It is said that when the Hindu Majapahit Emperors moved from Java to Bali in the 15th century
that most of the intellectuals, artists, priests and musicians moved with them. Perhaps that is
why today there are so many skilled artisans on the idyllic island. Our hand carved, sustainable
albasia wood mirrors and new Fair Trade holiday ornaments are beautifully carved by skilled
craftsmen who carry on a generations old art, while the recycled aluminum containers and
ornaments add eco-chic flair to any setting.

Timeless Atta grass purses &
handbags are woven from a
vine indigenous to the foothills
of Bali’s volcanoes. It is split
and woven into purses, baskets,
etc. by master weavers from
one area of Bali. The rich brown
color is created by smoking the
artifacts in a smoke house using
a fire of honey soaked coconut
husks. The color will not wear
off nor will the slight smoky
scent. Some purses have black
designs which are woven with
the root of the vine.

for table
Our zen placemats & runners are hand woven from cotton and vetiver root and are tied together with vetiver
tassels. They can be machine washed in cold water and laid flat to dry. Their gentle scent cleans the room of
kitchen smells and also makes them great as drawer liners. The solid color napkins are hand loomed, Balinese
cotton endek & the printed napkins, placemats and table cloths are all original zen zen designs.

Using only sustainable natural treasures of land and sea, zen zen
has created a colorful and classic line of table top items. Everything
is food safe and should be hand washed and handled with care.
The mango wood and resin bamboo inlay line is produced for us
by talented artisans in Bali as are the woven atta grass items and
boxed wooden coasters. While our beautifully hand
crafted capiz shell chargers, salad bowls and serving
spoons as well as mother of pearl accessories are
made in a family workshop in Java.

For 17 years we have been working together with a talented group of artisans in their village
cooperative ceramics workshop. Whether creating original zen zen designs, bringing them there
first “big order” or helping them to expand and improve production techniques; we always enjoy
CERAMICS our collaborations. The alluring variations in color of the celadon glaze create a natural palate of
greens as a back drop for crickets, frogs, flowers and bees. All tea pots, tea cups & salt & pepper dispensers come in colorful
fabric lined, hand woven bamboo boxes.

capiz chimes
Some 70 years ago several fisher families moved from Madura to Java’s Eastern coast because of the profusion
of sea life. During stormy weather, after all the nets were mended, they began making handicrafts from discarded
shells. Capiz shells, or Jingle Oysters grow like weeds in shallow sea beds. Before the fishermen got creative, they
were only collected for the meat and the shells were discarded. Now nothing is wasted. Our comprehensive line
of capiz shell chimes were designed by Andrea Phillips with both beauty and economy
in mind. The marvelous colors and sweet tinkling of the shells will complement any
interior or garden. In addition, all the chimes come conveniently packaged and
with the ZEN WIND label to merchandise marvelously in any retail environment.

About us and what makes our product “green”
In the early 90s, when zen zen was young, we used to tell people that we only used natural, ecologically
sustainable materials and they usually had no idea what we were talking about. Thank goodness, terms like
recycle, green, eco-friendly and carbon neutral are now becoming house hold words. That’s great news for
the planet. As for us, we have been essentially green since 1992, and we stay that way by following these
basic principals:
* We use ecologically sustainable natural materials such as bamboo, vetiver, capiz shell and organic
cotton. We also try to recycle as much as possible. We make patchwork and carpets from our fabric scraps
and decorations on our bags too. Everything is hand made by village artisans or in our Balizen in-house fair
trade workshop with the smallest carbon foot-print we can manage. We utilize, sustain, support & promote
traditional, indigenous village handicrafts, so they can be enjoyed by this and future generations. We train
our workers and outside suppliers to improve efficiency & sustainability as well as the 5 Rs – reduce, re-use,
recycle, refuse & repair. We also believe strongly in continuous improvement. We are always looking to make
things more efficient and sustainable.
* We are a registered fair trade company, Fair Trade Federation member. This means that everyone we
employ, and our subcontractors too get a fair living wage and have good working conditions, and are planet
conscious too. Our Bali workshop employees all have health insurance & pension plan & Friday afternoon
sports. But for us Fair Trade means more than that. To us fair-trade means fair to everyone – from our most
basic material suppliers/growers to the end retail users. No one gets a huge markup while someone else is
getting little, and our customers get a really good value for their money too.
* We support and are involved in sustainable education, re-forestation, organic farming, community
empowerment projects and contribute to the GreenSchool Bali scholarship fund.
In short - we believe strongly in providing a quality, ecologically sustainable product at the best price
possible, delivered in a relaxed & pleasing way that causes maximum customer satisfaction as well as an
appreciation of craftsmanship & global cultures.
About the designer and what zen zen means
The name “zen zen” comes from a Japanese expression which loosely translates to “but of course” - that
natural serendipity which occurs when you’re doing something positive for the planet. This has always been
the mission of company owner, Andrea Phillips. She continuously works to create a beautiful line of products
that are handmade from sustainable materials and all with her personal touch.
“My parents called me busy fingers when I was little,” Andrea says. “I was always making something. I love
art and dance, crafts, language and culture, collaboration and creating great products that make people smile
. . . Essentially, through my designs I strive to create more enjoyment for people in their daily lives & share
the abilities & sensibilities of one culture with another so people can feel like they are part of one big global
family . . . like my own.”
Andrea Phillips was born in Los Angeles. She lives & works in Bali with her husband Nyoman, a Bali native &
their two children.
