The Larks: Harry Pynn National Champion with Chris Fish just behind and the team trophy for the Club. That trophy never seems to leave the Club. A quarter of the fleet were from WSC, but 5 out of our 11 boats were in the top 9 places. That’s pretty dominant. The Cadets: Henry Mills and Robert Keen ended up in 6th place at the worlds in Poland. They were second GBR boat. The Wayfarers: Possibly not the best year for the WSC Wayfarers. Roger Challis best at 9th and Gordon Harris 10th, and the team trophy for the Club. I think WSC is still waiting for its first National Wayfarer champion. The discussion about the new Hartley boats seems to continue to exercise minds there. The Lasers: Well we don’t yet have anybody figuring in the national champs, but Mark Hodge and Bob Whitehouse have both qualified for the Masters Worlds at Hayling Island in September. Very good luck and best wishes to both of you. The Dragonflies: Yup. We have the National and World champion in our Club too. The Squibs: I expect next year will be the year for your Vice-Commodore to make his mark on the national scene. Within the Club we have had the Regatta and the Adnams Trophy Days; reports elsewhere. Outside the world of fanatical round the buoys racing, there has been lots going on. Graham Harrison has put together a fantastic training programme and has master-minded the acquisition of three brand new Wayfarers largely funded by a very generous donation from the Schlee family – thank you Rosemary, I am sure you will get to read this somehow. Fran Gifford sailed around the UK in her wayfarer in 72 days, starting and finishing at WSC. Now there’s an achievement! And Mike and Jenny Tuckwood continue to produce fabulous food form the newly equipped Galley. As I write this I think of the truly excellent canapés and finger food they produced last night. Scrumptious! Thankyou everybody who works so hard in front of and behind the scenes to make the Club the happy, lively and successful Club that we love. Please look at the forthcoming events lists; get out your diaries and make some entries of events you are going to attend. It will be worth it. Wayfarer International Championships 2010 A fleet of 107 Wayfarers attended the championships held at the Weymouth & Portland sailing Academy out of which 7 were Waldringfield boats. Racing was held in either Portland harbour or Weymouth Bay depending upon the weather conditions, interestingly it was on the lighter wind days that racing was in the harbour due to the steadier wind, over the week conditions were variable between force 1 and force 4. In this large fleet a good start was essential, but with some crews pushing their luck on the start line the black flag became a familiar sight with a number of boats being disqualified for being OCS at the start, after the start the tactics were to find the wind, with only minor considerations for the tide,( unlike Waldringfield ). Overall this was a fantastic week at a great sailing venue, however crews needed to be resilient clocking up over 6 hours in their boats on some days, Unfortunately some Waldringfield boats paid the price of gear failure notably Nigel Steer with a broken Centreboard, proving that success does not come easily at this level of sailing. On the same day Nigel went on to arrange the social event of the week at England’s most ‘out of the way’ pub, showing that Waldringfield Wayfarers can both sail and Socialise. the final overall positions of the Waldringfield boats were :9 Roger Challis & Mark Johnson 10 Gordon Harris & Beth Condie 12 Neil Fletcher & Chas Edwards 27 John Haile & John Parrish 32 Mike Pearce & son 47 Mathew & Margaret Lake 80 Nigel Steer & Keith Vincent The championship overall winner was Mike McNamara. Lark Nationals Harry Pynn and Michael John Gifford have won the 2010 Lark National Championship by the narrowest of margins from Stephen and Chris Videlo. Pynn and Gifford had seized the advantage early in the week by winning races 1 and 2. The Videlos fought back to take the lead equal on points after 5 races setting up a two-horse race. Pynn and Gifford beat the Videlos in both of Wednesday’s races, demonstrating their ability to make their way through the fleet after some poor starts. This provided the opportunity for Pynn/Gifford to wrap up the Championship by beating the Videlos in Thursday’s 8th race. They looked on target for this having covered the Videlos throughout the race only to drop back following a 720 on the penultimate reach. It later transpired that the 720 was unnecessary and Pynn was duly awarded the Duckhams dress for gross underachievement. In Friday’s showdown the Videlos were lucky to escape without punishment after finding themselves to windward of the pathfinder on the gate start. The race was restarted and a previously steady breeze weakened. Half way up the beat it looked as though the boats on the left were winning. Suddenly the breeze filled in on the right giving the Videlos their chance. The Videlos fought their way up to 1st after Matt and Emma White found themselves too low on the second reach and then Chris Fish and Beth Condie went for the wrong windward mark following a change of course. Pynn and Gifford managed to make their way up to 4th which was just enough to take the championship. Behind the 2 leaders, places 3 to 10 were hotly contested. Nigel Hufton and Andy Douglas sailed consistently at the end of the week to take 3rd place ahead of Chris Fish and Beth Condie in 4th. Matt White and daughter Emma took race 4 in emphatic style a long way ahead of silver fleet winners Chris White and Lucy Evans. James Stewart and Katrina Gilbert won race 6, but their joy was short lived as a big header capsized them to windward while well placed in race 7. Fish and Condie won race 7, holding off 2009 winners Alan Krailing and Edd McArdle on the finish line. Race 8 was won by Emma Harris and Becky Priest who led all the way having been pathfinder. In the silver fleet, Jane Alexander and Rachel Rhodes were 2nd behind Chris White and Lucy Evans. Fiona Gray and Aaron Woolf coming 3rd. The crew’s race was as competitive as ever with 23 boats on the start line. Becky Priest and Emma Harris took the race from Michael John Gifford and Harry Pynn. 14 year old Emma White crewed by father Matt came 3rd to the biggest cheer from spectators. 17 year olds, Tim Linsell and Aaron Woolf came 4th, having led for the first trapezoid lap. East Coast 50- Waldringfield SC and Deben Yacht Club This took place on June 19th as planned despite near hurricane force winds (well gusting 35 knots). This called for a minor rethink by the Safety team and OOD and we thought racing with the DYC in Methersgate Reach was a step too far. Both we and DYC ran races by the respective clubhouses, so we will never know which club would have gained the upper hand in 2010. The first race was a Points Treasure Hunt. The idea for this came from David Pearce and James Skellorn provided invaluable advice having run the first similar event at the Royal Harwich YC the week before. The object of the exercise was to reduce a strictly non compulsory fine of £20 by rounding various buoys and reporting back to the committee boat after each rounding. Buoys were allocated points depending on their distance from the clubhouse Boudicca was moored slightly upriver of the Clubhouse so each mark rounding was a port hand sausage including the committee boat. Boadicea was ably manned by Howard Ryan and Jo McArdle whose counting skills were exemplary. Jo also showed a new talent for extricating the residual fines from reluctant sailors who were intent only on getting warm and dry on their return. The race was handicap time limited and each competitor was meant to declare to Cadet World Championship 2010 This year’s worlds were held in Puck in North West Poland on the Baltic Sea where 80 world team boats travelled to from Great Britain, Poland, Australia, Belgium, Spain, Argentina, Ukraine, Belarus, Holland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Russia. In addition there were 70 boats also competing in the promotional fleet. The racing area was protected by a 30 km spit of land effectively creating Results: 1st overall Helm Crew Residual £ fine Wayfarer 8200 Matthew Lake Tom Chippendale 4 Wayfarer 8646 Neil Collingridge Anne Spalding 5 Lark 2500 Fiona Gray Aaron Woolf 7 OK 538 Robert Deaves 7 OK 2136 Jon Fish 7 (Tiebreaker result in favour of 538 as he did not capsize.) The waters were also very shallow being 5m at the deepest and hence very choppy. The Polish Nationals took place the week before while all the other nations trained. The first week was hot and very sunny and provided experience for most wind directions and strengths. We learnt that the regatta would have some extremely shifty racing and that if we were to have a good overall result in the regatta we would have to use the middle of the race course. The regatta began with GBR getting off to dreadful start, a professional Polish In the evening we were entertained at the DYC with the formal opening of their new balcony and a hot meal. Later on there was a jazz band for us to remember Deben Weeks of old. The event raised more than £300 at Waldringfield and we hope to do much better with the joint event with DYC next year. So if you missed out on the fun of novelty races with arbitrary penalties and the chance to sail against the DYC there will be another chance. EC 50 will be back. Perfect weather, Excellent Socials, Lively music and loads of fun. If you were not there this year, make sure you get there next year. Thanks also to William Sudell and his organising team. The Regatta shore events provided the usual wacky mix of sack filling, cork hunts and blindfold rowing in between the more conventional, but hard fought, swimming and running races (too many winners and losers to mention). The shovel race and the three legged races are also spectacles not to be missed as arms and legs seek perfect synergy in adrenalin fuelled bursts of energy. Fancy dress themes aim to mix the topical with the nautical, this year being World Cup Wallies, They Call Me Mr Squib and Strictly Come Crabbing. The younger club members produced their usual high standards to give the judges, led by Ali Sudell, an almost impossible job. This type of family fun is the essence of Waldringfield and will hopefully continue long after the time somebody wrestles the microphone away from me! Many thanks to all participants and helpers. Patrick Cooney And the racing was organised to the usual high standard we have come to expect at WSC. Results below.
