes in pretty, soft colours, and is perfect for giftgiving.

For spring/summer 2008, True Religion updates its jeans with various
washes and stitching on back pockets.
Key looks include coloured denims, with shades ranging from reds,
pinks, yellows and blues to black and white.
New for kids is the bold and contrasting stitching on the pockets, and a
play on graphics.
True Religion also carries a wide assortment of printed T-shirts,
wovens, jackets, shirts and jerseys. Girls' shirts feature all-over floral
prints and boys' polo shirts use various graphics and prints. Washedout jerseys in bright colours work well with the rest of the collection.

True Religion launched its kids' footwear collection at the show,
delivering both commercial and really bright colours and styles.
The silhouettes are very simple, allowing for a play of material
mixtures, graphics and colour combinations. The lo-top styles combine
textured, coated canvas with plain canvas and leather. Special
attention is paid to the linings of the shoes, making sure they are
always and interesting and fun. All-over gradient prints and graphics
make for really effective styles. Coloured-rubber adds more value to
the styles.
Sneaker-like leather ballerinas with a shorter vamp are offered for
girls.

For the first time ever, Trunk is launching the Harley-Davidson line for

Chicago.

A number of brands explored different ways of expressing concern over
the future of the environment. The trend was not limited to apparel footwear, accessories and homewares also took part. While some brands
invested in producing partially or entirely organic lines, others used
recycled paper for their hangtags and packaging.
Slogan graphics were popular as a means of promoting eco-conscious
messages. Australia-based Bindi Wear bases its entire line on wildlife
preservation, reaching out to the youngest of consumers with slogans
such as 'All of the world's wildlife deserve our protection' and 'Let's help
save our wildlife'.

The growing trend for using vintage and recycled fabrics was clearly
visable at the show. Brands such as Baby Bean and Lola & James based

experimented with all-over repeat patterns, giving the garments a new

Rock 'n' roll-inspired graphics have claimed a major stake in the Tshirt market. Brands such as Lola & James and Trunk used iconic rock
imagery from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Doors, Blondie, The Police,
Mötley Crüe and The Beatles are some of the key bands used as
inspiration for graphics.
