Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What will we do? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Please consider the possibility of being a lector here at St. Albert the Great. No special expertise is required. All you need is faith and a belief that you can. God does not ask for our ability or our inability, but our availability. Please, call the parish office and leave your name and the best way for us to contact you. We look forward to hearing from you. LET US PRAY For the deceased: Saul Rodriguez, Edison Ochoa. Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard. My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on. When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away. My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back. When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm so I sit self-consciously and listen. My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them, they make up their own. When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk. My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the ground laughing. When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that. My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy." When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets. My kids sit in it. They see ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL PLEDGE REPORT “Entrusted with Responsibility” The monthly pledge billings for the Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal pledges have been mailed. PARISH GOAL: $53,349.84 AMOUNT PLEDGED: $64,838.00 AMOUNT PAID: $47,174.14 REMAINING BALANCE: $17,663.86 The Baptismal Preparation Class for September Baptisms will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Church. This class is a requirement for parents who have made arrangements to have their child baptized. Pre-registration is required. dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with. I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from? No wonder God loves the little children! Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!!! "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away." Author Unknown The St. Albert the Great Catholic School Theme for 2015-2016 is “Ensuring A Faith Filled Future.” The Archbishop of Chicago recently addressed the Archdiocese of Chicago school leaders and stated: “You don’t drop your child off at religious education, go shopping, run errands, come back in an hour and pick up a Catholic”. St. Albert the Great is still accepting applications for admission. Contact the school office at 708-424-7757 for registration information as well as financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Terrence K. O'Rourke, Principal St. Albert the Great "A Tradition of Academic Excellence" stalbertthegreatschool.com TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long‑delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve. —Rev.
