Sports and style have been
playing partners since man
first pulled on a uniform.
(The ancient Greeks used to
compete naked, so the uni
was real progress.) Over
time, athletic apparel and
street clothes blended—
athletes became fashionable, and fashion became
sporty. Today the two
camps draw mutual inspiration; our spring Guide to
Style is devoted to exploring
the connection. Inside
you’ll earn your new-school
varsity jacket and learn how
to dress up a lowly pair of
sweatpants. You’ll also
learn which cologne to buy,
why perforated leather has
those holes, and (finally!)
what the bezel on your dive
watch actually does.

THE VARSITY JACKET
COMES OFF THE BENCH
`In school, the
JOSHUA SCOTT
varsity jacket is earned
through athletic glory
and draped around the
shoulders of a comely
cheerleader. Then, after
graduation, it’s stored
in a closet with other
teenage memorabilia.
Keep it there. But this
spring, it’s time to dust
off the concept: Brands
large and small, from
Tommy Hilfiger to Simon
Spurr, are offering stylish
reinterpretations of these
all-American jackets. It
makes sense that designers would revisit such an
iconic style in this menswear era of prep and
Americana, says Durand
Guion, vice president of
men’s fashion for Macy’s.
“And the element of
sports attached to the
trend makes this an easy
thing for men to adopt.”

When March arrives,
`
you can count on clocks springing forward and nautical
styles coming back. Even if
you’d rather walk the plank
than wear precious sailor
stripes, you can still put your
own spin on the trend.
Try nontraditional
colors. This cotton peacoat,
rendered in deep olive rather
than classic navy, references
the style without feeling like
a costume.
Think outside the docks.
As an alternative to the typical
boatneck, unexpected shapes
like this shawl collar add a
sophisticated, masculine vibe.
More is too much.
No matter what the trend,
restrain yourself from similarly
themed pieces. Complete this
look with boat shoes or a subtle
rope bracelet—but never both.

Surfers know style. Wear these
killer board shorts in the waves or,
après-surf, with a pair of the boat
shoes shown on this page.
When Angelo Bonati first saw the
72-foot Eilean in 2006, the boat
was grounded in Antigua—a far
cry from her glory days as the
backdrop for Duran Duran’s “Rio”
video. But Bonati, CEO of the luxury watch
manufacturer Panerai and a SAILING enthusiast,
also saw Eilean’s potential. Cut to 2011 and the
Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. Aboard the
newly restored Eilean, Bonati and crew hoped
to sail to victory. They didn’t; the race was
canceled due to lack of wind. But Bonati and
his team still had the yacht—and the joy gained
from giving this classic beauty a second life.

When you’re under water with a finite amount of oxygen in your tank, a bezel—the rotating frame of some sport
`
watches—is more than a decorative touch. Divers know to align the bezel’s arrow with the minute hand so they can easily see how long they’ve been under water. Nowadays, other dive-watch signatures—like black rubber straps, oversize
cases, large numbers, luminous hour markers, and screw-down crowns—characterize everyday timepieces. Nondivers
can use them to plot an exit strategy from a bad date, time dinner on the stove, or discreetly monitor the time during
your boss’s excruciating PowerPoint presentation. With a dive watch, you always know when you can come up for air.

The most infamous decree in
motor sports, Nascar’s Rule
12-1, states that drivers may be
punished for any act determined
to be “detrimental to stock-car
racing.” Fightin’ in the infield? Cussin’ in victory
lane? You, sir, are in violation of Rule 12-1.
We say good. Sure, the statute is vague. But it
essentially means “Don’t be a jackass.” We’d
like to invoke this rule whenever sanctimonious
politicians are caught in trysts. The next time
a guy answers his phone during dinner, abruptly
cancels long-standing plans, or suggests a
keg stand, we reserve the right to call a 12-1.

shoe company ran TV ads
showing women playing
basketball in high heels.
The idea: The shoes were
so comfortable you could
do anything in them.
Today, men’s dress shoes
are in on the act.
Cole Haan, for example,
began putting Nike Air
Technology into its dress

Hit the Links
We support sports-inspired cuff links, as long as you play by the rules. The metal
should match your belt buckle as well as your watch, and you should limit any other
jewelry lest the various blings compete with one another. For the same reason, the
more complicated your cuff links, the simpler you should keep your shirt pattern.
Finally, link up with something subtle. Cuff links should not distract from your overall
look. If you suspect that a particular set is more weird than whimsical, it probably is.

LESSONS FROM THE
GAMES WE PLAY
Now that BASEBALL finally has
a meaningful steroid policy, we
may never see 70 homers again.
We should accept that, just as
we should embrace fuel-efficient
cars (even if they don’t go vroom) and women
who look like real women (as opposed to breastimplanted Barbie dolls). Technology gives
us the ability to supersize nearly everything,
including our bodies, even if the result involves
a dirty trick. But there’s a line between utterly
massive and big enough. Baseball eventually
found it. We might all pause in our daily lives
and be sure we’re on the right side too.

Kickin’ It
Old School
The saddle shoe appeared in 1906,
primarily for tennis and squash players
who needed extra support for lateral
movement; golfers adopted a version
with spikes in the 1920s. Decades later,
in 1950, the Adidas Samba gave soccer
players a gum sole for increased traction.
And leather motocross boots were
originally designed to protect a rider’s
feet and shins from the rocks and rubble
that ricochet from the road. All three
styles abide today.

Lacoste, either. So in 1927
the Frenchman designed a
cotton pique short-sleeved

According to the USGA’s 208-page
Rules of Golf, the game of GOLF
“is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee
or umpire.” This means golfers
call penalties on themselves, even when the
tiniest infraction can cost them a tournament.
In fact, that very thing happened to pro Brian
Davis in 2010, when he conceded a playoff to
Jim Furyk after his club accidentally brushed
a weed. While the world does not need more
nitpicky rules like the USGA’s, it does need
more honorable men like Davis, who would
rather do what is right than what is profitable.

briefs are bunching. And no one knows this better than
British soccer icon David Beckham. Duly motivated,
he joined forces with Swedish retailer H&M to create a
new line of briefs, boxers, and undershirts. The David
Beckham Bodywear for H&M collection, which launches
in February, also includes pajamas, long johns, Henleys,
and T-shirts, all of them designed with sleek cuts and
minimal branding. “I wanted the fit to be perfect, and that
takes a lot of trial and testing,” Beckham says. “The pieces
have to retain their shape and stand the test of time.
That was really important to me.”
