ANNUAL
SCOTTISH T·ERRIER
THE SCOTTISH Terrier Club of
America had originally planned to
hold a spring Specialty show in May,
before the Morris and Essex show, but
since that event was cancelled, they
have decided to accept the invitation
of the Westchester Kennel Club, and
consider the classes at this event as
its Specialty show. This show, of
course, will be in the fall.
The Club's annual meeting was held
during the Westminster period, at
which time the annual trophies were
presented, and the following officers
and Governors were elected: President, Mrs. Beatrice G. Va il ; Vice
President, Robert J. McLaughlin;
Secretary, Mrs. John V. Kelly ; Treasurer, Henry D. Israel ; Delegate to
the A.K .C. Charles H . Werber, Jr ;
Governor-at-Large, Charles C. Stalter ; Governors : Mrs. Edw. F . Moloney, Mrs. T . H . Snethen, Alan Sparks
and Mrs. W. Sheldon Winans.
The Scottish Terrier Club of Chicago will again hold a Specialty show
in conjunction with the Western
Specialties event in November, also a
Puppy Sweepstakes. There should be

out of the famous Ch. Blanart Barcarolle, as is Mrs. Beatrice Vail's Ch.

was Best of Breed at the STCA Specialty in September. Blanart owns fourteen bitches, and all of them are
daughters or granddaughters of Barcarolle. Most of these will be bred
to sons of Barcarolle. This is Blanart's

Rapids, Iowa, writes they have been
marking time this past year, but are
now resuming breeding operations.
They have bred their Ch. Mac's Welton Jean to Charles McKinven's All
Scotch, a son of Ch. Midnight Raider
out of a Ch. Mac's Welton Tweed
bitch. They are planning to breed
two young bitches - Mac's Welton
Lindy which has eleven points, and
Mac's Welton Bit O'Heather to outstanding sires. 'rheir Ch. Mac's Welton Jean, which is pictured, was one
of three champions sired by Solitaire
out of his first three litters after his
arrival in this country. Jean's dam,
Mac's Welton Pixie Bairn will be remembered as Best in Show at Pontiac
a few years· back.
Congratulations to W . R. Wood,
who at the annual meeting of the
STCA was awarded the Francis G.
Lloyd Memorial Trophy with his Ch.
Lynwood Angus. Mr. Wood also received the Edgerstoune Best of Breed
trophy. Two sons of Angus and six
of his daughters are now being shown
and doing some nice winning. At
present Angus is with James Murphy

a huge local entry, as so many puppies
which are coming up in the area will
be eligible.
Frances Gann on writes there is a
fine crop of Ch. Blanart Barrister
puppies in the Midwest. Since owning Barrister, she has shown him
three times - at Fort Wayne, Muncie
and Marion. He was Best of Breed at
all three shows, second in the group
at Fort Wayne, winning it at Muncie.
The Washington State Scottish
Terrier Club plans to have its annual

part of July. They have secured the

breeding program , and to date it has
been most successful. Three Blanartbred Champions finished in 1953,
three in 1952, four in 1951 and one in
1949.
Barcarolle and her two litter brothers, Blanart Buccaneer and Blanart
Brigadier, number eighteen champions among their many winning children and grandchildren since 1950.
Barcarolle is the dam of six champions, with Bolero well on the way to
the title. We believe the present
record for a Scottie bitch as far as
producing champions goes, is a tie
between American Ch. Shieling's
Gracious and Eng. Ch. Annie Laurie,
both of which were the dam of seven
champions.
W. M. Singleton of England, who
judged Scotties at Westminster, met
with members and guests of the Scottish Terrier Breeders Association at
the Henry Hudson Hotel on Tuesday
afternoon, February 9th. A round
table discussion of questions and
answers was most enjoyable and enlightening. Although Mr. Singleton
expressed a strong preference for
soundness in his winners, he joined
many present-day judges in deploring the absence of good expression as
designated by the incorrect eyes and
ears of many presen t -day dogs.

he was Best of Breed and then topped
the Terrier group. His second time

TWO DECADES ago, Scottish Terriers, bolstered by the name and
fame of the British sires, Champions
Heather Necessity and A 1 b our n e
Barty, rode a crest of popularity in
America. Hundreds of the sons and
daughters of these dogs were imported amid great ballyhoo but the
majority remained just registered
names in the stud books. Only the
passage of time has sorted them out
and separated the gold from the
dross, the producers from the nonproducers, the !asters from those of
transient glory. Of the handful of
Necessity sons, other than Ambition
and Fashion Hint, who sired Champions, only the followin g three headed
(earlier litter ) to the very important
British champion, Heather Ambition.
Laddie's dam, Henshaw's Gloaming,
was a daughter of America's top show
dog of the day, Br. and Am. Ch.
Heather Reveller, and Reveller's dam
was Skerne Scotch Lass who was also
t he dam of Necessity. Reveller himself sired few champions and his bid
for lasting fame appears to be dependent on this daughter who, bred by
Mrs. Henshaw and sold by her to
John Hillman at the age of one year,
proved to be his greatest breeding investment. Her puppies were all outstanding and had she lived to fulfill
her promise as a brood matron Cshe

Ch. Sandhey's Silvertip thru his son
Am. Ch. Gaisgill Nosegay, Am. Ch.
Drum Major of Docken, and Br. and
Am. Ch. Heather Essential of Hitofa.
Of the three, the last named is the
only one who persists in strength today , and this strength rests principally upon the sturdy shoulders of a remarkable son, Am. Ch. Hillcote Laddie.
Laddie , whelped in December 1935,
was bred for .greatness, with strong
close links to both Necessity and
Barty. Bear in mind that his sire,
Heather Essential, was a brother
age of four ) her greatness might have
become breed history. T hree of her
eight male puppies became Champions, including Laddie and a half
brother, Hillcote Destiny, who made
an outstanding show record in 1938.
Bred in Mr. Hillman's comparative~

show career was adequate but not
spectacular. Very little attention and
publicity were his lot until his strikingly handsome black-masted silver

this month's front cover. It is a
really outstanding Wheaten, aptly
named Champion K inclaven Corn
Silk, and we believe the only Wheaten
to complete its title at strictly eastern
shows.
Corn Silk is a son of Ch. Bramshire
Blazing Son out of Ch. Kinclaven
Ever Amber and he is owned by Mrs.
John T. Bilder of Lafayette Hill Pennsylvania, who hopes, through him to
breed Wheatens which will be a real
threat in show rings all over this
country.
That Corn Silk himself has everything he needs to win at top shows
is attested by the fact that he won
Majors at Rumson under E. Johnston;
Reading under Mrs. Beatrice Vail and
he finished at Brooklyn in November
under Wm. Kendrick with Best of
Winners.
Corn Silk was handled to his Championship by A. C. Ayers of Lancaster,
Pa., and he is at stud at Mr. Ayers'
kennels. He sires wheatens, brindles
and blacks, and his puppies are showing real Scotty characteristics and
quality.

Mrs. Casperz is correct when she .•
states that Am erica is a big country •
and she would be correct in stating
that we do have m ore Scottish Terriers per square mile than there are
in the British Isles. In the first eleven
months of 1953, 2711 Scotties were
registered with the American Kennel
Club and in a like period in England
only 1543 were registered. America,
due to its tremendous size, must have
more Championship shows than England but that does not mean that the
quality is necessarily inferior.
A check of our shows clearly indicates that our American-bred Champions do a very good job of holding
. their own with British imports many
of which come over with a British
Championship title and considerable
fanfare as to their winnings in their
own country. Mr. Singleton, the
noted British authority who judged
Scotties at the recent Westminster
show placed an American-bred Best
of Breed and he stated in an English
Journal, "collectively I'd say they
(American-breds ) are as good as in
England".
Every country, where breeding and
exhibiting pure-bred dogs is a major
sport, has its share of good and mediocre dogs with a sprinkling of those
which fall into the category of being
considered "great". Few people in
any country have enough first-hand
knowledge of the overall picture of
another Country's Champions to place
a label on them, so perhaps it would
be well to remember that things are
not always what they seem.

con tinuin g their breeding program,
principally on Relgalf bloodlines.
Their Strathkirk Sonnet finished in
less than two months, starting out
Labor Day with a Reserve at the
Michigan Specialty, and finishing at
Mid-Kentucky on November 1st. Sonnet's sire, Ch. Relgalf Rebel Dictator
died during the year, but leaves several promising offspring. Among them
is the Kochs' Strathkirk's Spice,
which as a puppy won several Reserves and is being prepared for competition this spring. It is interesting
that last fall the Kochs exhibited
three generations of bitches at the
Fort Sackville event. Their seven
year old Ch. Relgalf Ream took Best
of Breed and fourt h in the group,
her daughter Souvenir, and gr anddaughter Spice, each took their class,
Souvenir placing Reserve to Sonnet.
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Kinney of Chattanooga, write they have had a busy
year. In addition to finishing their
Ch. Kinnie's Bruce, the first ownerfinished champion in Chattanooga,
they established their Kinnie's Kennels on a six acre tract thirteen miles
out of the city. They are hoping that
Bruce's son, Kinnie's Kirk will do well
at t he late spring shows. The Kinneys' latest addition to their kennel
is Mar-Gene's Tinker Toy, a daughter
of Ch. Friendship Farm Diplomat out
of Fulluvit First Honor. They drove
to South Carolina to pick her from
a lovely litter, of which the E. V.
Chisolms who own the Mar-Gene
K ennels are very proud.
David Henderson of Bellaire, Texas,
writes he has just purchased a
wheaten puppy, Clinch Mt. Bit of

them within three generations.
The sons who have carried his line
most successfully are th e champions,
Mac's Welton Tweed, Wedgwood
Andy O'Briarcroft, Briarcroft Dandy,
Spitfire's Hillcote Laddie, Bittersweet
Spring Robin, and Deephaven Warspite. The latter, another handsome
silver brindle, is probably the best
known of them all because of his
outstanding show career in keenest
eastern competition. Unfortunately
for the male line of descent, Warspite
is producing thru his daughters, notably three litter sisters who have contributed eight champions: Marlu
Black Beauty, Marlu Lady May (dam
of Ch. Marlu Clincher, winner of six
Specialty shows in 1953 ) and Marlu
Scotch Belle. Altho Laddie's bloodlines are present in dozens of kennels
from coast to coast only the following
few are using them as an integral
part of their breeding programs:
Carnation Farms, Glenby, Mac's Welton, Spitfire, Amerscot and Scotbart.
Wise were the breeders who doubled
on Laddie's bloodlines, thus concentrating his quality thru both line and
family. Only thru close breeding,

with resultant concentration of his
genes for type and quality, can the
influence of a super-sire be a factor
in the establishment of a lasting heritage. Hillcote Laddie's is the story
of a great sire who was almost overlooked but who proved his greatness
with a minimum of publicity and opportunity. His bloodlines are here it is up to the fortunate breeders who
have them to hold his qualities of intelligence, showmanship , style, and
personality by using them wisely.
