Monday June 16 - Benoak Devon Cattle Stud
10th Ausmectin Northern Beef Week Open Day/Sale 2014 Monday June 16th Inspection from 9AM – 5PM Private sale from 10am to 10:30am Offering 6 Bulls & 35 Heifers: 5 “H” Rising 2 YO Devon Bulls (2 Poll) 1 “J” Yearling Devon Bull 30 -35 Rising 2 YO Commercial Devon hfrs (Unjoined) (Female catalogue available at Open Day) Welcome To “Oaklands” Home of Benoak Devons If ever there was a twelve months to remind us all what weather the Australian climate can throw around this has been it, & by all long term weather predictions it’s certainly not over yet. The amount of sheep & particularly cattle that had to be unloaded off property’s as all water reserves were depleted was staggering. I heard one story of a producer ringing a major abattoir to let them know there was four BDoubles of cows about to arrive at their abattoir, the abattoir informed him that they weren’t booked in & his reply “I’ve completely ran out of water yesterday & if they don’t die at your abattoir they’ll all perish in three days here”. The amount of quality, young beef breeding females that would have simply gone to the abattoirs as a last option is staggering. It’s a sobering reminder of how volatile this game is & how sometimes you have to make some very big decisions. The good news is that once the seasons get back on track again livestock will be a highly sought after commodity. Processors have all said that as quick as they can kill the huge numbers they have no trouble selling the meat to the world & that is probably the biggest positive out of all of this, that the world market can’t get enough Aussie beef!! I’ve read some articles about how the US is starting to recover from the huge drought they had not long ago & young beef heifers (commercial) are making up to $2000 /head whilst the country is trying to get their numbers back up. If we can get through this pinch we should be right!!!! Our cattle have come through with no supplementary feeding or lick (so far), testimony to their “doing” ability & the cows have brought in some outstanding weaners. The sale bulls haven’t had the preparation of other years as good grass was nowhere to be seen but I’m happy with how they will present given the circumstances. If ever there was a year to select cattle with robust constitution there is none better I’m not to proud to say that cows that couldn’t handle the heat in the kitchen went direct to Bindaree abattoirs. Our clients demand easy doing cattle & it’s years like this that really bring the cream of our breeders to the top. It’s these bloodlines that get magnified throughout our herd & also the ones I ramble on about when they produce young bulls for our sale. An indication of Benoaks easy doing attributes was in December 2013 we sold 30 CFA cows through the Glen Innes saleyards as the 6 -8 week waiting list for the major abattoirs was to far away. They went exceptionally well & made $1.57/kg & returned $919 each. They topped the female section on the day & I haven’t heard of cows making that much per kilo since, not bad for old cows in the middle of a roaring drought. Above all this Benoak Devons are fertile, even in years like this & when it’s all said & done there is no greater driver of profitability than fertility in a self replacing beef herd, it’s been proven time & time again. That’s why when you buy Benoak blood you are buying proven genetics that have been meeting the markets for over 60 years. Figure 1 CFA Cows sold Glen Innes Saleyards $1.57/kg December 2013 $919Avg SALE INFORMATION HEALTH Bulls will be presented in strong healthy condition, vaccinated for Pestivirus, 7 in 1 (lepto) & Vibrio,(boosters due April/May 2015) Ear notch tested to be Pestivirus free. Paul & Loma saw the bull on the mini tour the UK Devon society held in 2010. They commented that he was a big free moving bull with great thickness. His eldest progeny on Oaklands are two & half years old & I’m pleased to say I’m happy with their attributes, particularly their doing ability & ruby red coats. They appear to be cattle that finish when we want them too, not when they want to, a trait we constantly strive for. Lot 5 Comments: Dan C137 purchased at the Inland Devon sale 2010. I noticed him the minute we stepped out of the car. A very proud bull with tremendous muscle , thickness & length. A lighter coat than most Devons we used him over our commercial herd initially, but once his progeny came into the system we started using him over stud cows. His progeny may not be the “Prettiest” but they are great contributors to the bank account. He also has above average IMF (marbling) Born: 3/03/2006 VIX BOTHAM B12 Ident: VIXB12 Registered Horned -- Longacres DESERT STORM -- Longacres M.E 9607 -- Longacres PLUM 44 Palinga YARDARM Y46 -- PALINGA YACHT -- Palinga PLUM L26 -- Wombramurra PLUM Y13 -- Longacres DESERT STORM -- Longacres M.E 9607 -- Longacres PLUM 44 Palinga EMMA Y48 -- WOMBRAMURRA WARLOCK L288 -- Palinga EMMA R104 -- Palinga EMMA N7 Figure 3 Botham B12 January 2014 8 years old Comments: Purchased in 2008 at the Inland Devon Breeders sale for $11750. All blood that performs!!! His first drop of calves were out of “F” heifers with no trouble at calving & are all great doing cattle. Particularly pleasing is they are a good style of cattle with high yielding carcasses. A bull that has plenty to offer. Briar 8 a big roomy cow with excellent doing ability. Graeme Barnes had a lot of respect for his sire Lexington 16. Offered at our 2012 open day & sold to David & Leith Towns, Nymboida. Born: 2/09/1976 BENOAK GREG Ident: Greg Not Registered Poll STRINGY BARK PAUL(registration?) BENOAK LOMA On the 27th October 2013 Joanne & I welcomed Rosemary Grace Wright. Comments: Greg has produced 6 progeny all out of the one Dam. They appear to be below average for growth with some temperament issues (will fire up when cornered!!) Paul & Loma had no choice but use him as he was the only Male they produced. Many would argue that there is not enough natural thickness & eats far too much for kilos gained. No plans for future progeny. (No comments from Trevor Cleaver needed.) 2014 Sale Bulls Born: 26/05/2012 1 Benoak STRAUSS H12 Ident: OAKH12 Registered Horned -- Longacres M.E 9607 -- Palinga YARDARM Y46 -- Palinga PLUM L26 VIX BOTHAM B12 -- Longacres M.E 9607 -- Palinga EMMA Y48 -- Palinga EMMA R104 -- BARNESTAPLE MARRIOT AA (SFA) -- BARNSTAPLE KISMET 93 -- HILWAH JENNY 3RD BENOAK CINDERELLA C13 -- BARNESTAPLE KISMET 22 -- BENOAK CINDERELLA V10 -- BENOAK CINDERELLA N6 Notes: A big stretchy Botham son that will grow out into a very productive bull. I thought enough of him to use him over 15 stud “F” heifers in our 2013 joining, calves to hit the ground mid August. Cinderella C13 won her fair share in the judjing ring & at Sydney 2010 was judged Champion Devon Female. She’s a large roomy cow that weighed 840kg going into winter 2013. 2 Benoak BRUCE ALLMIGHTY H14 (Poll) Born: 12/08/2012 Ident: OAKH14 Registered Poll -- Thorndale Fitzroy 3rd (SL) -- Thorndale Assirati EX92 (SL) -- Thorndale Flirt 8th (F2) (SL) Stonegrove HIGH'N'MIGHTY(P)(SL) -- Minety Broads Trespasser 4th -- Stonegrove Fancie -- Dingle Fancie 177th -- BARNESTAPLE MARRIOT AA (SFA) -- BARNSTAPLE KISMET 93 -- HILWAH JENNY 3RD BENOAK HALO C14 -- BARNESTAPLE KISMET 22 -- BENOAK HALO V12 -- BENOAK HALO N7 Notes: Bruce allmighty H14 is our English A.I sired bull this year who has filled out into a very handy young poll bull.
