HEADS UP TO YOUR HEALTH photo by Jim Craigmyle Spring 2013 Headwaters Health Care Foundation Newsletter Finding Hope at Home After a long history of diabetes, Don Tipping was fighting the battle of his life. He found the hope to carry on close to home, at the hands of his caregivers at Headwaters Health Care Centre. It all began when Don developed a diabetic ulcer on his right foot, resulting in the partial removal of his heel. After a pneumonia-related hospital stay, Don discovered he had developed a small sore on one of his toes of the left foot. His home-care nurse led him to Dr. Wang and eventually Dr. Salih, General Surgeon, at Headwaters Health Care Centre. While that toe and another one adjacent to it could not be saved, it was Dr. Salih who discovered that Don had no blood flow to his left foot due to a blockage in the artery of his left leg. Dr. Salih immediately arranged for a specialist to perform vascular surgery. “If I had to wait two more days, I was told I would have lost my left leg up to my knee,” recalls Don. Instead, he underwent vascular surgery to restore the blood flow Headwaters Health Care Foundation Newsletter and preserve the lower leg, isolating the amputation to the front half of his left foot. Complications from the surgery kept him in a downtown hospital for a couple of weeks. When Don was well enough, he was transferred back to Headwaters Health Care Centre for nearly three months to recover from his surgery and receive wound care for his amputation. “It was hard because of the length of time I stayed in hospital – I couldn’t do anything,” recalls Don. “They gave me hope, lying there in bed. Some days I was depressed and my nurses, physiotherapist and personal support workers would brighten my day.” In particular, Don remembers HHCC’s award-winning wound care specialist, Heather Morrow, RN, and her colleague Annette Smith, RN, and his physical therapist, Jackie Ford. “They are phenomenal.” Together Heather and Annette assessed Don’s post-operative wounds and provided the best modality of treatment which has furthered the wound healing process. >>continues on page 2 Campaign Update On October 9, the Foundation launched the biggest fundraising campaign in our hospital’s 100 year history – $14 million over the next five years to expand existing services, buy key pieces of hospital equipment, and add new medical specialties such as orthopedic surgery to Headwaters Health Care Centre. What will this mean for health care in Dufferin-Caledon? More people from our community who are battling cancer will be able to receive cancer treatment locally. More people will be able to have day surgery and attend a greater range of outpatient clinics closer to home. More state-of-the-art hospital equipment will be available to help diagnose and treat patients who depend on Headwaters Health Care Centre, whenever they need it. I chose to be part of this important initiative because I believe it is our collective responsibility to ensure Headwaters Health Care Centre is positioned to provide the best medical care that it can to everyone in our community today, and for generations to come. A century ago, residents of Dufferin-Caledon helped fundraise for our community’s first hospital. By joining together as a community to support this campaign for Headwaters Health Care Centre, we can ensure our families and neighbours receive the best care possible, close to home. Thanks to our donors, in every department of Headwaters Health Care Centre, patients already receive the high-quality treatment they need using state-of-the-art equipment. Thank you. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Commitment to Care Campaign has raised $11 million to date. Please help us reach our $14 million goal by making a special Campaign donation today. As we look to the future, our hospital depends on your continued support to meet the increasing health care demands from the growing and aging population in the Dufferin-Caledon region. This is the catalyst for the Commitment to Care Campaign. Bob Burnside Chair, Commitment to Care Campaign Please donate to the Commitment to Care Campaign at hhcfoundation.com/give. To request more information or a hospital tour to see how your donation is improving lives, contact Headwaters Health Care Foundation at 519.941.2702, ext. 2285. I Give Because...The MacMaster Family It has been said that the choice we make about the life we live determines the kind of legacy we leave. The late Peter MacMaster’s legacy certainly reflects the depth and breadth of his commitment to philanthropy. A past owner/operator of MacMaster Pontiac Buick in Orangeville, Peter was always a generous supporter of charitable events for many years. His colleagues remember him as someone who strongly believed that being a good corporate citizen meant giving back. Sadly, Peter passed away suddenly at the age of 35 from a heart attack due to an undiagnosed heart defect, leaving behind his wife, Patricia, and their three young children, Alexandra, Ashley and Benjamin. “I always knew he was a generous man,” notes Patricia. However, in the wake of his passing in 2005, she recalls people she had never met before approaching her with kind words about the thoughtful donations they had received from Peter. “He gave to worthy charitable causes that even I didn’t know about,” she muses. Patricia has since established The Peter D. MacMaster Foundation, “to help keep the memory of my late husband alive,” she explains. In January with their mother, Alex, Ashley and Ben made a donation in support of the highest priority equipment needs at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville, where they continue to reside. “We’re very happy to be able to donate to Headwaters Health Care Foundation,” said Patricia. “Supporting our community hospital is very important to us, and the work the Foundation does for Headwaters Health Care Centre helps make it the top facility that it is—close to home.” “To me, it’s very important that our children understand why they are giving, where their donation goes and how their contribution is making a difference right here in their community,” remarks Patricia. The MacMaster children were given a tour of Headwaters Health Care Centre when they proudly presented their gift – something their mother says helps them better realize how the hospital uses financial donations to buy hospital equipment to care for patients every day. “It’s my hope,” said Patricia, “that by making donations from this private Foundation in Peter’s name will enable my children and me to carry on the wonderful spirit of giving that Peter so graciously demonstrated throughout his life.” >>Finding Hope at Home ~ continued from front page Jackie administered ultraviolet light treatment to his foot, and worked with him to practice walking with support and gain some independence with his personal care. Throughout his hospital stay, Don’s wife Michelle was by his side yet conveniently close to home. Every three weeks he makes a short trip to HHCC to meet with Heather Morrow for ongoing wound care for the next six to eight months. A long-term care facility may have been Don’s next move but instead he was approved for discharge on December 24 and spent Christmas in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family and friends. “I really like the people at Headwaters—they are much more personable than I’ve experienced elsewhere,” remarks Don as Michelle nods in agreement. “The care I’ve received at Headwaters has been fantastic—I couldn’t ask for better.” Today, Don smiles broadly at his newfound mobility in the motorized wheelchair he pilots with ease about his living room. His home care nurse, arranged through HHCC’s partnership with Community Care Access Centre, visits three days a week to tend to his wound dressings. Don Tipping is among the many patients who will benefit from the expanded outpatient clinics planned for Headwaters Health Care Centre and funded by the $14 million Commitment to Care campaign. Cathy and Margaret collect patients’ vitals, medical history and any prescription information and send this data to the specialists before each virtual consultation. “It’s a great benefit to me to visit with my neurologist through HHCC’s Telemedicine program. Having Parkinson’s, I appreciate not having to drive all the way to Markham for an appointment, especially when my energy level drops and my condition flares up. A big thumbs up on this wonderful service.” – Dorothy James, patient Behind the Scenes: Telemedicine Bringing Health Care Close to Home...Virtually pain management clinics, education sessions for patients/families, and even ongoing learning for the hospital’s medical professionals. In 2001, the Telemedicine Studio at HHCC was outfitted with a 50x magnification AMD camera, two giant video monitors and a wireless virtual stethoscope. There’s even a virtual Intensive Care Unit system that can be quickly transported to a patient’s bedside and linked to specialists if needed. How It Works In many instances, Cathy and Margaret work as the consulting specialists’ extended team for a variety of clinical patient cases: • Infants with cleft palate repairs are often brought to HHCC’s • Patients afflicted with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases regularly attend virtual clinics with leading Markham-based neurologists, Dr. Guttman and Dr. Adams. These specialists regularly assess the progression of patients’ tremors and ticks as well as stability for those who walk and adjust their medicines as needed. • Chronic pain sufferers including those with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis attend weekly mindfulness meditation groups conducted by Dr. Jackie GardnerNix, to help them better cope with their condition. • Post-operative cardiac patients who’ve recently had angiograms, open heart surgery and 4 Message from the Foundation Chair angioplasty receive an introduction to their upcoming cardiac rehab program from a therapist at South Lake Regional Hospital. Paterson photo by Pete The Telemedicine Studios at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville and the new Mel Lloyd Health and Care Centre in Shelburne are improving lives for many patients in the Dufferin-Caledon area by virtually linking them to top specialists and educators at Ontario’s regional hospitals. Threeway connections routinely link, for example, dialysis patients at the Shelburne site with health care providers at HHCC and another hospital site. It isn’t every day we get to celebrate a 100th Anniversary and launch the largest fundraising campaign in our hospital’s history but that’s exactly what we did in the fall of 2012. From October 9 to 13, we invited members of our wonderful community to celebrate a century of care and join us in supporting our 5-year $14 million Commitment to Care Campaign to fund our hospital’s future growth and redevelopment. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Headwaters Health Care Foundation has raised $11 million toward our $14 million goal. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Campaign to date. We are tremendously grateful for your support. With $3 million to go before we reach our Campaign goal, there is still much work to do. This spring and summer, we look forward to two very special events we are organizing in support of the Commitment to Care Campaign. The first is our Annual Dinner & Auction on Saturday, April 27, 2013 – themed “Celebrate!”. “We also serve as patient advocates by answering any questions the patient or a family member has after the appointment,” adds Cathy Trudeau, RN. It will certainly be a birthday party like no other, with a special guest performance by award- “The Telemedicine Studio offers greater access to medical services close to home,” says Margaret Serre, RN. “The service also helps to reduce wait times in our Ambulatory Care Unit by offering another way to deliver outpatient clinics and programs for some of our patients.” Devil’s Pulpit Golf Club in Caledon, Ontario. It will be an exceptional day in support of “Many people are surprised at how many health care services are offered through Telemedicine,” says Cathy Trudeau. She notes that patients and families can check the Ontario Telemedicine Network online at www.otn. ca for a full listing of telemedicine based programs available. “Or simply ask your family doctor if a part of your care can be done via telemedicine in your community,” adds Cathy. Sincerely, Virtual Connections to Specialists winning comedian Steve Patterson from the CBC’s The Debaters. The second is our 100th Anniversary Golf Classic on Monday, July 8, 2013, at the exclusive exceptional health care at Headwaters Health Care Centre. I hope you will join us. Your support through participation at these events and/or through direct donations to the Foundation will help us reach our $14 million Commitment to Care Campaign goal. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, thank you to our donors and volunteers for your ongoing support.
