Lisa McEuen President and CEO, Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services The Be-A-Star award program is one of the many ways we recognize our associates and teams for the countless contributions they make every day to better serve our guests, our campus partners and each other. In Star 1, our regional judging committees have nominated outstanding achievers from both front and back of house associates for the fall 2015 school semester. For our team effort award, we are recognizing accounts that have been accident-free, exceeding our safety program initiatives and ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for all. This year, we have also added a NEW category that specifically recognizes outstanding students employed by Chartwells. We are incredibly proud of our role in preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce and are pleased to share their achievements with you. Finally, I am proud to share an announcement by Andy Lackmann, CEO of Lackmann Culinary Services, honoring the recipients of the 2016 Thomas F. Lackmann Excellence Award. She has a passion for her food, guests and coworkers that presents itself as a smile and a kind word for everyone she encounters. She uses her wonderful personality to interact with everyone in a positive way. Julia established Food Recovery Network’s program on campus and is a champion for sustainability. She works with campus dining and students to set up a food recovery schedule by meticulously planning out the entire process to ensure its success. Fresh, made-from-scratch recipes are Patricia’s specialty because they are made from her heart, not from a can. She prepared and shared 200 tamales for a holiday, commenting, “This is a tradition I do for my family, and I see all of you as part of my family.” Rosie took on significant responsibilities to support the dining program to get it to where it is today. Due to her outstanding performance she was promoted. Her greatest assets include her positive attitude and unwavering willingness to help her coworkers succeed while helping feed students. By joining forces with Student Counseling Services, she is helping students thrive. Tom Buonomano Tom is a student intern at Chartwells supporting marketing efforts. He’s a great student liaison, tech wizard and social media pro. He has even improved the music variety playing in the café while students dine. Charlie Wade Chef Wade is recognized for his incredible spirit and creating amazing meals. He has his own following of students and faculty who visit his station to dine as he addresses them by name. He’s on the Safety Committee and helps his team stay accident-free. Joseph Kraskouskas With over 33 years in foodservice, Joe is considered a true pro managing over $22 million in business. He’s a mentor and helps associates be their best. He moves mountains for student events and is a founding father of Chartwells’ Project Clean Plate. She is a dependable, multi-talented associate who manages all aspects of catering to ensure guests receive deliveries on time, hot and complete. She pitches in wherever needed and can feed 500 students without a blink. Giuliano is a graduate student who joined the Quinnipiac University Dining Services team as a freshman. Even as a busy MBA student he still finds time to work. He looks forward to catering VIP events and providing five-star service with five-star cuisine. Grace Foster Johnson Catering, Pace University Giuliano Torelli Student Associate, Quinnipiac University Cook Kenny is described as the “rock” in SUNY’s campus kitchen and is the foundation of the culinary team. He’s energetic with a great laugh and they depend on his culinary knowledge to ensure guests are dining on the best. Kenny Sinclair Chef Brown is always creating new ways to help change students’ eating habits in a healthy way. His leadership style exudes caring and inclusion warranting recognition for his service and commitment from students and clients. Matthew Brown Cook, SUNY College at Old Westbury Executive Chef, Sullivan County Community College Safety Champion Team Award/Accident-Free Operation Bard College at Simon’s Rock March 2016 | ChartwellsMonthly.com 5 Be-A-Star / Star 1 Winners Mid-Atlantic Region Mary Bryce King Manager, Radford University Virginia Spataro Student Associate, Stockton University Charlene Jones Cook, Radford University Danielle McDowell Director of Dining, Stockton University Through hard work, pursuing a degree in business and raising her family, Bryce is passionate about ensuring the Student Center exceeds standards. She lights up a room and is a born leader. She’ll go that extra mile to help anyone and does it with a smile. Chartwells was seeking a student who’s passionate, reliable, dedicated, wanting to do more and make a difference. Virginia was that person! She knows a lot about guest service and understands how to adapt to the needs of students. Charlene has been cooking up a storm on campus for over 15 years. With her talent and stamina she can dish out upwards of 2,500 meals across three dining periods. She knows how to handle everything and trains new associates so they can succeed like she has. Having 20+ years in foodservice, Danielle collaborated with regional management on the campus’ retail food court grand opening. Her innovations increased sales by 40 percent (combined) resulting in an impressive increase! Safety Champion Team Award/Accident-Free Operation Northern Kentucky University 6 ChartwellsMonthly.com | March 2016 Star 1 Winners / Be-A-Star Southeast Region Jhonco is a true role model to his peers. “Great attitude, respectful and thoughtful” are just a few words that describe his work ethic. As a Marine Reserve and Nova undergraduate, Jhonco said, “I’ve had nothing but a great experience and am grateful for management’s flexibility with my duty schedule.” Jhonco Aumoithe Carole is a second degree nutrition student having already achieved a bachelor’s degree in Public Health. She’s a strong team member providing support to the culinary team overseeing Webtrition, and applying her knowledge to the campus foodservice program. Carole Cavalier Visnu has been an outstanding associate at Chartwells since coming on board two years ago. His eagerness to learn culinary skills resulted in his promotion to a lead position. His passion is truly inspirational and he encourages others to work just as hard. Visnu Morales Traci was a campus dining student supervisor, graduated college at UNF and now manages retail multiple concepts. Her team is frequently complimented for their great work and recently won a campus award where Chick-fil-A was voted as best restaurant two years running. She is great under pressure, a true leader and well liked by students. Linsey Thompson Linsey started out as part-time help on campus and was promoted to the department’s first Student Manager. She is the Logistics & Operations Coordinator working with Chartwells and the Campus Kitchens Project to prevent food waste on campus. Michael McNamara Mike prepares 1,000 meals per day and is a back bone of the culinary team, consistently delivering outstanding service. If Mike is working on a project everyone is assured that he’ll manage to get it done. He keeps the operation functioning as a well-oiled machine. Blake Milakis People are very important to Blake, from all associates on the line to the students and guests checking out at registers. He works hard to keep morale high and encourages an open, honest and fun work environment. As a strong leader, he motivates his team by setting goals and following through. Logan College 8 ChartwellsMonthly.com | March 2016 Star 1 Winners / Be-A-Star Mid-Central Region Even before Tammy was promoted to Production Manager from snack bar attendant and prep cook, she seized the opportunity to demonstrate her skills when the opening came available. Under her watch everything is running smoothly. For a busy college student, concentrating on classes, enjoying extracurricular activities and working on internships, Nathan has been fantastic putting his best foot forward working at Chartwells. His reliability and great smile make him a true asset. Tammy Kaiser Production Manager, Central Community College – Hastings Nathan Lynum Student Associate, Northland College Pam is not only a Star Associate and with campus dining since 2007, she was also featured in the November 2015 edition of Chartwells Monthly on page 4! Read about all of her awards and accomplishments. Pamela Driskill John has been with Chartwells for 42 years + and is a true team member who keeps everything going. He is a master of all trades and fills any void when help is needed. He even cooks for Meal on Wheels donations and deliveries. John Washnieski Barista, Fort Hays State University Assistant Director of Dining Services, Northland College Safety Champion Team Award/Accident-Free Operation Central Community College – Hastings March 2016 | ChartwellsMonthly.com 9 Be-A-Star / Star 1 Winners State of Texas Andrea Lozano Manager, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi Jose Liscano Student Associate, Texas A&M University Galveston Andrea is a great team leader committed to maintaining the highest standards for Starbucks and Chartwells alike. Her dedication to keeping up such high standards have resulted in excellent store inspections and evaluations. She is a shining example of how to manage a successful business. Jose has worked in every area in the operation and currently manages the Expo Station in addition to supporting special catered events. He stands for what is right, and is always giving suggestions on ways to do things better. Jose is known as an ace in the hole. Alexjandra Felix Alexjandra is a strong action cook managing one of the busiest concept stations on campus. She doesn’t slow down and takes pride in her hard work. She’s versatile and there isn’t anything she can’t handle in campus dining. Cody Begg Cody is a confident director surpassing all expectations financially and operationally his first semester. He has a strong pulse on dining. By developing trust among his team through open communications, he is helping to develop their careers that help manage the business. Lackmann Excellence Award Recipients T his award is dedicated to the memory of my father and Lackmann Culinary Services’ founder, Thomas F. Lackmann, and founded upon our company’s values of Quality, Integrity, Trust and Teamwork. The Award recognizes team members who exemplify the founding values in their work style and have consistently demonstrated them throughout their careers. I am proud to announce on behalf of Lackmann Culinary Services, that Stephanie Farino and Bari Marchfeld are this year’s recipients of the Thomas F. Lackmann Excellence Award. Stephanie and Bari started with Lackmann and have been promoted to larger roles within Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services. I am truly proud that they will use their experience and build upon their capabilities in support of Chartwells in their new positions. The honorees received a pineapple-shaped crystal award which is an international symbol of hospitality. Our family chose this symbol because our dad was the definition of hospitality. He was very humble yet had a resilient drive to continuously challenge himself regardless of any project. He showed that he cared about everyone in the company and treated every person he met like family. He wanted to instill these virtues and values in his staff while also encouraging the importance of continuous learning for success. Bari Marchfeld & Stephanie Farino Recipients of the Thomas F. Lackmann Excellence Award Stephanie and Bari join the distinguished list of past honorees including Shelley Canonico, Jose Rodriguez, Patti Graham, Edna Castillo, Kelly Heefner and Jennifer Moschitta. Our winners’ accomplishments truly exemplify everything that my father represented. Each Thomas F. Lackmann Excellence Award recipient has not only made Lackmann Culinary Services a better company overall, but they have made me a better leader and better person as well.
