April 17, 2015
Dear Parent or Guardian,
It’s hard to believe it’s already April 17th; time is certainly flying this year. While many of us are thankful
the weather is becoming more Spring-like, we have many reasons, as a school, to be thankful.
One of the many reasons we have to be thankful for this year is the hard work of our Parent Teacher
Organization. Every year, members of our PTO selflessly give of their time and resources to improve
our school. This year is certainly no different. One on-going goal of our PTO is to build a sense of
community between home and school. They have strived to do just that by providing inexpensive, fun
evenings for the families of Prairieiview. This year we were treated to a movie night, a bingo night, a
fall festival and a weekend bowling outing. Our PTO continually supports all families by donating
money to fund field trip opportunities and offset costs associated with those experiences. They have
organized and provided engaging, learning opportunities for the students of Prairieview through the use
of assemblies and our upcoming Discovery Day. Finally, they have committed to continue to support
our school’s efforts to increase technology integration by purchasing iPads to use in the classrooms.
As a school, we cannot thank the PTO members enough for their continued support of the students,
families and teachers of Prairieview School. If this sounds like a group you would be interested in
learning more about, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the PTO. Your involvement with
this group would be greatly appreciated and ensure the PTO’s ability to continue to support the
students of Prairieview. Their contact information can be found on the accompanying newsletter.
Springtime is also a time we see an increase in our before and after school traffic, which means it’s a
great time to reiterate our arrival and dismissal procedures to ensure the safety of our children. We ask
for your support in the following areas:
Car Riders/Parking- Children should arrive at school between 7:50 and 8:00. When dropping off or
picking up your child in the turnaround, please stay in your car, pull-up as far as possible, and form
two lanes. If you drop off or pick up your child at the main doors, please park your car in the visitor lot
and walk your child between the school’s entrance and your vehicle. There is no parking in the
turnaround during or after school hours. It serves as an emergency lane and is for moving vehicles
only. Please do not block the handicap parking areas or the parking lot entrances.
Bus Riders- Please review the bus rules and procedures with your children. At bus stops children
should stay off the road and remain on the sidewalk while waiting for the bus.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call (847) 543-4230.
Sincerely,
Vince Murray

Estimados Padres o Tutores Legales,
(Discovery Day).
Sinceramente.

Cool Tool
Initiative means: motivated to do things, to act or take
charge before others do, take action without being told
PURPOSE OF THE LESSON/WHY IS IT IMPORTANT
1. Shows others that you respect them and your surroundings
2. Shows that you are driven and motivated to be responsible
TEACHING EXAMPLES
1. You just finished eating dinner with your family. You notice the pile of dirty
dishes in the sink. You can demonstrate initiative by washing, rinsing or
drying the dishes without being asked.
2. You just get home from school and know you have homework that needs
to be done. You can demonstrate initiative by sitting down in a quiet spot
and getting started with being asked.
3. You are looking for some new books to check out at the library. You
notice some books scattered on the floor. You can demonstrate initiative
by picking the books up and returning them to the correct location.
When we show initiative we make others and ourselves feel
1. important
2. cared for
3. proud

Dear Parents,
Our school is participating in a fun summer reading project: the Scholastic Summer
Reading Challenge, featuring Read for the World Record. The Summer Reading Challenge
unites students from around the globe in an attempt to set a new world record for most
minutes read this summer!
Studies show that kids who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed
during the school year. This summer-long reading campaign is designed to motivate all
children to read more so they maintain and improve their academic skills.
The world record attempt begins May 4 and concludes September 4, 2015. The total
logged reading minutes, along with the top 20 schools, will be published in the 2016 edition
of the Scholastic Book of World Records.
Here are a few simple ways to help your child become a record-breaking reader:
• Set a goal together and encourage reading throughout the summer with library
visits, story time at home, and conversations about books. Let your child see you
reading.
• Encourage your child to participate and track reading minutes either with a paper
log or online at www.scholastic.com/summer. It’s a kid-friendly, safe online
community where students can be part of a record-setting global team, log
reading minutes, and enjoy activities geared for all ages.
• Track our school’s reading progress at www.scholastic.com/summer.
• Download summer reading booklists chosen specifically for your child’s age at
www.scholastic.com/parents.
To learn more, visit www.scholastic.com/summer. Make reading a big part of your
family’s summer fun!

Queridos padres:
World Records.
www.scholastic.com/summer.
www.scholastic.com/parents.
