View from the Sky
Mel Crichton, SchussBoomer editor
Back in Montana after a hectic Christmas season in
the Heartland, and as expected, way too many tourists are crowding my personal ski runs. But come
January 4 they will be gone, and the silence will be
deafening. This month I will be riding those 4 and 6
place chairs all alone… poor me!
As you may know, Big Sky can no longer claim the
title of America’s Biggest Skiing. Vail Corp flexed its
muscle (i.e. its purse) and bought Utah’s Canyons
Ski area (the old Park West to you old timers) and
combined it with next-door Park City Resort (also
recently purchased ) to form a NEW Park City Resort boasting 7300 acres!!! So you folks on the PC
trip are in for a lot of skiing!!!

Please keep the club notified of any changes in
address, phone, or email. Marilyn Rader is our

updates if you let her know…...

The Prez Speaks….
Phil Buehler
Let’s hope Phil is enjoying his vacation in San
Francisco. I understand his goal was a pilgrimage to the old Whiskey-A-Go-Go, but I think that
might be an alternative lifestyle hangout now.
Can’t wait to read his report in the next issue.
WELCOME

OK, Boyne Corp.… the gauntlet has been thrown
down, but please let’s NOT think about expanding
our measly 5800 acres by developing the other
6000 or so acres on the back side of the mountain… aside from Christmas, and maybe spring
break, there’s nobody here, and spreading skiers
thinner will just create a problem for our overworked
ski patrol…. They are too busy blasting potentialavalanche terrain for us ….
Let’s think MORE SNOW and go skiing !!!!

“SALES CALLS, INTERSTATE DRIVING, ANTIQUE SHOP PIT STOPS”
Lisa Sindelar
Some of you may know that my day job is a little crappy…no, but seriously, I sell janitorial supplies to convenience stores. For example, if you use the restrooms at a Circle K, think of me when you notice the fancy “CK”
logo soap dispensers. I have been selling for 15+ years, and have logged many thousands of miles behind the
steering wheel of the company-issued Ford Fusion, seeing all of the great Midwest/Ohio Valley area.
And as most sales people can tell you, we have our favorite “stops” during our travels. Sure, I have certain
truck stops where I get food and gas, but I have also figured out some of the best antique malls to visit…and
to shop for old/antique skis!!
Thus, my new obsession is decorating our old home with skis…
It started when I spotted this pair (left) at Heart of Ohio Antique
Center (I-70, exit 62)…I passed them up, but stopped by a year
later. It was meant to be that I purchase them then…
Months passed, and another trip took me through… I had to
stop, and boy, did they help me out! And the collection
started.
This pair (right) blended in perfectly in the newly remodeled guest
bedroom…
This kid’s pair has graced the Indy Ski Club’s Penrod booth
many times…—–>
This pair (left) started my “Michigan” collection; a steal at $10!!
Highway 12, east of Coldwater Michigan is a must stop for me
when in that area…
Following pure logical sense, I find more pairs in Michigan, Ohio, and
other parts of the midwest than in Kentucky! Surprisingly, I found
this pair in Missouri…This funky kid’s pair will likely find a home
in a bedroom, yet to be remodeled…(right)
And, this is the first pair purchased at a local market in Indy…
hanging out in the front foyer.
Not pictured is one
other pair of blue
kid’s skis that has never made it out of my back window of my car!!
At this point, I am becoming more picky on the look/age/color of the skis I purchase, and I’m running out of corners and nooks in the house.
So…..now I’ve moved on to license plates, as they stage very well on window sills!!!! Quite often, Dana’s first
question upon my arrival home from a trip is if I did any antique shopping.
Anybody want to go for a drive and an antique shop pit stop??!!
Editor’s note…Lisa failed to mention Dana’s skis from the 90’s in the basement. Anybody else hanging on to old stuff
that nobody should put on snow anymore?
We held our annual Christmas Party (or Holiday Party, if that floats your boat) at Hillcrest Country Club in early December,
Dozens of club members and guests enjoyed a great sit-down dinner, fantastic bartenders, Christmas carols led by Marilyn
and Priscilla, and a whole lot of socializing. Hillcrest donated a golf outing for four, which was auctioned off with proceeds
to special Olympics. (By the way, contact President Phil to volunteer to help with Indiana
Special Olympics 2016 in January) The high bidders were a consortium of Johnny O, Kristy
Williams, Mike Rees and Randy Ridgeway,
Here are a few photos from that special evening…...

Priscilla’s Corner,
Priscilla Johnson trips VP
The ski season is upon us and the trips are gearing up to go west to enjoy the mountains! There is snow,
snow, snow so conditions should be good. Our first trip goes to Vail on January 9 and should have super skiing. I have just returned from a Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council weekend to Vail and Beaver Creek sponsored by our tour group, Winter Ski and Sport. Got out of Denver before the two feet that fell on Monday
evening. There were twelve of us including Cleveland, Fort Wayne , Duneland ( Crown Point), Indianapolis, and
eight from various ski clubs in the Chicago area. We visited properties in Beaver Creek in anticipation of “
Chicago Week” in February 2017. Skied at Beaver Creek and at Vail. We had fresh snow both days. Sunday
at Vail was blue sky and wonderful! We had some interesting sessions about how the clubs are aging and how
members are requesting more ski in ski out even if the cost is higher . As a member of CMSC, the members
of the Indianapolis Ski Club are eligible to take trips with them. We have eight to ten participants on their
European trip this January 2016.
As the season starts, and your trip departs, enjoy and ski safe!
