Hannah Connuck and Sam Kennedy report on how their class
THE LIBERTY POST March 13, 2012 Volume 1 Issue I News for the students by the students Hannah Kipple names school newspaper THE Liberty Post REPORTER: What inspired you to come up with the name Liberty Post? Hannah: Liberty comes from Liberty Valley and Post is a cool word for news. I thought it worked. REPORTER: Did you think you would win? Hannah: No, I thought there were just too many people voting, I never thought I would win. REPORTER: How did it feel to win? Hannah: I was so excited. As soon as I got home I told my parents, and they were so proud of me. Mac-n-Cheese Mania Sweeps Through Valley Reporter: Hannah Marsh I love mac and cheese because of the sweet, warm taste of the melting cheese. Also, the smell fills the air of the room once you take the wonderful cheese covered noodles out of the oven. If you are very sneaky and if no one is around, you can carefully and quietly sneak into the kitchen and take a piece of the steaming noodles. Some people in the world like homemade macaroni, and other people like boxed. I think that people like homemade macaroni because you can add as much cheese and noodles as you want. Also you can add anything into it like spices and ham. I think the reason people like boxed is because you don’t have to take too much time to make it, and because kids can even make it themselves. My favorite kind of macaroni would probably be homemade. I conducted a survey where students at Liberty Valley were able to vote on which kind of mac and cheese you liked the best. When the votes were counted, the winner was homemade macaroni with 84 votes; boxed mac and cheese received 67 votes. Students at Liberty Valley seem to like that steamy homemade goodness! Over the Rainbow Mac and Cheese 1 lb. cooked noodles; 1 stick of butter; 1/2 cup each of Munster, Medium Sharp, and Monterey Garlic cheeses; 1 cup of Velveeta Cheese, cubed; 2 cups of half and half cream; 2 large eggs, slightly beaten; salt and pepper to taste. Mix it all up and put it in the oven until it is golden brown and delicious! Well, on January 23rd, Mrs. McCormick’s class celebrated Chinese New Year with these decorations. Making them wasn’t easy...It took chaos, confusion and clutter to create these decorations, and a whole lot of team work. At some points Mrs. McCormick did not think it would work, and to be honest, neither did a lot of us. But it did and now when you walk in the door you are stunned by a ginormous Chinese dragon hanging from the ceiling. To make the dragon we used lots of material: crepe paper, fabric, tissue paper, markers, and lots of tape. First we decided as a group how we would make it and who would be responsible for making each section. An extreme topic of debate was how to make the body. The decision was made to sew the body onto a tube. We then broke into groups to create the head, body, tail, and background. For the finishing touch, we hung it from the ceiling! During our celebration, thanks to John’s Asian Cuisine, we enjoyed fortune cookies, spring rolls, and oranges. We played a game where you had to use chopsticks to move grapes from one bowl to another as fast as you could. This would have been a real challenge if Mrs. Brookhart, Director of Curriculum, wouldn’t have taught us how to use them! The teams tied, so every student was awarded a red envelope with a coin inside! Mr. Johns also stopped by our celebration. He said, “It was so great to see the whole class working together and being involved in such a unique experience. The amount of work that went into creating the dragon must have been amazing.” Reporter John Maize hits the beat asking, “What Makes Liberty Valley a Great Place?” Jayden Koser 4th “I think it is the teachers who help us.” Ben Malloy 4th Reid Coppola 3rd “All of the of the specials, the “The teachers are nice and the “Sometimes teachers let us classes , and lunch.” food is great!” do origami!” Zack Norfolk 5th 1 Mrs. Patterson “It’s the way people treat each other as a family.” What’s Hot In Spring Fashion 2012 ? Restaurant Critic Sam Betz Gives Local Danville Diner 4 Stars The other day I had lunch with my own lovely mother at Pappas which happens to be my favorite restaurant. Pappas is located at 312 Mill Street in Danville. It is truly a town icon. It is a diner-like restaurant that opens at the crack of dawn and closes soon after lunch. When you walk in you notice right away that it is smallish; one may even say, a hole in the wall. There is only one row of booths and a long counter with spinning padded stools, just like the old time soda fountain places. My mother and I chose our seats at the counter. I decided on the cheeseburger and What are Box Tops? Reporter Emily Heath The box top business was started by General Mills in 1996. In 1998 more than 30,000 schools participated in the program. In 2002, box tops doubled in size to include Pillsbury and many other brands. In 2004, 100 million dollars was earned by over 82 thousand schools in the nation. Since 1996 box tops have helped American schools by donating over 400 million dollars! I caught up with the Liberty Valley box top coordinator, Mary Heath and asked her about the process. She checks every expiration date and keeps track of how many each class brings in. They are put in bundles of 50. Each bundle of 50 is worth 5 dollars. Then she ships them to General Mills in Golden Valley, Minnesota. General Mills sends a check to Home and School twice a year. In 2011 our school received over 1,800 dollars. The box top bins are in the main hallway by the teachers’ mailboxes. Remember to put your teachers’ name on the bag when you turn the in. The class who has the most box tops will get to D-U-N-K Mr. Johns! Look out Mr. Johns, it’s on like Donkey Kong! fries. The fries were just how I like them: extra crispy, fresh cut, with lots of salt and ketchup. The cheeseburger was hot off the grill and served on a nice soft bun. To drink, I had a scrumptious cherry coke made the old fashioned way with fountain coke and real cherry syrup. The menu at Pappas is just perfect. It is a little bit of everything, but not too much. I know for a fact that their pancakes are also delicious. I think everyone should give Pappas a try. Tell your taste buds to be ready. I give our local diner a perfect 4 stars! Costa Concordia reporter Cora Charlton American Idol News Tabby Reedy Reporter Here we go again! It is now season eleven of American Idol! Can you believe it? This season started back on January 18th and has been full of surprises. The judges are Jennifer Lopez also known as J.Lo., Steven Tyler, and of course the veteran Randy (the Dawg) Jackson. So many voices, some good and some, well...not so good. Also, some of the same people from last season are trying out again. Some of the new talent for American Idol is even from our own back yard. Let’s hear it for the black and yellow Pittsburg, Pennsylvania! Who knows maybe the next American Idol will be from right here in good old Danville! Recently, the 1,000 foot cruise ship the Costa Concordia, hit a reef off the coast of Italy. The captain was having dinner at the time of the wreck. He managed to get to safety before everyone else was off of the ship. It was the largest ship in Italy, and it was built in 2006. The shipwreck is very similar to the crash of the Titanic. The Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. There were more than 4,200 people on board. People around the world are very angry that the captain left the ship before all of the passengers were off and safe. Many people are sad about the loss of life. Battle of the Books - Third Grade Reporter Jordan Brookhart In Battle of the Books for 3rd grade, twenty teams competed. This year two teams tied for 1st place. The teams were from Mrs. Kline’s class and Mrs. Mohr’s class. There were 7 or 8 students on a team. The 1st round was for the odd numbered teams. The 2nd round was for the even numbered teams. The 3rd round was the championship round. On the computer, questions were made up for the kids to answer with their clickers. Battle of the Books was held in the gym. Next year’s contest will probably be even better than this School Store Up and Running Reporters Abigail Calvert and Kira Snyder Liberty Valley Intermediate School has their very own school store! They sell loads of pencils, pens, grippers, and lead refills. The spending limit is $2.00 per person. You can visit the store at lunch. It is open on the last Friday of every month. It rocks to have a school store! All of the kids love it! Photo by John Maize 2 Saying Goodbye to a Joe Paterno by Erin Cope and Nathan Snyder Joe Paterno, known by many as “JoePa” has died at the age of 85. Joe Paterno was born on December 21, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. While attending Brown University Joe played quarterback for the football team. Joe had plans to become a lawyer, but the head coach of Brown was moving to Penn State and persuaded Joe to join him as the team’s assistant coach. Later he became the head coach of Penn State and remained in that position for the next 46 years. Under his leadership, the Nittany Lions won two national championships, went undefeated five times and finished in the top 25 national rankings 35 times, according to his official Penn State biography. Joe had 409 career wins. Among his other accomplishments, he has donated millions of dollars to Penn State University. The library at Penn State is named after him. “His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled,” his family says. He will be missed dearly by many. He is also famous for his “grand experiment”, which was his idea of holding his players to high moral and academic standards. Super Bowl in Review By Peyton Persing A great game almost everybody knows about is the Super Bowl. This is the game between the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) and the winner of the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFC winner was the New York football Giants. The AFC winner was the New England Patriots. This year a local boy participated in it, too. His name is Henry Hynoski. He is from Southern Columbia. The game started out with the Patriots winning the toss. They decided to defer and the Giants received the ball. The kick off got the Giants to their own 33 yard line. Then Manning (number 10) had a 19-yard pass to Hakeem Nicks (number 88). The Giants had to punt a few plays later. When the Patriots got the ball after the punt, they were pinned against their goal line. Justin Tuck blitzes the goal line and a safety was called. When the Giants got the ball after the “safety punt”, they drove down and scored a 2-yard touchdown pass. It was from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz (number 80). After Cruz’s salsa dance, the Giants got the ball through the up rights, and that put them up 9-0. When the Patriots get the ball back in the second quarter, they drove down and Stephen Gostkowski hit a 29-yard field goal to improve their score to 3. Ninkovich causes Lawrence Tynes to make his second field goal making the score now 17-15 Patriots were winning ending the third period. Next, the Giants get it after the field goal and punt the ball away to Tom Brady and his Patriots. Early in the fourth, line backer Chase Blackburn grabs an interception. Each team had another drive and they both punted on them. The drive ended up in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady (number 12) to running back Danny Woodhead (number 39). That puts the Patriots up 10-9, and it stayed that way for the rest of the half. New England got the ball back for the halftime kick off. They ended up driving down the field and the Patriots increased the score to 17-9 with a touchdown. When the Giants got the ball after the kick off they drove down to the Patriots 20yardline, but some mishaps occurred and they had to kick the field goal. Lawrence Tynes (number 9) made it so it wasn’t a waste of a 37-yard field goal. The score is 15-12, but the Pats are still winning. The Giants got the ball back starting from their own 12-yard line. The drive was a success when a great play occurred; it was Manning to Mario Maningham (number 82)-a 38-yard reception that Bill Belicheck challenged and the challenge failed. Finally the Giants score a touchdown from Ahmad Bradshaw on the ground, putting them up 21-17. It stayed that way and the New York football Giants won their 4th franchise Super Bowl and Eli Manning won the MVP for the game. Henry Hynoski also had some good plays. Not bad for a boy from central Pennsylvania. When the Patriots got the ball, Justin Tuck had a sack on third down forcing a 3and-out. The giants drive back into scoring position but a third down sack by Rob Coleman Cush: Ironmen end up on top of Shik Photos by Kylee Cush There was a clash of two very good teams recently at Danville High School: Danville Ironmen versus Shikellamy Braves! Tyler Pratt and gang jumped out to a 6-0 lead for Shik, but Andrew Andreychick brought the Ironmen back, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. Shik was up by four at the end of the first. Danville came back in the 2nd to go into halftime leading by three. The defensive powerhouse led by Ross Litz only let Shik score seven points in the second quarter. Number 4, Ernie Tyler for Shikellamy would go down with an injury in the last minutes of the second quarter. Shik came out strong in the third quarter to tie it up, 43 all at the end of the third. Brett Berg truly had an amazing game, some spectators said after. He would finish the game with a total of 23 points. 3 The fourth quarter was back and forth, but with Danville pulling out to a seven point lead with a minute to go, the only thing Shik could do was try. The final score was 59-54 with Danville on top. Tyler Pratt would finish the game with 21 points. I think that it could have been a whole different game if Ernie Tyler didnʼt get injured. Some people might say thatʼs the championship game right there. March is Women’s History Month Het Patel Dr. Gertrude Elion is a famous biochemist. This film is based on the true events of the most horrible event on Earth, the Holocaust. The setting is a Danish town in 1943. The main characters are a non-Jewish family who are members of the Nazi resistance. They hid Jewish people inside an attic-like closet space and gave them food and whatever they needed to survive. This was against Nazi law to help or hide the Jews. The family’s biggest mission was to get the Jewish people to the boats that would take them to safety in Switzerland. The Nazis were expecting 7,500 Jews to arrive at the concentration camp (a horrible place where Jews are put to death) but thanks to the efforts of this family the number was lessened to 436. I think it is so amazing that one family saved so many lives! I give this film five stars! Dolphin Tale Hannah Kipple Megamind Olivia Crumb This movie was created by Dream Works Studios. It is the most outgoing movie for all heros and villains. The villainous hero with the gigantic blue head has the voice of Steve Carrel. I personally give the movie three and a half stars. The movie has you on the edge of your seat at some parts. I still believe that it could have had more action and suspense scenes. I think the moral of the story is you can change no matter what your past was. When I saw previews of this movie I thought it would be the same as any other; villain stays villain and the superhero, Metroman, is the biggest role of the movie. I was surprised that this movie was different. I think this movie stands out from other Dream Works creations. “Dolphin Tale” is a true story about a boy who finds a dolphin with a rope tied around her tail. The boy is instrumental in rescuing the dolphin. After being rescued, the dolphin is taken to an aquarium to be cared for. The boy becomes very close to the dolphin. She ends up losing her tail because the rope cut off her circulation. She has to get a fake one called a prosthetic. It took a couple of tries to make the right tail for her. The whole time the boy stays by her side, going to the aquarium everyday. He helps her learn to swim with her new prosthetic tail. I encourage you to watch the movie “Dolphin Tale” because it is a family movie with a happy ending. Should Fifth Graders Be Able to Play Video Games Rated Mature?? Fifth graders should be able to play M rated video games because it teaches them to be mature. It also lets kids have fun. Lastly, it gives kids a bigger choice of games to play. Fifth graders should be allowed to play rated M video games because it teaches them to be mature. If your parents don’t allow you to play any rated M games then that means you can’t play any war games and even some football games. Another reason fifth graders should be able to play rated M video games is because it gives the gamer a wider selection of games to choose from. And when you are eleven you don’t want to be playing talking animal games. Fifth graders should be allowed to play M rated video games because they are fun. When it is raining and you don’t have anything else to do you probably play a video game. When you look at your games and they are all boring that just makes your day worse. Liberty Valley Responds... Calla Reader:No Carson Shultz No Ryan Brouse: Yes Jacob Nelson : Yes Kellen Mills : Yes as long as they are responsible Emily Oswald: No Mrs. Furguson: No Bridget Finn: No Briana McCormick : Absolutely not Kaiden Kurzawa: Absoutely yes Tate Berkey: Sure I guess Kailey Getz: No Priya Barua: No Sophia Muccillo: Probably not Many people don’t realize but I have come to the conclusion that fifth graders should not play video games rated M for Mature. They are not appropriate for kids. I also believe that other games that are not rated M are a lot better, and also that video games are altogether unhealthy. Mature rated video games are not appropriate for kids because they could be violent. They will set a bad example for behavior. Also, killing in games will give kids bad ideas. Other games can be a lot better than Mature rated games. Educational games like Study Island, can teach better things. I also think that kids can spend their time gaming in better ways. Games are altogether unhealthy. Playing outside is more fun. If you read books, you can have fun reading and learning. You could study for a test. Fifth graders should not be allowed to play M rated video games because they are not appropriate, other games are more fun, and they are unhealthy. In conclusion that is why fifth graders should be able to play video games. Frank &Rob Momoko Rolle Essayist 4 Tate Berkey Ty Hummer Essayist
