Youth Unity Weekend
Decrease in the Number of Youth Victims
Positive, wholesome mentoring is
happening for youth in the Fair Haven
and Hill communities thanks to Books
Up Guns Down, a Neighborhood
Leadership Grant recipient for three
years running. The group brings
residents and surrounding businesses
of the neighborhoods together through
events that encourage healthy living
and stress the importance of early
intervention and positive role models
in the lives of neighborhood youth.

Street Outreach Workers Build Trust
In 2007, the City of New Haven contracted with New Haven Family Alliance to
implement the Street Outreach Worker Program; since the beginning the program
has received funding from The Community Foundation. Outreach workers with
“street cred” help kids connect to training and jobs. They advocate for those on
probation or parole. Trent Butler (2nd from left, above), an outreach worker in
Newhallville, recently celebrated the high school graduation of one of the first kids
he mentored. A young man who had initially refused Butler’s help, wrote him an
apology from jail. Butler helped, and now the same young man is taking classes at
Gateway Community College.

Attorney Helped Clients with Giving
As a young lawyer, Geoffrey Hecht
taught an evening course through North
Haven’s adult education program
Let’s Talk About the Law. Through
wide-ranging conversations with
students on topics ranging from probate,
negligence, divorce, and the court system,
Hecht tried to humanize the law.
Among his students were Henry and
Lillian Konopacke who attended the
class for several years. And many years
later, Geoff Hecht is now serving as
executor of Henry’s estate.
Henry Konopacke was born on November 8th, 1917 at 145 Nash Street in
New Haven and graduated from Hillhouse High School. A machinist at
Winchester Repeating, Henry met and married Lillian Blair of New Britain
in 1960. Henry and Lillian had a good life in their home in North Haven, traveling
frequently and enjoying their boat with friends until Lillian’s death in 2003. Henry
died in March of this year at the age of 95 and created the Lillian and Henry
Konopacke Fund to “assist nonprofit animal shelters.”

Advisors Gather for Pizza and Conversation
Bankers, financial planners, attorneys and other advisors gathered with Board and
staff members from The Community Foundation and the Jewish Foundation in
early September. Both Foundations work with advisors ensuring their clients’
charitable wishes are fulfilled and offer consultations, special seminars, and onsite
presentations to firms. Advisors are increasingly using www.giveGreater.org® to help
clients learn about and give to local nonprofits and the Learn section of the website
to gain information about our local community categorized in eight interest areas.

Progreso Latino Fund Wants You!
Volunteers Growing Action and Giving Among Latinos
Established in 2003, the Progreso Latino Fund (PLF) promotes the educational and
socio-economic well being of Latinos in the City of New Haven and the region.
The Advisory Committee, now led by Cynthia Rojas (pictured above) and Fernando
Muñiz, is looking for Latinos and others to join them to develop Latino leadership
and to build an equitable community. Engaging more Latinos in local philanthropy
and encouraging giving to PLF, an endowment now worth $280,000, will accelerate
Latino influence in the region’s civic life. Will you join them?

Yale Folks Support Their Community
Partners from the Beginning
7
The Foundation and Yale’s most recent partnership — New Haven Promise — is the
largest ever and continues under Yale’s new President Peter Salovey (pictured above,
with Promise Scholars). The relationship between the two institutions dates back to
February 1928 when Yale graduates Osborne Day and Henry Galpin gathered with
leaders in the President’s Room at Woolsey Hall to hear from the New York
Community Trust on starting a community foundation. These leaders adopted the
Cleveland Foundation’s model of selecting Board members via appointing
authorities; in New Haven’s case, this included Yale. Since then, fourteen Yale
appointees have served the community as a member of The Foundation’s Board.
