ISCHS Volunteer News 2015
Welcome to our latest edition of Volunteer News
We are half way through the year already and have just launched our 2015-2018 Strategic Plan. You
will find our Strategic Goals set out below. It was wonderful to see many of you at the All Staff meeting
as well as the Volunteer Function during National Volunteer Week back in May. It is remarkable that
there have been nearly 100 active volunteers within ISCH over the past year giving nearly 5000 hours to
our organisation. Well done to all of you, your ongoing work gives so much to our
organisation - not only your time and skills, but also your contribution to the positive
and inclusive culture of ISCH. I forward to seeing you around the sites.
HAPPY VOLUNTEERING!
Fiona Noble, Community Engagement Officer
Volunteer Hours
Please make sure you advise the Community Engagement Officer of your
hours at the end of each month via email, post or phone.
Its important we record the valuable hours you are putting into the
organisation for our evaluation and reporting to the Health Department.
Log sheets are based at each site, Wominjeka BBQ & Our Rainbow Place for
you to record. Otherwise please contact Fiona Noble for a log sheet to record
your hours, client contact hours and number of sessions: 9525 1300,
[email protected].
During the 2014– 2015 period ISCH had 92 active volunteers who gave 4957 volunteer hours,
worked with 3968 clients over 1618 sessions. An amazing result– well done!
“I volunteer because it keeps me active and connected to my local community” Matthew

ISCH Launched its 2015-2018 Strategic Plan in July 2015
At the All Staff meeting July 8th 2015 the 2015-2018 Strategic Plan was launched. To

collect your Strategic Plan 2015-2018 booklet from ISCH reception.
ISCH four main goals:
1.
ISCH understands and delivers the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes for our clients and
communities by providing services that are client-directed, outcomes-focused and cost effective.
2.
ISCH works with clients and communities to influence policy makers and address the structural
reasons for health inequity.
3.
ISCH is well resources and has the capacity to be adaptive, responsive and sustainable into the
future, in order to meet changing community and client needs and expectations.
4.
ISCH is a universal service accessible to all and open to growth, but maintains a focus on reaching
out to those most in need.

Volunteer Profile
Volunteer Name: Steve
What was your motivation to become a
volunteer?
I like meeting great people and was told about
Our Rainbow Place by Rosanna (ex Staff
member), so came along & have been assisting
ever since.
How long have you been volunteering at
ISCH and in what roles? I have been
volunteering since early 2000 or 2005 officially
(so long ago he can’t really remember!)
I volunteer with the Indigenous Access Team—
every week at the Wominjeka BBQ, fortnightly at
Our Rainbow Place and whenever camps, events
& festivals are on.
I also volunteer with ISCH mail outs and the
Health Promotion Team on the SHIP program.
(Steve is also on the SHIP social connections
committee).
What has been your best and/or worse
volunteer experience while at ISCH?
There have been many experiences over the
years, I remember Camp Jungai back in 2005 was
very memorable. I liked it because everyone was
together having a good time.
My worse experience was there too. A few years
ago due to a community member snoring so loudly
I had to move outside to get some sleep!
Camp Conran events have been another great
experience as well as making garlic bread for
everyone!
What do you enjoy the most about
volunteering with us? I like the people you meet
and then spending time with them at other events.
I’m very passionate about the Indigenous
community and supporting where I can.

Wominjeka BBQ)
What do you enjoying doing outside of your
volunteering? I enjoy listening to music, attending
music gigs and festivals, camping and art.
(Steve’s garlic bread must be added to this list– he
makes it for any event happening around Victoria).
As other volunteers would say “Steve is always
volunteering.” He always helps people set up &
pack away at festivals and camps. Steve just likes
giving people a helping hand.
Steve is a long time and very valued volunteer at
ISCH.
Congratulations on officially reaching your 10
year milestone with us Steve.

News from around the South
National Volunteer Week
During National Volunteer week the Port Phillip Volunteer Expo was held at St Kilda Town Hall, which our
wonderful volunteers Amanda and Matthew (photo on the cover page) both attended. They spoke at the
event and answered questions from potential volunteers in the Port Phillip area. A job well done.
Our Inner South Volunteer Function was held at Albert Park Lake. It was an extremely cold day so it was
nice to see a wonderful attendance. Damian Ferrie handed out certificates of appreciation and everyone
enjoyed a catch up, food and trivia.
The next volunteer event will be held end of November/
early December and will be a sit down meal at a local
venue. We might try and fit more trivia in too.
Stay tuned for more information.
“I volunteer because I like to be part of an organisation I respect and that has served me well over the
past 20 years” Claire
NAIDOC Week 2015 was held 5-12 July
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance
Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the
1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status
and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander history, culture and achievements and is an
opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous
Australians make to our country and our society.
On July 6th, NAIDOC Week Flag raising, featuring
welcome to country, smoking ceremony and
community lunch was held at St Kilda Town Hall.
ISCH Coordinator Mark Williams & son Marbee
“ I volunteer because I really enjoy feeling as though I have a purpose and am contributing to my local
community. I am always trying to learn and gain further experience and I find volunteering with ISCH
achieves this” Amie

Can you tweak your fast food?
Trim your takeaway to make it healthier with these suggestions:

Ask for extra salad in your hamburger and skip the bacon, fried onion
and stick to one meat pattie

Go for small portions of gourmet style pizzas, topped with vegetables,
lean meat or seafood and opt for a thin crust

Try a jacket potato with creamed corn, baked beans or salad toppings

Choose wholegrain sandwiches with lean meat, chicken or egg, and
lots of salad

Opt for grilled fish with vegetables, or a grilled fish burger with salad

Try pasta with a tomato-based sauce (instead of cream-based)

Order skin-free chicken or remove it before eating

Choose vegetables or salad and water with a meal deal, rather than
chips and soft drink

Go for a vegetable-based soup as a winter-warmer
