Hunger replaces the slumber By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER [email protected] W HEN ROB THE VIKING, Prevail and Madchild arrive in Kamloops on Saturday, they’re planning on sweeping the crowd at The Max off their feet with a tidal wave of new, hard-hitting, street-style hip-hop. And, for anyone who needs help staying afloat amidst the swells of turbulent waters, Madchild may be able to offer advice. “The highs are great but the lows were an extreme version for me because of what I chose to do with my time. “My friends started giving me these things called Percocets and we were drinking and having fun. It was a blast and life was good. “Only I didn’t realize at the time that I was doing synthetic heroin. “So, I went from Percocet to Oxycontin and it got to the point where I would be staying home, closing the drapes, watching movies and bouncing around in my living room.” Luckily for Madchild, he was thrown a lifesaver by his close friends. “I sort of had an awakening a couple months ago when Prev’ brought these two guys — Tre Nyce and Young Kazh — to my attention,” said Madchild. “They brought the hunger back to me and woke me up out of my slumber.” The two-time Juno winners’ popularity in Canada has been in slow decline since peaking in 2003 after a five-year rise to the top of the charts. But Madchild, who has kicked his addiction to painkillers, is so excited about the new group Swollen has formed with Kuruption Camp (Nyce and Kazh) — called Battle Axe Warriors — he’s A&E: [email protected] Ph: 374-7467 Ext: 222 willing to call his shot. “I feel that Battle Axe Warriors is going to be the Swollen Members of 2003. “That’s my prediction. Now we’ll see if it comes to fruition. “The music we’re making with these kids is so now, is so edgy — it’s grind music and I’m so excited about it.” Life on the road is a new experience for Kuruption Camp. And, for Swollen, watching them relish the experience has brought back memories. “We were nutbags. I mean, we were crazy back then,” Madchild said. “We would walk into hotel rooms and throw things out the windows or walk right into our dressing room, grab the big fruit and vegetable plates and chuck them against the wall.” It may sound hackneyed, but Michael Carroll has a dream. And it’s nothing to laugh at. Well, in his dream it is something to laugh at. Carroll wants to create a comedy club in Kamloops, a venue that will have recording facilities so shows could be taped and sold to the Comedy Central television channel. He’s working with Yuk Yuk’s to bring some of the best funny people to the city, starting on Sunday with the only Canadian to ever win at the Seattle International Comedy Competition and a doctor who moonlights as one very funny guy. Damonde Tschritter (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=XevwOKTfXLk) survived 17 shows over a three-week period in Seattle to take the title, while Russ Kennedy (http://www.drrusskennedy.com/video/ corp.mov) turned to comedy when he started to experience burnout as a general physician. The pair is doing shows throughout the Okanagan this week and will be in Kamloops on Sunday for a 7 p.m. show at Cactus Jack’s Saloon. Two weeks later, Carroll is bringing in Mike Craigdallie and Keith Samoski, who are also on Yuk Yuk’s roster of comedians. Carroll knows a bit about comedy himself, having worked as a singing and dancing waiter on the Rocky Mountaineer Railtour years ago. He’s targeting the tourists who come in on the trains, as well as local people, as a prime audience for the shows and said he’s had great support so far from management of hotels in the city he’s contacted with his plans. “We can support a comedy club in this city,” Carroll said, and he’s looking at the soon-to-be-empty Cactus Jack’s building as a prime location. The bar operation is moving to a new site at the corner of Lansdowne Street and Fifth Avenue. Tickets are $20 and available through Hello Toast at 428 Victoria St or Cactus Jack’s, 417 Seymour St. XSee SWOLLEN B5 video-online] www.kamloopsthisweek.com Go to our website to hear some of our newsroom’s favourite jokes MEANWHILE... buy any pre-owned vehicle at Zimmer AutoGroup we’ll give you a $500 Home Hardware gift card*.
