It was four pages long, printed in black and white, and included articles written by a staff of one: the magazine’s editor, Jimmy Swaggart. He chose not to waste precious print space explaining why or how the magazine came to be. Instead, Brother Swaggart opened with an editor’s note entitled “God Can,” and a conversation started between the evangelist and his readers that has lasted nearly half a century. The first issue of The Evangelist (left) appeared in October 1970. 45 years later, The Evangelist continues to be the Voice of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. After 15 years of full-time ministry, the start of a monthly magazine seemed a natural step forward in meeting the mission of world evangelism. The publication offered a way for Brother Swaggart to share the gospel, announce his rigorous meeting schedule, and offer the music and messages that were quickly growing in demand. is the greatest cook in the world. Of course, this is the life of an evangelist. I know many people think it is glamorous and to be sure, it does have so many rewarding times, but what the people never see is the hard work and labor that goes into it, and this must come if you are to have what God wants you to have. Readers claim that his conversational writing style makes them feel as if Brother Swaggart is speaking directly to them — one-on-one — as he shares with his audience the challenges, joys, and progress of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. The following clip from his first printed article illustrates that style: Since that writing, Brother Swaggart has penned more than 1,000 articles for The Evangelist — articles he felt were helpful and needful to the body of Christ, given by the Lord and full of truth. Brother Bouton and I have just arrived home from Evansville, Indiana. I was counting it up the other day, and we have been home only a total of eight days for the entire summer. It is never easy to stay away from your family, but we must do what the Master says, especially because the time is so short. I think the very first thing I wanted to do when I arrived home was to eat some of my wife’s cooking. The more I stay away, the more I think she One of the most popular sections of the magazine is Brother Swaggart’s monthly article entitled, “From Me To You.” In April 1999, he used this space to explain some of his own thoughts regarding his choice of content for the magazine. He wrote: I received a note the other day from a dear brother about the main article in The Evangelist each month. He said, “Brother Swaggart, your main article in The Evangelist each month is a little bit too involved, and the magazine would be much better if you put in more short human-interest stories.” He went on to say, “More people will read it, with most not taking the time to read your involved articles.” He is exactly right! In fact, most Christians little read the Bible for that very reason. They say it is too involved, that they cannot understand it, or whatever the excuse may be. However, does that mean that the Lord should have written it differently? The brother is right in that more people would read short humaninterest articles. He is also correct when he states that most will not read our articles because they are too involved and strictly on the Scripture. So, I have a choice — I can write what the people want, or I can write what they need. The truth is, you need to read these articles each month in The Evangelist, even though they are involved and, at times, quite heavy, one might say. Paul said this: “For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by [ CONTINUED ON PAGE 39] ONE MINISTRY. ONE MESSAGE. 60 YEARS. Brother Swaggart, Are Homosexuals Born That Way? part ii By Jimmy Swaggart Colossians 2:14-15 — “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; and having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” And once again I say, man’s solution is Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and that alone! In other words, there is no other answer. CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED THE ONLY ANSWER IS Jesus Christ and what He did for us at the Cross (Rom. 6:1-14; 8:1-2, 11; I Cor. 1:17-18, 23; 2:2; Col. 2:14-15). As we have previously said, and will continue to say over and over again, if, in fact, man has the answer for these problems in the realm of psychoanalysis, or any other way, Jesus Christ made an unnecessary trip down to this sinbenighted world to die on Calvary, thereby, paying a terrible price to redeem humanity. Once again I remind the reader, man’s problem is sin, not environment, association, or education, even though these things certainly may have some affect. And once again I say, man’s solution is Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and that alone! In other words, there is no other answer. Also, I remind the reader, Jesus needs no help in this capacity, for, in effect, He has already effected the cure, which is His shed blood coupled with His power. For the church to look elsewhere, to do otherwise, to think otherwise, is not just sin, but actually, rank, raw, ignominious blasphemy. ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLE? The word unseemly as used in Romans 1:27, in the Greek is aschemosune, and means “want of form, disfigurement, deformed, one’s nakedness, shame.” It does not matter that modern man may attempt to label homosexuality as merely an 6 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST “alternative lifestyle,” insinuating that there is nothing wrong with this direction, the truth is the opposite, and irrespective of what type of erroneous laws that Congress may make, or the Supreme Court may judge. Man’s law in no way changes God’s laws, i.e., that which God has deemed will happen! The awful results will always come about, irrespective of how much man may attempt to apply a seal of approval to this issue, or any other issue pertaining to life and godliness. ERROR The phrase, “And receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet,” refers to the penalty that is attached to wrongdoing, and if persisted, will always be brought about. Recompense in the Greek is antimisthian, and means “a reward given in compensation, requital, recompense.” The word here refers to that natural result of their sin which pays them back for what they have done. The evil consequences are necessary as ordained by divine law. When one violates the laws of nature (God), one must pay the price. The word error in the Greek is palne and means “a wandering, roving, or wrong action.” It carries the idea of an individual leaving the natural instincts created by God and forcing those instincts into perversion. The wandering, roving, wrong action steadily gets worse and worse, with the error becoming more and more pronounced. THE JIMMY SWAGGART An excellent example is the many homosexuals and lesbians who have had their mental, emotional, and even physical appearances changed, and for the worst. In other words, their homosexuality shows in their mannerisms, which again are unnatural and repulsive. PRICELESS CORNER We have set aside this corner of The Evangelist to show God’s Plan of Salvation. If you are unsure where you will go when you die, please listen to what God has said in His Word: FIRST: GOD LOVES YOU! “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life” (Jn. 3:16). THE SIN OF HOMOSEXUALITY SECOND: MAN IS A SINNER, AND SIN HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM GOD The Bible has much to say about this sin, as it does all sin. “For there is not a just man upon Earth, that doeth good and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20). Historically, according to the Bible, homosexual behavior was linked with idolatrous cult prostitution (I Ki. 14:24; 15:12; 22:46). However, the stern warning against this practice is included in Levitical law, and upheld under the new covenant as well, even respecting these passages in Romans (Lev. 18:22; 20:13). In this chapter, to which we have already alluded, Paul greatly condemns homosexual acts — lesbian as well as male — putting them in the same breath, in a sense, as idolatry. However, his theological canvas is broader than the expression of the homosexual act regarding idolatry, but is rather held up as the terrible exchange fallen man has made in departing from his Creator’s intention. Seen from this angle, every homosexual act is unnatural, not so much because it cuts across the individual’s natural sexual orientation, or even infringes Old Testament law, which it definitely does, but rather because it flies in the face of God’s creation plan for human sexual expression. OTHER WARNINGS “For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). THIRD: JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God ...” (I Pet. 3:18). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). FOURTH: YOU MUST RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR Jesus calls this experience the new birth. He told Nicodemus: “... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3). We invite you now to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name” (Jn. 1:12). WE BELIEVE: »»The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God (Ps. 119; Mat. 4:4; Lk. 24:27). »»There is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (I Jn. 5:7). Paul makes two more references to homosexual practices in other epistles. Both occur in lists of banned activities and strike the same condemnatory note. In I Corinthians 6:9, practicing homosexuals are included among the unrighteous who will not inherit the kingdom of God; however, Paul then adds a redemptive note, saying, “And such were some of you” (I Cor. 6:11). In other words, the Lord saved these once practicing homosexuals, cleansing them of their sin, and made them new creations in Christ Jesus. The idea is, as should be obvious, that the Lord does not save in sin, but from sin. A newsman asked me once if God would save homosexuals. My answer to him was very clear and concise. I said, “Yes, God will save homosexuals, or anyone who comes to Him for that matter. Actually, that is the very reason Jesus came and died on Calvary.” “However,” I quickly added, “But that means they will have to give up their sin of homosexuality, just as the drunkard gives up his drink,” etc. In I Timothy 1:10, Paul again speaks of the sin of homosexuality, and by inference, declares the lost condition of those who practice this sin as well as other sins. It has been suggested that the meaning of arsenikoites in I Corinthians 6:9 and I Timothy 1:10 may be restricted to that of “male prostitute.” However, Greek linguistic evidence to support this view is lacking. It is beyond reasonable doubt that Paul intended to condemn homosexual conduct in any capacity, but not homosexual people. As Creator, Lawgiver, and King, the Lord’s condemnation of such behavior is absolutely plain, but yet He loves the sinner. Following are some questions respecting homosexuality with some answers, which hopefully will be helpful. [CONTINUED ON PAGE 8] »»In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin Birth, in His Sinless Life, in His Miracles, in His Vicarious and atoning Death, in His Bodily Resurrection, in His Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this Earth in Power and Glory to rule a thousand years (Jn. 1:1-4; Eph. 2:13-18; Rev., Chpts. 19-20). »»In the Blessed Hope — the Rapture of the Church at Christ’s Coming (I Thess. 4:13-18). »»The only means of being cleansed from sin is through Repentance and Faith in the Precious Blood of Christ (Rom. 5:1; Eph. 2:8-9, 13-18). »»Regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal Salvation (Jn. 3:5-8; Titus 3:5). »»The Redemptive Work of Christ on the Cross provides Healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer (Ex. 15:25-26; James 5:14-15; I Pet. 2:24). »»The Baptism with the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4 is given to Believers who ask for it (Acts 2:4; 10:44-46; 19:1-7). »»In the Sanctifying Power of the Holy Spirit by Whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life (Rom. 6:3-14; 8:1-2, 11). »»In the Resurrection of both the saved and the lost: the one to Everlasting Life and the other to everlasting damnation (Rev. 20:5-6, 11-15). Pray this prayer and mean it with all of your heart: “Dear “ Lord Jesus, I now realize that I am a sinner. I accept the fact that You died for me on the rugged Cross of Calvary. I now open my heart’s door and receive You as Saviour and Lord of my life. Please take full control of me and help me to be the kind of Christian You want me to be. Amen.” If you prayed this prayer in all sincerity, you are now a Child of God. So that we might rejoice with you, we invite you to fill out this coupon and mail it to Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, P.O. NAME ADDRESS CITY STATE/PROVZIP DATE OF DECISION AGE JIMMY SWAGGART [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7] ARE HOMOSEXUALS BORN THAT WAY? In a word, No! While it is true that the seed of original sin carries with it every type of deviation, aberration, perversion, and wrongdoing, the homosexual cannot claim to have been born that way any more than the drunkard, gambler, killer, etc. However, I think it correct to say that the gene pool which constitutes the character and personality make up of every individual is more predisposed toward some aberrations in certain persons than others. In the spiritual sense, the perverted or abnormal number of genes in any particular direction is not the cause of these situations, but rather the results. The genes are that way because of man’s fallen condition in a spiritual sense. So, even if scientists one day can find a way to control the genes, the problem will still not be solved, because that which feeds the genes, which is the soul and the spirit of man, cannot be changed by medical or psychological procedures, but only by the power of God. It is called the new birth, and is referred to in the Word of God as regeneration. The actual passage says, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). The word regeneration in the Greek text is plaiggenesia, and means “once more or again,” in other words, “re-gened.” The Lord Jesus Christ and He alone can change the person, i.e., re-gene the individual, hence, regeneration. To further prove the point, when identical twins are born, the gene pool is identical, at least to a greater degree, in these twins. At times one has become a homosexual, while the other one did not. If, in fact, they were born that way, if one was homosexual, the other would be likewise. The very fact that both seldom turn out to be that way proves that they are not born in that manner. Again we stated, that even though there are greater propensities toward certain proclivities in some people than in others, does not mean the thing is set in concrete, but only that there is a lean toward a certain direction. In fact, the Lord does not condemn the sinner for what he is, but rather for refusing to accept God’s way out of the situation, which is the salvation afforded by Christ at Calvary. That goes for every sinner, homosexuals included! When a person comes to Christ, he leaves something (the old lifestyle), and comes to something, and more particularly to someone, the Lord Jesus Christ. As such, we take upon ourselves, and by His help, His lifestyle. WILL PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING HELP THE HOMOSEXUAL? Biblical counseling will help, but not psychological counseling. The problem is spiritual, and the Bible alone deals with such. Biblical counseling will simply direct the person to the Lord Jesus Christ and the price that He paid at Calvary, so that one may be saved. It must be understood, that Jesus atoned for every sin at the Cross. This means that Satan and all of his cohorts of darkness were defeated at Calvary (Col. 2:14-15). Sin is that which gives Satan the legal right to hold man in bondage. With all sin atoned, he has no more right to do such. That being the case, how is it that he keeps most of the world in bondage? WILL GOD SAVE HOMOSEXUALS? Actually, this is a question we have already answered. Yes, the Lord will save homosexuals, or anyone who comes to Him, irrespective as to who or what they may be. That is the very reason Jesus came to this world, “to save sinners” (I Cor. 6:9-12). However, the homosexual, upon coming to Christ, must abandon the former lifestyle immediately, and that goes for the drunk, gambler, or anyone for that matter. He does such simply because men will not take advantage of what Christ has done for us at Calvary. Untold millions in the world are lost without God, but it’s because they will not avail themselves of the opportunity of accepting Christ. Regrettably, many in the church, if not most, fall into the same category. They do not understand that it was at the Cross that all victory was won. This means that the Cross of Christ must ever be made the object of our faith (Rom. 6:1-14; 8:1-2, 11; I Cor. 1:1718, 23; 2:2; Gal., Chpt. 5; 6:14; Eph. 2:13-18; Col. 2:14-15). When the believer places his faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, and maintains his faith exclusively in Christ and the Cross, the Holy Spirit, [CONTINUED ON PAGE 10] 8 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST FULL-POWER STATIONS Baton Rouge, LA............................. 88.5 (WJFM) Covering parts of Southern Louisiana Crete, IL........................................... 88.1 (WBMF) Covering South Chicago and Chicago Heights Lake Village, AR/Greenville, MS......95.9 (KUUZ) Covering parts of Western Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas Ottawa, IL...................................... 88.9 (WWGN) Covering Ottawa, West La Salle, East Joliet, and North DeKalb Bowling Green/Toledo, OH. . . . 730 AM (WJYM) Covering parts of Northern and Central Ohio, Eastern Indiana, and the Southern tip of Michigan Kankakee, IL...................................88.3 (WAWF) Covering Northeastern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana Atlanta/Texarkana, TX. . . . . . . . . .100.1 (KNRB) Covering parts of Northeastern Texas, Northwestern Louisiana, Southwestern Arkansas, and Southeastern Oklahoma Nashville, AR....................................96.9 (KSSW) Covering Southwestern Arkansas Mobile/Citronelle, AL.....................102.1 (WQUA) Covering Mobile, Alabama Graysville, TN................................... 95.7 (WAYB) Covering parts of Southern Tennessee and Northern Georgia Lafayette/Church Point, LA.............91.9 (KCKR) Covering Southern and Western Louisiana Camden, AR..............................1450 AM (KNHD) Covering parts of Southern Arkansas Ada, OK.............................................88.7 (KAJT) Covering South Central Oklahoma Grenada, MS....................................95.7 (WTGY) Covering parts of Northwestern Mississippi Albion/Rochester, NY.................... 102.1 (WJCA) Covering North Western New York State Bentonia/Yazoo City - However, the Holy Spirit will not work outside the parameters of the finished work of Christ, which necessitates our faith in that redemption plan. Paul said, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Rom. 8:2). The Cross of Christ is God’s way, and His only way, because that is all that is needed. In order for the person to be set free, there has got to be a power greater than the powers of darkness, and the homosexual spirit is one of the most powerful spirits of darkness in the world. The greater power is in the Holy Spirit, who works exclusively, as stated, within the parameters of the Cross. This is God’s way, the way of the Cross, and it does not need the help of the ways of the world. In fact, psychology holds no help at all for the homosexual, or anyone else for that matter, only harm. It is harm because it attempts to make the person believe a lie, and it keeps them from their only source of help, the Lord Jesus Christ. THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD Psychological counseling, for the most part, attempts to make the homosexual “feel good about himself,” in other words, to accept his orientation, as it is called. If the truth be known, many psychologists claim that the guilt felt by homosexuals (or anyone for that matter), is the real problem, and is present because of certain myths, they say, called the Bible, etc. While it is true that the law of the Bible does point out man’s terrible sins, still, if the Bible did not exist, the guilt of man’s fallen condition would remain. The guilt can only be removed by Jesus Christ. The Bible did not originate the guilt — sin being the fault — it only defines it. Concerning guilt Paul also said, “There is therefore now no condemnation (guilt) to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit” (Rom. 8:1). ARE ALL HOMOSEXUALS INSTANTLY DELIVERED AT THE MOMENT OF SALVATION? In fact, yes! Actually, it can be no other way, if salvation is to be salvation (II Cor. 5:17-18); however, whereas this terrible bondage, as with other problems such as temper, alcohol, nicotine, etc., are at times broken immediately, with some, certain things regarding particular victory does not come quite so quickly. In other words, at times there is a struggle. JIMMY SWAGGART However, the Lord does not throw us out if we fail or slip back, but, in fact, instantly forgives us as we ask for such (I Jn. 1:9). Consequently, the new believer must continue to believe God, making certain that his faith is strictly in Christ and the Cross, which, as stated, will then give the Holy Spirit latitude to work within his life, which will ultimately bring victory. In fact, the struggle may continue for a period of time, but if the believer keeps his faith in Christ and the Cross, and doesn’t allow it to be moved to something else, ultimately, that sin will no longer have dominion over that person, whatever type of sin it might be. Paul said: ““For sin shall not have dominion over you (the sin nature will not have dominion over us if we as believers continue to exercise faith in the Cross of Christ; otherwise, the sin nature most definitely will have dominion over the believer): for you are not under the law (means that if we try to live this life by any type of law, no matter how good that law might be in its own right, we will conclude by the sin nature having dominion over us), but under grace (the grace of God flows to the believer on an unending basis only as long as the believer exercises faith in Christ and what He did at the Cross; grace is merely the goodness of God exercised by and through the Holy Spirit, and given to undeserving saints)” (Rom. 6:14). WILL HOMOSEXUALITY CAUSE ONE TO BE ETERNALLY LOST? Yes, that is if the person does not repent and, thereby, forsake that lifestyle. Of course, the same can be said for alcoholism, drug addiction, or religion for that matter (Gal. 5:19-21). The age-old problem of mankind is the desire to live in sin and have salvation at the same time; however, those who would attempt such a thing have not truly been born again. When the person truly comes to Christ, making Him the Lord of one’s life, affections change totally and completely. Actually, the Scripture is rather implicit about this, saying, “Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (II Cor. 5:17). In other words, the new believer does not want the old sinful lifestyle any longer, even though he may at times sense its pull. He is now a “new creation in Christ Jesus.” WHAT ABOUT THE LAWS OF CERTAIN STATES LEGALIZING HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGES? The courts legalizing something does not legitimize it in the eyes of God. The Word of God does not change irre- spective of what others may do. That is the reason it is referred to as objective truth, which means it is the same standard forever and for everyone. The recognition of homosexual marriages by the courts is an abomination in the sight of God. As well, the allowing of homosexual couples to adopt children is again, an abomination. Putting a child in such an abnormal environment can do nothing but have an adverse effect on that child, which will affect them negatively for the rest of his life. In fact, a study was recently done in England concerning this very thing. They found after exhaustive surveys, that irrespective what the world of psychology said, that the children who were placed in homosexual homes did not fare nearly as well as otherwise. In fact, there was such a negative influence on these little hearts and lives, that most of them, if any of them, outside of Christ, would ever get over the situation. Regrettably, this is also the case in many so-called straight homes and for the simple reason that most do not know Jesus. Only Jesus can make a marriage, and He definitely will not do so with such an unscriptural, perverted lifestyle of homosexuality, irrespective of claims to the contrary. However, if a home does have Christ, it has the only solution for its problems and the only guarantee for success. HOW SHOULD CHRISTIANS REACT TOWARD HOMOSEXUALS? To which we have alluded elsewhere in our comments on this subject, the Lord loves the homosexual just as much as He does anyone else. When He died on Calvary, He died for these people just as well as He died for you and me. In fact, His atonement is no different for them than for us. Likewise, Christians must show kindness and the God kind of love toward homosexuals, as they do for others. That means, at least as far as possible, to treat them as human beings, and that means with respect and dignity; however, the believer must never leave the impression that such a lifestyle is condoned, while at the same time not leveling condemnation on the person. No one has ever brought people to Christ with a club, but millions have been brought to the Saviour because they felt somebody cared for them. At the same time, I do not think it is possible that believers could be close friends with a homosexual, or anyone outside of Christ for that matter! The believer and the unbeliever have absolutely nothing in common, at least on which to build and sustain a friendship. One serves Christ, while the other serves himself. www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST AUGUST 2015 11 JIMMY SWAGGART THE REPROBATE MIND The Scripture says, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient” (Rom. 1:28). other words, light rejected is light withdrawn. The one thing answers to the other. The phrase, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,” carries the idea of the human race putting God to the test for the purpose of approving or disapproving Him. Virtually, they pronounce the true God disapproved and would have none of Him, and He in turn gave them up to a disapproved mind, a mind which actually is no mind, and cannot discharge the functions of one, a mind in which the divine distinctions of right and wrong are confused and lost, so that God’s condemnation cannot but fall on it at last. They wanted a God to their liking, and finding that He did not meet those specifications, the world refused to approve Him as the God to be worshipped, or have Him in its knowledge. This speaks of people who are completely perverted. As the Canaanites of old who did their abominations unto their gods, the last depth of evil has been reached. The knowledge spoken of here in the Greek is epignosis and means “full and precise knowledge.” In other words, their knowledge of God, due to their rebellion against Him, and, therefore, going into deep sin, was only a dim and perverted memory! There were three terrible sins pandemic in the great empires of the past, which contributed greatly to their fall. They are: If one wants to know what is wrong with the modern school system in America, despite the fact of hundreds of billions of dollars being thrown at this ever-worsening situation, it is because educators “did not like to retain God in their knowledge.” So, and speaking of the public school system, we have godless schools, which means that the schools are filled with Satan. We have godless education, which means that what knowledge the students do have is largely warped and twisted, ill-preparing them for life. We have godless direction, consequently we have erroneous ways. The phrase, “God gave them over to a reprobate mind,” presents the third time such a statement is used (Rom. 1:24, 26, 28). Once again, humanity wanted that which was licentious and evil and the Lord took away the restraining forces, allowing them to have what they desired. 1. Homosexuality. 2. Pedophilia (child molestation). 3. Incest. Regrettably, America is heading down the same path. The only answer for the homosexual and anyone for that matter is the Lord Jesus Christ. When He comes into the heart, this bondage of darkness will cease, and it will only cease if He comes into the heart. As they did not think it fit to keep God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a mind which has no way to comprehend God. In 12 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST Brother Swaggart, Here Is My Question... Judges 16:17 – “That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There has not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.” Since the fall, Satan has been able to influence man in all his actions and endeavors, so the ways of unredeemed man actually reflect the will of the enemy, not the Lord’s. SAMSON’S REMARKABLE STRENGTH CAME as a direct result of his consecration to the Lord. The term Nazarite comes from the Hebrew word nazir meaning “consecrated” or “separated.” The Nazarite vow required a man or woman not to cut one’s hair, to abstain from the fruit of the vine (wine), and not to touch a dead body (as death portrayed the fall of man, while the Nazarite was to epitomize life). In such, the Lord made it clear how important separation from the world would be for those He would use in the works and callings of His kingdom. John the Baptist was also a Nazarite: “For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb” (Lk. 1:15). Samson kept the Nazarite vow until he found a part of the world upon which he began to set his affections. His love for Delilah (Delilah being a type of the world) caused Samson to relinquish his vow of separation to God. The cutting of his hair was the outward sign of his heart’s betrayal. As a result, he lost his strength! The Philistines overtook him; they even took his sight. This should be a tremendous lesson to believers today. The Lord views affection toward the world as spiritual adultery committed against Him. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (I Jn. 2:15). 14 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST Under the new covenant, however, believers do not need to take the Nazarite vow, because we rely on the leading of the Holy Spirit to separate and distinguish us from the world. SEPARATION Separation is an inherent part of the very purpose of the church, her purpose being the proclamation of the gospel! It is a vital part of our witness and our testimony to demonstrate that we have been saved and changed! One renowned preacher, G. Campbell Morgan, said, “The church of God needs to remember that fellowship with God necessitates separation from all who fail to fulfill the responsibilities of fellowship in light or in love.” The Lord requires separateness of believers over and over again in the Scriptures — in both the Old and New Testaments. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (II Cor. 6:17). And notice this particular verse is speaking of separation from the apostate church as well. Just as there is no fellowship with the world, there is no fellowship with a backslidden church. Regarding what he referred to as “secondary separation,” Charles Spurgeon once said, “I have Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook FRANCES SWAGGART preached God’s truth, so far as I know it, and I have not been ashamed of its peculiarities. That I might not stultify my testimony, I have cut myself clear of those who err from the faith and even from those who associate with them.”1 SATAN So, why is it so important to the Lord to have His people remain separate and distinct from the world? Why does this give the Lord glory? Because this present world is actually ruled by Satan. Since the fall, Satan has been able to influence man in all his actions and endeavors, so the ways of unredeemed man actually reflect the will of the enemy, not the Lord’s. One pastor recently asked, “Is there any Scriptural directive calling us to renovate the land of the lost into a facade of faith so that it will appear to be Christian owned and operated when our Lord returns, even though it is clearly stated four times in Scripture that Satan is the ‘prince of this world?’”2 pull us back into fellowship with his fellows! He even offered Christ the kingdoms of this earth: “And the Devil, taking Him up into an high mountain, showed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the Devil said unto Him, All this power will I give You, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If You therefore will worship me, all shall be Yours. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind Me, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve” (Lk. 4:5-8). WEAK? It is also interesting to note that during the time of Samson, men with long hair were viewed as weak, yet it was one of the requirements of the Nazarite vow. Certainly it was a humbling position to be in, but it actually spoke volumes regarding the source of Samson’s strength. It gave God the glory. You see, biblical separation is separation from Satan and from the antichrist system he is presently establishing. Christians are considered foreigners in an evil kingdom, which is why it is so important for the child of God to develop discernment as he grows. It is the same today. Separation may put a believer in a position of weakness in the eyes of the world. For instance, a particular believer may refuse to partner in business with a nonbeliever, possibly lessening his or her potential to make a greater financial income. “But strong meat belongs to them who are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (Heb. 5:14). But, it is just such a believer whom the Lord delights in strengthening and supplying by His power! It is when a man humbles himself to the guiding of the Spirit that the Lord may use him the most mightily! Satan will even disguise his followers as professing believers to cause confusion. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (I Jn. 4:1). THE WAY OUT God allows His people to remain in Satan’s territory for one purpose — to show others the way out! This is the only reason we remain on earth after we are saved, so we must remain in it without being of it! Certainly it was a humbling position to be in, but it actually spoke volumes regarding the source of Samson’s strength. It gave God the glory. “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong” (II Cor. 12:10). Likewise, the church as a whole is always strengthened when she remains separate. Again, this is God’s way of demonstrating His own strength! When the church intermingles with the world or takes on the methods and ways of the world, the Lord is not glorified as He should be. The work Jesus did at Calvary is distinct and exclusive, and faith in that work always begins to distinguish you from the world. “No man who wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please Him who has chosen him to be a soldier” (II Tim. 2:4). If you deny this separation, you deny the Cross! Of course, the Devil is not pleased with our inhabitance, and he will try everything in his power to Yet, this is the precise sin of the modern church. The modern church is preaching unity rather UNITY? www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST AUGUST 2015 15 FRANCES SWAGGART than separation! Preachers today seem to think there is strength in numbers, but this is a false strength that will ultimately break down in the face of adversity. It is the Lord’s power alone that can defeat the enemy’s schemes, which is why Satan constantly tries to get the church to look for strength in anything other than Christ and Him crucified! Believers must understand that the Lord wants His church to be different! But, the modern church strives to appeal to, work with, and unify with the world or other apostate churches. Remember what happened when Samson chose to love Delilah in this manner? She eventually caused him to betray his first love. But nonetheless, the modern church has inve nte d a new “D o - Go o d” gospel. In other words, they say that in doing good together and loving one another despite any differences, people will begin to experience God on an individual basis. While it is true that good works can produce a spiritual experience, the spirit felt is not necessarily the Lord. Rather, good works produce a religious spirit (when done apart from proper faith). This is quite disturbing because churches quickly fill up with religious people rather than saved people. People who are simply religious cannot tell the difference in true and false doctrine, so their criterion for knowing about the Lord becomes experience. Some Protestants have even converted back to Roman Catholicism simply because of the spiritual experiences they have had with mystic Catholic rituals, no matter that these are completely unbiblical and ungodly. The Emergent Church is one of the greatest promoters of this road back to Rome as they emphasize and promote unbiblical spiritual attractions such as prayer stations, statues, incense, liturgy, candles, icons, and the sacraments — including the Eucharist. 16 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST UNEQUALLY YOKED? Another way the Lord admonishes believers to remain separate is by requiring us not to be unequally yoked. “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has Righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (II Cor. 6:14). The yoke is quite a powerful symbol in Scripture! It referred to the cattle yoke which bound animals to a plow so that they can work in unison. Old Testament law forbade even an ox and donkey to plow together (Deut. 22:10). The yoke was also used figuratively to refer to bondage and the burden born by slaves (Ex. 6:6-7; I Tim. 6:1). Jesus would later tell us, “My yoke is easy, and My burden is light” (Mat. 11:30). When a person is saved, he has a newfound yoke with Jesus which has freed him from all the enslaving yokes of the enemy. So, while it is perfectly fine for Christians to participate in society, they should not join in common cause with it. Christ cannot be joined to a fallen world. Those who walk by faith can never walk with those who walk by the flesh and self-will. “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). God even forbade Israel from making international alliances for defensive and economic purposes — even though the practice was common among other nations (Ex. 23:32; Josh. 23:12). The primary reason for this was spiritual, seeing that treaty relationships would involve contact with pagan religions and, thereby, call for toleration of pagan practices. This is exactly what happened when Solomon got involved in international alliances. When Jehoshaphat made a trade alliance with Israel’s wicked king, Ahaziah, a prophet came to him and announced, “Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, the Lord has broken your works ” (II Chron. 20:37).3 ALLIANCES Sadly, these are just the types of alliances that are going on in the modern church. Pastors are teaming-up with globalist/communist leaders to work toward common goals, but all this is really a guise for the Antichrist to bring about his one-world order. “Rick Warren was invited by the U.N. and accepted, to come to the U.N. Interfaith Prayer Meeting which was attended by leaders of Islam, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism and every other faith. Since most of these religions don’t believe in Christ, it is clear this was not a Christian prayer meeting but was a guise to have a globalist political conference. The U.N. believes that religions must be pacified and brought into its fold in order to have world peace. The U.N.’s plan is to synthesize all religions into one.”4 Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook False preachers try to impose a guilt trip on Christians if they will not sacrifice their personal needs for the needs of the community. Remember, the word “communism” actually comes from the word community, and ultimately the church will lose her freedom to a religious dictatorship if she refuses to remain separate from the governmental affairs of this world. This country has stood on the principle of the separation of church and state for a reason! SEPARATION NOT ISOLATION The point should also be made that in the church some have confused the idea of separation with isolation. For instance, we have seen monks and nuns of many religions isolate themselves throughout history, but this is not what God meant by separation. Jesus ate with sinners without compromising. In my husband’s commentary on II Corinthians, he writes, “Actually, Jesus contemplated that His people would have such intercourse with the world, and that in it they would do good. But in none of this is there to be any compromise of principle; in none to be any yielding to the opinions and practices that are contrary to the Word of God. As we have already stated, if we isolate ourselves, we cannot let our light shine. . . . As well, ‘separation’ must be that which is guided and directed by the Holy Spirit and not legalism. Nevertheless, having said that, one can be certain that the Holy Spirit is not going to place a seal of approval upon that which is obviously wrong.”5 If the Holy Spirit is telling you to separate and be different in any area of your life, do it! Even if other professing believers do not, you must obey for yourself, because what you are sensing is actually the beginnings of an eternal separation. Remember, only the Lord knows who is truly saved and who is not. God’s Word tells us that “the wheat and the tares” will reside together, but that the Lord will separate them in the end (Mat., Chpt. 13). So believer, rejoice and obey the Lord, because what you are sensing is simply His Spirit beginning this work in the hearts of those who are truly His. You are wheat, and it is your destiny to be separate from the tares. Quote taken from a teaching by Pastor Perry F. THERE IS AN OLD saying that goes: “The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor the man perfected without trials.” If you really want to know what someone is made of (to know what is really in a person’s heart), you must observe him when the pressure is on. When fruit is squeezed, it releases its juices from the inside. In other words, what’s inside comes to the surface. It’s the same with us. When we are squeezed, what’s in the heart will come to the surface; therefore, we must understand that every problem we face as believers is for two purposes: 1. To teach us trust and to help us to die to self. 2. To try the hearts of Christians around you. PAUL’S LOCATION Paul was in the city of Rome. It would be this occasion that Paul would write four epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon). They are called the “prison epistles” because Paul at this time was a prisoner of Rome, or so the Jews who opposed Paul thought. Even some believers thought the same. As well, the Roman government looked at Paul as a prisoner of Nero. However, that’s not how Paul saw himself. 18 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST THE PRISONER OF JESUS CHRIST Though in a hired house and not in a prison cell, Paul was chained to a Roman guard and confined in his movements. He had no freedom to come or go at his desire but was kept locked up and, as stated, was chained to a Roman guard. Paul’s captivity caused some in the early church to doubt his credentials as an apostle. His detractors (the Judaizers) and other apostate Jews used his situation to cast doubt in others concerning whether Paul was a true apostle. They didn’t know it but during this time, the Lord was using Paul’s situation to judge their own hearts. They were like so many of us who see a child of God going through a great ordeal (something very negative), and we judge the person falsely. We assume that they must have done something wrong when, in fact, the opposite is true. In other words, we see what’s happening, but we don’t know what’s going on. To the church and to the world, Paul was a “prisoner of Nero,” but to Paul, he saw himself as a “prisoner of Jesus Christ.” What we learn from the phrase, “I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ,” is this: The Lord is sovereign and in control, and at times He brings about cir- Visit my website at www.donnieswaggart.org DONNIE SWAGGART cumstances that can squeeze us. As well, He doesn’t really explain the situation to us. He does this to teach us trust and dependence upon Him. The fact is that everyone of us is going to be a prisoner of something — a prisoner of anxiety, fear, finances, family problems, etc. In the natural, those who knew of Paul’s imprisonment saw him at the mercy of Nero; however, Paul saw himself as a prisoner of Jesus Christ, meaning He didn’t question or blame the Lord. He had confidence and faith that the Lord was in control of every part of his life. Paul’s heart was, “If I’m free, I’ll praise the Lord, and if I’m a prisoner, I’ll praise the Lord. He is in charge, and I’m not. He alone knows the path He desires me to walk.” If Paul’s attitude had been one of woe and despair, he would not have been able to say in Philippians 4:11, “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” WHOSE PRISONER ARE YOU? As I close this article, let me once again ask you this question: Whose prisoner are you, Nero’s or Jesus Christ’s?” There is no in-between. You are either a prisoner to your fears and problems (Nero) or a prisoner of Jesus Christ. I would rather be a prisoner of Jesus Christ than a prisoner of Nero any day. What fruit had you then in those things whereof you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.” As Paul would explain, we are now dead to the sin nature due to our faith in the finished work of Christ, which frees us from its clutches, never to bother us again. WITHOUT A DOUBT, CHAPTER 6 of Romans is one of the single greatest chapters found in the whole of the Word of God. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul began his explanation of the sin nature, the damage it can cause, and the havoc it can create in the life of the believer if he does not understand its magnitude. As Paul would explain, we are now dead to the sin nature due to our faith in the finished work of Christ, which frees us from its clutches, never to bother us again. As one might understand, all of this took place at Calvary when we were baptized into Christ, buried with Him by baptism into His death, and raised with Him in newness of life (Rom. 6:3-5). As a result, the sin nature is to remain dormant in the life of the believer — never to bother that person again — only as his faith remains in Christ and the Cross. As we travel through this chapter, we will see Paul begin to express his feelings to the Christians at Rome and remind them of what they were before they were so wondrously and gloriously saved. He will tell them of how they were servants of sin, but now they are servants of righteousness, and he will explain again to them how all of this came about. Paul will remind them of what became of their lives of sin, which was not a pretty picture. For those who refuse to believe, I would like to take this opportunity to explain what sin entails and the price one pays to live a life of sin and shame. 20 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST SIN LEADS US TO INIQUITY I believe the above title is pretty self-explanatory but please indulge me as I explain what this means. Without a doubt, there is a destructive power to sin. It brings about an uncleanness that has plagued the entirety of the human race. Sin brings us to a place where one sin leads to another, and it grows in its intensity and severity, which makes it impossible for an individual to break the cycle on his own. In other words, sin never remains static but ever grows. It is as if we become trapped in quicksand, and if you know anything about quicksand, you know that the harder you fight, the quicker you sink. This is a perfect description of sin, for it drags us down with us being unable to change our direction. It leads from one iniquity to another. SIN LEADS TO SLAVERY There is an absolute truth to this statement, for sin ever leads to being enslaved, and there can be nothing worse than being a slave. Being a slave to sin presents a horrible existence, for it never brings any peace whatsoever but only suffering and failure. I know that many claim they can handle their sin, but all sin starts out innocently. As the Holy Spirit proclaims in Hebrews 11:25, the pleasure of sin only lasts for a season, and then it Call us at 225.768.3072 | Email us at [email protected] | www.crossfireyouthministry.org GABRIEL SWAGGART leads to bondage unlike anything that person has ever experienced before. I want to say this again: All sin begins in an innocent manner, but it never remains innocent. It grows and leads that person into a slavery that he cannot remove its grip. Every alcoholic started with one drink. Every drug addict started with one hit. Every person who is an addict of something or the other began with one sin, but it quickly ballooned into something that he or she could not escape. No matter how hard they try, they cannot free themselves. The only freedom that one can truly have is the freedom that is found in Christ Jesus, for He can deliver the captives. He can set the individuals free from all sin, and it was all done through the Cross. SIN LEADS TO SHAME This is exactly what the fruit of sin produces — shame. Shame simply means “a painful feeling of humiliation or distress by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.” Everyone of us has experienced shame at some point in our lives, but living a life of constant sin brings constant shame upon the individual. To sin means “to miss the mark,” the mark that is set by God. All have come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), which means that we all have failed God due to sin. This means that all sin is against God, and all sin is wrong, and will always result in the feeling of shame, guilt, and disgrace. Without the Lord, there is nothing that can be done by the person to alleviate that feeling of guilt and shame. Any satisfaction that is felt is fleeting; it is momentary and will never last. SIN LEADS TO DEATH Finally, the fruit of sin leads to death, and death refers to both physical and spiritual. Both speak of separation from God, and there can be nothing worse than being separated from God. The last verse in Chapter 6 of Romans tells us that “the wages of sin is death.” This means that sin does pay, but not in the way that we would like. In fact, the word wages found in this verse means “whatever is bought or purchased to be eaten with bread,” such as fish, etc. It has reference to a Roman soldier and his being partially paid in monetary wages and partially in food. Once again, Paul was saying that sin does pay, but its wages is death (separation from God), both physically and spiritually. This is a life that does not seem to be too enjoyable, but unfortunately, millions have suffered and are in hell right now because of the fruit of sin. However, the person need not live that kind of life, for there is an answer for all who suffer from sin, and that answer is found in a person, Jesus Christ. He alone can bring about the freedom from sin and give us life eternal. This was all accomplished for us through what Jesus Christ did for us at Calvary’s Cross, where all sin was paid. It was paid by the spotless, precious blood of Jesus Christ. He can remove the guilt of sin and bring us into a right relationship with God. The only thing that we have to do is simply believe. One does not have to jump through hoops or recite certain creeds. All one has to do is simply say, “Lord, I believe.” The jailer asked Paul, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul responded, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house” (Acts 16:30-31). There is an alternative to the fruit of sin, and that is the fruit of holiness, which we will get into in next month’s article. This was all accomplished for us through what Jesus Christ did for us at Calvary’s Cross, where all sin was paid. It was paid by the spotless, precious blood of Jesus Christ. This article will be continued in the September issue of The Evangelist. www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST AUGUST 2015 21 CHANNEL LISTINGS PREACHING THE CROSS 24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK UNITED STATES ( NATIONWIDE ) CABLE, SATELLITE, & DIGITAL LISTINGS S AT E L L I T E DIRECTV® Network Dish Network Verizon FiOS Glorystar Covers: US/Canada/Mexico/Central America Galaxy 19 Covers: US/Canada/Mexico/Central America Roku AT&T U-Verse Charter S TAT E Alabama Alabama Arizona Arizona California California California California California California California Colorado Connecticut Connecticut Delaware Florida Florida Florida Florida Florida Florida Florida Georgia Georgia Hawaii Idaho Idaho Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Illinois Indiana Indiana Indiana Indiana Iowa Kansas Kansas Kentucky Kentucky Louisiana Louisiana Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan Michigan Michigan Michigan Minnesota Minnesota Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi D AY S 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week 7 Days A Week TIMES 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day 24 Hours A Day UNITED STATES ( REGIONAL) CABLE LISTINGS CHANNEL 344 257 297 125 125 580 Check Local Listings for Channel CITY CABLE SYSTEM Anniston Birmingham Safford Show Low Bakersfield Burlington Los Angeles Palm Desert San Diego San Francisco San Rafael Denver Hartford, Northaven, etc. Mancester Wilmiington Astor ∙ Astatuloa ∙ Lakes of Mt. At 7:45 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, as I was watching Gabriel Swaggart on Thursday night, he was telling how Jesus healed him. I lifted up my hands and said, “Lord, it’s my time now.” I’ve been suffering from a severe thyroid problem for years. My hair was falling out, I had a golf ball-sized goiter on my throat, and suddenly, when the Holy Ghost came into my living room, I placed my hands on my neck and the goiter starting shrinking and still is shrinking. I said, “Thank You Jesus!” The Lord told me to go into the bedroom where my husband was lying on the bed, sick, and had my husband put his hand on my throat to feel the goiter shrinking. He was flabbergasted. I said, “It’s gone! Jesus healed me!” My husband said, “Thank you, Jesus.” I just wanted to say God bless this ministry. I’m still crying for joy. I’m healed because of Jesus. Praise the Lord. – Montana THE LORD USED YOU TO TELL ME THAT I DIDN’T HAVE TO TAKE MY LIFE DEAR EVANGELIST: Brother Gabe, I just wanted to tell you that your preaching had such a great impact on my life. I grew up in church, but I had been so tired of my life and of everything. Thank you, thank you, because the Lord used you to tell me that I didn’t have to take my life. Today the Lord opened my eyes and showed me that I have to stop looking at the way everyone else sees me, and that I have to stop putting on a show for everyone else because for a year now it has been eating me up inside. Thank you for speaking the truth! God bless you for revealing to me that, like leprosy, sin will grow until you have come to a hopeless situation. Thank you, and keep doing what you are doing! – GS Rally | San Antonio, TX MEDIA CHURCH MEMBER IN AFRICA IMPACTED BY SBN PROGRAMS DEAR EVANGELIST: I am viewing SBN here in Zimbabwe Africa. I am a Media Church member. Thank you for your program Frances & Friends and how it is making an impact on my life, as well as The Message Of The Cross, A Study In The Word, and The Generation Of The Cross. What this ministry is doing in my life and those whom l have introduced to watch SBN here, is beyond words can tell. God bless you and the whole panel. – Zimbabwe EXPOSITOR’S STUDY BIBLE IS THE BEST BIBLE IN THE WORLD DEAR EVANGELIST: I received my Expositor’s Study Bible today. Thank you for the excellent service. I want to tell you that this Bible is opening the Word of God for me like never before. I absolutely love it. I am reading verses that I have read many times, but now I am really understanding what the Lord is saying to me! Thank you for the best gift I have ever given myself. The best Bible in the world! – Pennsylvania 30 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST SONLIFE RADIO DRAWS LISTENER BACK TO THE CROSS OF CHRIST DEAR EVANGELIST: I just want to say that the Message of the Cross really works. Today’s program is so touching! It is taking me back to eight years ago, December of 2006, when I started listening. Prior to this, I had tried about 10 different times since I was a little kid in El Salvador to live for God. I came to the U.S. in 1992 at the age of 14, and I was in love with the Lord but under a legalistic denomination teaching. I turned 16 and decided to try to live without the Lord in the world. Drugs and alcohol got a strong hold of my life until the age of 29. On Nov. 2, 2006, for the tenth time, I was ready to live for God but didn’t know how. In desperation, fear, and guilt — in December of the same year — someone told me about SonLife Radio! And that was it!! I'm sorry, for I'm weeping as I write this. I heard it and I knew that was it! Now I'm pastoring and preaching the Message of the Cross, growing in the knowledge of who He is and what He has done for us. We thank the Lord and all of you very, very, very much! Love you! – California BACKSLIDDEN DEACON RETURNS TO THE LORD AFTER WATCHING SBN DEAR EVANGELIST: Watched your live Saturday night campmeeting service. A backslid former deacon and out of church (AG) for over eight years, I was flipping channels and I came across SBN. Halfway through your worship service, I fell on my knees when I saw Donnie break down weeping on stage. Then and there my hard sin-sick shell fell off of my heart and I once again became free and prayed the sinner’s prayer! I woke up Easter morning at daybreak. I went outside, got on my knees in my yard, and worshipped again! – Georgia PASTOR IN UGANDA BLESSED BY BIBLE STUDY ON SBN DEAR EVANGELIST: Praise the Lord Jesus Christ. I’m a pastor in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa. I’m involved in teaching sound doctrine in our area among evangelical churches. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.” Paul’s entire life, following his dynamic conversion, was one of service, sacrifice, and, at times, suffering. A DEDICATED LIFE THE LIFE OF THE Apostle Paul is clearly a great example of the dedication that any one individual may have towards the Lord and His work. Paul’s entire life, following his dynamic conversion, was one of service, sacrifice, and, at times, suffering. In the midst of this, Paul encountered the true power of God, which not only helped him to perform miracles but also equipped him with the strength and peace to finish the task the Lord had placed before him. Every time I view the life of this great man of God, I am humbled and keenly aware of my own need to become more dedicated and more consecrated to the things of God. A DRINK OFFERING When Paul says that he is “ready to be offered,” the language gives a clear picture of one who is ready to be “poured out” unto death. Paul knew that his time on the earth was short and that physical death would soon claim him through the executioner’s axe. He viewed the impending loss of his life as the completion of his earthly task. To be honest, one has to realize that Paul’s entire life, after conversion, was one that was poured out for the purposes of the Lord. Does this describe your life? We would not have the calling and the 32 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST responsibilities that Paul had, but our responsibility and calling should be addressed with no less fervor, zeal, or dedication. FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT Many in the body of Christ will teach that if a believer has enough faith, that they will experience little or no struggle. Paul taught us that to maintain the purpose and the direction of the Lord included battling “spiritual wickedness in high places,” etc. Therefore, for those doing the will of God, the battle — the struggle, if you will — is a sure thing. Satan and the powers of darkness will specifically oppose those who are attempting to fulfill the will of God. Paul says that, looking back over his life, he has moved through every struggle. Romans 8:35 asks the question, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” Well, who can? No one can stop us from being the recipients of God’s love except you and me. If we believe that God is not for us, that God is not with us, or that God has abandoned us, then tribulation, distress, famine, persecution, or sword could possibly cause a breech in our relationship with God. Despite what we experience in this life, we are to hold to God’s unchanging hand. And, like Paul, we can experience peace and strength in the midst of every stormy situation that we encounter. LOREN LARSON FINISH THE COURSE God has mapped out a specific race for every believer. God has no “pinch-runners.” Each one of us is responsible to run the race which God has set before us. God will also equip us to run our specific race. It is our responsibility to stay on course, and to cross the designated finish line established for us by God. Paul looked back over his life and said, “I have finished my course.” Are you still on course? Two major sources of aggravation and influence that often result in a believer forsaking their course are these: the influences of false doctrine and personal agenda. In Galatians 5:7, Paul asks the Galatians, “You did run well; who did hinder you …?” The idea here is that someone had run in front of these believers (teaching them false doctrine) and caused them to swerve from their designated course. For an example of what personal agenda can lead to, look at the example of Korah in the book of Numbers, Chapter 16. Korah had a race to run but wanted to run Aaron’s race. His personal agenda cost him his ministry, his life, and his soul. Are you still on the course God has given you? I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH I have commented on these verses in the order in which Paul wrote them. However, this final clause is the most important of them all. Paul says that he has accomplished all of the above and has not altered or changed the tenets of the gospel that God gave him. God gave Paul the simply yet powerful Message of the Cross. Simply stated, this gospel teaches that if the believer will keep his eyes upon the finished work of Christ, then God will consistently send a river of grace — the effectual working of the Holy Spirit — to equip that believer with whatever he or she needs to complete life’s journey. Are you still trusting in Christ and Him crucified, or have you left the faith? Paul refused to leave the simple gospel, for He knew that in it is the power of salvation and sanctification. THE GATHERING OF THE PEOPLE by john rosenstern THERE IS AN EFFORT to unite mankind together for the common goal of saving the planet. Although this is not a new idea, it has gained feet in the last few decades. Governments, church leaders and corporations around the world are running toward the new mantra of “climate change” to unite mankind and create a new world order. In order to accomplish the task of uniting the world, a strategy to reeducate CLIMATE CHANGE IS THE chosen enemy that threatens all of mankind, they claim. The globalists and their think tanks never miss an opportunity to use fear to motivate an unsuspecting audience to “lay aside differences” and work toward “the common good of all.” The Club of Rome, a think tank that works with the United Nations, says, “In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, and famine, would fit the bill.” students has FUTURE PLANS been embedded In order to accomplish the task of uniting the world, a strategy to reeducate students has been embedded into the Common Core curriculum to teach climate change as a compulsory subject. Wall Street corporations are incentivized to shift employee concerns through training while they also fund events that favor alternative energy — all with the premise that everyone must “do their part to protect one another and the planet we share.” into the Common Core curriculum to teach climate change as a compulsory subject. The United Nations has held many meetings since the 1970s on related topics of climate change. It has been known by many names in the past from the greenhouse gas effect to global warming, etc.” Its auspicious new name — climate change — is used to make these fearful omens propitious in gathering the world together. In September 2015, the UN is launching a major sustainable development agenda for the entire world. The Sustainable Development Summit will host some of the biggest names in the world. The 34 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST Roman Catholic pope will attend and deliver the opening speech. The Sustainable Development Summit agenda is a framework for managing the entire globe. GOALS OF THE AGENDA The United Nations has published its list of goals to assure us that no one will be left behind. From their website they say, “…a new sustainable development agenda that must finish the job and leave no one behind…where member states and civil society are making contributions to the agenda… There have been numerous inputs to the agenda, notably a set of sustainable development goals proposed by an open working group of the General Assembly, the report of an intergovernmental committee of experts on sustainable development financing, general assembly dialogues on technology facilitation and many others.” Their goals closely resemble a template for global governance: 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere. 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. JOHN ROSENSTERN 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The UN plan covers every realm of human activity. 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. ROAD TO CONTROL 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. 10. Reduce inequality within and among countries. 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. 15. Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss. 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. As you can see from the list, it goes far beyond fighting climate change. Ear th Day was initiated on Vladimir Lenin’s birthday. The globalists intend to use communist principles to replace capitalism. Their objective is to implement population control, a global welfare system (redistribution of wealth), planetar y governanceincluding national disarmament, and an earth-centered spirituality. Influential leaders from business, politics and religion have all played a part in shaping the agenda. Consider these examples: Dominion theology believes that Christians must retake dominion of the ear th. This speaks of spiritual dominion, but it also includes respect for the earth itself. Islamists believe that the earth was converted to Islam when Muhammad took his trip to the city of Taif. On his return to Mecca, it was said that he proclaimed the earth, water, and sky as Islam. Hence, the expression, dar al Islam, which means, “the land is Islam.” It became the responsibility of all Muslims to take dominion and convert everyone everywhere to Islam. Any land not dominated by Muslims is called a land of war, dar al harb. The Roman Catholic pope will travel to kick off the UN Sustainable Agenda conference in September 2015. Preceding the conference, the Vatican claims that Pope Francis is scheduled to release a major encyclical (a letter by the pope to all bishops) focused on the environment and climate change. Recently, the Vatican released a document sharing its views on climate change entitled, “Climate Change and the Common Good.” Within the report were their concerns over “population growth” and “uses of inappropriate technologies” linked with the destruc- tion of the world’s natural resources. Furthermore, it mentions concern over the widening inequalities of wealth and income. The UN plans to use the religious leaders of the world to persuade the masses into accepting the climate change paradigm shift. The same document issued by the Vatican makes it clear how the pope will assist with this process: “The Catholic Church, working with the leadership of other religions, can now take a decisive role by mobilizing public opinion and public funds…by the world’s religions acting in unison is certain to catalyze public debate over how we can integrate societal choices, as prioritized under UN’s sustainable development goals….” Is it any wonder why many religious leaders have visited the Roman Catholic pope recently? BAD INTENTIONS The strategy is to unite the religious leaders to cooperate and create the necessary debate to find dissenters and change their views. How diabolical! I am sure many evangelical leaders will be right there using the modern church “purpose driven” paradigm to facilitate change. Successful countries will mostly be affected by the paradigm shift and redistribution of wealth since they have the most to lose. Interesting observation: the most prosperous nations in the world have been predominantly Christian! The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. The gathering of the world, by the use of religious leaders, will not bring peace and unity. Neither will it help the planet or its resources. The selfish motivation of religions cooperating with the UN only shows they are all part of the same worldly system. Next month, we’ll deal more with who is involved with this scheme and touch on the pseudo-science supporting it. www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST AUGUST 2015 35 2015 INTERNATIONAL KIDS CONFERENCE by mike muzzerall MORE THAN 330 CHILDREN, aged 5 to 12, who were joined by parents and grandparents, filled the Crossfire auditorium on the campus of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the 2015 International Kids Conference (IKC). The theme of this year’s conference, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever” drew children and their families from 14 different states and Canada. Family Worship Center Children’s Pastor Mike Muzzerall and his wife, Ana, said from the first night of the four-day conference that the kids were full of anticipation and determination to receive from the Lord. “The Holy Spirit moved in a mighty way,” Pastor Mike said. “During the Friday night service, the altar call went 50 minutes. We had kids saved and filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking with other tongues. Children were praying for each other to be healed and for their families to be saved.” This year’s IKC opened Wednesday, June 3, with tag-team preaching between Pastor Gabriel Swaggart and Pastor Mike. Other ministers throughout the conference included Mario Nash, Scott Corbin, and Grace Brumley. Pastor Mike said that teaching kids the Message of the Cross will help them understand, at a young age, how to walk in relationship with Christ and not in religion. “I tell the kids that it’s not so much asking the popular question of ‘What would Jesus do?’ What we want them to believe and understand is the importance of what Jesus has already done.” 36 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST Plus Regular Postage, Shipping, and Handling. | All prices in The Evangelist are valid through August 31, 2015. But I think that all of you know the tremendous part she plays in this ministry. The Lord is opening doors for the television programming all over the world, for which we give Him all of the praise and all of the glory. We are doing our best to go through every door that the Lord opens because we feel this is what He has told us to do. To be frank, of all the programs on the SonLife Broadcasting Network, Frances & Friends probably has the largest audience. She’s not afraid to tackle any question, look at any doctrine, or address any subject. The people detect her honesty and integrity, and she tells it just like she thinks that it is, whatever that might be. Whatever it is that the Lord has helped us to do throughout the life of this ministry, I would have to give Frances about 90 percent of the credit for all of it (other than the Lord Himself, of course). So, I’m wishing her a very happy birthday, and that the Lord will give her many more because we still have a lot to do for the Lord Jesus Christ. And yet, irrespective of all of that, which is so very, very important, still, without you, none of it could get done. I want to thank you from the deep of my heart for your prayerful support, your financial support, and for standing with us in this worldwide effort for the cause of Christ. Every dollar that you give, I pray that the Lord will give it back to you tenfold and more. I earnestly solicit your prayers, even on a daily basis, that we may do exactly what the Lord wants done — no more and no less! VISITORS Almost every service we have visitors with us at Family Worship Center. How so pleased and happy we are to have you. If you are planning a vacation, or taking a trip anywhere at all, and it’s close to Louisiana, whatever you do, you must come by and be with us in service. I don’t think you will be disappointed. The services, we believe, are better than ever. The moving and operation of the Holy Spirit is, at times, so strong that it is undeniable. We thank the Lord for that. SALVATION THANK YOU. 38 AUGUST 2015 THE EVANGELIST I believe I can say without fear of exaggeration that we are presently getting more emails, more letters, more phone calls, and more testimonials from people being saved as a result of the television programming than at any time since the inception of SBN. And I believe it’s just getting 1970 [ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5] reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” started. I believe that this last day move is going to be the greatest yet, with a harvest of souls such as the world or the church has never seen. I believe the Lord has told me this. What we are now seeing is just a dress rehearsal for what is going to take place shortly. YOUR CALLING Short, human-interest articles (with some exceptions), while pleasant to read, will seldom give one the “meat of the Word,” but rather the opposite. Whether I am successful or not is beside the point; however, I am going to do everything within my power to get you to study the Word of God, i.e., “strong meat,” instead of mere fluff. This I do know, if you will faithfully read the article each month in The Evangelist, even though it may be involved, and even though you may have to read it twice to get what is actually being said, if you will take the time to do that, it will be well worth your while. I realize the common answer is, “I don’t have the time.” Every one of you associated with this ministry in any capacity, I believe, has been called of God exactly as I have, and all the ministers on this team. As such, here are three things that you can do: » » You can pray for us daily, even as we’ve already requested. »» You can tell others about the SonLife Broadcasting Network. »» You can give of your financial resources as the Lord will lead you to do so. Anything that God is doing, and most definitely the Message of the Cross is what He presently is doing, I believe that with all of my heart. That being said, your participation and in any capacity that is positive, is going to guarantee blessings for you and yours. I believe that with all of my heart. In fact, the message that we believe God has given us to bring to the world — the Message of the Cross — I personally believe is the single most important thing in the world today. I realize that’s quite a statement, but I believe it to be true. So, thank you for being a part of this last great day move that the Lord is doing. There is nothing more important in the world than the Word of God and your understanding of that Word. While we may not have time for many other things, we had better take the time for that. As stated, nothing is more important. Since 1970, the ministry has produced 49 volumes of The Evangelist. The magazine has grown from those first four black-and-white pages to 44 full-color pages and is available to a worldwide audience in print and electronic versions. The Evangelist has been through several redesigns, with the most recent having been done in 2014 under the direction of the magazine’s art director, Tom Coleman. The number of writers has also increased over the years, with monthly submissions from Jimmy, Frances, Donnie, and Gabriel Swaggart, as well as articles from Loren Larson, John Rosenstern, and Mike Muzzerall. Yet, throughout all the changes made to improve the magazine’s look and quality, The Evangelist maintains its integral role as “The voice of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries” and will continue to carry this message on its pages: Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
