Origin of the name
According to the historian Aldo di Ricaldone, Mombaruzzo would
be the “mons Barutii, i.e. the hill owned by the Roman Barus (or
Barutius) who had a an estate there with villa and farm.
Foundation
The age of foundation is uncertain: surely a residential area already existed
at the Roman age and in the following centuries.
Town foundation
Before 1200: on August 1st 1202 the Marquis of Monferrato, Bonifacio,
son of Guglielmo, made a donation to the town of Mombaruzzo, which
therefore already existed.

Population census in 1901: 3,585 inhabitants.
Distinguished citizens
During the age of the Marquisate of Monferrato many local families (e.g.
Prato, Ghisalberti, Chiesa, Brontolo, etc.) operated in the public administration.
A distinguished person of the past years is Giacinto Moriondo (1878-1972)
who launched, at the end of the 19th century, Mombaruzzo’s macaroons.

In the historical archives, rearranged and stocktaken in 1990, are kept
153 documents. There are a lot of collections of resolutions starting from
1633 onwards, even if there are some gaps. Particularly interesting are
the documents dating back to Napoleon's age.
Safeguard area Bosco delle Sorti – La Communa
Establishment: 2001 (L.R. n. 29 dated 14th November 2001)
The first historical documents regarding the area of Cassine’s wood date back to
the 15th century: In 1456 Guglielmo di Monferrato pledged himself to the preservation
of the woods called “Communa”. Geographically, the “Communa” area was clearly
defined in 1599: Everything on the Eastern side near to Carentino, Alessandria and
Gamalerii, towards midday along the street of the Matterhorn Valley, and to the West
of Mombaruzzo’s woods and to the North of the river Ghisone. The area extends
over the hills with vineyards, between 118 and 311 m a.s.l., and along the alluvial
plain and the Apennines. The vocation to viticulture is represented by the winemaking
of high-quality D.O.C. wines such as Brachetto d’Acqui, Dolcetto d’Acqui, Barbera
d’Asti and Barbera del Monferrato, Cortese Dell’Alto Monferrato, Moscato d’Asti, Asti
Spumante.
The vegetation
On the hills and in sunny places the woods are covered mainly by downy oaks
and by turkey oaks; in cooler place there are mainly oaks and chestnut trees
and sometimes also common oaks near to the small rivers. The woods are still
present on the territory previously occupied by the Bosco delle Sorti (300
hectars circa); on the edge of the woods and in other areas there are exotic
plants and weeds like Robinia pseudacacia, Rubus sp. pl., Clematis vitalba,
Solidago gigantea, etc… Among the woods there are also some vineyards,
sown fields and meadows.
The flora
It is important to underline the presence of some protected species like Orchis
morio, Orchis Sambucina, Platanthera chlorantha. In the underwood there are
4 different kinds of genistas: Cytius scoparius, Genista germanica, Cytisus
villosus, the Stenomediterranean variety and the Genista cinerea. In particular,
the Erica arborea is very important, as its preservation is related to the cutting
season.
The Fauna
Some mammals like wild pigs, foxes, European hare, Beech martens, badgers,
hedgehogs, edible dormice, shrews, and some other Chiroptera live here. The
bird population is composed by the redhead and the green woodpecker, the
owl, the buzzard and some other animals, very interesting for hunters, like the
pheasant, the partridge, the quail and the wild duck. In this area there is also
a company for fauna and hunting.
The specialties
Piedmontese agnolotti
They are the typical main course of the Piedmontese cooking and they are very
appreciated also abroad. They are made of a dough filled with the leftovers of
meat. According to the tradition, they are made by hand in traditional houses.
Agnolotti are prepared by very skilled hands and it takes really long time to make
them (two hours and more). Once ready, it is possible to eat agnolotti with a beef
stock or just with some butter or tomato sauce, meat sauce, etc…
Gran Bollito Misto – boiled meat
From the beginning of the 20th century, the “bollito” (boiled meat) has become an
impressive course. It is recommended during meals with all the family, with friends.
Please, do not underestimate it: like many other courses that seems simple and
unexciting, the “bollito” requires some important tricks to be prepared properly.
Fritto misto alla Piemontese – Piedmontese Fritto misto (mixed fry-up)
This dish comes from the ritual of the pig butchery and from the necessity not to
waste anything. Originally the “fritto misto” was composed by blood puddings,
lungs (white fricassee) and liver (black fricassee). Then it has enriched with some
new ingredients and now there are different versions: Traditionally, in the Monferrato
area it is served with fried marrow flowers, steaks and macaroons.
Food from organic farming
Thanks to the lush vegetation of our hills and the organic farming, two farms,
I.C.E.A. certified (Istituto per la certificazione etica e ambientale) are producing:
fruit pickles, marmelades, sauces, wine, dried fruit, honey and its by-products.
The progressive Berta di Roccanivo Distillery in Casalotto di Mombaruzzo began
operating during the 2002 grape harvest, a historical year for this family and
business and for the economic development of the Astigiano wine industry.
The firm was founded in 1947 in Nizza Monferrato, the historical headquarters
where an aging cellar still operates, later moving to Casalotto, where the family
history began and where they built a big solid country house that combines
modern construction techniques and the traditions of the local farming
community. A large structure that was almost immediately extended, built with
a sedate sense of appropriateness on the hills of the vineyard. The steam stills
that transform the grape marc into something strong yet gentle work in a warm
and welcoming atmosphere. This is home to the grappa as well as to the Berta
family, open and comfortable, in which the process is guided with craftsmanship
and with cutting-edge technology. In 2005, following a series of studies designed
to create a modern, technological structure that respected the surrounding
environment, the work on the new aging cellar was completed: 1,800 square
metres of illuminated brick vaults, where barriques and tonneaux stand at rest.
Profoundly linked to tradition, the Berta family bear witness to the ancient
origins of a trade that has accompanied the history and the evolution of
mankind, filling a large room with the systems and equipment used in the past,
partly by the family itself and partly salvaged and purchased over the years;
stills, distillers, condensers and reflux columns, the leading role going to the
original distilling system dating from 1947. For the visitor who wants to explore
the surrounding area and its natural beauties, a park has been created in the
eight hectares around the present site of the distillery, including an ‘educational’
route planted with local fruit trees, olives, an experimental vineyard and a
series of casot – the Astigiano name for the small shacks in which tools and
equipment are stored – now equipped for tasting local salami, cheeses and
the typical sweets, accompanied by wines and distilled products. In expectation
of an increase in the already numerous requests for hospitality from gastronomic
tourism, the Berta family has purchased and refurbished the ancient residence
Villa Prato, a splendid eighteenth-century villa in Mombaruzzo, restored and
opened to the public – six elegantly furnished, comfortable rooms, a tasting
room, a fitness centre in which guests can use the most modern equipment,
including gyms and a swimming pool; a new concept in relais de charme:
fitness and excellent grappa.
ALBA
Alba is the capital of the Langhe, throughout the month of October the town opens
its doors to the National White Truffle Fair, celebrating a tradition rooted in the local
territory and proposing tempting events and projects. Truffle hunters, tourists and
gourmets from all over the world meet again under the towers to enjoy a culinary
rite par excellence, a grating of tuber magnatum pico on the traditional dishes of
the Langhe and Roero, accompanied by the prestigious doc and docg wines of
the area, such as the Barolo and the Barbaresco. There is no denying that the Palio
is a tradition common to many Italian cities, but amongst the most famous towns
for this ancient race is Alba, where donkeys race instead of horses, guaranteeing
inimitable charm and originality. The burlesque and goliardic atmosphere of the
donkey race always colours the first Sunday after the start of the Truffle Fair.
ASTI
The most typical period of the year for Asti is September. Apart from the Palio,
both the Douja d’Or, or national wine festival, and the Festival delle Sagre Astigiane
(village festivals of wine and gastronomy), are held in this month. The Douja d’Or
is particularly well-known: an exhibition and market of prestigious wines, enological
competitions, tastings, conventions and enogastronomic appointments that aim
to spread the understanding of selected enological excellencies from all over
Italy. The Festival delle Sagre Astigiane, which falls on the second weekend of
September, pays tribute to traditional peasant customs, where three thousand
performers represent scenes from peasant life, rituals and bygone trades. At the
end of the parade, Piazza del Palio becomes the largest ‘open-air restaurant’ in
Italy. On the third Sunday of September, the Palio di Asti – mentioned in the Asti
chronicles since 1275, is run in Piazza Alfieri – following an evocative procession
in costume that recalls the medieval magnificence of the town.
CANELLI
The pageant of the Siege is both picturesque and moving. On the third weekend
of June, Canelli is transformed into a seventeenth century town: visitors are
welcomed by thousands of characters in costume, carefully reconstructed
hostelries and taverns offering typical menus, battles, duels in an enthralling and
action-packed atmosphere. In the fourth weekend of September: Canelli – città
del vino, the best of the fare from various Italian regions meets the wines and
gastronomic traditions of Canelli. The culinary festival, organised in the historical
cellars of the most important vineyards and in the most picturesque locations
of the historical town centre, is accompanied by music, folklore and culture. Then
the Fiera di San Martino and the Regional Truffle Fair, held during the second
weekend of November are not to be forgotten. The cellars nominated Cattedrali
sotterranee – subterranean cathedrals – are exceptional, a world heritage that
winds under the hills of the city in a labyrinth of tunnels, passageways and
galleries dug from the tufa. Visits by appointment.
COSTIGLIOLE D’ASTI
The Parco Culturale del Premio Grinzane Cavour was born in 1994 on the suggestion
of Giuliano Soria, a project supported by the Regione Piemonte. Since it was
founded the Grinzane Cavour Prize, one of the most important Italian literary
foundations, has aimed to focus the many cultural forces existing in Piemonte.
The name itself evokes one of the most picturesque historical, rural and literary
areas of Piemonte: a territory to be promoted and safeguarded through the founding
of the Parco Culturale (Cultural Park), which includes a vast area: Langhe, Roero,
Monferrato – and is linked to the work of writers such as Cesare Pavese, Beppe
Fenoglio, Augusto Monti, Giovanni Arpino, Lalla Romano, Davide Lajolo, and many
others. The headquarters of the Park is at the castle of Costigliole d’Asti. The Museo
Nazionale del Territorio, is currently being set up in the castle and will become a
centre for the promotion of the literary, historical, architectural and anthropological
heritage of southern Piemonte. Not to be missed in the month of November is
“Barbera meets the truffle”.
NIZZA
La Corsa delle Botti – the barrel race – of Nizza Monferrato is held between
May and June in the city centre, a race between young men pushing heavy
wine barrels through the streets: in the morning the qualifying heats are run
and in the afternoon the finals. At the same time Monferrato in Tavola is held,
where the local tourist associations present numerous stands with their
specialities. Another important appointment is the ancient Fiera di San Carlo
which includes the ‘Day of the Truffle, the Cardoon and Barbera’, held in the
first week of November. An antique market is held on the third Sunday of every
month; an appointment with history and objects from the past (ornaments,
furniture and much more) that attracts enthusiasts and experts from various
regions. The first Sunday of December sees the Fiera del Bue Grasso the festival
of the excellent and renowned beef of Nizza Monferrato.
S. STEFANO BELBO
Here everything evokes Cesare Pavese, the illustrious son of Santo Stefano
Belbo: the centre with the tiny railway station, the names of the districts, Nuto’s
house, the Albergo dell’Angelo, the museum, located in the picturesque house
where the writer was born. The starting point for a perceptive view of the world
of the writer must be the Study Centre dedicated to him and located in the
fourteenth-century church of San Giacomo e San Cristoforo.

descriptions. The present crest is divided into 6 pieces in Silver and
red, with a golden crowned lion and a red cross on the top right.

ACQUI TERME
The town of Acqui Terme lies close to Mombaruzzo. Its origins date back a long
way, as witnessed by the Roman remains of the aqueduct, one of the symbols
of the city. However, the true heritage of Acqui Terme is the spa waters (hot and
curative) unique throughout Europe, which spring at the centre of the Piazza
della Bollente in a marble kiosk designed by the architect Cerruti, standing in the
very heart of a historical town centre teeming with picturesque corners and
charming walks. Amongst the most important events held in the town are:
– the Fiera di San Guido (July 11th) – the Fiera di Santa Caterina (November 25th)

REGIONE
The festival is celebrated in Mombaruzzo every year on July 22nd. Some nice
events takes place in the following weekend. In the streets of Borgo Castello
(city centre) it is possible to visit the booths where you can taste the best wines
and the food coming from the local tradition. At night, you can enjoy an openair concert or a dramatics surrounded by the marvellous palaces of the historical
centre. Don’t miss the procession on Sunday afternoon: the Patron Saint goes
around in the town followed by the town band and by the amazing show of
the “Cristi”.
Macaroons are sweets made by hand according to an ancient recipe by
Francesco Moriondo which dates back to the 18th century and that is now
typical for Mombaruzzo. At present there are 6 manufacturers: Cav. Vicenzi di
Vicenzi Mario, Moriondo Carlo di Lacqua, Moriondo Virginio di Vicenzi e C.,
Arudi Mirella, Giacobbe Cinzia and Giacobbe Gamalero. Almonds and armellinas
(peach and apricot seeds) are refined and then mixed with sugar and fresh
albumen. The typical “amaretti” come from this dough, made exclusively by
hand. Amaretti are then put on cake tins and baked. They are wrapped one by
one by hand with the typical jagged paper to preserve their softness. The
secret of amaretti is the mix of ingredients: they must be mixed wisely to create
that unmistakeable and unique taste, sweet and bitter. The method for “Amaretto
di Mombaruzzo” has remained unchanged during the years and it is unique
because it does not employ any preservatives or additives. Their particular
taste and their softness make these sweets different from all the other “amaretti”
produced in Piedmont.

The patronal festival
The Winegrower’s cooperative was founded on 30th October 1887 by 20
enlightened winegrowers. It was the first one in Northern Italy. Nowadays there
are more than 200 members, and the total surface of vineyards is about 550
hectars. During the 20th century, the Cantina Sociale was improved and
implemented, and it was part of both Piedmontese and Italian history: it
experienced and overcame the terrible phylloxera epidemic and the subsequent
reconstruction of all vineyards and the recent market crisis. It passes from the
sale by tank to the packaging, always according to the evolution of cellar
technologies thanks to the most modern equipment, without forgetting the
respect of the row material and the natural and traditional process of winemaking.
Nowadays the Cantina Sociale in Mombaruzzo is a well-established company
and a benchmark in the production of precious wines of the Astigiano area like
Barbera d’Asti and Barbera del Monferrato, Moscato d'Asti, Asti Spumante,
Dolcetto, Freisa, Cortese and Brachetto. Its point of sale is modern and wellequipped. Thousands of customers coming from all over the world visit the
Cantina Sociale each year.

Dolcetto
Coming from the North, you arrive in Mombaruzzo in the area where the Variety
Dolcetto is most widespread. Over the centuries Brachetto has been replaced with
Moscato but thanks to its early fruit ripening it is still present on the top of the
windy hills. Dolcetto is a red wine for everyday, it is beloved by winemakers and
by consumers, as it is scarcely acid. Best when young.
Cortese
Cortese is synonimous for dry white wine: The variety gives to this wine particular
organoleptic features, tied to its name. Actually it is fine, light and fragrant. It
is a gentle wine which is suitable also for the production of sparkling wines.
Cortese dell’Alto Monferrato is a leading product even if it does not have the
same market as Gavi has.
Chardonnay
It has less features with respect to the other wines, but is widespread all over the
world as few other varieties are. A very good place for its winegrowing is for sure
the territory in the South of Asti and the Alto Monferrato, where the Chardonnay
is produced in two different versions: young wines and complex wines. The latter
are long lasting wines and they are made in the famous barriques (small barrels
made of oak tree).

STRADA DEL VINO
A vineyard, a wine. Winegrowers and winemakers in Mombaruzzo understand
the great value added of a product, and so do connoisseurs, buyers and enotourists. Mombaruzzo’s wines come from 7 precious vineyards, from which
they take their names. They are well-known for their origin and their international
relevance and they are produced by more than 20 companies that are in the
lead of winemaking. The white and red ground of Monferrato and its sweet hills
are the best place to grow these vineyards – each recalling the name of the
wine produced through its grapes.
Barbera
Barbera has always been successful, thanks to the great demand of this wine.
Bottled in 60 million of parcels (Brunello and Barolo, Italian elite red wines,
together make less than 9 million), Barbera comes from grapes of an average
dimension, with a short and brown stalk, green grape-stalk and medium-large
berries. Generally the grapes reach their full ripeness in the first 10 days of
October. From these grapes it is possible to create two different wines: Barbera
d’Asti and Barbera del Monferrato.
Moscato
The variety Moscato is demanding, it prefers limy soils and it is cold-sensitive.
Geographically speaking, Mombaruzzo is the heaven of Moscato, because it includes
7 regions with a particular vocation for the production of Moscato. The cru are
Bazzana, Salomone, Serra, Casalotto, Gaiano, Brichetto and San Giorgio. Moscato
needs sun for its full ripeness without compromising its sugar content. The grapes
are white Moscato from which generates the classic “Asti”, straw-yellow and sweet.
The Moscato grapes also create the sparkling wine “Asti Spumante”.
Brachetto
20 years ago it was in danger of disappearing. The wine Brachetto had few markets
and was not well known, but it was saved thanks to the tradition of some
winemakers. The variety Brachetto needs particular and continuous care if
compared with other varieties: In the last 20 years there has been a revival of the
Brachetto which is appreciated as a dessert wine and it is also well known in its
land of origin (the territory around Acqui Terme down to the Belbo river). Brachetto
is a rich and fine red wine, it has a balanced sweetness and it is full of aromas.
Freisa
Freisa is a young and sparkling wine. It comes from a variety typical for the
Monferrato area. The grapes have a late fruit ripening, which gives to the wine a
strong and persistent taste. Thanks to its intense bouquet this wine is delicious in
its sweet version.

ASTESANA
The origin of this town is unknown: Its ancientness is shown by its different
names in Ligurian, Celtic and Roman languages, and it is also attested by
the presence of a parish church which dates back to the Roman’s Empire
period. Some certain data regarding the management of this town can be
found in a donation dated 1202 by the Marquis of Monferrato Bonifacio,
who granted to the town the trade rights and the right to income collections
for minor announcements and inheritances among blood and in-law
relatives. The town still exists nowadays. Politically Mombaruzzo has been
part of the Monferrato marquisate since its foundation (in 1906) until its
annexation to Piedmont (1706). Some events followed: particularly its
fortress with the watch-tower (still existing) underwent some sieges,
destructions and slaughters during the centuries. In St. Antonio Abate
church, one of the two main churches of the town, that was built outside
the fortress in the 14th century on some previous buildings, we can find St.
Antonio’s cross (on Greek cross model). This symbol of the homonymous
order, which was founded in 1100 in Vienne-Delfinato to heal the pilgrims
affected by herpes, is another proof of the presence of an hospice or
xenodochium to heal the pilgrims.
In 1322 and 1337 the town confirmed and completed its previous regulations,
by approving its civil and criminal laws. At that time the towns of Castelletto
Molina, Fontanile, Maranzana and Quaranti were under Mombaruzzo’s
territory. In the 16th Century the town had some cadastral maps that are still
kept in the City Hall, together with their following updates of 1796 and 1818.
At the beginning of the 19th century, after Napoleon’s fall and with the Savoy
family back in Piedmont, Mombaruzzo became a magistracy district, which
included also the towns of Carentino, Bruno, Fontanile, Castelletto Molina,
Maranzana and Quaranti.
This magistracy has been abolished recently. The main activity of this area
has always been wine-growing: in 1903 (after an unsuccessful attempt in
1887) the Cantina Sociale (winegrowers’ cooperative) was founded.
It has also some members in the towns nearby. In the last decades some
private companies for wine-making were founded, in order to produce and
sell the various and precious DOC wines. The handicraft production of the
typical Mombaruzzo’s macaroons is really ancient.
In 1960 a rest-home for seniors was built.
