ROUND 1 April 9th, 2016 - Essendon District Football League
FOOTBALLER THE ROUND 1 April 9th, 2016 CEO's Perspective Strathmore hitting the lead early in the last quarter, only for Keilor to run away 22-point winners. The Strathmore Community Bank has been generous enough to provide all clubs with an allocation of fixture cards for the 2016 season. I encourage all supporters to grab a fixture card from their club. If you do, you can be in the running for a $500 saving account with the Strathmore Community Bank, but you will need to watch The Local Footy Show on Channel 31 to see if the unique number on your card is drawn. In the 2016 fixture, supporters will notice some key matchups this season. In AFL circles there has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about the merits of Good Friday Football, an initiative that the AFL has yet to take advantage of. In the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division, three games have been scheduled for Sunday 24 April being West Coburg playing Maribyrnong Park at Coburg City Oval, Pascoe Vale hosting Keilor and Avondale Heights hosting Aberfeldie. The Queens Birthday weekend will see Airport West play Avondale Heights on Saturday 11 June in what will be one of only two EDFL matches played on this day. The appetite amongst EDFL supporters was clearly evident at the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division match between Keilor and Strathmore played on Good Friday. The crowd that attended was the biggest since this annual fixture commenced. The match itself was of a high standard with In the Essendon Ford Division 1 competition Tullamarine will host Glenroy in a twilight fixture in Round 1 under lights, with that match to kick off at 6pm. Glenroy will also host Westmeadows in their annual ANZAC Day match to be played on Monday 25 April. WELCOME everyone to Round 1 of the 2016 EDFL season. In the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 competition Burnside Heights will host East Sunbury in Round 1 in a twilight match starting at 5pm, and Keilor Park will host Roxburgh Park in a twilight match in Round 3 to be played on Sunday 24 April starting at 5pm. Jacana will host the now annual Queens Birthday weekend clash with East Sunbury on Saturday 11 June. The Round 2 match between East Sunbury and Jacana will be played at Eric Boardman Reserve (home ground of Sunbury Kangaroos) due to a softball carnival making their home ground unavailable on this weekend. Supporters are also in line for three rounds of premiership flag unfurling with Aberfeldie to unfurl their Premier Division flag in Round 1, Essendon Doutta Stars to unfurl their Division 1 flag in Round 2 and Hadfield to unfurl their Division 2 flag in Round 3. Congratulations to all three clubs on their 2015 premiership success and as supporters make sure you get along to these games to celebrate these magnificent achievements with these clubs. I hope you enjoy the 2016 season in the Essendon District Football League. They really exposed us and they were still a seriously good team coming off back-to-back (flags) at that point. “They threw everything at us. We were down by 42 points at one stage, almost got back to even terms late in the last quarter, all that sort of stuff. “It was a real rollercoaster game … a fabulous game.” By ADEM SARICAOGLU Then the rollercoaster continued. EXACTLY how did Aberfeldie President John Larkins feel on the morning of September 12, 2015? “That Greenvale one (2013 Grand Final), we got stagefright that day,” he said. “Incredibly apprehensive,” answered the newly inducted EDFL Life Member. “We just weren’t as ready for it as a group even though we’d won in the second semi. For Larkins, the journey he’s embarked upon to finally taste ultimate glory in the EDFL’s most prestigious competition has been somewhat of a viscous rollercoaster. “It was a different stage and a big stage.” It had been 41 years since the club’s only A-Grade senior flag – a well-covered fact in the lead-up to last year’s Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final. Also discussed at length was the fact Aberfeldie had made the Grand Final in 2013 and 2014 and fallen short by a combined 16 points. Arguably the Gorillas were favourites on both occasions. And while Abers may have saluted in a canter in last year’s September 12 decider to the tune of 76 points over its great Section Road rival, that journey to realise the moment isn’t lost on Larkins. “I just wondered whether any playing group could really withstand all those factors. The 19 and zip, the 41-year history, the two losing Grand Finals and so on,” Larkins said, overlooking the Windy Hill playing surface from the EDFL’s new boardroom. “I didn’t really enjoy the day that much, to tell you the truth.” Despite fact he hasn’t seen his football club lose a senior game in 18 months, Larkins is always mindful of the pathway Aberfeldie took to a perfect season. Always at the forefront of his mind is the three-peat of season-ending finals losses that preceded September 12, 2015. THE FOOTBALLER Abers took to that stage much better in 2014 but in the dying stages of a Windy Hill classic, they couldn’t penetrate a defiant gold and navy blue wall. “That Strathmore loss… well I think it was 23 inside-50s to six in the last quarter but we could not get in front. That was agonising, that game,” Larkins recalled. “Hitting the post, I can see Nick Cattapan hitting the post even now.” With all that “baggage” (as Larkins describes it) going into a third successive Grand Final having not lost a single game for the year, those wearing two shades of blue were on a mission. That was pretty clear from the first bounce. Larkins’ EDFL journey began as a parent wanting to play a role at his local footy club. He slowly became more hands-on at Clifton Park through the late 1990s and eventually went on to also sit on the EDFL Rules Committee. “I’ve learnt a hell of a lot,” Larkins said. “I was pretty green when I started, I have to say. “Our club was fined because I had the temerity to make grog official on our hill at Aberfeldie and at that stage, at least technically, the league rules didn’t allow that to happen. So it wasn’t much of a start.” “We had to respond if we were going to become a club that was respected.” For the best part of two decades Larkins has seen community footy grow from what he called a “cottage industry” and become what is best-described as semi-professional. “I always say to people … you need the passion for it but you also need to be pretty hard-headed about it, too,” he said. “There’s a role for passion but there’s also a role for objectivity, so that’s where I’d like to think we’ve gone from, as indeed the whole of the EDFL has. “To be strong on-field you need to be very strong off-field, and today as you deal with players who are coming out of a professional environment, the environment you’ve got to provide for them is totally different to what it was 12 or 15 years ago. Three Grand Finals and one elusive trophy later, Aberfeldie finally sits atop the EDFL tree and now its long-suffering, yet profusely driven president is an EDFL Life Member. “I was very proud and very moved by it, it was a surprise that night,” he said of his induction. “I was really greatly humbled by it, because it’s in my DNA, community sport, particularly football. “I absolutely love it at this grassroots level because at the end of the day, any contribution you make at this level of footy really has the capacity to affect society and community in a way that perhaps the big end of town don’t really get. “You’re making a difference, potentially, to people’s lives.” “Even if you look at something as simple as trainers. When I started with senior footy we had one trainer, now we’ve got the whole back-up group, there’s a Monday night rehab session, there’s physios … it’s lightyears from what it was. “Not that I didn’t love it and I’m not disrespecting anything that was happening then, but for someone who’s played AFL footy, when they come into your environment, they may not expect the world. But it’s got to be something at least semi-professional for you to really get the best out of them.” For the past decade and a half, Larkins has observed with admiration the rise of Greenvale – who under the leadership of Bruce Kent has grown from a battler to a proven EDFL powerhouse. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Larkins’ Aberfeldie was barely surviving relegation. In that time, he watched as Strathmore, Maribyrnong Park and Greenvale dominated the old A-Grade competition. “Everything has gone up, including your training costs,” Larkins explained. “For us, it has certainly been a response to the environment. We could have sat and, not so much given up, but just treated the whole thing as beyond us. “I’d been president then for seven or eight years and I THE FOOTBALLER – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 1111 Fixture - Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Round 4 - 2:05 PM / Fri 25 Mar Round 7 - 2:15 PM / Sat 28 May Round 13 - 2:15 PM / Sat 16 Jul Keilor 15.16-106 Strathmore 12.12-84 Greenvale vs Aberfeldie Avondale Heights vs Essendon Doutta Stars 2:15 PM / Sat 30 Apr Airport West vs Maribyrnong Park West Coburg vs Aberfeldie Aberfeldie vs West Coburg Strathmore vs Avondale Heights Greenvale vs Airport West Airport West vs Greenvale Essendon Doutta Stars vs Keilor Strathmore vs Keilor Maribyrnong Park vs Pascoe Vale Essendon Doutta Stars vs Avondale Heights Round 1 - 2:15 PM / Sat 9 Apr Avondale Heights vs Keilor Aberfeldie vs Maribyrnong Park Airport West vs West Coburg Strathmore vs Essendon Doutta Stars Pascoe Vale vs Greenvale Round 2 - 2:15 PM / Sat 16 Apr Greenvale vs Strathmore Pascoe Vale vs Maribyrnong Park Round 8 - 2:15 PM / Sat 4 Jun Round 14 - 2:15 PM / Sat 23 Jul Avondale Heights vs Greenvale Avondale Heights vs West Coburg Aberfeldie vs Airport West Aberfeldie vs Pascoe Vale Maribyrnong Park vs Keilor Pascoe Vale vs Essendon Doutta Stars West Coburg vs Strathmore Round 9 - 2:15 PM / Sat 11 Jun Airport West vs Avondale Heights Airport West vs Pascoe Vale 2:15 PM / Sat 18 Jun Keilor vs West Coburg Greenvale vs West Coburg Maribyrnong Park vs Avondale Heights Keilor vs Aberfeldie Essendon Doutta Stars vs Aberfeldie Strathmore vs Pascoe Vale Round 3 - 2:15 PM / Sat 23 Apr Essendon Doutta Stars vs Maribyrnong Park Greenvale vs Essendon Doutta Stars Round 10 - 2:15 PM / Sat 25 Jun Strathmore vs Airport West West Coburg vs Airport West 2:15 PM / Sun 24 Apr Greenvale vs Pascoe Vale West Coburg vs Maribyrnong Park Keilor vs Avondale Heights Pascoe Vale vs Keilor 5:00 PM / Sun 24 Apr Avondale Heights vs Aberfeldie Round 5 - 2:15 PM / Sat 7 May West Coburg vs Avondale Heights Greenvale vs Keilor Strathmore vs Maribyrnong Park Essendon Doutta Stars vs Airport West Maribyrnong Park vs Aberfeldie Essendon Doutta Stars vs Strathmore Round 11 - 2:15 PM / Sat 2 Jul Avondale Heights vs Maribyrnong Park Aberfeldie vs Essendon Doutta Stars Strathmore vs Greenvale Airport West vs Essendon Doutta Stars Keilor vs Greenvale Maribyrnong Park vs Strathmore Round 15 - 2:15 PM / Sat 30 Jul Greenvale vs Maribyrnong Park Airport West vs Keilor Strathmore vs Aberfeldie Essendon Doutta Stars vs West Coburg Pascoe Vale vs Avondale Heights Round 16 - 2:15 PM / Sat 6 Aug Avondale Heights vs Strathmore Aberfeldie vs Greenvale West Coburg vs Pascoe Vale Keilor vs Essendon Doutta Stars Maribyrnong Park vs Airport West Round 17 - 2:15 PM / Sat 13 Aug Greenvale vs Avondale Heights Airport West vs Aberfeldie Keilor vs Maribyrnong Park Pascoe Vale vs Airport West Strathmore vs West Coburg West Coburg vs Keilor Essendon Doutta Stars vs Pascoe Vale Round 12 - 2:15 PM / Sat 9 Jul Round 18 - 2:15 PM / Sat 20 Aug Avondale Heights vs Pascoe Vale Aberfeldie vs Avondale Heights Avondale Heights vs Airport West Aberfeldie vs Strathmore Airport West vs Strathmore Aberfeldie vs Keilor West Coburg vs Essendon Doutta Stars Keilor vs Pascoe Vale West Coburg vs Greenvale Keilor vs Airport West Maribyrnong Park vs West Coburg Maribyrnong Park vs Essendon Doutta Stars Maribyrnong Park vs Greenvale Essendon Doutta Stars vs Greenvale Pascoe Vale vs Strathmore Pascoe Vale vs Aberfeldie Round 6 - 2:15 PM / Sat 14 May 12 Pascoe Vale vs West Coburg THE FOOTBALLER – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au Preview - Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division By TOBIE CHAPMAN After Keilor and Strathmore kicked off with a Good Friday Special two weeks ago, it’s finally time for the official start to the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division season. Aberfeldie start out the season as favourites, but it won’t be easy to repeat their dream 2015 with some impressive signings for their competition. Avondale Heights v Keilor Keilor are coming off a gutsy win against Strathmore, and the week off will have been appreciated by Mick McGuane’s team. Avondale Heights have a new coach in the form of Daniel Archer and have experienced a fair turnover since last season and are no certainty to make finals, so a positive start to the season could be vital. This clash is made even more meaningful as a result of Michael Tanner, Luke Cartelli and Dean Galea all leaving Avondale to line up for Keilor over the break. Cartelli played a major role in helping Keilor win first up, while Galea showed how dangerous he is around the goals and Avondale will almost certainly be worse off for their departures. Keilor will be keen to follow up with another win and send a message to Aberfeldie early on in the season. Keilor won both games against Avondale last season and expect them to put in a good showing again. Aberfeldie v Maribyrnong Park Reigning premiers Aberfeldie kick off their season at home against a Maribyrnong Park now featuring former Geelong midfielder Joel Corey. Aberfeldie have lost star ruckman Angus Graham, but have kept their midfield core while adding former North Melbourne ruckman Ben Mabon, who has spent the last two years in the SANFL. They’ve also added VFL experience in the form of Angus Grigg, who spent time at North Ballarat, and the returning Sam Cattapan, who placed third in the Northern Blues’ Best & Fairest in 2014. Maribyrnong Park are an improved side from last year, but it’s tough to see them challenging Aberfeldie first up. With the addition of Corey and Port Melbourne Colts boys Nick and Chris Prowse, they may be a sneaky chance, but Abers are a terrific football side. THE FOOTBALLER Airport West v West Coburg Both these sides had difficult seasons last year, winning three and four games respectively. Airport West have brought in Damien Cupido as coach, but will likely spend the season battling relegation. Similarly, so will West Coburg in their second season in the Premier Division. They’ve got a number of new recruits in and will be hoping for improvement on their four wins but it won’t be an easy task. This should be a tight battle though, two sides that are in similar positions. Airport West had the edge late in the season with a win at home despite inaccurate kicking, but West Coburg won early on in 2015. Hansen Reserve may prove to be the difference this week, but expect a hard-fought match. Strathmore v Essendon Doutta Stars It’s not an easy assignment up first for Dean Wallis and the newly promoted Stars but it’s a challenge they should relish. Strathmore were somewhat disappointing against Keilor, but with some big ins it may take a little time for it all to come together. Hamish McIntosh started slowly last week but soon found his feet against strong competition and should play a key role this week. The Stars have some handy additions who could make immediate impact in former AFL players Cleve Hughes and Darren Pfeiffer, but it’s never easy to predict the fortunes of a newly-promoted side. Wallis and co. will be looking for at least a full-hearted effort and competitiveness early on, but if Strathmore are to challenge this year these are the games they need to really assert themselves in. Pascoe Vale v Greenvale (Live from 2pm on 98.9 North West FM & EDFL Team App) These sides finished third and second in the regular season last year, before Pascoe Vale were beaten in the Semi-Final by Keilor, while Greenvale were comfortably beaten twice by Aberfeldie in the finals. Greenvale in particular will be looking to come out firing, a Grand Final loss fresh in their minds and they’ve retained most of that side, with a few handy inclusions. Pascoe Vale haven’t been as lucky over the offseason, with a number of departures outweighing their inclusions, but on the positive side they’ve retained all of last years’ big recruits. Pascoe Vale are at home, but on paper Greenvale have the stronger side and should be a step ahead this season. – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 1313 14 THE FOOTBALLER – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au Results - Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division PREMIER DIVISION RESULTS UNDER 18.5 PREMIER DIVISION Keilor 5.5-35 7.6-48 10.11-71 15.16-106 Keilor 3.4-22 6.11-47 11.14-80 17.19-121 Strathmore 4.4-28 6.7-43 10.8-68 12.12-84 Strathmore 3.0-18 5.0-30 5.1-31 7.3-45 Keilor Keilor Goal Kickers: L. – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au Preview - Essendon Ford Division 1 By AKSHAY KAPADIA Oak Park v Craigieburn Craigieburn have proven themselves last season after continuous seasons towards the bottom of the ladder. Last season’s Grand Final lose to Essendon Doutta Stars have pundits predicting that they may go one spot further this season. They’ll be travelling to JP Fawkner Reserve to face Oak Park, who have brought in some fresh faces including Blair Cronin, Dean Smith and Ben Shiels. Northern Saints v Westmeadows The Northern Saints have come down from the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division after a 0-18 season in the top division. This season, they will need to improve with new head coach Daniel Foley to make sure they don’t slip further back into Strathmore Community Bank Division 2. This week, they will face Westmeadows in what should be an easy game for the Tigers. Westmeadows should have an easy start to the season before their bye in Round 5. This season, they are hoping to go further into the finals. Hillside v Taylors Lakes Hillside will look to rely on Jackson Volpato this season, after his brilliant performance with the Western Jets last season that took him away from Hillside duties. His full-time commitment here could help the Sharks rise up the ladder. But first, they’ll have to face Taylors Lakes who have a lot to prove with their second-year coach Sam Tankard after slipping down the ladder a bit. This season, the Lions will be looking to move back up the ladder. THE FOOTBALLER Tullamarine v Glenroy (6pm Start) Tullamarine made it deep into the finals and will look to go one step closer this season by making it into the Grand Final this year after going down to Craigieburn in the Preliminary Final. They face Glenroy, who under new coach Ross Terranova will look to prove his form in recent years with NFL Division 3 side Reservoir. – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au Preview - Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 By MICHAEL HABER Jacana vs East Keilor Possibly the marquee match of Round 1 in the Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 season will be between last year’s losing grand finalists, Jacana, and the team that was relegated from Essendon Ford Division 1, East Keilor. Jacana’s strong midfield will boast the likes of Mick Evans whereas East Keilor will be sporting a younger team this season, with a few 18-year-olds stepping up to senior football. Jacana will be out to prove that last season’s Grand Final berth was not a fluke and East Keilor will be wanting to show that they are the team to beat. This match will be fierce as both teams want to show that they are the best in the division and that they deserve the promotion. Keilor Park vs Moonee Valley Keilor Park had the season from hell last year, everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. They only managed to muster up the two wins for the season but are hoping that this year they can be more competitive as their old coach, Marcus Barclay takes back the reigns. Moonee Valley were stunned last year as they lost in the finals after finishing third in the division. They will be rearing to get off to a strong start against Keilor Park so that they can get into a strong position after the first game. This will be a tough match for Keilor Park but they went through some massive changes during the preseason and are out to be a more competitive side in 2016. in one of last year’s leading goal-scorers, Osama Saad from Hadfield. The match will be a tight contest as both teams are looking to play finals and will be wanting to start the year off strongly against good competition. Burnside Heights vs East Sunbury (5pm start) Burnside Heights play East Sunbury at home in the first twilight match of the season. Both teams had a very average 2015 and finished well off the pace of fifth-placed Coburg Districts. Both of these teams have a ‘cellar dweller’ reputation and are definitely wanting to shake that this season. This match can create the competitive spirit that both these teams need in 2016. Both of the teams have recruited younger players and are developing depth and this match will be good for trying out new tactics so that they can get the combative culture needed to do well against the stronger teams in the division. Under lights, this game will feel like two teams wanting to get away from their gloomy past and start afresh in the light of a new year. Roxburgh Park vs Coburg Districts Roxburgh Park were a very strong team last season, finishing second on the ladder but then lost in the finals. They will be sporting a very different team in 2016 as they have aimed to bring bigger bodies to the club which was their weakness last year. They will however miss last year’s Best & Fairest winner, Matt Walker, who made the switch to Glenroy. Coburg Districts just missed out on the finals despite having a very solid 2015 season. They have had many changes and pulled THE FOOTBALLER – The Essendon District Football League Record www.essendondfl.com.au 3333 Strathmore Community Bank Division 2 1 2 3S 3R 4S 4R 5 6 7 8 9S 9R 10 11
