About the Cover ...
Thank you Annette Blomquist and Karen Baird for this great
winter photo for our cover. This picture has special meaning
for Annette. Chase, the Golden Retriever being chased by herd
of Papillons crossed over the Rainbow Bridge last year. He is
greatly missed, but this photo is a reminder of the good times.
All club members are encouraged to submit their artwork for
use in Pap Talk. Once received artwork becomes the property
of PCA to be used exclusively within PapTalk.

Message from the President
Dear Members,
A new year is upon us and before we know it the National Specialty will be here. I hope to be able to meet
each and every one of you during that week. For those of you who are unable to attend this year’s National be sure and check out “Mark Your Calendars” for a PCA Supported Show or an Independent Papillon
Specialty near you.
2011 was a record year for our breed. The goal of every breeder/exhibitor should be to produce a Papillon
capable of winning a Best in Show. Last year we had six achieve that height! (one b/w, two reds and three
tricolors - all Papillon males) Congratulations to those lovely dogs, their breeders, owners and handlers.
It speaks highly of both the judges and the breeders that fifty percent of our BIS dogs were owner-handled, two of which were breeder-owner handled. Perhaps 2012 will bring a Best in Show for some of those
lovely girls being campaigned as well as the Phalenes.
Papillons continue to tear up the rings in the companion events/performance arenas. The monthly list of
new AKC titles in this area goes beyond impressive. At the AKC Obedience Invitational of the top five
dogs in the Toy Group four were Papillons. At the AKC Agility National Papillons won both the eight inch
Standard and the eight Preferred classes. This attests to the fact that the breeders are continuing to produce sound and healthy Papillons/Phalenes.
Last year Genetics continued to work with Dr. Simon Peterson-Jones of MSU to find a marker for PRA in
our breed. Dr. Peterson-Jones will be the guest speaker at the Genetics Seminar at the National. Be sure
and attend if you can. Dr. Giger was sent funding to aid in his research on Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (NAD)
in Papillon puppies. Genetics is offering for sale at the National lovely lightweight jackets with the Genetics logo to raise money to continue to find ways to improve the health and well-being of our breed.
May 2012 be another banner year for our breed!

Grant Abstract Report Prepared for the
Papillon Club of America
December 20, 2011
01609: Probiotic VSL# 3 Reduces Enteritis in Dogs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Principal Investigator: Dr. Albert E. Jergens, DVM, PhD
Institution: Iowa State University
Total Grant Amount: $97,416.00
Grant Period: 1/1/2012 - 12/31/2013
Project Abstract:
Idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common cause of chronic gastrointestinal disease in dogs.
Accumulating evidence in human IBD and animal models suggests that imbalances in composition of the
intestinal microbiota contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic intestinal inflammation. Recent studies have also
shown that dogs with IBD have distinctly different duodenal microbial communities compared to healthy dogs.
Current treatments for IBD include the administration of nonspecific anti-inflammatory drugs which may confer
serious side effects and do not address the underlying basis for disease, namely, altered microbial composition.
Use of probiotics (viable, non-pathogenic bacteria that exert health benefits beyond basic nutrition) offers an
attractive, physiologic, and non-toxic alternative to shift the balance to protective species and treat IBD. The
aim of the proposed study is to investigate the clinical, microbiologic, and anti-inflammatory effects of
probiotic VSL#3 in the treatment of canine IBD. We hypothesis that VSL#3 used as an adjunct to standard
therapy (i.e., elimination diet and prednisone) will induce a beneficial alteration of enteric bacteria leading to
induction and maintenance of remission in dogs with IBD. A randomized, controlled clinical trial of 8 weeks
duration will assess the efficacy of standard therapy + probiotic versus standard therapy alone. There is a need
for additional data to be generated to provide proof of efficacy in probiotic therapy before these agents can be
applied to widespread clinical use. These studies will also provide highly relevant insight into the antiinflammatory effects of probiotics for treatment of human and canine IBD.
01633: Phase I S100B Inhibitor Clinical Trial for Canine Melanoma Therapy
Principal Investigator: Dr. Heather M. Wilson, DVM
Institution: Texas A&M University
Total Grant Amount: $80,000.00
Grant Period: 1/1/2012 - 12/31/2013
Project Abstract:
Spontaneous melanoma strikes an estimated 50,000 dogs each year. Even with aggressive treatment, the median
survival time is < 1 year. Our group has identified a new class of drugs, S100B inhibitors, which prevent the
growth of canine/human melanoma cells as well as in vivo murine tumors. Two of these inhibitors, pentamidine
Page 6
and chlorpromazine, are currently used in veterinary medicine to treat other diseases. Thus, it is a legitimate,
and some would say from a patient, owner, and veterinarian's perspective, a compellingly urgent question as to
whether these agents have clinical value in treating canine melanoma. The proposed study is a collaborative
effort between basic scientists and clinicians, the goal of which is to determine if combined
pentamidine/chlorpromazine therapy is safe for canine melanoma patients. There is a high probability that this
research will culminate in the identification of a new disease modifying therapy that will alleviate suffering and
improve survival for dogs, as well as other companion animals, suffering from melanoma. Finally, this therapy
may also be useful in treating other veterinary cancers that exhibit increased S100B activity, including
lymphomas, meningiomas, and nephroblastomas.
01658: Urinary Protein and Gene Expression Characterization and Comparison with Renal
Biopsy Findings and Clinical Data in Dogs with Proteinuric Renal Diseases
Principal Investigator: Dr. Mary B Nabity, DVM, PhD
Institution: Texas A&M University
Total Grant Amount: $80,000.00
Grant Period: 1/1/2012 - 12/31/2014
Project Abstract:
Primary glomerular diseases are very common causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is a significant
source of illness and death in dogs, affecting up to 15% of elderly individuals. Early treatment generally
prolongs the lives of dogs with CKD, but timely detection can be difficult and the outcome for each patient
based on current, early non-invasive testing is unpredictable.
While glomeruli are often the initiating site of kidney disease in dogs, collateral damage to the
tubulointerstitium (TI) is important in determining disease severity and progression because of the extensive
interplay between these 2 kidney compartments. Evaluations of urinary proteins have enhanced the early
identification of TI and glomerular damage and demonstrated prognostic utility in people with CKD. In
addition, particular urinary cells (called podocytes) that wash down from damaged glomeruli have been
evaluated, with increased podocyte detection indicating greater severity of glomerular damage and thus poorer
prognosis for glomerular disease in people.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate promising indicators of kidney injury that might improve detection
and/or assessment of progression or prognosis in dogs with CKD. We plan to use urine samples from dogs with
various kidney diseases to measure: 1) urinary proteins indicating tubular and glomerular damage, and 2) gene
expression profiles indicating podocyte loss. Results will be correlated with conventional measures of tubular
and glomerular function, kidney biopsy findings, and information regarding disease outcome to determine the
utility of the novel tests to non-invasively detect and accurately assess kidney damage in dogs.

More Kennel Names
editors’ note:
Huge Apologies to Stephanie and Neil Koe-
niger. the Koenigers submitted a lovely story of
how they arrived at their kennel name. However, the story only makes sense if the editors had
actually spelled Steneko correctly. The story
below is the correct version.
STENEKO - Stephanie & Neil Koeniger
BLAIRWYNN - Carrie Blair
When I first wrote it down (in our brainstorming session over a few beers), Neil pronounced it
“Stinko”!! I was *not* a happy camper about that
jab! But he liked it (pronounced *my* way) so it
stuck and we’ve been very happy with it - for both
our bulldogs and our papillons.
When we decided to choose a kennel name, Gary
and I tried so many ‘clever’ ideas - each one sillier
than the next. We finally opted for simplicity by
using our last name and the name of the street we
live on.
TOPFLITE - Sandy Schumacher
My kennel name, TopFlite, comes from the golf
world. Although my husband is not involved in
showing our Paps, he is supportive (or is it indulgent?) of my hobby, so I wanted a kennel name that
would pay homage to his interests. Other than
babysitting the dogs that stay home when I’m off
to shows, his biggest role in my hobby is naming
the dogs. As such, the search for a kennel name
fell to him. His two hobbies are viticulture and
golf. As you can imagine, a suitable name involving
grapevine cultivation just didn’t materialize. So we
turned to the game of golf.
A flite is a term from golf tournaments. Each flite,
or division, consists of golfers of roughly similar
skills. My husband is a pretty good golfer, so he is
most often grouped with the better amateur golfers in the First Flite, also known as the Top Flite.
That conjured up the image of high-flying butterflies. So there it is......TopFlite Papillons.

STARGAZER - Kathy Ainsworth
Rick and I began our journey in the Papillon world
back in 2005. Our goal was to raise rising stars in
the breed. Rick has always had a love for astronomy and spends many nights gazing at the stars in
the skies while I gaze at our stars running around
our yard. The two blended into “Stargazer”. Our
“Stars” gazing upward to new heights!
Agility 101
by Jolene Roudebusch
og agility is a relatively new
sport; making its debut in
1978 in England at the Crufts
Dog Show, as entertainment for
specters. This exhibition, based
loosely on equestrian show jumping, demonstrated the dogs’ natural speed and agility; and was a
huge hit with the crowd. In the
early 1980s dog agility came to
the United States; with the AKC
holding its first sanctioned agility match in 1994 at the Houston
Kennel Club show.
The Papillon Club
of America held its
first agility trial at
their 1997 National
Specialty in Reno,
Nevada and had
31 entries. Agility
is now one of the
fasting growing dog
sports in the U.S.
D
erhaps you
have seen a
dog agility competition on television
and thought that looks like a
fun activity to get involved in
with your dog. Agility training
is a great way to strengthen the
bond between dog and handler;
it can help shy dogs gain confidence and rambunctious dogs
learn self control. However, not
every dog should be doing agility. A dog should have good
hips, elbows, patellas and vision
to have a long, pain free agility career. Dogs doing agility
should not be overweight and be
conditioned properly, to prevent
“week-end athlete syndrome”
(muscle strains, soft tissue inju-
ries, etc). Dogs that cannot be
trusted around others dogs while
off leash are also not good candidates for agility.
If you are just starting out in
agility training with your dog,
I would suggest you look around
your area and find a training
club or instructor with experience teaching agility. Go to one
or more of their classes to watch
and see if you are comfortable
P
with the methods they use in
training.

equipment (a-frame, teeter &
dogwalk) training should wait
until the puppy has developed
the needed physical coordination to navigate a plank raised
off the ground. Serious jump
work and weave training should
wait until the dog’s growth plates
Y
are closed; this varies by breed.
Growth plates are generally
closed between 9 and 12 months
for dogs that weight under 50
pounds, and can take up to 2
years to close on the giant breeds.
The best way to know if your
dog’s growth plates have closed is
to have your dog x-rayed by your
veterinarian. Dogs cannot be entered in AKC agility trials until
at least 15 months of age, to help
insure they are physically mature
enough to handle the strain on
their bodies.
nce the basic obstacle work is
learned the dog and handler
team move on to the next phase.
This is when the verbal and body
signals needed to direct the dog
off-leash around an agility course
are trained and
practiced. These
signals not only
direct the dog to
perform specific
obstacles, but,
also give the
dog signals to
run faster/slower, turn or veer
closer or farther
away from the
handler. At the
highest levels of
competition you
can see dogs
perform these signals instantly
and accurately at extremely fast
speeds.
O
ost dogs are able to run agility until 8- 10 years of age or
older; as long as they are happy
& healthy. Pay attention to what
your dog is telling you as he gets
older; is the game still fun for
him. Consider moving him to the
lower jump heights of the performance classes as he becomes
a veteran and/or scaling back on
his competing schedule.
M
gility is a team sport; keep it
fun for you and your dog.

E.Intermingled black and tan hairs all over
head (body patches black)
of only one homozygous black dog in this country.
All his puppies are black regardless of what he is
mated to. With a lot of black breeding, ear fringes
improve but markings tend to become heavier and
the blaze to recede.
S
ABLE - is next in this color series. “Sable” is
really a misleading term and the geneticists
should find another name for it, because included
are not only all the black-shaded browns, reds and
tans, but also some clear reds, from Irish Setter
tones to light gold. There is no satisfactory theory
to account for the different shades. Sable (all the
above shades) is dominant to wolf sable and to
bicolor.
W
OLF SABLE - the colors which rather resemble the Keeshond coat, but include pale
fawn or cream with much black shading. Recessive
to everything but bicolor.
B
ICOLOR - usually expressed as black-andtan. The most desirable form of the mark-
ings comprises “pumpkin seeds” over the eyes, tan
on cheeks, inside ears, and around vent. The tan
should be bright, distinct, and not intermingled
with the black areas. Three kinds of variation may
occur with this color pattern:
1. The amount of tan, in the following series:
A.Minimal tan (small dots over eyes, only a
few tan hairs on cheeks)
Page 10
F. Head all tan, body patches black (color pattern found in Airedales and black-blanketed beagles)
2. The shade of tan, which varies from rich copper to pale cream.
3. Breaks in the bicolor pattern caused by the
white markings. Types A and B will lose the
“pips” if the dog has a very wide blaze. The tan
around the vent cannot appear unless the dog
has a black patch there. (ed. note - Approved
in 1965 the Standard called for a ‘tri’ color to
have this tan vent but was later removed from
the Standard (approved 1975) as a ‘tri’ with
an all white body would not have this vent coloration but would still be, by definition a ‘tri’
by the head markings and color). Conversely,
if the dog is heavily marked with black
patches running down thighs and forelegs, the
typical tan as seen in black-and-tan breeds
(Dobermans, Manchesters, etc) will appear.
One genetic tri which will not be recognized as
such is one of Type F with an all-white body,
as the only visible color is tan.
P
ROBLEMS RELATING TO BLACK - Some
blacks are rusty with intermingling of tan
or gray hairs. It is sometimes difficult for a novice
to decide whether a dog is a tricolor with minimal
tan (Type A), or a rusty black. It may require much
experience plus a knowledge of the colors in the
background.
The second problem is that occasionally a black
puppy appears from two red or sable parents.
article was written in 1969 - fawn and white is now
Assuming that the breeder was not in error as to
an allowable color in Paps)
which stud was really the sire, this can occasionally happen. This is not a “recessive black” as it
is sometimes called, but a re-assortment of genes
when a red, sable or wolf sable meets up with a red
of different genetic make-up. Sable Papillons and
some red Paps are genetically of the same make-up
as sable Collies. Some red Papillons are the formula of Golden Retrievers or Yellow Labradors. When
a sable collie is crossed with a Golden Retriever or
Yellow Lab, black puppies result. Proof that this
is not a “recessive black” is that sable to sable in
collies does not produce black, nor do blacks appear
in Yellow Lab or Golden Retriever breeding. There
is a full explanation of these “synthetic blacks” in
the books of C.C. Little and Marca Burns. There
is nothing the matter with such “synthetic blacks”
and in future matings they will behave like any
other black.
L
IVER - Most Papillons nowadays are BB,
some Bb, which merely means that they have
black pigmentation, regardless of coat color. Noses
and eye rims are black; toenails, if not white, will
be black.
If a dog is bb, and otherwise has the same genetic
formula as a black Pap, the color will be “liver” or
“chocolate”. Eye rims, nose and toenails will also be
brown. This is the color most common to Springer
Spaniel, also in Irish and American Water Spaniels, etc. If the dog is genetically a red and carries a
pair of b genes, it will be a brown-nosed red; indistinguishable from this is the genetic chocolate
which also carries a dilution factor. If the dog is
a bicolor carrying a bb pair, it will be a “chocolate
tri”. This is the color of the brown Dobe. This last
color with a dilution factor will be fawn although
the bicolor markings may be visible at birth. (ed
note: This was the Standard in place when this
All these colors carrying the bb pair are disqualified
under our present Standard, although all are typical Spaniel colors and only a few decades ago
were very common in the breed. If one turns up in
your breeding, this is not disgrace, and the parents
need not be condemned to future celibacy. (But do
not register or breed from the bb offspring.) the
colors were banned because it is impossible to
prevent cross-color breeding and eventually all our
reds might have brown noses. However, the whole
questions is debatable, and some future Standard
might allow these colors again.
W
HITE MARKINGS - this is a complex
subject which would require a separate ar-
ticle. In general heavier markings are dominant to
greater areas of white. White markings are inherited independently of color, except that in breeding
black to black, bicolor to bicolor, or one to the other,
there is a tendency for the puppies to be more heavily marked than in breeding reds and sables. We
will probably never stabilize perfect markings or
entirely eliminate mismarks.
T
his skims over the subject lightly. Full treatment would take a book. In most cases it is of
theoretical interest only as the limited amount of
good stock available to the breeder does not permit of much color breeding. We do not recommend
anyone trying to establish a strain of one color only
as the problems involved would necessitate keeping
a very large number of breeding animals. It also
limits sales potential, a practical problem we must
consider.

This a story that I would like to share with the membership to get a good
laugh as much as I did as well as all the friends and family members I
have told...if my dad only knew...
While sitting at the dinner table, my dad had just opened a package of
oyster crackers and put them in his chili. He stirred it up and took a few
bites. He had a look on his face that said more than words like, “this
really doesn’t taste so good.” The papillons and my only little jack russell
begged at his feet in hopes of him sharing the chili.
“These crackers are stale.” he commented. My heart slid to my stomach as
I suddenly remembered the sample packages of Charlie Bears dog biscuits
I had set on the table! They were missing! “Dad, what happened to those
little bags of dog treats I left sitting there?” Yep, he put them in his chili!
So there is your lesson for the day. Always put your glasses on or read the
labels!

(The Questionmark department was a monthly column, so to speak, that appeared in Pap Talk in the late
60’s - much like a modern day Breeder’s Forum but
in this case it was mainly the Editor, Virginia Newton,
who responded to the questions)
QUESTION: A big breeder told me she did not
offer Phalenes to those planning to show, because
they don’t get a fair shake in the ring. Is this true?
Are Phalenes really discriminated against? Should
they be? If they are and should not be, is it possible
to rectify this, and how? Just how many Phalenes
are there, and how many are being shown?
PAP TALK SAYS: We, too, would not offer an
Phalene to a Novice for show. The novice exhibitor would be quickly crushed by the judges asking, “What’s the matter with its ears? Oh, I never
heard of that before.” Etc. ad nauseam. Mrs. Kemmerer had enough prestige - and made enough of
her own competition - that she finished Ch. Espoir
de Ruysselede and his son, Ch. Dulceda’s Altair.
Miss Burdett in Texas finished her Barbara Belle
of Milnermere. Miss Pinckney’s Bijou des Poids
Plume was WB at both the 1954 & 1956 Specialties, and did finish. Dr. Evans put something like
8 points on Fee des Sapins, but did not persist with
her. He and the Farners each have a Phalene they
show occasionally. Off hand, that’s about all we
can think of in the ring in the past 20 years.
In Belgium and the other F.C.I. countries, there are
two separate breeds, Papillons and Phalenes. We
are not sure if they compete separately in Sweden
- we think not - but there are now three Phalene
champions there. We have never heard of any
being shown in Britain in recent years, although
Mrs. Swann of the Lacewings apparently does deliberately breed some. In this country most of the
long-time breeders feel that the Phalene was the
original dog and should not be allowed to become
extinct, but nobody has set up a breeding program
for them.
As to how many there are PAP TALK has no idea
and would be very interested in figures supplied
by our readers. Let’s have a census. If the A.K.C.
approves our request for separate Open classes at
the Specialty, this will be a first step to encourage
people to show their Phalenes. If we find there are
enough of them, the P.C.A. Board should discuss
further steps to promote their exhibition. This is
the only way to educate judges.
(From Pap Talk - March 1969 - the Questionmark department)
QUESTION: If you have a Phalene, is it okay to
use it with erect eared stock?
PAP TALK SAYS: Better not. There are exceptions where this has turned out well with subsequent generations showing no ear weakness. There
are also horrible examples where a dog with weak
ears (not necessarily a Phalene) was used, and
floppy ears result in many of the offspring down
through four and five generations and more.
Many years ago, the late Mrs. Rademacher wished
to improve the size of ears on her Harleymeads,
and embarked on a controlled breeding program
wherein she bred her erect eared stock to some of
the Belgian Phalenes of the day, which had particularly huge ears. She did improve ear size, and did
get most of the ears back up after some four generations. However, when Mrs. Kemmerer bought
her famous Flash of Harleymeads in England as a
young dog, his ears were up. While she was showing him to his championship, his ears were down.
He was bred to about every bitch in the country
(stud work tends to stiffen ears, as Sheltie and
Collie owners learn to their sorrow) and from his
middle years on his ears were always up.
Flash was something like the sixth generation
from the start of this project. He sired one Phalene
champion, Miss Burdett’s Barbara Belle of Milnermere, and quite a few of his children and grandchildren had weak ears.
On the other hand, if you wish to breed Phalenes,
you are on your own. Nobody in this country or
in England has every tried it. Two Phalenes can
throw offspring with erect ears. We can only suggest breeding the best possible stock together and
praying for a little luck.

department)

What to Feed the Dog
The Ladies Dog Club had the pleasure of
hearing Dr. Rebecca Remillard, PhD, DVM, Diplomate ACVN speak on the above topic. Below are some of the notes I took on her
talk.
T
he pet food market is a huge business. Entrepreneurs want a piece of this action. They work on
marketing rules but who works on the science?
The Association Of American Feed Control
Officials, Inc. (AAFCO) is the organization that proposes
regulations related to safety and quality in animal feeds.
While AAFCO proposes, the states may or may not adopt
these standards in whole or in part. Feeding dogs is not that
difficult, actually. The USDA is in charge of food safety.
USDA works to make sure food is wholesome and that no
BSE cows are included. For example, the FDA handles
health claims made by food companies. Some foods promote longevity, tarter control, weight control etc. FDA is
supposed to be in charge of making sure such claims are
backed up by science. Bottom line though, is that FDA has
more important things to do and limited resources. In the
matter of dog food it is - buyer beware.
Anyone can make a dog food. They make a list of ingredients and get someone to put it together and put it in a container and it goes up for sale. Are there breed differences
related to dog food? Probably. Dogs are the most diverse
species on earth. But there are no studies on feeding and
breed differences. It’s all anecdotal at this point. The National Research Council summarizes ~25 nutrients needed
by dogs to remain healthy. As a Veterinarian Nutritionist,
Dr. Remillard stated she spends 90% of her time working
on diets for dogs that are sick. Now that the dog genome
has been mapped, it may become possible to target foods
for specific dog breeds or specific conditions that occur
genetically in the dog.
An important thing to know about dog food is that only a
few of the bigger companies actually test feed their food
before putting it on the shelf. When you are looking at a
bag of dog food, the most important thing on the bag is the
AAFCO statement. Any dog food that claims to be “complete and balanced”, and this is a legal term, should have
the AAFCO statement somewhere on the bag. The statement has to say how that “complete and balanced” statement is substantiated. There are two methods:
1.through feeding tests with animals (minimum 6 month tests)
2.from laboratory analysis of nutrients
Page 22
notes taken by Charlotte McGowan
Preferable is the feeding test. When a food is labeled “All
life stages” it must meet the minimum requirements for
healthy puppy growth. AAFCO proposes the minimum
required in the dog food (and a few nutrient maximums).
Some of the large companies make several different products lines of food. Hills, Purina, Royal Canin and Iams
make over the counter food and veterinary specialty products. The veterinary products are designed for very specific
issues. People need to understand that over the counter
foods and made-for-vets foods are different. Over the
counter products can change without notice. Dogs are out
eating things in their yards from dirt, to grass, and all kinds
of things (trees, snack, toys, garbage, supplements, probiotics) and 90% of dogs can handle any fluctuations in product
consistency of over the counter products. But anyone with a
dog that has medical issues should understand that an over
the counter product that seems to be very close to a veterinary product isn’t the same thing.
One person in attendance brought up the Whole Dog Journal and stated that once a year they list the ingredients in all
the various dog foods. The question: do ingredients count?
It is a good question, but overall “no”. Good companies
analyze the ingredients they use in foods. If they get a truck
load of corn they attempt to ascertain the quality of that
ingredient. Some companies don’t take that time. People
make themselves crazy reading ingredients because the list
is not as informative as most people believe – there is NO
way to determine ingredient quality reading the list.
Raw feeding has been used by some people. There are a
couple of notable problems with raw feeding.
1. Nearly all raw feeding is not nutritionally balanced – This can easily be corrected
2. zoonotic diseases have been associated with raw
feeding.
Our meat sources are to be considered contaminated according to the USDA. Over 1000 subspecies of salmonella
have been identified. Dogs do get food poisoning and some
of them die from it. There is no nutritional advantage to
raw feeding and no scientific benefit to recommend it.
There is a substantial risk to raw feeding, especially if there
are children, people with compromised immune systems,
or cats with FeLv or FIV in the household. There is a case
of a child who was hospitalized with salmonella and then
finally cured. In searching for the cause of the infection,
it was traced to the kitchen counter and raw dog food fed
to the dogs in the household. While some people claim to
have fed raw successfully for years, they can count themselves as lucky.
Puppies cannot control their uptake of calcium until they
are 8-10 months old. Large breeds are most affected by
calcium content, but there is no requirement that calcium
content be listed on the dog food bag.
Many of the so called high end designer foods are heavy in
protein. A dog really doesn’t need more than 10 -12% of his
food as high quality protein. If there is too much protein in
a food it has to be excreted. It can make the kidneys work
extra hard and potentially damage them and kidneys do not
regenerate.
There are only a few companies that test feed their dog
food. These include Purina, Hill’s, Royal Canin and Iams.
Small companies don’t have the resources to test feed
and so these are not a first choice. Only three companies
employ a veterinary nutritionist - Purina, Hills and Royal
Canin.
Some dog foods advertise “human grade” ingredients. But
there are technically no grades of ingredients so that can
be misleading. Dogs don’t have to have grains. What dogs
do need are vitamins, minerals, protein, and energy (as fat
or carbohydrates.) Of these ingredients, dogs with allergies are only allergic to proteins. Food intolerance may be
related to carbohydrates and environmental factors. With
regard to additives, herbs are actually dilute forms of various drugs. Herbs should not be given and do not have any
nutritional value. Vitamin A and D can cause toxicity when
there is too much. When adding minerals, be careful about
zinc and copper. Fish oil has EPA, DHA which are fatty
acids of importance. A minimum phosphorus level of 0.6%
is required by AAFCO for over the counter foods. Veterinary products can be lower as needed for dogs with renal
disease.
PETA has done great harm in that it has impeded research
on dog foods and the test feeding of dog foods. PETA
infiltrated a dog food company doing testing and produced
negative publicity for the company. This sort of thing
causes companies to thing twice about testing. But testing
dog food before it goes on the market benefits dogs. It is
a good thing to have small companies bought out by the
larger companies since the larger companies have more
resources to test their food. Waltham (makers of Pedigree,
Nutro, and Royal Canin) sells more dog food than any
other company in the world.
I asked a question about food recalls due to aflotoxin.
Aflotoxin grows on corn and should be detected at the time
corn is received as an ingredient to be put in dog food.
Companies have to inspect ingredients before adding them.
The recall of dog food that contained Melamine came about
when the supplier in China was being deceitful about what
they had done. When companies buy ingredients out of the
country, monitoring the quality of the ingredients becomes
difficult.
Another issue related to food is how the food is transported.
If the food is shipped long distances, does it get overheated,
frozen etc.? This can be a problem affecting food quality.
The bigger companies have learned that using their own
transportation and keeping control of the food from factory
to point of sale helps insure the quality of the food.
Dr. Remillard made a point to say she was not associated
with any dog food company so was speaking as an unbiased person. She did say that in her practice as a veterinary
nutritionist she does use the veterinary products made by
the few companies that make them because the foods are
made consistent which is essential when managing a medical condition
After listening to this very enlightening talk, I came away
with the conclusion that sticking with the companies that
do food testing is a good idea. Those companies again are
Purina, Hills, Royal Canin and Iams. Interesting to note
that of these companies, I have seen these four companies
as supportive of purebred dog events and of course Purina
is a major sponsor of the Canine Health Foundation. I also
found Royal Canin and Iams listed as donors. While Doctor
Remillard did not single out any company or food, I found
her talk helpful which is why I want to share these notes
with you.
Dr. Remillard graduated from Purdue with a
degree in animal nutrition and went on to a PhD
at Colorado State. She got her DVM at Tufts and
interned and completed a 2 yr residency at Virginia
Tech. Post graduate, she worked at Johns Hopkins
Medical School before coming to Boston where she
practices as a Veterinary Nutritionist at Angell
Animal Medical Center in Boston.
