Following huge success, the Agatha Christie Theatre Company,
now in its sixth outstanding year, is proud to present Verdict,
the most riveting and compelling drama by the undisputed
‘Queen of Crime.’
The brilliant Professor Hendryk leads a content and morally
upstanding life, but his world is turned upside-down when the
prospect of life-saving treatment for his invalid wife persuades
him to take on a new pupil against his better judgement; the
spoilt, conniving minx Helen who will stop at nothing to get her
way. With murderous intentions afoot, it only remains to be seen
what verdict will be delivered, and if justice will prevail...

Olivier award-winning Tracie Bennett took the
West End by storm as Judy Garland, with a
host of 5 star reviews, in Peter Quilter’s
End of the Rainbow.
London, December 1968, and Judy Garland is
about to make her comeback…again.
Determined to reclaim her crown as the
greatest talent of her generation, she battles
with a tornado of drugs and alcohol and a
gruelling schedule of concerts at The Talk Of
The Town.
Despite a series of failed marriages, Judy has
her latest and youngest husband-to-be by
her side, a man as determined as she that, at
any cost, these concerts will mark the revival
of her battered career.
Tracie Bennett’s remarkable portrayal of this
tough, talented, compelling woman has been
rewarded with standing ovations.
This extraordinary production – thrilling,
hilarious, moving and tragic – is directed by
Tony and Olivier award-winner Terry Johnson,
features a six-piece onstage band and includes
Garland’s most memorable songs – The Man
That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine,
The Trolley Song and – of course – Over The
Rainbow.

Norwegian violinist Henning
Kraggerud is renowned for
gripping audiences with his
effortless virtuosity, sunny
musicality and beauty of
expression. In this concert he
performs one of Mozart’s most
delightful Violin Concertos.
Kraggerud then directs Britten
Sinfonia in Mahler’s
orchestration of Schubert’s
fiercely intense Death and the
Maiden. Mahler had a great
enthusiasm for arranging
legendary compositions for
chamber orchestra in order to
bring them to a wider public. In
this stunning arrangement
Mahler creates a passionate and
resonant work which retains the
vigour and tragedy of the
original action packed piece.
The concert is completed by a
new work from young composer
Piers Tattersall commissioned
with support from The William

From Stephen Daldry, the Oscar nominated Director of The Reader,
The Hours and one of Britain’s best-loved films, Billy Elliot, comes the
multi award-winning production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller.
Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation, winning more awards
than any other production in history, this landmark production from
the National Theatre has thrilled audiences in the West End, on
Broadway and throughout the world with its epic and wildly
imaginative staging, raw emotion, evocative score, lashing rain and
chilling suspense.
When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling
family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his
investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling
revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us
all to examine our consciences.

Moscow City Ballet
Romeo & Juliet
Wednesday 1 - Saturday 4 February
Moscow City Ballet was formed in 1988 by the distinguished Russian
choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov. A highly acclaimed
ex-soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, he is dedicated to bringing his heritage
of classical ballet in the Moscow style to audiences all over the world.
The company has some of the most accomplished and artistic soloists,
and a sublime corps de ballet, all trained in the best traditions of the
Russian school. The costumes and sets are beautiful, colourful, and a
feast for the eye when the curtain goes up.
Prokofiev’s score is generally regarded as one of the greatest ever
written for a full length ballet, providing the tragic young lovers with
some of his most powerful and lyrical music, performed live by the
Moscow Ballet Orchestra.
Moscow City Ballet’s distinctive style endures both in production
and rehearsal, due to the dedication of Victor Smirnov-Golovanov
and his wife, Ludmila Nerubashenko, Chief Ballet Mistress and
principal teacher.
Moscow City Ballet has become one of Russia's most successful
ballet companies, touring extensively across the globe.

Richard Alston Dance Company
Tuesday 14 - Wednesday 15 February
Music and dance come together in exquisite harmony in the
choreography of Richard Alston. No other dance company places
such emphasis on the importance of music and the deep magic it
can conjure together with movement.
RADC’s programme features two brand new Alston pieces, to strikingly
different music. A CEREMONY OF CAROLS is choreographed to
Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for boys’ voices and harp. The music is
of magisterial simplicity, conjuring up a rich world of rapt and devout
adoration; the dance is a celebration of a sheer surge of breath, a pure
stream of sound. The second new Alston piece is performed to Mozart’s
achingly beautiful Piano Sonata No.15.
“Alston is the most musically revealing choreographer in
the world today”
New York Times.
The programme also includes a revival of Alston’s iconic ROUGHCUT,
probably his best-loved signature piece, and a defining classic of British
dance. It is performed to the shimmering peals of Steve Reich’s New
York & Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar.

chosen music” The Times

OMIGOD YOU GUYS! TOTALLY FABULOUS SHOW!
For the first time ever, the West End & Broadway sensation, 2011
Olivier Award winner (Best New Musical), Legally Blonde The
Musical comes to Norwich Theatre Royal. Based on the hit movie
starring Reese Witherspoon, this critically acclaimed new musical is
created by a top-of-their-class creative team.
College sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods doesn’t
take no for an answer. So when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her
for someone serious, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books,
and heads for Harvard Law School. Legally Blonde The Musical
will take you from the social whirl of California Campus life to
Harvard’s Halls of Justice with the brightest new heroine (and of
course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser).
This all singing, all dancing, feel-good musical comedy will be the
highlight of your year and the most fashionable ticket in town.
The verdict? This much fun shouldn’t be legal!

One of the most popular dance productions
ever staged in the UK, Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker!
returns to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
This delicious theatrical feast has family-sized helpings of
Matthew Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy.
Nutcracker! follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously
bleak Christmas Eve at Dr. Dross’ Orphanage, through an
ice-skating winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom
of Sweetieland.
Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and Anthony Ward’s unforgettable
sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create
a fresh and charmingly irreverent interpretation.
Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures has produced some
of the most successful dance productions of the last two decades
including Swan Lake, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and
last year’s sell-out hit, Cinderella.

REGINALD D HUNTER
In just over a decade since he began
performing, Reginald D Hunter has
become one of the UK comedy
industry’s best-known and most
distinctive performers. His work is
often brutally honest, frequently
controversial but always meticulously
measured and thought out.
He is one of the few performers to
have been nominated for the highly
coveted main Perrier Award in three
consecutive years and has become a

THE TWO NOBLE KINSMEN
by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher
Based on Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, the story of cousins Arcite
and Palamon is one of thwarted love, rivalry and knightly honour.
Captured in war by Duke Theseus, they both fall in love with a
high-born lady, and their previous comradeship turns to enmity. But
their Jailer’s daughter falls in love with one of them, and the world is
turned upside down. Described variously as either a tragedy which
ends happily or a comedy where someone dies at the end, this is a
rare opportunity to see one of Shakespeare’s final plays that mixes
heroic drama, tragedy and farce.

MRS BOB CRATCHIT’S WILD CHRISTMAS BINGE
By Christopher Durang
In this departure from Dickens, Scrooge’s “Bah humbug!” is an
undiagnosed seasonal Tourette’s Syndrome, and the Ghost of
Christmas is a lady with real attitude. Trying to transform Scrooge,
her magic keeps malfunctioning, and centre-stage is taken by Mrs
Bob Cratchit. She’s sick of Tiny Tim, (not to mention her other
twenty children), and attempts to get drunk and escape her life. As
the Ghost loses control, the plot morphs into parodies of It’s A
Wonderful Life and Oliver Twist. A fiendishly funny comedy that turns
Dickens’ tale of redemption firmly on its head.

The most frequently asked questions about the
Theatre Royal are about our programming. How
do shows get to Norwich? Are we offered them,
or do we bid in the marketplace? How important
are good relationships with key producers?
What’s the deal?
Naturally every show takes a slightly different
route to our market. But the ones we take most
pride in are the ones we’ve had a special role in.
Take Ed Hall’s all-male Propeller company, for
instance.
Many of our customers came to see one or other
– or both – of their Comedy of Errors and Richard
III when the company was here in March. The
Norwich reviews and audience reaction were
terrific, and the financial return to the Theatre
Royal was very satisfactory.
On the back of this success the Arts Council has
offered Propeller one of the very few new
National Portfolio contracts which guarantees that
they will be coming back to Norwich for at least
the next four years.
Behind Propeller there’s a story which links us
with our colleagues who run the major theatres in
Newcastle, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Coventry,
Canterbury, Plymouth, Manchester, Nottingham
and Cheltenham, with whom we form the Touring
Partnership.
This inspirational trajectory would not have been
possible without Norwich’s championing of
Propeller, which persuaded the Touring
Partnership to back them, which in turn
encouraged the Arts Council to support their
emerging stability.
We jointly took the decision about eighteen
months ago that we wanted to support
Propeller, which was at that time a peripatetic
and occasional producing company operating out
of the tiny – but influential – Watermill Theatre in
Newbury. We wanted to see Propeller grow into a
major regular touring company.
Everyone wins: Norwich and the Touring
Partnership get high-quality classic productions
that young people in particular respond to; the
international touring circuit gets additional
first-class drama product to balance the glut of
musicals; the Arts Council gets its name
broadcast throughout the world as a major arts
patron; Coutts Bank associates itself with
energetic and provocative arts provision.
So the Touring Partnership formed a partnership
with the company. We guaranteed ten annual UK
touring weeks and associated costs, and on their
side Propeller guaranteed two all-male
Shakespeare productions a year, to run in
repertoire. The deal was for two years, subject to
a successful first year.
What a success it has been!
54
With the solid platform of
backing from the Touring
Partnership Propeller was
able to secure Arts
Council support as well as
sponsorship from Coutts Bank. They have toured
the world – in every instance crediting the Touring
Partnership as co-producers – and have recently
performed the plays in repertoire at Hampstead
Theatre in London, where every national reviewer
has praised the company’s style, brio and
intellectual rigour, as well as their tremendous
theatricality.
Watch this space for details of Propeller’s next
visit. And in the meantime, as always, if you have
any observations or comments on any aspect of
the Theatre Royal, please don’t hesitate to
contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Education
Education
“This was education at its absolute best”
As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre
Royal regards education as central to its
function, as shown by our charitable
objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and
advance education, particularly by the
production of educational plays and the
encouragement of the arts, including the
arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and
music and to formulate, prepare and
establish schemes therefore.”
These pages give an indication of the range
and scale of that education work.

Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Richard

appropriately challenging and hard work, but well worth it! In my 14 years
of teaching I have never been so proud of the efforts of all involved.” Teacher
THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT
Now in its twelfth year, this biannual music
project aims to break down the barriers
associated with the arts and theatre in
general and opera and dance in particular.
Free teachers workshops are offered to
both teachers with specialist music skills
and to non-specialists, giving an
introduction to composing music in school.
Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2
of the National Curriculum in terms of
listening, composing and appraising,
workshops are followed by a programme of
activity involving residential work in schools
with professional musicians which leads
to a performance on stage at the
Theatre Royal.
