welcome
2012
,
We’re proud to present the 8th Annual Boulder International Film Festival, 2012.
A non-profit community film festival, BIFF has become one of the most influential
young film festivals in the U.S.—indeed, “One of the Coolest Film Festivals in the
World,” according to MovieMaker magazine.
It’s all because of you—the film-hip Boulder audiences who show up by the tens of
thousands to be a part of the vast world of ideas and passions that are far beyond
our own America-centric media.
We’re excited this year to welcome one the most-acclaimed actors of our time,
Martin Sheen. As a veteran of over 65 films (including Badlands, Apocalypse Now,
Wall Street, and TV’s “The West Wing”), Mr. Sheen is one of the most talented and
recognizable actors in the world. He is also a committed political activist who has
been arrested over 60 times in peaceful protest demonstrations throughout the U.S.
We’re thrilled to welcome two masters-of-the-movies on Opening Night: legendary director Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill, Raiders of the Lost
Ark) and talented producer Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind, The Tao of Steve, Our Idiot Brother). They will present a pre-release screening of their new film Darling Companion, starring Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline.
Lawrence Kasdan will present Anthony Bregman with our “Award of Excellence in
Producing” after the screening.
Remember Jerry Lundegaard, the sleazy Minnesota car dealer in Fargo? Or Bill
Porter, the super-eager salesman with cerebral palsy in Door to Door? These two
roles show the astonishing range of indie actor William H. Macy (Boogie Nights,
Magnolia, The Cooler, Mr. Holland’s Opus), an Oscar nominee and two-time Emmy
winner who will accept our Vanguard Award during “A Conversation with William
H. Macy” on Friday.
As you know, digital media has exploded over the last few years, and we are proud
to present another edition of our popular Digital Media Symposium. The keynote
speaker is a pioneer of computer graphics, two-time Oscar winner and co-founder
of Pixar, Dr. Alvy Ray Smith. The DiMe Symposium will be moderated by two-time
Oscar nominee, Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Matchgirl).
The world’s independent filmmaker community loves the Boulder International Film
Festival. That’s why more people are taking a long weekend vacation, renting a
room downtown, buying a BIFF VIP pass and going to world-class films, great VIP
parties and rubbing elbows with award-winning filmmakers and major celebrities.
See you at the movies!

Darling Companion
USA, Feature Film, 2012, 103 min
In Darling Companion, Beth (Diane Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the
freeway on a wintry day in Denver. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph
(Kevin Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal.
When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught
Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman (Ayelet Zurer)
in a frantic search. Each member of the search party is affected by the adventure, which
takes them in unexpected directions—comic, harrowing and sometimes deeply emotional, but
ultimately towards love.
Directed by Lawrence Kasdan
Produced by Anthony Bregman, Lawrence Kasdan, Elizabeth Redleaf
Starring Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Dianne Wiest, Mark Duplass, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard,
Elisabeth Moss and Ayelet Zurer
Following the film, acclaimed producer Anthony Bregman will be honored with the BIFF Award of
Excellence in Producing presented by legendary director, writer, producer Lawrence Kasdan.

which he also executive produced.
Backed by the Reagan Administration, brutal Guatemalan
dictator General Efraín Montt led a bloody junta that murdered
tens of thousands of the Maya people. In 1983, the director of
this film, Pamela Yates, bravely went to Guatemala to film the
revolution. The result was the magnificent documentary When
the Mountains Tremble, which showed the thousands of bodies
left by the government's massacres and was narrated by a softspoken young Maya activist named Rigoberta Menchú. The film
won awards worldwide, Rigoberta Menchú won the Nobel Peace
Prize and a peace accord was reached in 1996. But General
Montt was still free. Granito, a thrilling detective story, begins in
2003 when Yates is asked, along with forensic anthropologists,
to weave together the threads of her film to help build a case
for genocide against General Montt (now 85) and his aides. In
2011, the trials began. Subtitled

Monsieur Lazhar

Direct to BIFF from the Sundance Film Festival
When aspiring reporter Manjusha Amberwar's beloved father becomes one of
the 250,000 farmers in central India to have committed suicide, she begins
an investigation. She learns that conventional cotton seeds have been phased
out in her lifetime, and that the multi-national corporation Monsanto's lofty
promises for its genetically-modified cotton have since given way to harsh
reality. In order to buy the expensive new seeds, Indian farmers had to mortgage their land just to plant a crop. But because the new varieties are too
water-hungry to produce a dependable crop for dry central India, hundreds of
thousands of farmers are losing their land. Outrageously, the U.S. government
originally forced India—through the World Trade Organization—to accept
GMOs, and has been forcing WTO members to do the same thing throughout
the world. Subtitled

This is the story of 85-year-old Jiro Ono, a national
treasure of Japan and considered the world’s
greatest sushi chef. He is the proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat restaurant in a Tokyo subway
station. It is the first sushi restaurant to be
awarded a prestigious 3-star Michelin review, and
food lovers from around the world call months in
advance for a coveted—and expensive—seat at
Jiro’s sushi bar. Even at his age, Jiro sees himself
still striving for perfection, working from sunrise
to well beyond sunset to meticulously train his
employees, and to carefully mold and finesse the
impeccable presentation of each sushi creation.
At the heart of this story is Jiro’s relationship with
his son Yoshikazu, the worthy heir to Jiro’s legacy,
who is unable to live up to his full potential in his
father’s shadow. Jiro's son—who divides his passion for sushi with car racing and flying—needs

Love Free or Die: How the Bishop of
New Hampshire is Saving the World
USA, Feature Documentary, 2011, 88 min
Direct to BIFF from the Sundance Film Festival
"This is the time. Right now. This year, 2012."
Macky Alston, director
This film features the consecration of Gene
Robinson, the first openly gay Bishop in Christendom. His historic elevation by the Episcopal
Church in America caused great controversy
worldwide, along with a stream of death threats.
But Gene Robinson refuses to leave the Church—
or the man he loves. By the end of the film,
because of Gene's faith and leadership, the
Church has done a 180-degree turn: more gay
bishops are being considered, more same-sex
marriages are being blessed and, in 2010, history
was made when Gene's conservative home state
of New Hampshire legalized same-sex marriage.
Gene proves that you don't have to leave behind
your Christianity, or your civil rights, just to love
and be loved.

This courageous film tells the story
of a blatantly unjust conviction of a
19-year-old boy for a double homicide
he didn't commit. The case brought in
the international human rights community, which launched a grass-roots
campaign to abolish the death penalty in
the Philippines. This film looks intimately
at the case of Paco Larrañaga, a student
accused of murder on the provincial island
of Cebu. In personal danger through much
of the filming, the filmmakers expose a
Kafkaesque world populated by crooked
public officials, cops on the take and
frenzied tabloid sensationalism. It's also
an intimate drama focused on the nearmythic struggle of two angry mothers
who have dedicated more than a decade

Surviving Progress
Canada, Feature Documentary, 2011, 86 min
Co-produced by Martin Scorsese
Featuring Stephen Hawking, Margaret
Atwood and Jane Goodall
Humanity's ascent is often measured
by the speed of progress. But what if
progress is actually spiraling us downward
towards collapse? This groundbreaking
film shows how past civilizations were
destroyed by "progress traps"—alluring
technologies and belief systems that serve
immediate needs but ransom the future.
As pressure on the world's resources
accelerates and financial elites bankrupt
nations, can our globally entwined civilization escape a final, catastrophic progress
trap? With potent images and illuminating
insights from thinkers who have probed
our genes, our brains and our social
behavior, this requiem to progress-asusual also poses a challenge: to prove that
making apes smarter isn't an evolutionary
dead-end.

Township to the Stage
USA/South Africa, Feature Documentary, 2011, 84 min
Growing up in South Africa, Trevor Noah is
the son of a white man and a black woman.
His mother had to pose as the maid because
mixed relationships were illegal. Trevor’s
childhood bridged different neighborhoods,
races and languages, leaving him with funny
stories to tell in his meteoric rise in stand-up
comedy. Apartheid has long been gone, but
when Trevor was starting as a stand-up
comic, comedians of color had only recently
started performing on stage; they go beyond
just settling for easy laughs and confront the
legacy of apartheid head on in their material.
In this volatile environment, Trevor faced a
multitude of challenges: an underdeveloped
comedy scene, criticism from other comics,
lingering racial tension, and a shocking family tragedy that threatens Trevor’s dreams of
lifting himself and the South African comedy
scene to the global stage.

Documented over five years by villager Emad
Burnat, this amazing film tells the story of
the Palestinian village of Bil’in, which famously chose nonviolent resistance when the
Israeli army confiscated much of its land for
Jewish colonists and built a wall through the
village. Despite court orders and protesters
from Israel and around the world supporting the people of Bil’in, the new settlements
and the wall continue to be constructed.
Bil’in becomes famous for its peaceful
protest demonstrations every Friday—which
the Israeli Defense Force tries to suppress
with astonishing brutality. Soldiers fire into
Emad’s cameras and explode them with
grenades. Emad, a Palestinian, joins forces

breathtaking. His 65 films include some of the most memorable American
movies of all time: Apocalypse Now, Bobby (with William H. Macy), Wall
Street, Catch-22, Badlands, Gandhi, Catch Me If You Can, The American
President and many others.
More recent films include Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston, Talk to Me
with Don Cheadle, The Double with Richard Gere and Stella Days, for which
Sheen received an Irish Academy Film Award nomination for Best Actor.
Currently, he can be seen in The Way, written and directed by his son Emilio

A new film by Academy Award-nominated producer Don Hahn

director Michael Brown (Farther Than the Eye Can See)
Since 2002, almost 50,000 U.S. soldiers have returned home from Iraq and
Afghanistan with their lives radically altered by war. They face long, painful paths
to recovery. This beautiful, powerfully moving film tells the story of 11 wounded
veterans whose road to recovery takes them to one of the guardians of Everest—
the 20,161-foot Himalayan peak known as Lobuche. One veteran is blind, three have
lost limbs, and all 11 suffer from the mental and emotional ravages of war. Blind
adventurer Erik Weihenmayer and his history-making team of Everest climbers
guide the soldiers, and together they take on a formidable mountain challenge,
all in the name of celebrating the return of our nation’s heroes.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
UK, Feature Film, 2011, 112 min
From the beloved director of Chocolat and the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Slumdog Millionaire
comes the inspirational comedy Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. A visionary sheik (Amr Waked) has
a big dream—to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his
representative (Emily Blunt) to turn his dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require
the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor), who happens to think the
project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press
secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) latches on for its potential as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this
unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and
fish to prove the impossible possible.

In 2010, WikiLeaks released a grainy video that stunned
the world. Recorded from the gunsight camera of a U.S.
Army attack helicopter, the footage depicts the shooting
deaths of two Iraqi journalists, along with eight other
unarmed individuals on the streets of Baghdad. It is
told from the perspective of U.S. Army Specialist Ethan
McCord, who, on the ground, witnessed the carnage
and rescued two injured children caught in the firing
line. This important film finally puts human faces on the
abstract military term “civilian casualties.”

Narrated by Robert Redford and Boulder's Warren Miller, this incredible documentary was made by a man who knows how to make films with heart-stopping, high-risk
action—Kurt Miller. Having directed 36 ski films while he was the head of Warren
Miller Entertainment, Kurt now turns his talents towards adaptive sport skiing,
telling the amazing stories of athletes with disabilities who have defined this sport.
We meet Jim Martinson, a Paralympic Gold Medalist who invented the adaptive
mono-ski after losing his legs in Vietnam; Chris Waddell, the most decorated skier
in U.S. Paralympic history; Mike May, the world-record holder for speed skiing (65
mph) by a completely blind person; and 61-year-old Rick Finklestein, who, after four
days of training on a mono-ski, warily rides up

This sweet comedy tells the universal story of assimilation by one
family over several generations in a strange land. “What am I, German or Turk?” asks six-year-old Cenk Yilmaz when neither his Turkish nor his German schoolmates pick him for their football teams. In
an attempt to comfort Cenk, his 22-year-old cousin Canan tells the
story of their grandfather Hüseyin, who came to Germany at the end
of the ‘60s as "guest worker number one million and one," and who
later brought his wife and children. The laugh-out-loud humor from
cultural misunderstandings multiplies when grandfather Hüseyin
purchases land in his home village of Anatalya, Turkey, and insists
his family all come “home” with him on a road trip. Can you ever

reach historic levels, creating the most expensive

cause—extreme right and extreme left forces—are
ripping apart the middle ground in America, holding
American democracy hostage. Today, money, power

How hard is it to become a spiritual leader, complete with disciples, followers
and groupies? Could it be done by a cynical guy from New Jersey? To find
out, filmmaker Vikram Gandhi, an American of Indian ancestry, embarks on
a three-year experiment to discover why so many otherwise sensible people
possess the impulse to follow spiritual and religious frauds. Vikram grows
a beard, buys a robe, learns his grandmother's mumbling Indian accent
(along with a few yoga positions) and moves to Arizona. At the height of his
popularity, Vikram (now Kumare from Alikash) begins to be overwhelmed by
the desperation of his followers to believe in something, anything, even HIM,

and was swept up in the democracy protests, becoming the
symbol of the Burmese people’s struggle against military
rule. She spent years in prison or under house arrest. When
Aris was dying of cancer in 1999, the junta denied him
entry to Burma to see his wife for the last time, while Suu
Kyi refused to leave for fear she couldn’t return. Beautifully acted and sumptuously filmed, The Lady is both a
heartbreaking and triumphant portrait of one of the most
courageous people of our time.
Now known as the British Oskar Schindler, Nicholas Winton, while
vacationing in Prague in 1938, learned about the refugees fleeing
Hitler’s army and about the many children who were in danger
of losing their lives. Winton took action: He managed to arrange
visas and admission to British families for nearly 700 Central
European Jewish children. After the war, he returned to his private
life and never mentioned this incident. Fifty years later, his wife
found a scrapbook full of documents and transport plans. Today,
102-year-old Sir Nicholas Winton, knighted by Queen Elizabeth and
nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, is unbelievably active and
still engaged in charity work. He is surrounded by his children, his
grandchildren and, of course, all of his rescued “children,” who
today represent almost 6,000 people.

Cape Spin: An American Power Struggle
USA, Feature Documentary, 2011, 86 min
A company proposes to build 130 40-story wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, highly visible from the shores of Martha’s Vineyard,
America's water playground for the super-rich. The technology is
not rocket science; huge turbine farms have been in the North Sea
for a generation, and they can generate electricity at one-third
the cost of solar. It’s classic NIMBY vs. Greens, except both sides
have millions to spend on "public information" campaigns that
have degenerated into explosive battles of distortion and deception. The filmmakers have wisely decided to not take sides, which
has allowed them to present each camp, in its respective fervor,
as both surreal and disturbingly funny.

Chasing Ice
USA, Feature Documentary, 2012, 74 min
Direct to BIFF from the Sundance Film Festival
Produced in Boulder by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jerry Aronson (The
Divided Trail) and Oscar-winning producer Paula DuPré Pesmen (The
Cove), this breathtakingly beautiful film is one of the most anticipated
documentaries of 2012. Famed National Geographic photographer James
Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras throughout the Arctic to
capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His electrifying videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of
ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking—and rapidly accelerating—rate. Chasing Ice is a hair-raising adventure story as cinematographer and director Jeff Orlowski follows Balog and his team through brutal
weather on three continents while Balog bravely documents the biggest
story facing humanity.
