London, December 1968, and Judy Garland is about to make her comeback…again. Determined to reclaim her crown as the greatest talent of her generation, she battles with a tornado of drugs and alcohol and a gruelling schedule of concerts at The Talk Of The Town. Despite a series of failed marriages, Judy has her latest and youngest husband-to-be by her side, a man as determined as she that, at any cost, these concerts will mark the revival of her battered career. Tracie Bennett’s remarkable portrayal of this tough, talented, compelling woman has been rewarded with standing ovations. This extraordinary production – thrilling, hilarious, moving and tragic – is directed by Tony and Olivier award-winner Terry Johnson, features a six-piece onstage band and includes Garland’s most memorable songs – The Man That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and – of course – Over The Rainbow. No other dance company places such emphasis on the importance of music and the deep magic it can conjure together with movement. RADC’s programme features two brand new Alston pieces, to strikingly different music. A CEREMONY OF CAROLS is choreographed to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for boys’ voices and harp. The music is of magisterial simplicity, conjuring up a rich world of rapt and devout adoration; the dance is a celebration of a sheer surge of breath, a pure stream of sound. The second new Alston piece is performed to Mozart’s achingly beautiful Piano Sonata No.15. “Alston is the most musically revealing choreographer in the world today” New York Times. The programme also includes a revival of Alston’s iconic ROUGHCUT, probably his best-loved signature piece, and a defining classic of British dance. It is performed to the shimmering peals of Steve Reich’s New York & Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar. “A choreographer for whom every dance is a love affair with his chosen music” The Times “Choreography that sends you home cloud-high” Sunday Times Eves 7.30pm Eves: a) £18.50 b) £17 c) £15.50 d) £12.50 SEE PAGE 32 FOR DATES TICKETS GO ON SALE Refer to back page for seat positions relating to price bands e) £5.50 Under 25s Special Price: Bands A & B £6 all perfs Group Rates: All perfs see page 57 for further information MEET RICHARD ALSTON Richard Alston will give a FREE pre-performance talk at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 February. THE TWO NOBLE KINSMEN by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher Based on Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, the story of cousins Arcite and Palamon is one of thwarted love, rivalry and knightly honour. Captured in war by Duke Theseus, they both fall in love with a high-born lady, and their previous comradeship turns to enmity. But their Jailer’s daughter falls in love with one of them, and the world is turned upside down. Described variously as either a tragedy which ends happily or a comedy where someone dies at the end, this is a rare opportunity to see one of Shakespeare’s final plays that mixes heroic drama, tragedy and farce. Tickets: £8 (Concs £6.50) Thurs 8 - Sat 10 Dec, Eves 7.30pm Youth Theatre Company MRS BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE By Christopher Durang In this departure from Dickens, Scrooge’s “Bah humbug!” is an undiagnosed seasonal Tourette’s Syndrome, and the Ghost of Christmas is a lady with real attitude. Trying to transform Scrooge, her magic keeps malfunctioning, and centre-stage is taken by Mrs Bob Cratchit. She’s sick of Tiny Tim, (not to mention her other twenty children), and attempts to get drunk and escape her life. As the Ghost loses control, the plot morphs into parodies of It’s A Wonderful Life and Oliver Twist. A fiendishly funny comedy that turns Dickens’ tale of redemption firmly on its head. How do shows get to Norwich? Are we offered them, or do we bid in the marketplace? How important are good relationships with key producers? What’s the deal? Naturally every show takes a slightly different route to our market. But the ones we take most pride in are the ones we’ve had a special role in. Take Ed Hall’s all-male Propeller company, for instance. Many of our customers came to see one or other – or both – of their Comedy of Errors and Richard III when the company was here in March. The Norwich reviews and audience reaction were terrific, and the financial return to the Theatre Royal was very satisfactory. On the back of this success the Arts Council has offered Propeller one of the very few new National Portfolio contracts which guarantees that they will be coming back to Norwich for at least the next four years. Behind Propeller there’s a story which links us with our colleagues who run the major theatres in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Coventry, Canterbury, Plymouth, Manchester, Nottingham and Cheltenham, with whom we form the Touring Partnership. This inspirational trajectory would not have been possible without Norwich’s championing of Propeller, which persuaded the Touring Partnership to back them, which in turn encouraged the Arts Council to support their emerging stability. We jointly took the decision about eighteen months ago that we wanted to support Propeller, which was at that time a peripatetic and occasional producing company operating out of the tiny – but influential – Watermill Theatre in Newbury. We wanted to see Propeller grow into a major regular touring company. Everyone wins: Norwich and the Touring Partnership get high-quality classic productions that young people in particular respond to; the international touring circuit gets additional first-class drama product to balance the glut of musicals; the Arts Council gets its name broadcast throughout the world as a major arts patron; Coutts Bank associates itself with energetic and provocative arts provision. So the Touring Partnership formed a partnership with the company. We guaranteed ten annual UK touring weeks and associated costs, and on their side Propeller guaranteed two all-male Shakespeare productions a year, to run in repertoire. The deal was for two years, subject to a successful first year. What a success it has been! 54 With the solid platform of backing from the Touring Partnership Propeller was able to secure Arts Council support as well as sponsorship from Coutts Bank. They have toured the world – in every instance crediting the Touring Partnership as co-producers – and have recently performed the plays in repertoire at Hampstead Theatre in London, where every national reviewer has praised the company’s style, brio and intellectual rigour, as well as their tremendous theatricality. Watch this space for details of Propeller’s next visit. And in the meantime, as always, if you have any observations or comments on any aspect of the Theatre Royal, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
