Publisher’s Letter
n 15 years as a publisher, I’ve seen
publications rise and fall, come and go.
We’ve survived this long on talent and
hard work. In my experience, I’ve seen such
talent come and go as well. Last month
CLEVER! moved forward without the original editor, Cathy Stahl. We believe in
CLEVER! and are proud of the way it contributes to the fashion savvy community
out there. I want to thank Cathy Stahl for
her vision and her unique insight into the
minds of readers everywhere. Cathy was
adamant that there were others just like
her: readers who were visually inclined
with short attention spans, and she was
correct. In just about 18-months Cathy’s
vision proved to be correct. The past year
and a half has been exhausting and Cathy
had worked non-stop to put the next issue
together, and the one after that and so on it
went. Cathy has elected to move on and so
must we. And now our task is to get that
next issue out of the door, not for CLEVER!
itself, but for all of you who love this magazine. All of us here at CLEVER! want to
wish Cathy all of the best in whatever it is
that she will do next.
I
I want to speak directly to our advertisers
and other supporters of CLEVER! maga4

zine, for you are the foundation of our success. Although Cathy was our editor, she
wasn’t the only player on the team. Our
organization is made up of many talented
people and we will continue to grow
CLEVER! from a “sapling” into a “tree”.
We will water and nurture this “sapling”,
encouraging its roots deep into the
Truckee-Meadows soil and watch as the
canopy spreads tall and wide, for all of the
community to see and enjoy, metaphorically speaking of course.
We also contend that CLEVER! magazine
is a great value for our advertisers. Our
full-color ad rates and targeted distribution provide local merchants and service
providers with a tremendous value proposition. We do not drop thousands of copies
of our magazine unwanted in driveways
or mailboxes all over town. We focus like
a laser beam to the “right thousand” as
opposed to any thousand. That is what
makes CLEVER! a unique and affordable
advertising proposition; we get results
because our readers are selective. They
seek out our magazine each and every
month. Just ask the merchants that carry
our publication. Consumers come into
their store just to pick CLEVER! up each
month. What a great opportunity for
merchants to make contact with those
customers each and every month of the
year. You too can be a part of that network by simply contacting our office.
I have always tried to operate under the
Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.” Even
when others get down in the gutter I
refuse to go there. It is my preference to
look you in the eye and to do exactly what
I say I will do. So it is my solemn promise
to you that we will provide you with a
quality product at a fair price and if we
don’t live up to that you can come directly
to me and I will see that we make things
right for you. No middlemen, no 800
numbers, no charts and graphs, just business between two people – and you have
my word on that.
I would like to close this note with a fashion joke my daughter told me:
Q: What did the number 0 say to the
number 8?
A: Nice Belt.
Until next month,
Ken Moen

ON OUR COVER

A Clever person is one who is original, bright, and
stylish. This month CLEVER! sat down with Jenna
Harlin of Salon Platinum. Jenna fits the mold on
several levels, as she’s owned a clothing boutique and
now currently runs a chic salon on California Ave.
The salon itself feels like a place off Rodeo drive, with
the mauve and patterned walls, a glistening hardwood floor and black leather beauty chairs. It’s classy,
it’s swanky, and it fits Jenna’s style and the fashion
sense she brings to the Reno community. Here’s a little more about Jenna:
First, the name Salon
Platinum, where did it
come from?
We were on a family trip in
L.A. and we were driving
downtown when I saw a
store called Platinum. It was
funny because that’s the
name I had in mind already
for the salon and my mom
said I guess it’s meant to be.
It is also kinda funny since
I’m a brunette.

After running a clothing
boutique for several
years, why did you
become involved in the
salon business?
I was actually in the salon
business first. I had been
doing hair for many years
when I bought The Attic. I
had always wanted to own a
boutique and just went for it.
I continued doing hair all of
the 31/2 years that I owned
the boutique. I just got to a
point that doing both and
having three kids was way too
difficult. For my own well
being I decided to go back to
my first passion. Being a business owner before, I knew I
didn’t want to work for anyone else again so I opened my
own salon and put The Attic
behind me. That was the best
decision ever!
What’s your inspiration?
Personally, my kids inspire
me the most. They make me
want to be the best person I
can and to cherish every
moment life has to offer. My
mom is also a huge inspiration. Our ideas feed off each
other, which brings out my
best creativity. She is also
the greatest person I know.
As far as business goes,
fashion is a huge part of my
inspiration. I love making
people feel great about
themselves and giving them
the style best for them does
that.
www.clevermagazine.net
What’s a typical day at the salon?
The vibe of the salon is very hip and laid
back. The music is always playing, sometimes maybe a little to loud but that’s the
way we like it. The girls are the best in
the industry, very fun and creative. We
have a great time with each other and
can get a little silly sometimes. It’s usually pretty busy and the energy is amazing. The salon has such a great flow
about it.
What are your hair “don’ts?”
If you have to fight with your hair and it
takes longer than 20 minutes, it’s not the
right style for you. If you have the right
cut for your hair type, it should be pretty
easy. The thing that bothers me the most
is when someone won’t try something
new and they’ve had the same style for
way too long. Step out of the comfort
zone every once in a while. You will probably be really happy you did.
www.clevermagazine.net
What is your signature style?
I’m all about a great pair of jeans and
fantastic heels. I wear a lot of dresses.
Once it gets warm, that’s pretty much
all I wear. You can throw on a dress
and always look polished. I wish more
girls would wear them more often. I
always wear big earrings. They’re a
must. My hair is usually pretty sleek
and dark. My signature would have to
be my short choppy bangs and long
pieces in the front.
How do you run a business, do hair
and have three kids?
I have a lot of support. My husband
Brian being one of them. We’ve been
married for nine years and he’s always
been there for me. He has great ideas
and opinions. I couldn’t do any of this
without him. My mom is my best friend
and the best nana any kid could ever
have. She is my biggest supporter and
none of this would be possible without
her. She also watches my kids while I’m
at the salon and does all the book keeping.
I have three amazing children, Liam, 8,
Cole, 4 and Sophie, 2.
Clothing brand, hair products and
shoes?
Clothing brand is Saint Grace. Hair
product is MOP
(modern organic
products) sold at
the salon.
Shoes
would be
Cole Han,
Steve
Madden
and
Chinese
Laundry.

Palettes are wonderful because they are a
great value, they
come with a lot of
great colors that look
great together and
they are beautiful to
carry around! I’ve collected my favorite
from this season and
a step-by-step howto, so you can use
your palette to its full
potential.
STEP 1. Take the lightest
color and apply it from
under the brow to the lash
line and in the inside corner of the eye.
STEP 2. Using the next
color apply a light wash of
color from under the brow
bone to the lash line.
STEP 3. With the next
color apply shadow from
under the brow bone to
the lash line focusing on
the outer two thirds of the
eye. Stop here for a day
look. You’re gorgeous!
Urban Decay receives the
award for queen of the palettes
with this eco-chic, bamboo,
and sustainable 10 shadow
box. The colors are flattering
and little bit wild. They’ve
included their shadow potion
so the glitter will stay in place.

Pick your favorite
blooms at any local
flower resource and
create the perfect
bouquet! Odd numbers are more aesthetically pleasing to the
eye, so I always think
in terms of threes. I
picked two shades of
purple and one yellow
for pop. If using tulips
as I did, leave just
about an inch or so of
water in the vase. Too
much water will cause
them to wilt faster.
Try sending your guests

($2.85) just for the occasion. There is individualized packaging available

A light and coordinated cocktail would be a
base layer of

the Champagne on
top… creates the most
beautiful layering effect
that is sure to entice
your guests to imbibe!

April Showers, a gender bender of color combination allows you to prepare to throw all those couple, bridal and baby showers that seem so
abundant this time of year. One of my favorite color combinations
(amethyst, orange and yellow) lends itself to both males and females,
making it the perfect party palette!
I developed a Meyer Lemon Lavender Shortbread. This crunchy, buttery cookie would be amazing for a
tea or plated with a rich, dense blue cheese.
1 ½ cups all purpose flour
⅔ cup powdered sugar
¼ cup cornstarch
3 teaspoons meyer lemon zest
1 tablespoon dried lavender
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup chilled butter cut in cubes
Juice of one meyer lemon
Sift together flour, powdered sugar, cornstarch and salt in a bowl. Add lemon zest
and lavender and mix until well combined. Cut in chilled butter with hands or
food processor (like making a pie dough). Add lemon juice until dough is just
coming together. Press into the bottom of a 9x12 pan. Bake at 300°F until a crisp
golden brown (approx. 45-50 min.). While still fairly hot, score into the size bars
you choose. Leave in pan until completely cool. I found the flavor mellowed and
became even more delicious after 24 hours.

New this season, but previously owned by the fashion industry
in earlier years (think 80s Chanel gold chain strap handbag),
the It-Bag of the moment is the multi-functional, multi-style,
multi-chic shoulder bag.
Not your typical fanny bag made cross body purse, you know,
Aunt Dorthy’s all black 10-pocket organizer with easy access
cell phone slot and key holder. No, no. The new shoulder bag
is not only adjustable and convertible, but also oh-so-boho
with slouchy big hobo style to a fabulous utilitarian tote and
dressed up clutches for nights out on the town.
Shyla, striped hobo,
$29.50, www.delias.com
Look for fun ornamental extras, like fringe, tassels, fancy buckles and exquisite stitching. With longer straps, designers
indulge with creative, stunning alternatives like chain and rope.
Spring, as always, is all about color, so watch for vibrant purples, yellows and blues. But also look for this classic bag to
come in classic earthy tones, metallics and creamy white.
Stand out with this major must-have bag by pairing with a
cute ruffled plaid top, dark wash skinny jeans and brown
leather high heeled slouchy boots.
Make it happen with this main accessory and get a shoulder
up on this season’s most stylish bag.

Tropical Simplicity
This variation of Halo-Halo plays on its tropical origins and is an exotic medley that you
can make any time of year!
April’s Crazy Tasty brings us to the Philippines, a chain of islands in
the South Pacific. During the hot, dry season, Filipinos love eating
Halo-Halo, which literally translates to “mix-mix.” The ingredients
are layered, served in a tall glass with a long-handled parfait
spoon. Before eating, mix all the layers well, so you can have
some of everything in each sweet creamy bite.
Spoon the following ingredients into a
tall glass:
3 teaspoons macapuno
3 teaspoons canned crushed pineapple
3 teaspoons canned tropical fruit cocktail
¾ cup crushed ice
Pour ½ cup of evaporated milk over the ice
and top with mango ice cream.
Strawberry-KiwiPineapple Mélange
The fresh fruit lightens up the traditional
Halo-Halo. The ingredients pop with color
and the tart flavor is balanced by the thick
creaminess of the evaporated milk.
Place the following ingredients into a
tall glass:
½ cup strawberries, chopped in small 1/8
inch pieces
½ cup kiwi, chopped in small 1/8 inch pieces
¾ cup crushed ice
Pour ½ cup of evaporated milk over the ice.
If you don’t have time, try Halo-Halo ice
cream made by Magnolia.

Traditional Halo-Halo
There is no one way to make Halo-Halo. Below is a basic recipe for Halo-Halo. But I’ve had
some versions with all the ingredients below plus leche flan (custard with caramel),
sweetened taro root paste, colorful agar agar gelatin, sweetened corn and avocado, just
to name a few, in different combinations.
All of these ingredients, except for the ice and evaporated milk, are preserved in
sugar syrup, packed in jars. You can find them in almost any Asian store and some
chain grocers in the Asian aisle.
Layer these ingredients in the following order into a tall glass:
2 teaspoons sweet red beans
2 teaspoons sweet white beans
2 teaspoons sugar palm
1 teaspoon jackfruit strips
3 teaspoons nata de coco (coconut gel formed into cubes)
3 teaspoons macapuno (a variety of young coconut)
¾ cup of crushed ice
Pour ½ cup of evaporated milk over the ice and top with mango ice cream.

Moldy Lunch Bags
You’ve tried everything, planted decoy salads,
faked expiration dates on your yogurt, put your
Lucky Charms in a bran flakes box, but nothing
throws the fridge stalker off your trail. Give AntiTheft Lunch Bags a try. The plastic baggies have green splotches
on both sides, making
your sandwich look
spoiled. Even the stickiest of fingers will resist a
moldy-looking roast beef
on rye. These genius
inventions come 25 to a
pack and are reusable and
recyclable.

Pillows
Photos by
Jill Bent
Sure, your home is your sanctuary. If “sanctuaries”
are filled with crap, mismatched pillows and cardboard boxes posing as coffee tables. Cambridgebased designer Jill Bent is here to help. The selftaught seamstress hand makes accent pillows using
vintage and all natural fabrics from France and
Japan, then pays homage to their past with simple
yet utterly elegant designs. Your cluttered space
instantly gets a shot of culture with oatmeal hued
grain sack pillows accented with preppy stripes. Her
new spring line promises many surprises!

Clogs
Does Swedish Hasbeens mean anything to you? It
should. This Scandinavian company is giving cool
accessories from the 70s an afterlife. Their stylish
clogs handcrafted from high quality natural wood
and leather is making me a believer. Their witchy
cool Peep Toe Super High sandals make your legs
look as perfect as an isosceles triangle’s. The
clogs come in cheery colors (red, yellow, orange)
that will give any girl a lift. www.clementines.com.

Cleat Skins
My son, Mad Max, tears up the
soccer field every time he has a
match. If post-game tales of goals
and assists aren’t the only thing
he’s bringing into the house (and
car and classroom), try Cleatskins
on for size. These stretchy covers
protect floors and carpets from
mud, muck, and grass. Just slip
them over plastic or rubber cleats
and hit the road. They come in
eighteen colors, including pink and
black camo, so jocks can match
their uniforms and show off a
favorite hue. Cleatskins can be
tossed in the washing machine to
clean. www.cleatskins.com.
Organic Wine - West Street Wine Bar
Okay, Reno needs another wine bar like you need another pair of
$200 skinny jeans. Meaning: there’s always room for one more!
And West Street Wine Bar stands-out in a crowd by pouring a
wide range of biodynamic, organic and sustainable wines. If you
spend your whole paycheck to eat pesticide and hormone free
food, why should you imbibe upward of 200 chemicals in your
glass of Syrah? West Street Wine Bar, 148 West Street, (775)

Tea
And here, in the pantry of wonders,
behold a cure-all elixir. Simply add hot

simmering cauldrons. With flavors and
ingredients sourced from around the
world, this brew mistress has designed
enchanting blends of loose leaf tea to
energize the lethargic, calm the hyper and
please the dissatisfied. Embrace the luscious taste of chocolate and roses, made
with beautiful dried petals. Summon bright
memories of childhood with a soothing blend
of lavender, citrus and Earl Grey. Bolder clients
might want to design their own blend. Available online at

CLEVER!
And the winner is...
Ashley Martinez
The winner of the CLEVER
Boudoir Photography shoot,
Ashley Martinez, arrived at
Cahoots Portraits' Studio
loaded down with an assortment of outfits for her photo
shoot. Ashley's make-up was
applied by make-up artist
Kathleen Audet, including a set of false
lashes that brought out the best in
Ashley's dark eyes. Over the next 90 minutes photographer Anne Carter-Hargrove
coached her through a series of poses.
Ashley will be receiving a "little black
book" full of her favorite images to help
her remember the day of her glamorous
boudoir shoot.
Boudoir photography is for any woman
who wants beautiful images of herself.
You do NOT have to look like a model to
look stunning. Boudoir portraits are all
about attitude, not about shape or size they're to help women of all types celebrate their beauty. All images receive
magazine quality retouching (the models
get it, so why not you?!)
Each woman is given a link to see her
proofs, and then her favorite images are
retouched - wrinkles and any bulges are
gently smoothed. The images are mounted
in a leather album, or slipped in individual
mats in a "bedroom box" so she can display
one at a time, depending on her mood. A
"little black book" of the images is also
available - great to tuck into a suitcase.
Each woman also receives a music video of
her images, as well as web-size versions to
use in e-mail or facebook.
