Board President

“Thank you for your loyalty and continued support
of our Sacramento Zoo. I promise that we, the
Trustees, will continue to do our best to carry on
the trust you have given us.”
Greetings to all the members of our Zoo family! I have just completed my first year as
President of the Board of Trustees. You may have noticed the name change from Board
of Directors to Board of Trustees. I asked for this change because it places an important
emphasis on who we are: trustees who are entrusted with the care and well-being of

attendance, the addition of many engaging zoo babies, and the progress of fundraising
for the new Small Wonders of Africa habitat. In 2014, we look forward to the completion
of this important project, as well as a number of additional changes to the Zoo – all the
while keeping the small, family-friendly feeling that we all cherish.
One of the great successes of
2013 has been the Quarters for
Conservation program. It has
allowed us to contribute over
$100,000 to habitat conservation
in a number of African and Asian
locales. The message here is simple
and clear: Habitat Conservation =
Species Preservation. While the
tragedies of hunting and poaching
are the highly visible causes for loss
of rare and endangered species, by
far the greater danger is habitat loss
through agricultural expansion and
deforestation. The extinction of even
a single species should not be tolerated, and that loss can never be reversed.

with the animals and leaves knowing we are doing
our part to make sure the Sacramento Zoo stays a
viable community asset for generations to come.”
Although not obvious to the casual visitor at the Sacramento Zoo, we achieved a
significant milestone in 2013 with the continuation of our accreditation from the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
We are extremely proud that the Sacramento Zoo has been accredited since

1975! AZA accreditation ensures that the animals you visit receive excellent care
every day, and that the organization has met mandatory, rigorous, professional
standards for animal welfare and management, veterinary care, behavioral
enrichment, nutrition and staff training.
Rest assured, however, that it is not a rubber stamp process to continue to
meet and pass the meticulous standards of accreditation. The 2013 application
process was a year in preparation with 230 questions on 26 double-sided pages
and included 186 attached documents covering policies and procedures at the

Sacramento Zoo. Three visiting inspectors took three days to examine every
aspect of operations including animal care, visitor services, conservation efforts,
educational programming, finances and safety.
The AZA accreditation is an objective measure of our long term commitment to

Sacramento Zoo staff, assisted by trained volunteer docents and a select group
of talented teens, continues to provide a wide range of informative programs and
educational opportunities throughout the year. Dedicated docents volunteered
15,898 hours with 180 teens adding an additional 15,508 hours of volunteer
service. In addition, enthusiastic Board members shared their passion for the Zoo
with a number of senior groups, reaching several hundred animal lovers.
In 2013, the Zoo reached over 147,500 young and young-at-heart individuals with
an educational message about wildlife and preserving our environment.

The Zoo’s Education Department provides a variety of programs and experiences
that appeal to children and adults alike. From summer camps and stage shows
to field trips and ZooMobile visits, the Sacramento Zoo is a community resource

The Quarters for Conservation program and
its success has been a huge help in reaching
$100,000 of giving during 2013. This program is
a great example of the Sacramento community
working hand in hand with the Zoo to make a
global impact.
The 2013 recipients that received funding from
the Quarters for Conservation program were the
local Riparian Brush Rabbit Recovery program,
the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary project and the
Masai Giraffe Conservation program. Each of
these species plays an important part in their
local ecosystem and is facing trouble in their
natural habitat. Three new projects will receive
support in 2014 with votes from Zoo visitors:
