COMPRESSED CREATIVITY
AS EVERY SHORT FILM ENTHUSIAST KNOWS, this format is an art
form in itself. With its possibilities and limitations, it gives film-makers a clearly defined framework within which to practice their art.
And precisely because the films are compressed, it becomes easier
to seize the freedom to experiment with form and to unfold one’s
creativity in new directions.
JOERN UTKILEN TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THIS to the full in his
interpersonal drama Earth over Wind, where an intuitive and associative process is employed to reveal emotions and moods in the
actors. Several pictorial artists have also taken up short films as a
mode of expression, including Jorun Myklebust Syvertsen, who in
Cyrk displays an alternative approach to the depiction of a circus.
EXPERIMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT are not confined to form. In
this year’s catalogue you can also read about two shorts shot in stereoscopic 3D: Northern Lights over Mount Halde directed by Morten
Skallerud and experienced animator Pjort Sapegin’s first live action
short, the Viking film Berserk.
MEANWHILE, THE PRODUCTION OF NORWEGIAN animated shorts
is still extensive. Among these are Julie Engaas`s Blame it on the
seagull, an animated documentary short about a young man who
speaks about his teenage affliction with obsessive thinking and
Tourette syndrome. And Oscar winner Torill Kove has made the
animated fiction film Me and my Moulton, while Kajsa Næss presents
her award-winning animated documentary It`s up to You, about
growing up with a father in jail.
A DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTIC of the Norwegian short films
scene is that established feature film directors, too, often take the
opportunity to make shorts: Lisa Marie Gamlem with Every child is
made of fire, Knut Erik Jensen with Voice of life and Cannes winner
Bobbie Peers with People who fall.
FILMS REFLECT THE PEOPLE THEY ARE about and the people who
make them. The short films in this catalogue are – like most Norwegians – direct, playful and humorous, but do not shirk confrontation
and explorations of the darker side of life. In short, here you will find
life seen through Norwegian eyes.

A hotelroom late at night: a young man is carried from the room unconscious on a stretcher. A
woman and a man remain in the room where all three of them obviously have spent some time
together. Only then, when the ambulance attendants have left with the young man, do the other
two realize that there is a hidden camera in the room and what happened has been recorded.
Born in Oslo in 1965, LENE BERG studied film at Dramatiska
Institutet in Stockholm. She has directed two feature films
En Kvinnas Huvud (1997) and Kopfkino (2012) as well as

contemporary images and inherited ideas; between facts
and clichés; between structures of narration and ideology.

Egress is a narrative set in a gas station in the edgelands of Oslo. The main characters work
at the bottom of the oil company hierarchy and are engulfed in the everyday and the dark
economic and psychological shadows of their society. Egress is the story of a young woman
who deals with her every day work situation with independence and stubbornness in her
work and life in the periphery of the city. The film shows relationships between control and
independence, about labour, class and work, but it is also a poetic film about a socially insecure
edgeland of the city—and about a psychological flipside or cost of the everyday, somewhere
near the bottom of the huge economic ladder of the oil industry which secures Norway’s
stability. Egress’ world is a world of social instability and economic insecurity as part of a
society undergoing major changes. Egress is shot entirely on “location” in Oslo’s Groruddalen,
mainly between an apartment complex and a gas station. The film is an experimental fiction
built up from documentary material which mixes the environment- and character-based to
talk about contemporary society.
