IN TOUCH The Alumni Newsletter for Immaculate Heart of Mary School http://www.ihmschoolbelmont.org http://www.facebook.com/Immaculate-Heart--of-Mary-School-Belmont Spring 2013 Volume 14, Issue 1 IHM School 1000 Alameda de las Pulgas Belmont, CA 94002 IN TOUCH is published by the Alumni Committee of IHM: Mrs. Karen Andreano, Kelly Andreano ’95, Patrick V. Collins ‘78, Genevieve Galvez Desuasido ‘91, Breanne Melconian ’97, Chris O’Connor ’91, Gina Carbullido Poss ‘76, Marie Borrecco Rinaldi ‘78 Principal’s Corner Another school year comes to a close, which means another IHM class will graduate. Twenty-six students will be venturing to five different high schools and become members of the IHM Alumni Group! Just as you did—a year ago, a few years ago, or many years ago, they will take with them a strong sense of community into their new schools. Each graduation brings together a community that is proud of accomplishments with a renewed commitment to celebrating the past, present, and future of IHM! In August, we will be celebrating the future graduates of the Class of 2021! Actually, we will be celebrating our preschool students from the Classes of 2022 and 2023! My mission to partner with your invaluable experiences, knowledge, and commitment to IHM School will prepare these students with a strong Catholic education foundation. Sadly, we will be celebrating a good bye to Mrs. Karen Andreano. She has been a part of the Alumni Committee for many years. Her contribution and leadership will be truly missed. We wish her the best in her retirement from education, but know that her dedication to IHM will keep her in the halls of our school! To Karen, “May you retire knowing that you have made remarkable contributions to IHM and have touched the lives of your colleagues and students in immeasurable ways.” Warm regards, Mrs. Teri Grosey 1 2 ALUMNI UPDATES We pray for the soul of Robert Delescale '62 who passed away May 10, 2011. IN TOUCH Spring 2013 1 2 On May 31, 2013 Taylor Ann Collins will graduate from Immaculate Heart of Mary School. She will graduate, the last of twelve descendants of the Timothy V. Collins family. In the “rear view mirror of life” Taylor will see many cousins, an aunt and several uncles who all preceded her as IHM graduates. It will be a bittersweet moment for her and her family as she walks down the center isle of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church knowing that she is the last in a long line of young adults to make “the walk.” Immaculate Heart of Mary A COLLINS FAMILY TRADITION by Patrick Collins This heritage all began when Timothy V. Collins met Peggy Vollert, both native San Franciscans, at Saint Brendan’s Teen Club in 1950. Tim and Peggy, met, dated, married, and decided to have a family. They moved to Reno, Nevada and had three children while Tim attended University of Nevada Reno working on a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Tim and Peggy raised their family, young Tim (Timothy Charles), Kathleen, and Michael for several years in Reno while Tim worked on his degree. In 1962 Timothy and Peggy relocated and bought a home in Belmont. Time marched-on and in 1964 their last child was born, Patrick. It was determined early on that all four children were going to attend a local Catholic grammarmiddle school and Immaculate Heart of Mary was the perfect fit. It was a one mile walk to school, in a safe community, and it was associated with a familyoriented parish. All four of the Timothy V. Collins children attended and graduated from IHM as planned. Timothy Charles graduated in 1972, Kathleen graduated in 1973, Michael graduated in 1974, and Patrick graduated in 1978. The oldest child, Timothy Charles, proceeded to Serra High School and graduated from Sacramento State University. Tim met his wife, Suzanne while in Sacramento, and had two children Samantha (a sophomore) and Kelly (grade 4), both who attend Catholic schools in Sacramento. Kathleen (Rosario) Collins proceeded to Notre Dame High School in Belmont and graduated from Sacramento State University. Kathy and her husband, Ric Rosario, had four children. Maggie graduated in 2003 and proceeded to Notre Dame, then Sacramento State University, and currently resides in Sacramento as a Probation Officer. Ricky graduated in 2005, Daniel in 2006, and Joe in 2008. They all graduated from Serra High School. Ricky will receive a Finance degree from Chico State this year. Daniel currently attends Cal State Monterey Bay where he is working on an Environmental Science degree. Joe is a freshman at Chico State where he studies Business. Michael Collins graduated from Serra High School in 1978 and continued his studies at Sacramento State. Mike married his childhood sweetheart, Sherri, and had two children, Shelby and Sean. Shelby graduated from IHM in 2006, went on to Notre Dame Belmont, and proceeded to UC Davis and is working on a degree in Kinesiology. Her brother Sean graduated from IHM in 2008. After IHM Sean attended Serra and graduated from Carlmont High School in Belmont. Sean currently attends Skyline College where he is a pitcher on their baseball team. Patrick graduated from Serra High School in in 1982. He then attended Saint Mary’s College in Moraga and graduated in 1986. Patrick and Lori met in San Carlos in 1989. Patrick and Lori have two children, Garret and Taylor, and live in Redwood City. Garret graduated from IHM in 2012 and is currently a freshman at Serra High School, where he runs Track. Taylor will graduate from IHM this year and will attend Notre Dame Belmont. Taylor enjoys sports and sings for the IHM choir. Our family has been blessed to have been a part of the IHM School Community and continues to be a part of the IHM Parish. It is with the wisdom and forethought of Timothy V. Collins {deceased 1998} and his wife Peggy that twelve children began and completed a long journey from childhood to young adult, prepared for challenging schools and ultimately prepared for life with an educational “tool box” and moral compass. The graduation of Taylor Ann Collins, twelfth in a long line of graduates, will most certainly be a bittersweet day for all descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy V. Collins. 3 IN TOUCH Spring 2013 Class of 1985 Reunion Immaculate Heart of Mary Class of 1985 came together in March of this year for a reunion. With a resounding 15 out of 24 graduates in attendance, they shared wine, food and wonderful memories. Congratulations Class of '85! Back Row: Mark Borrecco, Stan Kwong, Damien Fairbairn, Stephanie Hunt, Lisa Thomas,Tammy Pereira, Chandra McKeon, Jeanine Perkins,Theresa Shea,Shauna Chiapella, Sheila Sharei Seated: Matt Delcarlo, Dean LaRussa, Babette Snerding, Fred Dianda Fall Newsletter Correction (Thank you, Linda Burkard Flashberg, class of 1963) When reading an article in the November 2012 Newsletter by Lorraine Merrick Turner, ’62 titled “Fifty-Year Reunion for the Class of 1962”, I was interested to read that she states “We were the last eighth grade class who walked the halls of the old school building.” This is not actually a true statement. Class of 1962 was the last class to graduate from the old school building. The th class of 1963 was actually the last 8 grade class to “walk the halls of the old school building”. The student body did not move to the new school building until sometime in the 1962-1963 school year as it was not finished by the beginning of that school year. Perhaps, as Ms. Turner departed the school in June of 1962, she assumed that her class was the last class schooled there. Technically, the Class of 1963 has that distinction. Therefore, please correct this misinformation in your next news letter as that time was very emotional for all the parents and students still enrolled. We were torn from a building that held all our elementary memories and transferred to a whole new scenario. We looked at this move sentimentally but also with some trepidation and excitement. th Sister Peter was the Principal and 8 Grade teacher at the time and was exceptionally adept at making the move a smooth transition. IHM Basketball started it all... Joshua Urbiztondo, who first played basketball on an IHM team back in 4th grade is now 6’1” and playing for the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) in Manila, Philippines. Coming from Fresno State, he played on scholarship and was well into his decision that he wanted to do this professionally. Qualifying for the chance to play in the PBA was a lot work for Josh and his parents as Filipino- American players under go many background and paperwork checks to be allowed to play. He has been playing in the Philippines since 2006 and has immersed himself into the language, culture, and media of the sport. Somewhat of a celebrity, he is stopped on streets for pictures and autographs and has been featured many times on billboards throughout town, news highlights, and the infamous "top 10 plays of the week." He enjoys the sport and is a joy to watch because of his energy and obvious love of the game. His former teacher, Jenny Mattei, remembers him as the kid who could never sit still. This still holds true as he commands the court with a fire only the love of basketball can kindle, which coincidentally earned him the name Joshua "The Fireball" Urbiztondo among his fans. A great big THANK YOU to Gina Carbullido Poss, ‘76 for her 12 years of helping us put together this newsletter. Gina has been our computer guru who was able to fit everything in and make it look so nice. Thank you again for all your efforts. 4 IN TOUCH Spring 2013 IHM Book of Heartfelt Petitions Memorial Cards – Forever in our Hearts Spiritual Bouquet Cards – Always in our Hearts Celebrate the life of family or friends with a prayer card from Immaculate Heart of Mary School. There are children at Immaculate Heart of Mary School who come from families that, without assistance are unable to take advantage of our Catholic education. Yet, because of they value a Catholic school education, these families are willing to make sacrifices to enroll their children in our school. The IHM Student Assistance Fund, with your support, makes up the difference between the cost to educate a student in the school and what a family can pay. Your acts of kindness can make a difference in a child’s life. For those of you who are interested in supporting us through this fund and are reading this newsletter electronically, you have an attachment explaining this fund and a contribution form. Those of you who do not receive the newsletter electronically please contact the school office or you can send us a check with IHM Student Assistance Fund on the ‘for’ line.
