The Force is strong with this one! A day out at Chilton Gala we had…. Interesting visitors we saw.… This one proving that our Triumph Trophy bikes can be ridden by the smallest of volunteers! We managed to snap several unusual photos before we returned the bike to the dark side. (Or Netherby Ambulance Station, as call it you may…) “Just a few Bikes riding around at night time?” On the pages this month (and listed below) you’ll get an idea of just how much work our volunteers undertake each and every month to make sure there’s petrol in the fuel tanks, insurance, uniforms etc. Please consider joining us at one of our events to keep this fantastic momentum going… We really do rely on these fundraisers for the very survival of our charity. Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 End of the school year: a busy time for blood bikes! As the summer holidays were about to begin, Northumbria Blood Bikes were in demand at many schools in the region. Some were holding end-of year fetes or family days, others were looking for something lively to finish off the years classes with lessons that the children would not easily forget. First in line was Biddick Summer Fair, Biddick Primary School in Washington. Saturday 11th July was their event day, And Owain & Sue Harris attended with an impressive outdoor display (left). This was quickly followed by another end of term fair day at Oxclose Community School in Washington, on Wednesday 15th July. Sadly no pictures from this one, but a big “Thank You” to Alan Johnson and John Kerr who stayed at the event until it closed at 3pm. The very next morning (Thursday 16th July) we were at St Joseph's Catholic Academy in Hebburn for their "Industry Day". We spent the day talking to different classes about the variety of roles and skills needed to keep Northumbria Blood Bikes working. We received some very positive feedback from the school staff and were also asked if we could engage with their classes again after the summer holidays. Many thanks to our volunteer John Kerr (pictured right), whose enthusiasm kept the pupils focused and attentive all day. ..and thanks also to St.Josephs for buying us our lunch! The next day was the last day of term for most, and we attended the Delves Lane School as they held their summer fair. It’s worth reminding our readers that a lot of our funding can originate from the parents of schoolchildren whose classes we have attended, and the schools themselves often get involved in non-uniform days or sponsorship events to raise money for us. We’re always happy to attend a school, either as an enhancement to an open day or fair, or in a more traditional class environment where we teach about our group in line with a current curriculum or themed subject. So, the next time you attend a parents evening or a school play, please mention us to the teachers…they are usually keen to introduce some diversity into the classroom! We will gladly chat with them to explain what we can provide, or refer them to some of the schools we’ve already visited. It all helps to give us that vital publicity! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Over 150 fire stations join the 30,000th Last Post tribute: More than 150 fire stations and other organisations worldwide took part in events on July 9th marking the 30,000th sounding of the Last Post in Ypres. The anniversary tribute was streamed live from the Menin Gate where the buglers, traditionally drawn from Ypres' volunteer fire brigade, salute the fallen of the First World War every night at 7pm (BST). ‘The Tribute' at Spennymoor fire station. Photos: Owain Harris. Fire services across the world were invited to take part in the 'Tribute to the Tribute' by holding their own commemorations at the same time. Events in our region took place in fire stations at Bishop Auckland, Conssssss Auckland, Consett, Darlington, Durham, Peterlee and Spennymoor, where one of our blood bikes is stationed. A week earlier, the new chief at Spennymoor fire station said that he'd never heard of Northumbria Blood Bikes until he started his new post, and asked if we would be able to attend the event…all he wanted was a bike or two with uniformed riders and maybe a car if we could. It was short notice, but as always, the blood bike volunteers pulled together and worked a little magic… We arrived with no less than five marked bikes (one of them missing from the picture on the left) and the Skoda Yeti, one of those rare occasions where such a large part of the fleet are together in the same place. The fleet lined up inside the courtyard, while the main Garage area was cleared of vehicles to allow visitors to watch the live event indoors…. As it happens the weather was pleasant, but considering the thunder storms we’d all seen a few days earlier, it was a wise move. Thank you as always to the many volunteers who attended the service Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products on our behalf and represented NBB. Registered Charity Number 1152745 SUNDERLAND AIRSHOW Northumbria Blood Bikes’ first appearance at this annual event! Thanks to some mammoth organisation we were able to have a stand in the busiest part of the ground display on all three days of this years’ show….and relied on many, many volunteers to help us to keep the stand staffed all the way through! Thanks to Kirsty Downham, Peter Robertson, Alan Johnson, Barry Bullas, Torben Stockmar (and his missus!), and the many others whose names I may have missed that helped to make our first airshow attendance such a success. There were plenty of people interested in hearing about our service, and for a pleasant change there were many who knew all about us! –Perhaps because the event was held in such a central part of our territory. This also meant that many of our off-duty members and their families were able to pop in and say hello over effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products the 3 daysProviding that we were there. Registered Charity Number 1152745 On Saturday 18th July, Northumbria Blood Bikes volunteers Nigel Barlow and Steve Rawlings attended the North East Rugby League Grand Finals , where our friends from Cramlington Rockets RLFC were playing. A friendship between Cramlington Rockets and the Blood Bikes is due to both organisations having being awarded £25,000 from the Aviva Community Fund. The work the Blood Bikes do is so essential and saves so many lives every year. Nigel took one of our Yamaha FJR 1300 liveried bikes to the club for the morning (pictured above), and the Rockets also ran a lovely feature in their club newsletter. Thanks, guys, it was a great day! Therefore we are thrilled that they are bringing a bike down and I hope everyone takes the time to hear what this fantastic charity does for so many in the North East.” “Mission Implausible”… 25th July: NBB Chairman Peter Robertson and volunteer John Vasey met up with three mad guys from Norfolk riding machines to Inverness which were all powered with sub 100cc engines! They were travelling to raise money for cancer charities and were passing through our region. The meeting was initiated by volunteer John Vasey, who joined them at the A68 on his ZZR1100, closely followed up by Peter on a blood bike. At Corbridge John and Peter waved them on their way and they headed for the border. After riding 1096 miles in 42.5hrs, a 20 something strong crowd turned out in the rain to see them return home. They had raised over £2000.00 for Cancer charities, and the money is still coming in. Well done, guys! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 For the third year running we had a presence at this popular motorcycling event, each year with a bigger and better display. This time we were positioned right alongside the Great North Air Ambulance stand….. an ideal position to promote and publicise the Blood on Board service! The event is a must for anyone interested in motorcycles, and as a result it’s probably one of the best locations from which we can recruit new riders and volunteers. This years’ event was no exception, with at least fourteen new membership enquiries on the day…… Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Thanks as always to the many volunteers who helped to support our excellent publicity stand (pictured right). These included Tony Martin, Andy Watson, Alan Johnston, Debbie Todd, Anthony Simm, Grace Hodges, Ian Hunter, and countless more…. Apologies if your name has been missed! Below left: A rare sight; both Madathlon Trophy bikes (“Claire” and “Bella”) side by side at Bikewise. Below Right: Northumbria Blood Bikes volunteer Kirsty Downham bumped into the legendary John McGuinness (Isle of Man TT racing) at the Triumph stand, and took the opportunity to get this photo! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 More news in brief: On 8th July, just a few hours after the last newsletter was published, we were told that we won the £200 “Chosen By You” vote for May and June at Asda Gosforth. Thanks to all of the customers who put their little green coin in our box. That's another few weeks of fuel for a bike covered! We delivered a talk to Durham UK Lions last year, and they have been extremely gracious to make a donation again this month. They donated £300.00 to Northumbria Blood Bikes , in recognition of the invaluable work that we do with the Great North Air Ambulance Service, and the on-going “Blood on Board” project that we deliver to them. On 10th August, Fundraising Guru Graham Moor collected a cheque from Houghton Round Table for £3000.00! A huge “Thank you” to all at Houghton Round Table; we’ll make sure the donation is used wisely to continue our life-saving service. Thanks to an application by Northumbria Blood Bikes volunteer RIchard Penna, we have been granted £200 for running costs from the Greggs foundation. Many thanks to Richard, whose efforts resulted in this donation, and of course to all at Greggs for their kind contribution! There must be a John Parish hiding in the wings somewhere? – Another lovely donation from our regular contributors at Washington Slimming World…. Another full collecting tin with £35.78 from these delightful ladies (and the legendary Mr.P. too, no doubt!). We love your support for us… Thank you! Crawcrook Summer Fair Saturday 1st August: Thanks to NBB volunteers Nigel Barlow Gary Annan, and (I suspect!) one or two others whose names weren’t on the register; for representing us at Crawcrook Fair on a perfect sunny Saturday afternoon. We raised over £100.00! Durham Miners Gala Saturday 11th July: We attended the popular event with a perfect pitch right next to the Great North Air Ambulance gazebo! It was a great opportunity to talk to the fundraisers from GNAAS and share ideas. Thanks to all who helped to staff our awareness stand and made the event such a great success! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 BIG LOTTERY FUND AWARD: £10,000.00! “Awards For All” grant given to Northumbria Blood Bikes ...Believe it or not, this is something we’ve known about for some considerable time, but could not make public because of reporting restrictions imposed by the Big Lottery Fund. However, these were lifted on 11th August, the day that this newsletter was released and also the day that the National Lottery made an announcement to the press about our grant. So, we can proudly report that we have been given £10,000.00 to buy a motorbike for our work with the Great North Air Ambulance Service. The windfall comes thanks to the efforts of our Fundraising Co-ordinator, Graham Moor, who made an application many months ago; one of many funding applications he submits throughout the year in the hope that one or two might be successful. Once we have bought a bike and entered it into service, we will also need to complete a report, telling us what difference the project has made and how the funding has benefitted both ourselves and the community we serve. This is an important term and condition of our grant and it may affect future applications to us if we don't complete it. This is an outstanding example of one of the many tasks Graham performs that rarely gets the attention it deserves; we only notice he’s done it on those rare occasions that they’re successful! Thanks again, Graham, for your ongoing efforts to gain funding awards from the many groups and organisations that you apply to. With this award, and the Aviva award last month, we’ve become £35000.00 richer in the space of just a few weeks! Durham Rose Croix 26th July: Our fundraising manager Graham Moor (left, in black) was presented with a cheque for a wonderful £1,000 from the Durham Rose Croix. NBB volunteer Paul Paterson (left, in uniform) who is also part of the Durham Rose Croix, was on hand to present the cheque. Thanks so much for this kind contribution - it means so much and will keep the fleet moving for weeks to come. They were also kind enough to feature this photo on their website! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Chilton Family Fun Day Saturday 25th July Northumbria Blood Bikes attended the Chilton Family Fun Day at the beautifully newly restored Miners Welfare Recreation Ground in Chilton. The Mayor, Cllr Elizabeth Bruce (pictured below with Graham Moor), had elected Northumbria Blood Bikes as her Mayoral Charity of Choice for the last year. At the unveiling of the building, Cllr Bruce presented us with a cheque for a wonderful £1,400, which will be used to fuel the fleet for weeks. Thanks so much to Cllr Bruce for her hard work in raising this money, and for the work of everybody in restoring the Miners Welfare. Thank you also to our NBB volunteers Len Potts and Gavin Russell were there to lend a hand in a photo for the Northern Echo (above), and to welcome visitors to our publicity & awareness stand. Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 A heart-warming story from our blood bike colleagues in the South: Blood Bikers not only help others in need, but more recently two Blood Bikers previously unknown to one another and from different Blood Bike groups came together through unique circumstances. Howard Jones is a Blood Bike Rider for Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes with his day to day job being as a Guide Dog Instructor. His job of teaching and training Guide Dogs and visually impaired clients is something Howard has done for 25 years, changing the lives of many hundreds of visually impaired people. However, Howard's most recently trained Guide dog, Uska, suited a particular client from Burton Upon Trent. Butch Freeman, the only Controller for Derbyshire Blood Bikes who is registered blind, has been waiting for a Guide Dog for almost a year. Uska was an ideal match for Butch and they've now successfully qualified and are getting around Staffordshire independently. Butch commented, "Uska has given me back my independence and a brand new lease for life”. Howard commented, “It’s a great job, being able to see the difference a dog can make to someone’s life - and I’m sure it won’t be long before Uska becomes the newest member of the Derbyshire Blood Bike Group” Story & photo: Howard Jones, Shropshire & Staffordshire Blood Bikes …And some lovely feedback for us! “ 6th August, 2015 To: Blood Bike Volunteers: Northumbria and Teeside I would be most grateful if you could pass on our thanks and gratitude to all the volunteers supporting the newly established transfer of clinical files between Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust and James Cook University Hospital. The Northern Genetics Service, part of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS, provides genetics services from two main bases; the international Centre for Life and James Cook University Hospital. The increase in demand for Genetic services has increased the number of patients attending our clinics and we have seen a steady increase in the number of clinical files that need to be transported between the two main bases. Transport had become a major logistic problem for the Northern Genetics service. Your corporation is establishing a mechanism to transfer files between our two main bases each evening Monday to Thursday. This is making a considerable difference to our staff and patients. Thank you again for supporting our service in this way and ultimately the people in the North East and Cumbria who access Genetics Services via the Northern Genetics Service. Dr. Paul Brennan, Consultant Clinical Geneticist Clinical Director, Northern Genetics Service. Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 ” Philippa Bromley and Graham Moor were guests of the Rotary Club of Washington Forge meeting at the Dun Cow, Bournmoor (13th July) to tell them about the important work of our organisation. Pictured here are Philippa and Graham with President Dave Neville and Past President Bob Twist. They brought our Honda ST1300 “Auckland” into the pub to let the club members try it for size… Perhaps some new riders for us ??? Tue 14th July: Northumbria Blood Bikes were invited to a meeting of the Rotary Club and talk about the group, and the highs & lows of providing such an essential service. Our Vice Chairman Alan Ross talked for over an hour at Finbarrs Restaurant, Durham, and took along our FJR1300 “Lindisfarne” for them to see. Alan is pictured right with Rotarian John Wilkinson. Friday 31st July: Graham Moor and Phillipa Bromley attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Newcastle upon Tyne at the Copthorne Hotel on Newcastle’s Quayside. It was a warm, sunny evening on the Quayside, and the river made a perfect backdrop for a photo with Lindisfarne, one of our two Yamaha FJR1300 motorbikes. Two Rotarians tried the bikes for size, Samantha Morgie (above left) and Rosemary Hayward (above right), and all of the members all enjoyed hearing about the work we do. The fact that we did talks at three different rotary club meetings in one month resulted in us dedicating a full page to them! We’re always happy to take advantage of opportunities like these… to spread the word about our work and hopefully inspire some of the attendees to look at fundraising initiatives for us. If you are a member of a club and would like us to talk, please email [email protected] Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 We’re asking for your help again! For the remainder of August, right the way through ‘till the end of October, we’re asking you to help us out if you’re in Eldon Square. For these three months we are competing with two other charities in the John Lewis Community Matters “green token scheme”, from which we should get a share of £3,000. The more tokens we have, the larger a percentage of the fund will be awarded to us. We’re therefore asking that you choose the John Lewis store for your meeting place / coffeebreak, hoping you'll go to the cafe there and put your token in our 'bin'. Community Matters is the John Lewis charitable giving scheme that runs throughout their shops… You'll also come across a similar scheme at your local Waitrose. Every 3 months, each shop selects 3 community groups to help. Customers will then be directly involved in deciding how much each nominated group receives, by using a token to vote for the organisation they'd like to support. Each shop will have £3000 to donate which will be split between the charities according to the proportion of the vote they've received from customers. This means that if a charity receives 31% of the votes, it'll receive a £910 donation. tried areas their hand at Eldon Square store. Families had Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products the opportunity to send their kids up on one Registered Charity Number 1152745 of the stations aerial ladder platforms to see ` Tesco Charity Trust very kindly offers a 20% top-up for colleagues who engage in fundraising for charities. Back in February, our NBB volunteers Clair Gray & Kirsty Lawrence organised a charity night at the Derwent Manor to raise money for Bright Red & Northumbria Blood Bikes. Next year Clair will be climbing the 3 peaks of Morocco for Bright Red & this year Kirsty roped Clair into joining her to do the Great North Run for Northumbria Blood Bikes. Left to Right: Clair Gray (Tesco), Ashley Elliott (Bright Red), Andy Watson (Northumbria Blood Bikes), and Kirsty Lawrence (Tesco) On 29thJuly, representatives from the two charities attended the Tesco Extra Store in Consett for the presentation of the top-up cheques. Tesco colleague Haley Redshaw was kind enough to take the above photograph. Don’t forget that they have decided to do it all over again in October, raising funds for the same two charities, “Bright Red” and ourselves. A £20 ticket gets you a fabulous 3-course meal, and six hours of entertainment, from Ellie Rae (Below) and a resident DJ. There are still some tickets remaining for this event. We will have a blood bike on display in the function room as we did last time, and hopefully plenty of our members attending! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Vice-Chairman Alan Ross was on his way to Car Styling Signs to get some livery for his car in preparation for the “Ride To The Wall” event this October… and found this car (left) parked outside! It was an unexpected surprise, but great to see our charity being supported with such a public display of our logos! Car Styling Signs are based in Swan Industrial Estate, Washington, and have provided signage for us in the past… For our BBC Children In Need events last year, Alan’s car was decorated by these guys; and they’re also working on a nice little surprise for two of our Great North Runners this year! Thank you, Brian, and all the staff at Car Styling Signs, for your magnificent support! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Chilton Gala: Saturday 1st August Fairground rides, Classic car display, a petting zoo, miniature railway, candy floss and sweet stalls, Hog Roast, and of course Northumbria Blood Bikes! A big “Thank You” to Len Potts and Keith Corrigan who staffed our stand at the Chilton Gala on 1 st August… our second event within ten days at Chilton (We also did the Family Fun Day one week earlier! During the day, Alan Ross also attended to fit a noisy siren onto the mini-moto so that the youngest kids had some buttons to play with. After all, blues on the big bike, but no buttons on the mini-moto for the kids to press? It just wasn’t fair! - Noisy day for our volunteers, then! The event was organised by Northern Bygones; a Classic and Vintage Car club that organizes regular club meetings and shows. They had an impressive display of cars which included the “Starsky & Hutch” Gran Torino (Right, for those of you old enough to remember Starsky & Hutch!) Various characters from “Star Wars” were also attending the event and trying our bike for size, including Yoda, who made it onto the front cover of this months’ newsletter. It was a great day; we had quite a few donations into our buckets, and the weather stayed sunny and dry for the duration. Hopefully there will be plenty of opportunities to re-visit this event and some of the others organised by Northern Bygones: We regularly see some of their members at events like the MG show (Corbridge) and the Morpeth fair, where we’ve joined them in the past in a parade of their vehicles through the town centre! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 Newcastle and Gateshead were fortunate enough to be the host cities for the British Transplant Games this year. The Games are an annual event held by the charity, Transplant Sport, with the aim of demonstrating the benefits of transplantation and increasing public awareness of the need for joining the NHS Organ Donation Register. Pictured with the Blood Bike are the “Yellow Perils”, the voluntary physio team for the Games. Meeting up with the neighbours: Sunday 2nd August: Northumbria Blood Bikes spent most of the day at the Hartside Top Café, near Alston, as an opportunity for our riders to meet colleagues from Cumbria Blood Bikes, with whom we work so closely on the Air Ambulance “BOB” runs. The weather improved (thankfully) after this photo was taken… Going the extra mile… If anyone ever needed evidence of a Blood Bike volunteers’ willingness to help out, here it is! This week, whilst on duty and on his way home, Steve Rawlings (pictured) noticed a lost elderly gentleman with a zimmer-frame walking down a main road near where he lives. The man was confused, but Steve managed to get the man to tell him his address and informed the police. Whilst waiting for the police to arrive, Steve parked up the Blood Bike and walked the man home, saw him safely into his living room and made sure he was okay. Steve just arrived back at the bike as the police pulled up, thanked him for his assistance and said they would call and check up on the man at home. Well done, Steve. All in a day’s work for a Blood Biker! Providing effective and timely transportation of essential blood and medical products Registered Charity Number 1152745 More than 7,000 visitors travelled from all over the North of England on Sat/Sun 8th & 9th August at Gosforth Park Racecourse as the family fun weekend got underway. On Modified Saturday, there were hundreds of slick Japanese racers, German hatch backs, super cars, sports cars, hot rods and heavily modified street cars on display. Visitors got the chance to see Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Audis, BMWs, ‘superslammed’ VWs and American hot rods. On Sunday, there was a classic theme when the best vintage vehicles will turn out in force.
