BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 1969, The Camp Meeting Hour went on single radio stations in Atlanta, Houston, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. For six months, I made the tapes and shipped them to the stations. All of the money from my meetings was being poured into the radio effort, but the response was poor, very poor. In fact, the response was practically zero. In the late 1960s, Brother Swaggart frequently appeared with Chuck Cossin on WMUZ in Detroit. Cossin was the first disc jockey to play the evangelist’s records on radio. I had been in a revival meeting in Illinois and described the situation to the pastor. “Jimmy,” he suggested, “you’re going at it wrong. You’ve got to get up, beg for money and use whatever gimmicks you can. That’s the only way you can survive financially.” “Well, I’m not going to do that,” I replied. “I’ll starve before I use gimmicks and tricks. If God raised the program up, I’m expecting Him to support it.” Back in Baton Rouge, I told Frances what that preacher had suggested. “Well, don’t let that bother you,” she answered, trying to encourage me as usual, “God has a better plan.” “It’s not bothering me,” I asserted, “but I have decided to cancel the programs if we don’t get any better response. I’ll give it a few more weeks, but we can’t continue the way we’re going.” In spite of all the facts to the contrary, she answered me firmly. “God told us to go on radio,” she reminded me. “Why, I don’t know … but if we have to sell the furniture in the house, we’ll do it to stay on radio.” I knew she was right. God had spoken to her regarding the radio ministry about the same time He had spoken to me. Even so, wavering, I continued with my plans to cancel the program. The next week I began services in Louisville, Kentucky with Pastor Waymond Rodgers. Frances stayed home with Donnie. Somehow I knew it was a mistake to cancel the program, but I didn’t know what else to do. Each night, following the services, I returned to the motel, walked the floors and prayed. The sun rose several mornings to find me in that motel room still wide awake, eyes wet with tears. The Lord was dealing severely with me. “You’re not right, you’re not right,” He seemed to say. But I didn’t know what else to do. When nothing happened to ease the financial pressure, I wrote letters canceling the program on all three stations. ONE MESSAGE. 60 YEARS. Joseph’s Birth and Early Years By Jimmy Swaggart “And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. “And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, God has taken away my reproach: “And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son” (Gen. 30:22-24). When God remembers, it does not mean that He had forgotten. Rather it means that it was God’s time and He actively entered the situation to do something about it. ULTIMATELY GOD ANSWERED RACHEL’S petition and opened her womb. As stated, she named her son Joseph, which means “He shall add.” In effect, this was a prophecy referring to the birth of another son, who, in fact, would be Benjamin. It seems by now that Rachel had advanced somewhat in the Spirit and had forsaken human devices, such as resorting to mandrakes. She now evidenced a complete dependence on the sovereign grace of the covenant God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Concerning this, Stanley Horton says of her: “When God remembers, it does not mean that He had forgotten. Rather it means that it was God’s time and He actively entered the situation to do something about it. This intervention was to answer Rachel’s prayers that He had been listening to the entire time of Leah’s childbearing years. God, not the mandrakes, made it possible for Rachel to have a son. Barrenness was considered a disgrace. Now that disgrace was removed by the birth of a son. But she was not satisfied, since Leah had six sons. So she named the boy Joseph, meaning ‘He shall add,’ and she asked for another son. Unfortunately the fulfillment of that prayer would cause her death (Gen. 35:16-19).” Very little is said about Joseph regarding his upbringing. When Jacob was to meet Esau, Joseph was mentioned. Concerning that time, the Scripture says, “And he (Jacob) put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost. 6 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST “And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. “And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept” (Gen. 33:2-4). This occasioned Jacob with his family and herds coming back to the Promised Land. He had been away for more than 20 years. How old that Joseph was at this time, we aren’t told; however, he was probably not much more than 4 or 5 years old. We now pick up with the account of his life when he was 17 years old as given to us in the Word of God. The Scripture says: “And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. “These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report” (Gen. 37:1-2). Verse 2 sets Joseph forward as a shepherd 17 years of age. It is believed that his mother Rachel was still living but died within the year. It must be remembered that these accounts are not necessarily given in chronological order. The story that is about to unfold before us is at least one of the most remarkable and one of the most powerful in the entirety of the Scriptures, and in history for that matter. It is a powerful WE BELIEVE: JOSEPH’S BIRTH AND EARLY YEARS »»The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God. (Ps. 119; Mat. 4:4; Lk. 24:27) »»There is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (I Jn. 5:7) testimony to the inspiration of the Word of God, for no man either before or after the writing of the New Testament could have composed such a story. As stated, it is one of the most remarkable in history. Evidently Jacob’s vast herds were divided into at least two flocks and perhaps even more. Joseph was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, while the sons of Leah were evidently shepherding the other flock. We aren’t told exactly what the evil report was that Joseph related to his father, but it probably had to do with the immoral Canaanite practices in which his brothers were participating. There is some indication that he had first spoken to them about these practices, but that only aroused resentment against him in their hearts. While these men were in the covenant, so to speak, they were actually not a part of the covenant. In other words, they knew about God, but they really didn’t know God. »»In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin Birth, in His Sinless Life, in His Miracles, in His Vicarious and atoning Death, in His Bodily Resurrection, in His Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this Earth in Power and Glory to rule a thousand years. (Rev. 20:5-6, 11-15) THE PRICELESS CORNER THE COAT OF COLORS “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors” (Gen. 37:3). If it is to be noticed, the Holy Spirit used here the name Israel, signifying that what was done here regarding Joseph was totally of the Lord. Many have claimed that Jacob caused this problem among his sons by favoring Joseph. That’s not true! The love expressed here had to do with the Lord laying His hand on Joseph, while Jacob’s other sons had rejected the Lord. Even though Jacob loved all of his sons, his love for Joseph had to do with the will of God. While he was his youngest (Benjamin having not yet been born), still, that was not the primary reason. Because of sin on the part of his other sons, there was no fellowship between Jacob and these sons. In fact, there couldn’t be any fellowship, as would be obvious. There was fellowship with Joseph because of the touch of God on his life, and above all, his love for God. THE BIRTHRIGHT The coat of many colors holds a special meaning. It was to be worn by the one who was to have the birthright, normally the firstborn. However, as it had been with Jacob and Esau, the firstborn, who was Reuben, would not have this position of leadership. The Holy Spirit proclaimed that it should go to Joseph. When Jacob left this mortal coil, Joseph, in essence, was to be the high priest of the family, which the following years graphically proved to be the case! Jacob didn’t want to make the mistake his father Isaac had made. Isaac didn’t want to give the birthright to Jacob even though the Lord had made it very plain at the birth of the two boys that this was to be the case. Jacob coming by that position as a result of Isaac’s procrastination was fraught with difficulties and problems. Jacob was determined that this would not be the case with his actions. The moment the Lord told him that Joseph was to be the one, however that happened, Jacob immediately proclaimed [CONTINUED ON PAGE 8] We have set aside this corner of The Evangelist to show God’s Plan of Salvation. If you are unsure where you will go when you die, please listen to what God has said in His Word: FIRST: GOD LOVES YOU! “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life” (Jn. 3:16). SECOND: MAN IS A SINNER, AND SIN HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM GOD “For there is not a just man upon Earth, that doeth good and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20). “For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). THIRD: JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God ...” (I Pet. 3:18). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). FOURTH: YOU MUST RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR Jesus calls this experience the “new bir th.” He told Nicodemus: “... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3). We invite you now to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name” (Jn. 1:12). Pray this prayer and mean it with all of your heart: Dear Lord Jesus, I now realize that I am a sinner. I accept the fact that You died for me on the rugged Cross of Calvary. I now open my heart’s door and receive You as Saviour and Lord of my life. Please take full control of me and help me to be the kind of Christian You want me to be. Amen. If you prayed this prayer in all sincerity, you are now a Child of God. So that we might rejoice with you, we invite you to fill out this coupon and mail it to Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, P.O. NAME ADDRESS CITY STATE/PROVZIP DATE OF DECISION AGE JOSEPH’S BIRTH AND EARLY YEARS [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7] his position by making Joseph this many-colored coat, which he would wear at certain times. As we shall see, none of this sat well at all with his brothers. HATRED “And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him” (Gen. 37:4). This perfectly epitomizes Christ, of whom Joseph was one of the most remarkable types found in the Word of God. God loved His Son and showed it greatly by lavishing upon Him all the power of the Holy Spirit. As a result, the Jews, who were His brethren, so to speak, hated Him. So, what we see here regarding this scenario is a perfect picture of Christ. This hatred — and hatred it is — follows down in the church regarding the same principles. What do I mean by that? Those on whom the Lord has laid His hand will ultimately be hated by the church. As we have previously stated, this small family, which actually constituted the church of its day, had little trouble with its surrounding neighbors, although they were heathen. The greatest problems came from within, even as we are studying here. It is the same with the modern church. The hatred and animosity little comes from without, but rather from within. stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. “And his brethren said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? or shall you indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words” (Gen. 37:5-8). The Lord revealed the future to Joseph in a dream. While the dream definitely referred to him, with it ultimately being fulfilled, it more so referred to Christ and Israel. He told his brothers the truth, and they hated him even more. Thus it was with Joseph’s great Antitype. He bore witness to the truth, and his testimony to the truth was answered on man’s part by the Cross. The mention of Joseph’s mother in Verse 10 is thought by some to be a mistake in the sacred text, with Rachel already being dead. However, she was still living at the time and died shortly afterward. As stated, these accounts are not necessarily given in chronological order. By looking at these dreams from the natural viewpoint, many have suggested that it was prideful arrogance that had Joseph to relate these dreams to his brothers. However, it was not done in pride since there is no reason to suppose that Joseph as yet understood the celestial origin of his dreams, much less what they meant. A TYPE OF CHRIST Concerning this, The Pulpit Commentary says: “He related this in the simplicity of his heart and in doing so he was also guided, unconsciously it may be, but still really, by an overruling providence, who made use of the very telling of the dream as a step toward its fulfillment.” The Pulpit Commentary continues, “In the absence of information to the contrary, we are warranted in believing that there was nothing either sinful or offensive in Joseph’s spirit or manner in making known his dreams. That which appears to have excited the hostility of his brethren THE DREAMS “And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. “And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: “For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also “AND JOSEPH DREAMED A DREAM...” [CONTINUED ON PAGE 10] 8 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST FULL-POWER STATIONS Baton Rouge, LA............................. 88.5 (WJFM) Covering parts of Southern Louisiana Crete, IL........................................... 88.1 (WBMF) Covering South Chicago and Chicago Heights Lake Village, AR/Greenville, MS......95.9 (KUUZ) Covering parts of Western Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas Ottawa, IL...................................... 88.9 (WWGN) Covering Ottawa, West La Salle, East Joliet, and North DeKalb Bowling Green/Toledo, OH. . . . 730 AM (WJYM) Covering parts of Northern and Central Ohio, Eastern Indiana, and the Southern tip of Michigan Kankakee, IL...................................88.3 (WAWF) Covering Northeastern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana Atlanta/Texarkana, TX. . . . . . . . . .100.1 (KNRB) Covering parts of Northeastern Texas, Northwestern Louisiana, Southwestern Arkansas, and Southeastern Oklahoma Nashville, AR....................................96.9 (KSSW) Covering Southwestern Arkansas Mobile/Citronelle, AL.....................102.1 (WQUA) Covering Mobile, Alabama Graysville, TN................................... 95.7 (WAYB) Covering parts of Southern Tennessee and Northern Georgia Lafayette/Church Point, LA.............91.9 (KCKR) Covering Southern and Western Louisiana Camden, AR..............................1450 AM (KNHD) Covering parts of Southern Arkansas Ada, OK.............................................88.7 (KAJT) Covering South Central Oklahoma Grenada, MS....................................95.7 (WTGY) Covering parts of Northwestern Mississippi Albion/Rochester, NY.................... 102.1 (WJCA) Covering North Western New York State Bentonia/Yazoo City - While he very definitely did commit sins at times simply because the Scripture says that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” still, these sins were not recorded because of his place and position. To be sure, if what Joseph did in relating these dreams was wrong, the Holy Spirit would have said so or else ignored the incident. While the dream definitely had to do with Joseph, as we shall see, Joseph’s life and experiences far more portrayed Christ. Concerning the dream, while his brothers would definitely bow down to him, the greater meaning has to do with the time that is coming when Israel will bow down to Christ. This will take place immediately after the second coming. That is by far the greater meaning and that which the Holy Spirit intends to present. THE TRUTH The hatred that Joseph’s brethren exhibited toward him represents the Jews in Christ’s day. “He came to His own, and His own received Him not.” He had “no form nor comeliness” in their eyes. They would not own Him as the Son of God or as the King of Israel. Their eyes were not open to behold “His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” They would not have Him. They hated Him. REVELATION “And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. “And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth? “And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying” (Gen. 37:9-11). JOSEPH’S BIRTH AND EARLY YEARS As it regards Joseph, we see that in no wise did he relax his testimony in consequence of his brothers’ refusal of his first dream. He dreamed another dream and told it, as well, to his brethren and his father. This was simple testimony founded upon divine revelation, but it was testimony that brought Joseph down to the pit. Had he kept back his testimony or taken off part of its edge and power, he might have spared himself, but no, he told them the truth, and, therefore, they hated him even more. THE TESTIMONY OF CHRIST Concerning this, C. H. Mackintosh said: “Thus was it with Joseph’s great Antitype. He bore witness to the truth — He witnessed a good confession — He kept back nothing — He could only speak of the truth because He was Truth, and His testimony to the truth was answered, on man’s part by the Cross, the vinegar, the soldier’s spear. “The testimony of Christ too, was connected with the deepest, fullest, richest grace. He not only came as ‘The Truth,’ but also as the perfect expression of all the love of the Father’s heart: ‘grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.’ He was the full disclosure to man of what God was, and was the full disclosure to God of what man ought to have been, but was not; hence man was left entirely without excuse. He came and showed God to man, and man hated God with a perfect hatred. The fullest exhibition of divine love was answered by the fullest exhibition of human hatred. This is seen in the Cross; and we have it touchingly foreshadowed at the pit into which Joseph was cast by his brethren.” and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem” (Gen. 37:12-14). Joseph was given more revelation through another dream. Little did all of these men know, even Joseph or his father, as to how important this revelation actually was. In these dreams, the Holy Spirit portrayed Israel’s acceptance of Christ when, in fact, at the time the dream was given, there was no Israel, at least as far as a nation was concerned. The short phrase, Here am I, in reply to Jacob’s request of Joseph, foreshadows the statement of Christ, “Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of Me. “I delight to do Your will, O My God: Yes, Your law is within My heart” (Ps. 40:7-8). The conspiracy against Joseph to murder him foreshadowed the conspiracy of the religious leaders of Israel to murder Christ. Jacob sending Joseph to his brethren in order to find out how they were doing proves that he did not understand at all the depths of their hatred for Joseph. However, all of this foreshadowed God sending His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to the nation of Israel, even as Israel was raised up for this very purpose. The difference is, whereas Jacob was ignorant of the degree of hatred evidenced against Joseph, God was not ignorant at all but knew totally of the hatred on the part of Israel that would be evidenced toward Christ. Nevertheless, this did not deter Him at all! The conspiracy against Joseph to murder him foreshadowed the conspiracy of the religious leaders of Israel to murder Christ. THE SENDING OF JOSEPH “And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. “And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not your brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send you unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. “And he said to him, Go, I pray you, see whether it is well with your brethren, and well with the flocks; This message was taken from the new Jimmy Swaggart hardback book, Joseph. John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Fallen humanity’s only choice then is to find blood that is pure, untainted by sin, and, thereby, able to take our place in death. Thank the Lord, that blood has been provided! GOD’S WORD TELLS US that without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin (Heb. 9:22). Fallen humanity’s only choice then is to find blood that is pure, untainted by sin, and, thereby, able to take our place in death. Thank the Lord, that blood has been provided! We must ever let it be known that it was the Lord Jesus Christ who was the only One worthy and the only One whose blood can wash clean the souls of men! Death was the price for sin, and it was Jesus, hallelujah, who paid this price and died in the place of those who would come to Him! “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). Jesus is without question the one and only way to God! Revelation 13:8 says that Jesus was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. None can be rescued from hell who refuse the blood of God’s only Son. should take away sins” (Heb 10:4). Yet, even in this temporary situation, God always only had one specific place, one tabernacle, and/or one brazen altar in which He would accept the sacrifices. His conditions were designed to typify the sacrifice of Christ, which was to come. Some depraved individuals throughout history even tried sacrificing babies upon evil heathen altars in a desperate attempt to atone for sin. However, Christ alone was spotless, making Him the only suitable sacrifice for our sin. Eternal life and salvation are only available to those who identify with His substitutionary death at Calvary! “Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4). CHRIST ALONE! Tragically, however, in both the church and the world today, we have many who are teaching that there is more than one way to God. These say that as long as you sincerely pursue goodness in your life and follow your conscience to the best of your ability, whatever path you take will ultimately lead you to God and bring you to heaven one day. These individuals could make no greater mistake! With all our creature comforts, entertainments, and distractions, it may be hard in this modern age to comprehend the dire consequences of sin. Yet, it is the actual reason our physical bodies die, and spiritually-speaking, we are already “… dead in trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2:1). The reason human beings experience a sense of distance or disconnect with God is because of our sin. God’s holiness prevents Him from fellowshipping with unrighteousness. You see, man cannot save himself because all men have inherited a sin nature. Neither can one man die for another. Not even the death of an innocent animal is enough. In the Old Testament, the Lord instituted the animal sacrifices, but this only served as a temporary covering for sin until Christ would completely take sin away. “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats 14 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST JESUS — THE ONLY WAY TO GOD Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook IS THERE MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GOD? However, unlike the Jews, we do not have to watch the fires consume the flesh of the animal sacrifices, nor do we have to physically apply the blood of an innocent lamb across the doorposts of our homes to escape an angel of death like the Jews did in Egypt (Ex., Chpt. 12). As well, we did not see God strike dead the priests who offered up “strange fire” to Him (Lev. 10:1-2), meaning that their offering failed to typify Christ’s sacrifice. The Lord allowed such vivid events, however, to try to show man the spiritual magnitude that Christ’s death on the Cross would be. It was, in fact, the only way God could have ever reached us! A DANGEROUS DIRECTION Sadly, one of the most outspoken proponents that Jesus is not the only way to God is Oprah Winfrey. Although raised Baptist, she has come to embrace an entirely different and dangerous spirituality. This is not only sad for the sake of Oprah’s soul, but also for the souls of the many she is now leading astray. Several years ago on her own program, Oprah emphatically stated, “There couldn’t possibly be just one way!” Here is the resulting dialogue when a woman in the audience reminded her of Jesus. Oprah (speaking to the woman in the audience): Do you think that if you are somewhere on the planet, and you never hear the name of Jesus, but yet, you live with a loving heart, you lived as Jesus would have had you to live, you lived for the same purpose that Jesus came to the planet to teach us all, but you are in some remote part of the earth, and you never heard the name of Jesus, you cannot get to heaven, you think? Woman: God knows the heart. Oprah: Does God care about your heart, or does God care whether you call His Son Jesus?” Woman: Jesus cannot come back until that Gospel is preached in the four corners of this earth, so, you know, figure it out. Oprah: Okay, I can’t get into a religious argument with you. What a sarcastic statement with which Oprah ends this conversation, as if she had not been having a religious discussion all along!1 WITHOUT EXCUSE Thank God, we still have a few brave Christians in this world. I’m sure this lady in the audience had no idea how far-reaching her defense of Jesus would be that day. And though this lady was right in that the Gospel will be preached to the four corners of the earth, according to Scripture, it is also true that even if someone does not hear the name of Jesus, he will still stand before God without excuse. “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20). “Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them” (Isa. 42:9). God does not fail to make Himself known to us. This lady was also correct in that God knows our hearts. If the heart is truly seeking Him and is repentant of sin, then it is the job of the Holy Spirit to lead us to Christ and His Cross. The Holy Spirit, who is God, will never fail to lead us to Jesus! “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. He shall glorify Me (Christ): for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father has are Mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of Mine, and shall show it unto you” (Jn. 16:13-15). Christians should never apologize for their faith in the glorious Gospel of our Lord! God is just, and He will always do what is fair and right in the life of every person on the planet. God knows our hearts. If the heart is truly seeking Him and is repentant of sin, then it is the job of the Holy Spirit to lead us to Christ and His Cross. DIFFERENT ROUTES? In an October 26, 2004, ABC News interview with Charles Gibson, President George Bush responded to the question of whether or not Christians and Muslims worship the same God. He said, “I think we do. We have different routes of getting to the Almighty …. But I want you to understand, I want your listeners to understand, I don’t get to decide who goes to heaven. The almighty God decides who goes to heaven, and I am on my personal walk.” President Bush, who has professed to be a bornagain Christian, also made this heretical statement in an interview on Al Arabiya television: “I believe in an almighty God, and I believe that all the world, whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST FEBRUARY 2015 15 IS THERE MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GOD? religion, prays to the same God … I believe there is a universal God. I believe the God that the Muslim prays to is the same God that I pray to. After all, we all came from Abraham. I believe in that universality.”2 Let’s now look right within the professing Christian church itself. Here is a television dialogue between Billy Graham and Robert Schuller on May 31, 1998 (as reported in the May-June 1997 Foundation magazine): Schuller: Tell me, what do you think is the future of Christianity? The list of Scriptures goes on and on: “He who has the Son has life; and he who has not the Son of God has not life” (I Jn. 5:12). Graham: Well, Christianity and being a true believer, you know, I think there’s the body of Christ which comes from all the Christian groups around the world or outside the Christian groups. I think everybody that loves Christ, or knows Christ, whether they’re conscious of it or not, they’re members of the body of Christ … and that’s what God is doing today, He’s calling people out of the world for His name, whether they come from the Muslim world, or the Buddhist world, or the Christian world, or the non-believing world, they are members of the body of Christ because they’ve been called by God. They may not even know the name of Jesus, but they know in their hearts that they need something that they don’t have, and they turn to the only light that they have, and I think that they are saved, and that they’re going to be with us in heaven. Schuller: Well, what I hear you saying, that it’s possible for Jesus Christ to come into human hearts and soul and life, even if they’ve been born in darkness and have never had exposure to the Bible. Is that a correct interpretation of what you’re saying? Graham: Yes, it is, because I believe that. I’ve met people in various parts of the world in tribal situations, that they have never seen a Bible or heard about a Bible, and never heard of Jesus, but they’ve believed in their hearts that there was a God, and they’ve tried to live a life that was quite apart from the surrounding community in which they lived. Schuller: This is fantastic! I’m so thrilled to hear you say that! There’s a wideness in God’s mercy! Graham: There is. There definitely is. 16 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST Actually, the Roman Catholic universal catechism, page 224, paragraph 847, says almost exactly the same thing: “Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience, those too may achieve eternal salvation.”3 This is also very similar to Oprah’s response to the woman in her audience that if a person tries to be good, sincere, and loving, he can make it to heaven without Christ. But again, no amount of good works can atone for sin! It took the death of a perfect sacrifice! In a June 16, 2005, CNN interview with Larry King, Billy Graham made these statements: King: But what about those faiths — the Mormons and the others that you mentioned — [they] believe in Christ. They believe they will meet Christ. What about those like the Jews, the Muslims, who don’t believe they …” Graham: That’s in God’s hands. I can’t be the judge. King: You don’t judge them? Graham: No. King: How do you feel … Graham: … going to hell and all that. King: How do you feel when you see a lot of these strong Christian leaders go on television and say, ‘You are condemned, you will live in hell if you do not accept Jesus Christ,’ and they are forceful and judgmental? Graham: Well, they have a right to say that, and they are true to a certain extent, but I don’t — that’s not my calling. My calling is to preach the love of God and the forgiveness of God and the fact that He does forgive us. That’s what the Cross is all about, what the resurrection is all about, that’s the gospel. And you can get off on all kinds of different side trends, and in my earlier ministry, I did the same, but as I got older, I guess I became more mellow and more forgiving and more loving … ONE NAME ONLY! This is quite shocking because the Bible makes it completely clear that salvation comes by one Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook IS THERE MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GOD? name only! Matthew 7:14 says, “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it.” Acts 4:12 says, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” In Acts 16:30-31, a prison guard asks Paul and Silas this question when he sees that the power of God had broken their prison bands: “… Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house.” The list of Scriptures goes on and on: “He who has the Son has life; and he who has not the Son of God has not life” (I Jn. 5:12). “Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by Me” (Jn. 14:6). “Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture” (Jn. 10:7-9). We hope that these confusing statements made by Billy Graham in recent years are due to some of the medical complications he has experienced because in Graham’s early ministry, he clearly preached that Jesus was the only way! However, we must warn those who would take his recent statements to heart and head down the path of apostasy as a result of their confidence in Graham. SIN! What so many of these leaders have done is avoid the subject of sin altogether or somehow redefine it so that the solution can be something other than Christ. In Self-Esteem, The New Reformation, Robert Schuller wrote, “Salvation is defined as rescue from shame to glory. It is salvation from guilt to pride, from fear to love, from distrust to faith, from hypocrisy to honest … so lack of trust or a lack of self-worth is the central core of sin.”4 Schuller’s statement here sounds very similar to what Oprah described in Marianne Williamson’s book, A Return To Love. She described how New Age guru, Williamson, spoke of salvation as choosing to move in the direction of love (light) rather than moving in the direction of fear (darkness).5 Again, man cannot choose salvation through correct action; it took the blood of the Lamb! By completely dismissing their need for a Saviour, these leaders dismiss Jesus as the only way to God. Lord, help us all to recognize our need for the saving blood of Jesus! I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Salvation by grace through faith is understood, believed, and preached. I HAVE NO DOUBT that the title of this article caused some to do a double take. I’m sure there were those who asked the question, “Why would Brother Donnie say that the church hates the Message of the Cross?” The answer is that the Message of the Cross is the message of justification and sanctification to which Paul is referring — both justification in Verse 20 and sanctification in Verse 21. There is no argument regarding the Message of the Cross and salvation from any true Bible-believing Christian or church. Salvation by grace through faith is understood, believed, and preached. The argument is regarding sanctification. Most of the church today believes in justification by faith and sanctification by works. Religious man is very proud of the works in which he engages, and he loves to boast of those works. Incidentally, most of the time, those works are good things, such as prayer, Bible study, witnessing, etc. Some go to extremes regarding dress, makeup, jewelry, and the like; however, there are far more in the church today who are trying to sanctify themselves by that which is good and honorable than those who are involved in extreme legalism. Now, please don’t make the mistake that I am minimizing prayer, Bible study, church atten- 18 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST dance, or the like. God forbid! We are to pray, we are to study, and we all should be doing everything we can to have fellowship with the Lord and grow in grace. However, as good, holy, and noble as these works are, the “doing” of them does not sanctify anyone. All of us have been guilty of taking something that is good and right in the sight of the Lord and then thinking that because I do this or that or don’t do this or that, look how holy I am. Surely I am earning brownie points from the Lord. However, just as it is impossible for man to justify himself by works, so too is it impossible to sanctify oneself through one’s works. Actually, one becomes self-righteous and eventually spiritually frustrated because sanctification by works brings misery and bondage. THE CROSS If one is diligent, he will notice that in Verse 20, Paul begins with the Cross — “I am crucified with Christ” — and it ends with the Cross, “Who loved me and gave Himself for me.” In this one verse, we see the true Gospel of the new covenant — Jesus Christ crucified as the ransom for the souls of humanity. The Cross is not just another doctrine among many other doctrines in the Bible. The Visit my website at www.donnieswaggart.org WHY IS THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS HATED BY THE CHURCH? Message of the Cross is the entire foundation of Christianity. The Cross is the foundation from which all correct doctrine flows from heaven. or delivered, and the two sides of that mold are justification and sanctification. Let me say it another way. It is impossible to maximize the Cross. It is impossible to preach too much about the Cross. It is impossible to sing too much about the Cross. It is impossible to talk too much about the Cross. The Cross is to one’s spiritual life as breathing is to one’s physical life. We can’t live without either one. At the moment of one’s expression of faith in Christ, the same faith that justifies also sanctifies. Therefore, when one is wrapped up into the gospel of “self-sanctification,” immediately, an anger rises up in opposition. This is because they don’t believe that Christ paid the full price for justification and sanctification. Man’s efforts are revealed for what they are — prideful of one’s own works. FRUSTRATING THE GRACE OF GOD THE CROSS EXPOSES FALSE DOCTRINE In Verse 21, Paul plainly states that to try and earn one’s salvation and sanctification by his own works frustrates the grace of God. No doubt, most of you who have read these verses before never thought of sanctification but only salvation. However, when one really studies the word frustrate, then one begins to see that by the use of this word, Paul is covering both justification and sanctification. Frustrate is from the Greek word atheteo, which means “to do away with something laid down, presented or established; to act toward anything as though it were annulled; to thwart the efficacy of anything; to nullify; to make void.” Simply put, it is all of Christ and none of man, either salvation or sanctification. When one tries to sanctify oneself by his own works, he frustrates the grace of God. He nullifies or makes void all that Christ did for us at Calvary. Paul stated in Galatians 2:21, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” We are noticing a more pronounced opposition from some in the church, preachers and laity, against the Message of the Cross as it regards sanctification. However, one doesn’t realize that to dismiss and oppose the Message of the Cross and the part it plays in sanctification also belittles the great truth of justification by faith because they are inseparable. Why is this? How can one proclaim justification by faith but grow angry over sanctification by faith? There are three reasons. THE CROSS REVEALS THE HEART When the true Message of the Cross is proclaimed, it will always reveal the heart of religious man. In Romans 6:17, Paul wrote: “But God be thanked, that you were the servants of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.” The phrase, “But you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you,” declares the Christian faith to have been once and for all delivered to the church as fixed and complete and, therefore, neither needing nor accepting additions. Into that form, as into a mold, we were poured Visit my website at www.donnieswaggart.org All false doctrine constitutes some form of man-made doctrine or rules negating the Cross. Religious man loves rules — laws of their own making — and when one boldly says its faith and faith alone, watch out because their ire is going to be aroused. When one stands up and says it is the Cross and the Cross alone that sanctifies the saint, then all of religious man’s self-made rules and works fall to the ground, and no one likes to admit that all he’s been doing and telling others to do falls by the wayside. When one says it’s not your confession, your water baptism, your giving, your fasting, your taking communion every day, or whatever is being proclaimed, the lie is exposed. If it’s not the Cross for justification and the Cross for sanctification, then it’s another gospel, another Jesus, another spirit. THE CROSS EXPOSES THE FLESH OF MAN Romans 8:3 days, “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.” Religious man loves to feed the flesh through religious disciplines, good works, laws, and rules to govern holiness by what one wears or what one does or doesn’t do. The problem is that when one tries to do this, something else is constantly being added to what we do or don’t need. Never forget that religious flesh must constantly be fed; we must keep adding to our silly rules. CONCLUSION The Christian’s faith is either in the complete finished work of Christ, or it’s half in Christ and half in self, thereby, producing a frustrated and defeated Christian. As for me, “I am crucified with Christ,” and that says it all. www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST FEBRUARY 2015 19 20 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST E X PE R I E NC E T H E DI F F E R E NC E! PREACHING OF THE WORD CHANGED MAN WHO DRANK SEVEN DAYS A WEEK DEAR EVANGELIST: I just want to thank SBN from the bottom of my heart. I was flipping through channels 10 months ago and ran across SBN on channel 297, and, at first I was going to change the channel, but something told me to keep it on. Jimmy Swaggart was preaching and said, “Jesus is waiting for you if you’re an alcoholic.” I drank seven days a week and was never sober. If I was awake, I had rum in my hand. On that day in October, I gave the devil a black eye — I gave my heart and life over to Jesus Christ — and I have been sober ever since! Thank you so much for reaching out and having a network because your channel is spreading the Holy Word of Jesus Christ. It not only sobered me up, but it let me become a child of Jesus Christ. Thank you so much Pastor Jimmy Swaggart and other ministers. Thank you for spreading the message because now I am sober for 10 months because you spread the Holy Word! – Maryland SOUTH AFRICAN FAMILY THANKFUL TO SBN FOR ALL THE GOOD NEWS DEAR EVANGELIST: My family and I greet you in the name of our Jesus Christ. On behalf of my family, I would like to thank you for all your good news. I can tell you that since we started watching your mission on TV, we all have been touched and we ask God, to grow up in Him. We are here in South Africa; I am from Burundi, and my wife is from Tanzania. Please keep it up so many people all over in the world can hear, in the name of Jesus, Amen. – South Africa VIEWER SHARES SENSE OF BELONGING WHILE WATCHING SBN DEAR EVANGELIST: I have always enjoyed watching your family’s ministry through Christ Jesus. I’m not going to sit 28 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST here and blow smoke at you about my track record with Christ. To be honest, I’ve been a hot mess. But the last several months, while tuning in periodically to view the Swaggart family express Christ, I have been experiencing a slow but gradual change. Lord knows that this gives me a sense of belonging. My only request is that you and your church family keep me in your praying power through Jesus so that I endure His growth process. Thank you for your time in reading this email. Amen! – Email FAMILY WORSHIP CENTER WAS A DIFFERENT CHURCH EXPERIENCE FOR BELIEVERS DEAR EVANGELIST: My buddy and I took a trip down to Family Worship Center. We are both born again, but I must confess that I have been in the desert a long time. I have been struggling with the same issue for many years. Plus, I had been moving from church to church and none of them seemed to really be preaching the Word. Then I found you guys. So my buddy and I were there, and we got to hear Brother Larson preach. Praise God! I haven’t stopped praising Him since. I had been praying every night to be filled with the Holy Ghost, and I was filled with the Spirit, praise God! God bless your ministry. – New Jersey ANOINTING ON “THERE IS A RIVER” SONG PREVAILS OVER “HIGHWAY TO HELL” DEAR EVANGELIST: Your song, “There is a River,” turned my life around. On drugs and drunk, I came in my house one day in 1990, and my mother asked me to go to church Sunday. I went into my room, shut my door and turned up my radio. I was listening to the AC\DC song, “Highway to Hell.” I turned it up louder, but the song “There is a River” kept getting louder and louder! Satan began to speak to me saying, “Why don’t you take care of it? Your stepdad has a .357 Magnum in his desk drawer, just take care of them all.” As I began to walk out of my bedroom door, the Spirit of God stopped me and the Lord spoke to me and said, “This is not you, I love you,” and I went to my knees crying, asking God to forgive me and the Holy Ghost renewed my spirit and my walk with him. I apologized to my mother and to my little brother (for hitting him), and I went to church that Sunday. I have never been the same since! I love the Lord and the presence of the Holy Ghost in my life. Your music inspires me. – Email PLEASE DON’T STOP DOING WHAT YOU’VE BEEN CALLED TO DO DEAR EVANGELIST: I thank God for you, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, and for the SonLife Broadcasting Network. I listen to your broadcast every day (about six to eight hours). My sons and I go to sleep to the sound of your Classic Crusades, and I love them. I grew up listening to you, “live.” I loved the Word of God then, and I love the Word of God now. Please know that I pray for your health and strength, and I pray blessings upon the church and family. Please do not stop what you have been called to do because it is effective, important, and much needed. – Arizona MESSAGE OF THE CROSS, MINISTRY HAS MONUMENTAL IMPACT ON BELIEVERS DEAR EVANGELIST: I’m not much of a letter writer, yet I felt it so very necessary to let you know the great impact of this mandate which God has given you. Reverend Swaggart, the Message of the Cross is far more than what any earthly being can imagine or comprehend. The impact which you have had on believers (the church world), whether they admit it or not, has been monumental! May God bless you. – Illinois Plus Regular Postage, Shipping, and Handling. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” He would allow these events to turn him toward the Lord, for it was only the Lord who could change that curse and turn it into a blessing. THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE birth of Jabez were anything but stellar. When one looks at his life, his very name means “he makes me to sorrow,” which means that his mother could not properly care for him, or else, she did not want him. Either way, just by the very meaning of his name, those circumstances would follow him for the rest of his existence. This could have destroyed Jabez, but thankfully, he refused to let life’s events dictate his outcome, but he would allow these events to turn him toward the Lord, for it was only the Lord who could change that curse and turn it into a blessing. Many times, the uncertainty of life will bring about situations that would cause us to run away from the Lord, but if we apply that which we read in the life of Jabez and allow the events of our lives to bring us closer to the Lord, then He can turn those negatives into a positive. I like to say it like this: only God can take our wrong, put it into His right, and make everything alright. Spirit made this statement is that Jabez did what we all should do in the time of adversity — he called on the God of Israel. That word called simply means “to proclaim or praise the excellency of Yahweh, to worship Yahweh, or to summon Yahweh by name for help.” When faced with adverse circumstances, much of the world calls on a bottle or looks for a pill to suspend reality. However, as a believer, we have the privilege of calling on the God of Israel, for when we call on God, we are guaranteed to never get a busy signal, and He will never turn a blind eye to our request. In fact, God is waiting for us to call upon Him in the time of distress, for He will not only give us an answer, but He is the answer, and He is the only One who can turn our curse into a blessing. To call upon the Lord also means to put our complete trust in Him and to put our problems into the hands of the Lord. AND JABEZ CALLED ON THE GOD OF ISRAEL His first request that he would bring unto the Lord is a most important statement, “Bless me indeed.” God wants to bless His children, for He is a blessing God. The word blessing means The Bible declares that “Jabez was more honorable than his brethren.” The reason the Holy 30 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST BLESS ME INDEED Call us at 225.768.3072 | Email us at [email protected] | www.crossfireyouthministry.org AND JABEZ CALLED ON THE GOD OF ISRAEL, AND GOD GRANTED HIM THAT WHICH HE REQUESTED “increase.” That very word states that God wants to give us more than what we can even ask or think. We are His children, and as a father naturally wants to give gifts unto his kids, how much more does our heavenly Father want to bless us. In fact, God wants to give us everything that pertains to life and godliness (II Peter 1:3), which is tremendous blessing to us as His children. When I was studying this passage, I started to look at that word blessings, and I would like to take this opportunity to present seven synonyms for blessing that can be tied back to the Cross of Christ, which is the greatest blessing of all. They are as follows: 1. Favor: due to the Cross of Christ and our faith in that finished work, we now have favor with God. 2. Grace: This is one of the greatest blessings of all, which is God’s goodness given to undeserving people. We did not deserve this, but due to the Cross, His grace now flows to us. 3. Approval: Once again, as we look to the Cross of Christ, we now have the approval of God. Many look for approval from others, but when one has the approval of God, one cannot get any better than that. 4. Windfall: How awesome is this! As God has blessed His Son, Jesus Christ, we have the residual windfall that came upon Christ and now comes to us. 5. Gift: the greatest gift that God could give the world was His Son, Jesus Christ, and the greatest gift that we could ever receive is the gift of salvation. have the ability to call on God for whatever we need, and that is due to what Christ has accomplished for us at Calvary’s Cross. WHAT DO GOD’S BLESSINGS CONSIST OF? To look at that of which the blessings of God consist, we need look no further than what is referred to as the chapter of blessing, Deuteronomy, Chapter 28. This chapter gives us an explanation of what the Lord will do for those who keep the Lord’s statutes and His commandments. This we cannot do based upon ourselves, but we can keep these statutes and commandments if our faith is anchored in Christ and Him crucified. The reason is that He, Christ, kept those commandments and statutes perfectly, and since I am in Christ, I am now a law keeper and not a lawbreaker. As a result, we are guaranteed the following: He, Christ, kept those commandments and statutes perfectly, and since I am in Christ, I am now a law keeper and not a lawbreaker. 1. “All these blessings shall come upon you,” which means that the blessings of the Lord will literally chase you down and overtake you. 2. “The Lord shall command the blessings upon you,” which means that at this moment, if we will only believe it, the Lord is commanding blessings upon us. We must believe it, expect it, and receive it. 3. “The Lord shall make you plenteous in goods.” The Lord promises plenty, and the word goods means “everything that we need,” He will supply. 4. “The Lord shall open unto us His good treasure.” The Lord tells us that we as believers literally have access to the treasure house of heaven. 6. Benefit: We, as believers, experience the benefits of the Cross, which are many. Healing is a benefit, as well as the baptism with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with other tongues. In fact, we can honestly say that everything we receive from the Lord is a benefit of the Cross of Christ. 5. “And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail.” There is an old statement that says that if you are not the lead dog, the view never changes. The Lord wants to make us the lead dog. The only thing we must do is seek His kingdom first and His righteousness, and these things will be added unto us. 7. Advantage: we have the greatest advantage of anyone else in the world, for we This article will be continued in a future issue of The Evangelist. www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST FEBRUARY 2015 31 THE JOY OF REPENTANCE by loren larson II Corinthians 7:10-11 - “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.” It is impossible to become a Christian without being confronted with one’s own sin and sinfulness. 32 THE JOY OF WHAT…? Many leaders in the church today do not understand the need for scriptural repentance. First, it is impossible to become a Christian without being confronted with one’s own sin and sinfulness. We do not become a Christian by belonging to a socalled Christian organization or church. We are not a Christian because we act morally (at times) or because we agree with the dogma of a particular moral agenda. We do not take on the true attributes of Christ when we do “good things” for the community. While we certainly want to see morality and good works surface in the life of a Christian, they must originate from a source that is outside of oneself, and this requires a born-again experience. A person must see his or her status as a sinner before he can accept his need for a Saviour. Unless we repent of acts of sin and accept the fact that we are sinners separated from God by sin, we cannot be saved, and we are not in right relationship with God. Therefore, the preacher who does not proclaim the scriptural truths above will never see the joy of repentance on the face of a new believer, FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST that is, the joy and relief felt and expressed by being cleansed by faith in the precious blood of Jesus. In order for people to experience the joy of repentance, they must first see their need for repentance. REPENTANCE DEFINED Repentance is a relatively simple procedure. In it, one recognizes that he is moving in a wrong direction. The conviction of this truth is brought on by the operation of the Spirit of God, in most cases, promoted by the proclamation of God’s Word, the Bible. When a person, saved or unsaved, acknowledges that he is heading down the wrong road, stops, turns, and heads in the opposite direction, he has repented. THE STRENGTH TO CONTINUE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Repentance itself does not bring the supernatural strength to maintain walking in the right direction. Strength for our walk can only come when we maintain the proper object of faith. As we continue to trust exclusively in the finished work of Christ, the grace and strength needed to continue in the THE JOY OF REPENTANCE right direction comes from God through the person of the Holy Spirit. Without faith in the Cross, the individual Christian will be constantly repenting (we should thank God always for this option expressed in I John 1:9). He will come under conviction, head the right way, and find that he doesn’t have the wherewithal to continue. That strength only comes through faith in the Cross. Does a person who fails in the same area again and again truly repent? In most cases, I sincerely believe so! However, without faith in the right object — the Cross — he will succumb to the pull to turn again to the wrong direction. THE BENEFITS OF REPENTANCE The scripture verses above state the benefits of repentance in the life of a believer. There are seven in all: 1. Carefulness means there is a new eagerness to do that which is right. 2. Clearing of yourselves indicates the removal of the guilt, stain, and weight of sins past. 3. Indignation indicates that the believer is much displeased with his past action or activity. 4. Fear indicates that a proper reverence for God has been restored. 5. Vehement desire indicates a great desire to act right. 6. Zeal indicates that a fresh zealousness for right living has surfaced in the heart. 7. Revenge here speaks of the believer’s attitude toward acts of sin. He is trusting God to retaliate against the sin that destroyed him and to restore what was lost due to sin. A preacher who does not understand these benefits withholds them from his congregation when he refuses to preach against sin. We must rebuke sin and point believers to the strength to overcome sin — faith in the Cross of Christ! Why WEBC&S? “In “ the fall of 2013, I took the Life of Christ class, taught by Professor Bob Cornell. Toward the end of the semester, we began learning about Jesus’ crucifixion and all that He suffered — from Gethsemane until His death. We learned about the stripes that He received and the crown of thorns He had to wear. Understanding how much Jesus suffered for me made me realize how little I deserve what He has done for me. It revealed to me how much He loves me because He wasn’t obligated to die for me; He chose to die for me.” Danielle west virginia P.O. Economists ask, “What does an aging population mean for a nation’s productivity, innovation, and savings?” What is ignored is the effect of our aging population on fundamental Christian beliefs. Since the founding of America and its framers, who espoused godliness and moral living with Christianity, there has been an effort by reformists, now called progressives, to remove any semblance of Christianity from society. America’s public educational system is the battleground for the minds of our youth. Governmental education seeks to abolish and expunge any Christian expression by treating it as profanity. How did this all begin? At the time of American independence, the best-selling book was the Bible. The second most popular book was John Cotton’s Spiritual Milk for Babes, the first children’s book published in America. EARLY AMERICAN EDUCATION Early American education was largely a private issue. Education was under the control of the church. America’s oldest universities were started by preachers and churches. Harvard was founded in 1636 by the Puritans. The university’s “Rules and Precepts” stated: “Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life and therefore lay Christ at the bottom, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.” Harvard’s original seal states upon it, “Truth for Christ and the Church.” Yale was established in 1701 with a stated goal that “every student shall consider the main end of his study to wit to know God in Jesus Christ and answerably to lead a godly, sober life.” William and Mary was founded to supply the church of Virginia “with a seminary of ministers” that the “Christian faith may be propagated.” John Knox Witherspoon was a Scots Presbyterian minister and a signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of New Jersey. Because of him, Princeton became known as the seedbed of revolution. Princeton had as one of its founding statements, “Cursed is all learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.” Columbia, previously known as King’s College, had as its purpose to “inculcate upon students’ tender minds the great principles of Christianity and morality.” 34 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST At the time of American independence, the bestselling book was the Bible. The second most popular book was John Cotton’s Spiritual Milk for Babes, the first children’s book published in America. How things did quickly change from a God-fearing, Jesus-loving society to a nation accepting an atheist like John Dewey, who was called “the architect of modern education.” Dewey would say, “There is no God, and there is no soul. Hence, there are no needs for the props of traditional religion.” EDUCATION AND THE CONSTITUTION The matter of education was left to the states by the Founding Fathers. The subject of education is absent from the body of the Constitution of the United States. The Tenth Amendment gave the states power to handle education. The Tenth Amendment states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Government-controlled education began in Boston in 1817. Lobbyists contended that poor families were unable to afford private schooling for their children. Public school advocates pushed for a publicly funded school system in lieu of the fact that 96 percent of Boston’s children were in school, even though there were no truancy laws. The battle raged on for over 30 years as public school advocates persisted toward a “tax-supported, publicly controlled and directed, nonsectarian common school system.” In the 1850s, the decen- CHANGE tralized educational system that demonstrated great results was affected by the governmental schools that began to wipe out sponsors who could not simultaneously support them while paying taxes to support the public school system. The idea that a governmental school would increase enrollment and become a safety net so that poor children could go to school turned out to be the first step in removing Christian influence in education. Governmental education funded by tax dollars gradually achieved its goal of removing religious education and replaced it with humanism. The effort to systematically destroy Christian influence in education initially came from Horace Mann. His goal of centralizing education became a reality through his efforts to establish the Massachusetts Board of Education. Mann supported the idea of social engineering. He believed that the governmental schools would provide the mechanism to create a society in which crimes would be eliminated. It was during Mann’s tenure that the seeds of secularism were planted in the educational system, and the idea of religious instruction would be left to the parents at home. LAWS OF CHANGE The landmark decision by the Supreme Court in the case of Everson v. Board of Education (1947) opened wide the door for public schools to strip Christianity from public schools. The case was the result of Arch Everson filing a lawsuit against Ewing Twp to prevent state taxes from being used to transport parochial students to their Catholic school in Trenton, New Jersey. Justice Hugo Black took Thomas Jefferson’s “wall of separation” statement out of context and gave it its first precedent for future church and state jurisprudence. Black claimed the First Amendment “has erected a wall between church and state. That must be kept high and impregnable. We could not approve the slightest breach.” This meant that from that day forward, the separation of church and state would be applied to all aspects of government, not just the federal level. Several key factors in Justice Black’s background may have inclined him to rule unfavorably against religion. It is a known fact that Justice Black was a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He was not a practicing Christian, and the evidence shows that he did not believe in the supernatural aspects of Christianity. This evidence supports a conclusion that Justice Black was prejudiced against religion in his decision in Everson v. Board of Education and engaged in judicial activism. WALL OF SEPARATION The Danbury Baptist Association wrote to President Thomas Jefferson in 1801, and in the president’s reply, he coined the phrase “a wall of separation between church and state” in assuring the Baptists that government would not interfere with their religious freedoms recently guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. The phrase, “a wall of separation between church and state,” cannot be found in the Constitution or any other founding documents. Justice Black made a decision that was based on a quote from the response letter Jefferson wrote back to Danbury Baptist Association. What the First Amendment says is: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Fathers knew the intension of the First Amendment was simply to prevent the establishment of a single denomination. The letter sent to Jefferson by Danbury expressed their concern that the guarantee of the “free exercise of religion” appeared in the First Amendment. To them, this suggested that the right to religious freedom was a government-granted right rather than a God-granted right. Their concern, as should be ours, was that someday the government might try to regulate religious expression. A court declared in 1799: “By our form of government, the Christian religion is the stablished religion; and all its sects and denominations of Christians are placed on the same and equal footing.” The misapplication and distortion by Justice Black of Jefferson’s response phrase “a wall of separation between church and state” gave license to all in government to use the new philosophy of the court to abolish Christianity from the public sector. The eight words within Jefferson’s letter to Danbury have become a mantra often repeated enough for the masses to believe it as though this is what the founders desired. The unconstitutional phrase was used successfully in the case of Engel v. Vitale — the case that struck down school prayer. The court also redefined the word church in their ruling. Up until 1962, the word church, as used in the phrase “separation of church and state,” was defined to mean a federally established denomination. From 1962, the word church would now mean “a religious activity in public.” Prayer was considered an activity in public and, therefore, deemed unconstitutional based on the new meaning. The meaning of the First Amendment was altered by the courts. Within a year after prayer was successfully removed from schools by the court, two more cases also eliminated Bible reading, Bible classes, and instruction. This was a great departure from our founders. NOW WHAT? Christian education was replaced with humanism and psychology. Have the changes in our schools helped our society? Is moral evolution working to improve humanity, or has it been our demise in America? We will continue our discussion on education next month. Satan knows that if he can get the minds of our youth while they are impressionable, he can then plant seeds of doubt and foster rebellion against Christianity. The Bible teaches us in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” www.jsm.org THE EVANGELIST FEBRUARY 2015 35 LEAVING THE CROSS BEHIND part i by mike muzzerall SAD TO SAY, THE Message of the Cross is viewed by most of Christianity as a simple foundational teaching meant only to introduce Christianity to the initiate. They maintain that once you have begun to mature in Christ, you must leave the principles of the doctrine of Christ behind. In their attempt to support this view, they look to Hebrews 6:1-2. They feel justified in leaving the Cross behind. WHAT DOES HEBREWS 6:1-2 REALLY MEAN? THE JUDAIC SYSTEM IN VERSE 2 “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, (speaks of the ‘first principles,’ which refers to the Old Testament; Christ is the centerpiece of the entirety of the Bible), let us go on unto perfection (speaks of the New Testament sacrifice, the Lord Jesus, and the testament He inaugurated with His work on the Cross); not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works (refers to these Jewish Christians going back to the old sacrificial system, etc.), and of faith toward God (refers to faith toward God in the realm of the Old Testament way, which God will not accept now inasmuch as Jesus has fulfilled the Old Testament law)” (Heb. 6:1, The Expositor’s Study Bible). This seems self-explanatory. So you would think. However, there are those opposing the Message of the Cross who still maintain that these verses instruct us to leave behind the Message of the Cross. The doctrines listed in Hebrews 6:2 do not refer to Christian doctrine, but they refer to the Judaic interpretation and usage of these doctrines to obtain acceptance with God. The plural baptismon “by itself does not mean specifically Christian baptism either in this epistle (Heb 9:10) or elsewhere (Mk. 7:4), but ablutions or immersions such as the mystery religions and the Jewish cultus required for initiates, proselytes, and worshippers in general” (Moffatt) (Robertson’s Word Studies). According to The Expositor’s Study Bible, the laying on of hands refers to the Levitical offerings where a person would lay his hands on the animal to be sacrificed for association and substitution. The resurrection here speaks of the incomplete understanding of Judaism in reference to the resurrection and of eternal judgment. WHAT ABOUT THE RESURRECTION? All of these doctrines are fulfilled in Christ. We no longer attempt to please God through ordinances and laws but through the completed work of Calvary. “Then said he, Lo, I come to do your will, O God. He takes away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Heb. 10:9-10). Leaving the Cross behind and going onward means that you have reckoned what Christ accomplished at Calvary as no longer necessary. My friend, just as Jesus Christ is the central theme of the Bible (the Christocentric theme), the Message of the Cross is the central theme of all New Testament doctrines pertaining to righteousness (Crossocentric theme), if not the whole New Testament. You cannot grammatically separate Verse 2 of Hebrews 6 from Verse 1. This is a continuation of the list started in Verse 1. In Verse 2, we have “the doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.” If we are to believe that the writer is advocating that we no longer preach and teach the Message of the Cross, then we are to also believe that we are to no longer preach and teach about the resurrection. Without the resurrection, there is no Christianity. Likewise, without the Cross, there is no Christianity. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ separate true Christianity from all other religions! 36 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST FULFILLED IN CHRIST »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» Genesis [639 PAGES 11-201] Exodus [639 PAGES 11-202] Leviticus [435 PAGES 11-203] Numbers Deuteronomy [493 PAGES 11-204] Joshua Judges Ruth [329 PAGES 11-205] I Samuel II Samuel [528 PAGES 11-206] I Kings II Kings [560 PAGES 11-207] I Chronicles II Chronicles [505 PAGES 11-226] Ezra Nehemiah Esther [288 PAGES 11-208] Job [320 PAGES 11-225] Psalms [688 PAGES 11-216] Proverbs [320 PAGES 11-227] Ecclesiastes Song Of Solomon [245 PAGES 11-228] Isaiah [688 PAGES 11-220] Jeremiah Lamentations [688 PAGES 11-070] Ezekiel [520 PAGES 11-223] Daniel [403 PAGES 11-224] Hosea Joel Amos [496 PAGES 11-229] Obadiah Jonah Micah »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah [530 PAGES 11-230] Haggai Zechariah Malachi [448 PAGES 11-231] NEW Matthew [625 PAGES 11-073] Mark [606 PAGES 11-074] Luke [626 PAGES 11-075] John [532 PAGES 11-076] Acts [697 PAGES 11-077] Romans [536 PAGES 11-078] I Corinthians [632 PAGES 11-079] II Corinthians [589 PAGES 11-080] Galatians [478 PAGES 11-081] Ephesians [550 PAGES 11-082] Philippians [476 PAGES 11-083] Colossians [374 PAGES 11-084] I Thessalonians II Thessalonians [498 PAGES 11-085] I Timothy II Timothy Titus Philemon [687 PAGES 11-086] Hebrews [831 PAGES 11-087] James I Peter II Peter [730 PAGES 11-088] I John II John III John Jude [377 PAGES 11-089] Revelation [602 PAGES 11-090] Plus Regular Postage, Shipping, and Handling. | All prices in The Evangelist are valid through February 28, 2015. I would pray that you would take full advantage because every one of them is chock-full of blessing and the Word of God. To be sure, anything that will help one to learn more about the Word of God is valuable indeed, and to be sure, these books will do just that! As well, the music is an experience in worship, and we give the Lord all the praise and all the glory. The dates are April 1 — 5, 2015. You don't want to miss it! Incidentally, every combo that we put out, whatever it is, is because the Spirit of God has moved in a phenomenal way in one or more of the songs, especially the lead song. In other words, I’ll guarantee you that you will be blessed. That’s the reason that I would urge you to take advantage of these most excellent offers. Think about this: If they so desire, some 2 billion people can tune in the SonLife Broadcasting Network. How we thank God for this privilege and opportunity. However, we will not rest until every door that God opens around this world will be open to us. We feel that we have a mandate from the Lord that we’ve got to take this Message of the Cross to the entirety of the planet. A lady wrote me the other day saying, “Brother Swaggart, the material we get from your office is not only extremely valuable content wise, but, as well, the material is always first-rate. In other words, the Bibles, the books, the CDs, etc., all and without exception are first-rate quality as it regards production, etc.” I thank the Lord for that testimony. We strive to give the people the very best. It’s for the work of the Lord, so both the quality of the material and the content should be the best. NEW CITIES We just went on in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which covers nearly 1 million homes. As well, there is Seattle, Washington, with approximately 1.25 million homes. Also, we should be airing in Nashville, Tennessee, which is nearly 1 million homes. So, pray that the Lord will work mightily regarding His Word going out in these particular places. We’ve also just gone on a small cable system in Nigeria in the great continent of Africa. You can look elsewhere in this magazine and get the exact channel number, etc. 38 FEBRUARY 2015 THE EVANGELIST PRAY FOR US I’m asking each of you, please, to keep us before the Lord in prayer, even on a daily basis. This means so much to us, and it matters very, very much. God answers prayer, and your intercession before the Lord on our behalf will enable us to do a better job all over the world. As well, we need the financial help of all of you to get this thing done, and I want to say a little more about that, please! As many, if not most of you, know, for the last several months, we have not raised the budget as it regards television airtime. We have had a shortfall of anywhere from $400,000 to $800,000. However, the thing that I want to say to you is that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Also, I want to say that every single time, these funds were made up during the month, with every need being met. How we thank the Lord and you for that. However, at the same time, I know it would be God’s will for the funds that we need to be raised each and every month. As I’ve said several times over television, people write us constantly saying, “Brother Swaggart, where do I pay my tithe?” The answer to that is very simple and easy. Every believer should pay his or her tithe to where he is being fed. That which blesses you, instructs you, and helps you — I’m speaking about learning the Word of God to a greater degree — is where you owe your support, wherever that is. THE READ-N-GROW PICTURE BIBLE It contains more than 1,800 drawings, starting with Genesis 1:1 and going through Revelation 22:21. In other words, it covers the entirety of the Bible in illustration form. If you have a little son or daughter, grandsons or granddaughters, great grandsons or great granddaughters, nieces or nephews, or whomever as it regards young teenagers or preteens, you must get them a copy of the Read-N-Grow Picture Bible. You’ll regret it if you don’t do it. We’ve cut the price down as much as we can, and if you would get as many as 12, which is a case, the price is cut down even more. So, whoever holds this magazine, you must take advantage of this Bible that’s designed especially for children. If you’ll start them out on the Word of God, they’ll never depart from it. BIBLES FOR PASTORS You have helped put nearly 300,000 Bibles into the hands of pastors all over the world. Most of these pastors would not be financially able to buy one of these Bibles. The testimonies that we get into this office from preachers — and I speak of those from Central America, South America, India, Russia, Africa, and, in fact, all over the world — tell us how much this Bible is a blessing and help to them. When you influence a preacher in this capacity, you also influence the entirety of his congregation. I do not personally think there is any mission’s work in the world today that can equal this of which I speak. As well, I do not think there is any study Bible in the world that will open up the Scriptures as much as The Expositor’s Study Bible. Preacher after preacher, plus the laity, as well, tell us, “Brother Swaggart, when I started studying it, I couldn’t put it down.” They will go on to say, “The notes make the text come alive.” Yes, it does! That’s the reason the Holy Spirit helped us to design it so. Thank you so very, very much for your help in this. Thank you for being a part of what God is doing all over the world. In the Master’s service, yours, 1969 [ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5] Unknown to me, two of the station managers called Frances immediately upon receiving the letters. Both of them said essentially the same thing. “We’ll lower the rates on the program to a giveaway basis, but please don’t cancel the program. It’s too beneficial to the people and the station.” The third person, Warren Roberts, didn’t even call. He simply preempted the radio broadcast and went on the air himself, telling the listening audience Jimmy Swaggart was cancelling the program because of a lack of response. “Folks, I don’t feel the program ought to be cancelled,” he insisted, “and even if Brother Swaggart wants to cancel, I’ll play the same tapes over and over until they wear out. If you want the program to stay on, I want you to write him.” Three days later, Frances found a mailbag the postman had left on our front porch. She brought it into the house and with the help of a girl we had previously hired to type a few letters, they opened the pouch. It contained 900 letters and about $3,000 in donations for the radio program. That afternoon, I called home to check on my family. “I’ve got something to tell you,” Frances announced cheerfully. “What’s that?” I asked, curious about her cheerfulness. “Well, over 900 letters and something like $3,000 came in the mail today for the program,” she cried joyfully. I was stunned by the news. That was the last thing in the world I thought she might tell me. I broke down and bawled over the phone. “Oh, that’s God,” I sobbed, “that’s God.” “There’s no doubt about it,” Frances replied, “God wanted us on radio and He performed a miracle to prove it.” At that moment I made up my mind to stay on radio. I began making plans to succeed, instead of fail. That miracle turned me around and changed my attitude in the process. I was there to sink or swim with the radio program. I realized, as never before, the formula for success was simply to follow God’s direction.
