Winter 2016 - Bellevue Friends of the Library
WINTER REVIEW 2016 www.bellevuefriends.org From The President 2015 was a busy and productive year for Bellevue Friends of the Library. It included three large book sales, three membership events, a volunteer training day, an auction, 354 days of work in the marking room and Corner Book Shop, ongoing book sales at Lake Hills, our Crossroads book giveaway event, two membership drives, many volunteer hours spent on special projects and committees, and more than 100 library programs and events sponsored by BFOL. In the first five days of December, BFOL held two events that collectively raised nearly $10,000. This was the perfect culmination of a successful year of generous giving and dedicated volunteerism. For 2016, we have increased our financial commitment to our three libraries. This translates to more programs and educational opportunities for the nearly 50,000 library patrons who attend BFOL sponsored programs and events each year. We are thankful for your gifts, whether of time, or of dollars from membership dues, or of in-kind donations from our corporate donors, or of items to sell in our Corner Book Shop. As a result of your hard work, support and dedication, we continue to draw new members, increase community awareness about our organization, and see higher revenue from our sales, events and Shop. 100% of our proceeds fund Library programs that provide enrichment to all sections of our diverse population. Your contributions are truly gifts that go on giving. Tricia Morehouse Miller, President BFOL President Tricia Morehouse Miller receives the Friend of the Year Award at KCLS Friends Day, October 17, 2015. Celebrating our Friends In October 2015 KCLS, with the generous support of the KCLS Foundation, hosted KCLS Friends Day. This is a day to honor the contribution of Friends’ Groups throughout the King Country Library System. New KCLS Director Gary Wasdin made the keynote speech, and Elizabeth Castleberry, KCLS Foundation Director, announced the KCLS Foundation Awards. We congratulate our own President Tricia Morehouse Miller who received the Friend of the Year Award with special mention for her outstanding fundraising effort resulting in our first and very successful Silent Auction. Attendees enjoyed great food, entertaining and thought-provoking workshops, and, in this second year of the centenary of the First World War, a fascinating presentation on Women of the Western Front from living history lecturer Tames Alan. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with a little help from our Friends. Julie Rushton, Editor Attendees at KCLS Friends Day. Programs for Teens at the Lake Hills Library Support from the Bellevue Friends of the Library made the following teen programs possible during Fall 2015: Making Mini Comics and Zines with Teens Presenters from Short Run Comics introduced a group of Lake Hills teens to small press mini-comics, zines and art books. Students got to look at a range of publications. Then, through writing and drawing exercises, they created content for their own small press publication. The students came away with an 8-page mini-comic or zine as well as a guide to self-publishing as a reference if they want to send their books out into the world! The new elevator tower (right) should be operational early 2016. Seven Secrets for a Great College Essay At this interactive workshop, presented by Essay Mentors, high school students and their parents dissected and discussed three versions of the same essay: the boring version, the painful version and the fantastic version. This program helped students think about ways to tell memorable stories about themselves that can help them get into college. Progress Report from Lake Hills Village The Lake Hills Village complex is nearing structural completion. The new building just to the right of the elevator tower is finished on the exterior and awaiting an occupancy permit. Once that is issued, the elevator will be signed off and operational. Behind the new elevator tower is the new stair access for the library. Patrons will be able to park on the plaza level. Once the underground parking opens, they can take the elevator up to the library. Ian Chapman, Teen Librarian Norma Eades, Operations Supervisor, Lake Hills Library BFOL volunteer Myrline Billings snapped this picture of Naomi Schafer and Beth Rosania handing out book treats at the epic BFOL Halloween Book Giveaway. Crossroads “Mall-oween” “It was a dark and stormy night…” and Crossroads Mall was a beehive of activity. Treating got under way at 4pm and went on until 6pm. This year, Beth Rosania purchased books from Scholastic, giving us more books for our bucks. We gave away 2,200 books! As usual, some of the children couldn’t believe they were to receive their very own book to keep! Many thanks to those who helped make the event a success: Beth Rosania and Ian Chapman from KCLS, and BFOL volunteers Myrline Billings, Nadine Feinstein, Suzanne Joseph, and yours truly. This year’s Vintage Sale in September grossed $4,350. Thank you to all the volunteers who work hard all year to prepare for this popular sale and to those who put in extra time in the preceding days to make it a great success! Corner Book Shop Holiday Sale a Huge Success! It started out as an idea. Driven by President Tricia Morehouse Miller, the idea became reality. Appeals to local businesses and authors brought in donations of goods and services amounting to thousands of dollars. The Holiday Sale attracted a large number of patrons and grossed $2,241. On the first morning, the sale was wall to wall with shoppers. Many know they will find beautiful books at knock down prices, and they come back every year to buy gifts for family and friends. Patrons who found bargains in our sale went on to find more in the Shop. On the first day of the sale, the shop made more than $300! Thank you to the dedicated volunteers who make it all possible. The committee has already started planning for next year’s special sales. The first is our World Language Sale in March or April. We are grateful both for our loyal patrons who come back year after year and for the generosity of our donors. Recently we received a generous gift of vintage children’s books. What a wonderful way for a parent to remember the child who enjoyed those books– to give the gift of reading to a new generation. Stay warm with a good book this winter and thank you for making the Corner Shop a success! Friday, December 4, the doors opened on a beautiful display of auction items prepared by our volunteers. While they shopped, attendees enjoyed a range of delicious treats including Great Harvest Bread, Beecher’s Cheese, samosas from Oh India, coffee from Top Pot and delectable desserts provided by Bellevue Library staff. All enjoyed the opportunity to relax with friends and sample the delights of the holiday season. To add to the fun, the Holiday Sale was in full swing just along the hallway and achieving record-breaking sales. It was a wonderful finale to the year and made us all glad to be part of BFOL. More than 40 members went home with at least one item. Revenue from the Auction totaled $6,342. New memberships brought in $22. That brings the total revenue from the Auction to $6,364! Thanks to all who helped make this event a success. Well done everyone! Shop Committee Chair Suzanne Joseph and Vice President Carol Stromberg prepare books for the Holiday Sale. The many wonderful items required careful consideration! Wednesday before the Holiday Sale: volunteers price and prepare books. 4 Programs at Bellevue Library BFOL Scholarship News October was the busiest month of 2015 for the Adult Services Librarians in the Bellevue Cluster. We hosted twenty-three programs both inside and outside the library and over half of the programs and classes were sponsored by the Bellevue Friends of the Library. Amongst the offerings made available to our community were two very popular series: World Cinema Salon and the Fall Shakespeare Series. In 2000, BFOL made an endowment to benefit the Information School at the University of Washington. Additional gifts were made between 2000 and 2008 to bring the total up to $50,000. A scholarship is awarded each year, preferably to a student who wants to work in public libraries and, specifically, in the King County Library System. Recently we learned that the market value of the principle was $59,860 in July 2015. The principle of the gift is never used and distributions are made from the gains, so that the scholarship will be awarded in perpetuity. World Cinema Salon: Culture through Film has become an annual series held at the Bellevue Library. It offers attendees the opportunity to explore our diverse community through film. This month long series showcased movies from Japan, Argentina, Iran and Belgium. Each film was followed with a post-screening coversation. Our Shakespeare Series is held in the Spring and the Fall at the Bellevue Library. Presented by Ann Richel Schuh and William Clay, the Fall series focused on Henry VI. Attendees were invited to read and discuss the play. Erin Speaks is the recipient of last year’s award of $2000. She is a MLIS graduate student. University of Washington was her first choice school, and KCLS is her first choice for employment. Currently she works part-time as Library Technical Assistant at Bellevue Library. She hopes to graduate in 2016. We wish her all the best in her studies and in her future career. Book Lover’s Happy Hour Erin Speaks, Scholarship Recipient In December, we held our fourth and final installment of Book Lover’s Happy Hour at 13 Coins in Bellevue. This event has been held quarterly at various locations in the City of Bellevue. It is a great opportunity to come together and hear about new books and mingle with other book lovers. Attendance for this program was been steady and we anticipate that this series will be carried over in to 2016.
