Our Baptism and Confirmation calls us to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work places, and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent, and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming people and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s Love. Mortgage payments are $41,500 per month (interest and principal). The Archdiocese loaned us the money to start our parish and build our facilities on the basis of a commitment to Stewardship by the parish. We thank everyone whose support enables us to do the work of our parish. Last Month May Year-to-Date July 1 - May 31 Actual Budget $130,839 $138,000 $1,351,565 $1,389,000 From Our Pastor Dear People of St. Stephen, Happy Father’s Day to all the men who bless our community with the gift of a father’s love. Father’s Day tends to get lost in the midst of the holidays of our culture. Yet all the social science studies point to the importance of fathers in communicating values to their children. Fathers certainly have a key role in handing on the gift of faith to their children. Today we give thanks to our fathers for all the ways that they have blessed us with their love, guidance, and protection. Be sure to thank your father this weekend. We also remember in prayer all our deceased fathers and grandfathers. The Joyful Noiseletter published “A Father’s Prayer” in their current issue, and I would like to share it with you: “Heavenly Father, make me a better parent. Teach me to understand my children, and to listen patiently to what they have to say, and to answer all their questions kindly. Keep me from interrupting them or contradicting them. Make me as courteous to them as I would have them be to me. Bless me with the bigness to grant them all their reasonable requests, and the courage to deny them privileges that I know will do them harm. Make me fair and just and kind. And fit me, O Lord, to be loved and respected and imitated by my children. Amen.” -Author unknown via Apple Seeds. (Reprinted with permission.) May God bless all of our fathers for all the love that they give to us. This coming Friday evening we are joining with St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis, St. Julie, and Cardinal Bernardin School and sponsoring the first “Roof Fest” party and car raffle to pay the cost for repairs on the school building resulting from poor materials in the walls and windows in the original construction. Our parish school contributed $100,000 and St. Elizabeth Seton parish contributed $60,000 for the $385,000 cost for the repairs. Our goal is to raise $225,000 in the coming four years to be sure that there are adequate funds to pay for the planned capital repairs that money had been set aside for over the years but which had to be used to pay for the unexpected repairs from the original construction. The “Roof Fest” party will be under a tent in the St. Julie parking lot, 7399 W. 159th Street, from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM on June 24. A DJ will provide music and dancing; there will be food (pizza by Palermo’s, a Mexican food truck, desserts) and drink (beer, wine, soft drinks, and water) at reasonable prices as well as some activities for adults. The admission for the party is five dollars. The drawing for the raffle of the Ford Focus will be at 9:30 PM. Raffle tickets and tickets for the party are available at the parish office. You do not need to buy a raffle ticket to join in the party. I invite you to join with our fellow Catholics from the surrounding parishes for an enjoyable evening this Friday. We do need a few volunteers to help with a one and a half hour shift at the party. If you’re willing to help, please contact me at the parish office. I look forward to sharing this evening with as many of you as possible this Friday. On another topic, I invite you to visit the grotto area around the St. Francis statue at the southwest end of our parking lot. Jason House of our parish has added to the grotto area by the work on his Eagle Scout project. Jason added some bushes and other plants behind the statue, a bench near the statue, and a rock quoting Pope Francis’ words in his encyclical on the environment: Let Us Care for Our Common Home. Jason’s work reminds us of the Pope’s message to care for the world that God has created for us to live in. The grotto thus honors St. Francis of Assisi as both the patron saint of animals and the patron saint of the environment. The butterfly bench and the statue were donated about 10 years ago in memory of Kassidi Smith, a 6½-year-old girl who died in 2004. I invite you to take time to visit and pray in this grotto area. Say a prayer for Kassidi and for the protection of our environment. Special thanks to Jason and to his scout troop for their work on this project. May God bless you and your loved ones. Fr. Jay Spiritual Life New Ways to Honor or to Remember a Loved One St. Stephen Parish would like to offer our parishioners two new opportunities to honor or to remember their loved ones. Starting in July, parishioners may sponsor the Sanctuary candle or a bouquet of flowers placed in front of the Holy Family statue. The dedicated candle or bouquet may be requested to commemorate a special occasion (e.g. anniversary, baptism, ordination, etc.) or in memory of a departed loved one. Remembrance information (sponsor and those celebrated or remembered) will be published each week in the bulletin if there is a sponsor for that week. If you would like to sponsor the Sanctuary candle or the Holy Family flowers for a special occasion or for a memorial, please stop by the parish office. Reservations are now open for July 2016 through December 2017. A recommended donation of $50 is requested. Weekly bouquets will be seasonal, freshcut flowers provided by Hearts and Flowers Florist. If you have any questions, please contact Karen or Stacy in the parish office at 708-342-2400. Thank you to the parishioners who shared this nice idea with the parish office. Are You Interested In Becoming Catholic? Do you have questions about the Catholic faith? Have you been thinking about becoming Catholic? Would you like to learn more about the Catholic faith without making a final commitment? The answer to these questions is RCIA - the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. RCIA is a process through which men and women enter the Catholic Church and receive the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. The process is a spiritual journey where adults grow in their relationship with God by learning about Catholic beliefs, practices, and teachings of the Church. They get acquainted with the faith community and participate in public and private prayer, faith sharing, and the observance of feasts, rites, and Sunday Masses. Our journey at St. Stephen will begin on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 9:30am. Our informal sessions meet every Sunday and give you the perfect opportunity to have all of your questions answered. Clergy members and trained catechists will meet with you and walk with you on your “Journey of Faith”. If you want more information about the process or have any questions, please contact Barbara Black by email at [email protected] or by phone at (708) 466-9962. We look forward to meeting you and having you join us. Peter’s Pence Collection Next Weekend—June 25 & 26 Each year the annual Peter’s Pence Collection in support of the works of the Holy Father is held in parishes throughout the world. The proceeds from this Collection fund emergency relief assistance to those who suffer from war, oppression, disease, and natural disasters. Through works of charity Catholics provide a powerful witness of love and deeds to empower the weak, the defenseless, the voiceless, and to sustain those who suffer. As we participate in this special appeal, which will occur next weekend June 25 & 26, we join more than one billion Catholics worldwide in a loving expression of solidarity. We share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe. As a parish we will no longer have an actual second collection for this need, but as a parish we will send a contribution based on previous years’ contributions. So we ask you to increase your regular donations which become part of our parish’s donation to the Peter’s Pence Collection and other eliminated second contributions. The need for our support for the Peter’s Pence Collection is important in addressing the needs of people around the world. Faith Series Book Discussion We will begin a new series of books offered by the Paulists on Saturday, July 23 at 8:45am in the parish offices and will meet for six sessions. The sessions will consist of Scripture readings, essays, discussions, sharing, and times of prayer. The first book in the series is entitled Deepening Faith. It is about exploring our connections to God and to each other through the signs of God’s love by focusing on the sacraments. The format of the meetings will be very similar to those we did with the Living the Eucharist program in which many parishioners participated. The books will be on sale after all Masses on the weekends of July 9 & 10 and July 16 & 17 for $5 each. If you would like to start a group in your home, please contact Barbara Black at [email protected] or (708) 466-9962 so additional books can be ordered and available for the participants. These are wonderful times we get to share with family and friends enhancing or building relationships. To find churches and Mass times in the area you are visiting, we suggest Masstimes.org. If you own a smart phone, they also have an app! It’s a wonderful tool to use when traveling. Also, please don’t forget St. Stephen during the summer months with your Sunday donation. We are truly grateful for your stewardship while you are away. Did you know that you can set up automatic giving for your Sunday contributions via Give Central? Go to our website www.ststephentinley.com and click on Online Giving on the left side, then click on Give Central. You can schedule your contributions for the frequency that you would like—one time, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or quarterly. May God continue to bless you and those you love with a safe and relaxing summer. Tymczasem chodzi o to, by pomóc Jezusowi w drodze krzyżowej i, niosąc swój własny krzyż, być bliżej Niego. No i jak to, mamy to znosić? A gdzie nasze życie, rodziny? A tak w ogóle, to o co jeszcze chodzi? No to zacznijmy od początku. Jezu Chryste, dzięki Tobie jesteśmy w Kościele i jesteśmy Kościołem. Pomóż nam wzrastać w wierze i żyć wiarą w każdym czasie i w każdej sytuacji. Przez Chrystusa, z Chrystusem i w Chrystusie. Amen.
