What’s really at stake? And how will this one decision impact our nation and your family? 08 STATE OF OUR NATION Now is the time to fight for America’s future. Find out what you can do to ensure freedom and faith into the next generation. 10 MAKING THE CONNECTION Discover the life-changing impact of a covenant with God and a connection with God’s people. 12 DO FOUNDATIONS MATTER? In 1774, a group of visionaries first met to declare freedom for a new nation of people. But who were America’s founding fathers? And what were their true intentions? 14 D.N.A. OF A LEADER You were born with a divine purpose and plan. Learn how God is moving you toward your destiny. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH www.jentezenfranklin.org who will lead us? Leadership has never been more important than it is in this day and time. As we head toward the presidential election, it is time to pray and cry out to God. We are at the point of a major transition in this nation. Not only will the new president affect today’s economy and foreign policy, but the decisions made by our next leader will impact generations. One of the critical roles of the incoming president will be to make appointments to the Supreme Court. We have the potential of reversing Roe vs. Wade and the cruelty of abortion if our next president will appoint justices who will fight for life. After all of these years of trying to make that change, believing and praying that the slaughter of the innocent would stop, it is within our grasp! The next leader of our nation will also impact our families. We must elect someone who will stand up against the homosexual agenda and acceptance of gay marriage. Some potential leaders have already made it clear that they approve of legislation to redefine marriage to include same-sex union. America’s 2008 decision will impact generations 4 CO NNECTION W IT H JEN TEZEN F R AN K L I N — Jentezen Franklin WHO WILL L E AD US ? 5 Today, a new generation is emerging and shaping what the future will look like. This election is critical. I’m not talking about voting for a party, but for a candidate whose convictions line up most with the Word of God. A candidate who will fight for the core issues of life and family. We don’t want someone who just follows the wind of popular culture, but someone who will hold to the great foundations of this nation. What does the Bible say about the choices they make and the values they hold to? We need to cry out for God to give us a righteous leader! I know He is able to do that if we pray and believe together. You have a responsibility to vote for the candidate who most reflects Godly character. In the book of 1 Kings, the people of Israel also faced a leadership problem. David was on his deathbed; generation had passed away and there were no Godly leaders guiding the people. “Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, ‘I will be king’” (1 Kings 1:5, NKJV). But according to Scripture, the kingdom had already been promised to Solomon. Adonijah, who was David’s fourth son, attempted to bypass the Lord’s will and David’s choice by sacrificing and celebrating. He even got a priest and a general on his side. But Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, went in to tell King David about it. “Then she said to him, ‘My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, 6 CO NNECTION W IT H JEN TEZEN F R AN K L I N acts” (Psalm 145:4, NKJV). Every generation has a race to run. Then, they’ll hand the baton of praise, worship and purpose on to the next generation. When one generation is coming to an end, a new generation goes through a time of struggle to take its place. That is the struggle God’s people faced in the early chapters of 1 Kings. and he shall sit on my throne’” (1 Kings 1:17, NKJV). So David stopped Adonijah’s plans by naming Solomon king. Consider Psalm 75:6-7, “For exaltation comes neither from the east Nor the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another” (NKJV). There are lessons of leadership found in these passages that can apply to us today. I’m not just talking about the presidential race; I’m talking about the influence of your personal life in the lives of those around you. Godly leadership is critical in every area of our lives . . . and for our future. Promotion comes from the Lord Here’s the key to finding and knowing God’s promotion: Promotion comes when you’re doing what you’re supposed to do! Remember that Elisha was plowing in a field when his promotion came . . . David was watching sheep when his promotion came . . . Moses was watching his father-in-laws flock when his promotion came “. . . Samuel was serving in Eli’s house when his promotion came.” We’re not supposed to be “promotion seekers.” We’re supposed to be “God seekers”. Out of our relationship with God comes promotion. If you humble yourself before the mighty hand of God, He will promote you in due season. There is no need to brag on yourself. God resists the proud! The enemy may try to intimidate you and push a substitute into seizing the throne of your destiny. You may almost lose heart. But hold onto the promise God has given you. God makes the choice, not men. A new generation is ready to go There’s always a “new generation” that’s coming up . . . that God is raising up . . . that is emerging to take the place of pre-eminence. Every generation has a different look and sound. Every generation has a belief system. Most importantly, every generation has a “divine destiny.” Today, a new generation is emerging and shaping what the future will look like. I believe right now the next generation of God’s people are already in place. Samuel was already in the temple. David was already in Saul’s house. David said, “One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty Nebuchadnezzar put it this way, “…That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17, NKJV). The enemies of God’s plan David understood that if Solomon’s throne was going to be established, Solomon’s enemies had to be destroyed. Today, are we making it harder for the next generation by not dealing with our spiritual enemies? What about generational curses of addiction, adultery, immorality and financial ignorance? We are commanded to pass on a spiritual inheritance to our children. We don’t want to pass on the curses, but the blessings! To do that, we must take on the enemy who is trying to destroy that inheritance and defeat him. Our forefathers passed on the blessings of freedom, faith and liberty as an inheritance for America . . . and so must we. No matter how the election goes this fall, we know that God’s Word will not return void. I want to challenge you today to stand with me on that Word through prayer and fasting for our nation. Pray that God will move upon the leadership of this nation, preserve our families and our freedom, and equip the next generation to run their race with victory. WHO WILL L E AD US ? 7 HHHHHHHHHHHHH One of the frontlines of this spiritual battle is the classroom. Evil forces have infiltrated our schools and sought to overpower our parental rights and Godly influences. State of our nation What about the next generation of leaders? America’s next generation is being attacked spiritually like never before. Pop culture surrounds them with immorality, violence and godlessness through music, movies, clothes . . . even classroom curriculum. Christian researcher George Barna states that the recent massacre at Virginia Tech should alert parents to take a hard look at how a culture that glamorizes sex and violence is impacting young adults. In an update about the Virginia Tech massacre, Barna noted that only about two percent of today’s teens possess a Biblical worldview that acknowledges the existence of God, Satan and sin, the availability of forgiveness and grace through Jesus Christ, and the existence of absolute moral principles provided in the Bible. I am convinced that the fight for our children must be won by the age of 13. How parents influence their children prior to the teen years is absolutely critical to the kingdom of God on earth. Tragically, many parents are not prepared for the fight for their children’s future. Parenting is both a privilege and a responsibility ordained by God. It is a day-by-day, minute-by-minute effort. Too often, parents who are overwhelmed by work or worries leave it to others to shape their child’s life. One of the frontlines of this spiritual battle is the classroom. Evil forces have infiltrated our schools and sought to overpower our parental rights and Godly influences. Just a few years ago, David Parker was arrested and sued by a school district in Massachusetts 8 CO NNECTION W IT H JEN TEZEN F R AN K L I N for defending his rights as a parent to protect his kindergartener from being taught about homosexual relationships in public school. Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said, “The philosophy of the classroom in one generation is the philosophy of government in the next.” Barna writes in his book, Revolutionary Parenting: “The facts have been indisputably clear: in assessing the impact of churches, schools, and parents, it is the latter that have the most dramatic personal influence on a child.” What can you do to combat evil influences in your child’s life? Before Ezra led the freed remnant of Israel back to Jerusalem, he called for a holy fast, seeking God to show “the right way for us and our little ones” (Ezra 8:21, NKJV). After much prayer and fasting, they stepped out, boldly trusting God for their safe passage. We too must humbly seek God and boldly take action for our “little ones” and for our future. We must . . . Please begin today to pray, fast and seek God for the leaders of this nation. Seek Him about how to prepare our future leaders through training and by Godly example. As you partner with this ministry, you can help impact tomorrow’s generation by helping to spread the Word into every household of this nation and beyond through the Kingdom Connection broadcasts and publications. You cannot separate the two. I believe it is God who gave these mighty men of faith the victory. We must never take that history-changing victory for granted. Inscribed on the tombstone of one such Founding Father, Pilgrim leader William Bradford, Governor of Plymouth Colony, are the words: “What our fathers with so much difficulty attained, do not basely relinquish.” As we face an uncertain future in America with troubling economic news and acts of war, we must turn back to our spiritual heritage. Let’s follow the lead of our Founding Fathers and pray for America! “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, NKJV). When we do, I believe God will give us victory just as He did for these men of vision. God’s Word asks, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” –Psalm 11:3 nkjv A s a Christian, you have a foundation and a heritage built on faith . . . on freedom through the power of the blood . . . and on God’s unchanging Word. As an American, you also have a heritage — a rich foundation that is also built on faith and freedom. The men who gathered to sign the Declaration of Independence were profoundly changed by the truth of God’s Word. Do you know that 24 of the 56 signers held seminary degrees? Some were even active pastors! These men were not seeking freedom from religion, but rather freedom for religion. It is well-recorded that when the Continental Congress met for the first Whether the popular culture of time in Philadelphia on September 5, 1774, our society wants to admit it or the very first thing they did was to pass a resolution that the Reverend Duché be not . . . Samuel Adams said he could hear “a prayer from any gentleman of piety and virtue who was at the same time a friend to his country.” At one point, Reverend Duché broke out into spontaneous prayer and the others joined him. They prayed fervently for America and asked God for divine intervention. What a prayer meeting that must have been! Yes, our Founding Fathers were men of faith. They were men with families. They were men of action! These leaders were willing to pay the price for freedom to worship God and to establish a nation of true freedom and liberty — “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” They put their livelihoods, their families and even their own lives on the 12 CO NNECTION W IT H JEN TEZEN F R AN K L I N The First Prayer In Congress print You can receive a copy of this scene printed in limited quantity on high quality archival parchment, in appreciation for your ministry gift today. The print above was created from an original engraving owned by Pastor Stephen Hill in Dallas, Texas. This print is one of the few that were actually made from an original engraving. It is a vivid reminder of how the leadership of this nation began. “Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me . . . stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” —Opening lines of Psalm 35, read in Congress, September 7, 1774 DO FOUNDATI ONS MATTE R? 13 was that God had already been at work instilling in him the gifts and talents he would need to lead God’s people out of bondage. Let’s take a closer look at the D.N.A of a leader through Moses’ example. D : divine discontentment Just before God began positioning Moses on a higher level for the incredible purpose of his life, Moses experienced a divine discontentment. Moses should have been content . . . he was living in a palace. He had servants, riches and every luxury you could imagine. Yet, something in him began to feel dissatisfaction. He was discontented. And when Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, his divine discontentment was ignited! He said to himself, “Somebody ought to do something about that.” When you start saying that to yourself . . . look out! God caused Moses to notice and focus on the problem. None of his other buddies paid attention, but Moses was drawn to the problem. He said, “I’ve got to do something.” The Bible says Moses looked this way and that way before he killed the Egyptian. But he should have looked up for the answer to his dilemma. He made a mistake, but at least he tried something. God is looking for someone who will try something. The miracle started when Moses tried. And God used Moses’ big failure to make Moses more dependent on Him. d.n.a. of a leader W h at i s G o d p r e p a r i n g YOU f o r ? God has a perfect purpose and a divine plan for your life. Before you were ever born, God established your destiny. He created you for an assignment that only you can fulfill. But before God can use you for His glory, there is a process you must go through. Through situations and circumstances, God fashions and forms you for His purpose. Every step of the way you are being equipped and empowered for your destiny. God is instilling in you the D.N.A. for leadership. Maybe you’re experiencing the pressure of the Master’s hand at work in your life today. If so, that is when God is about to use you for His glory! He’s developing the D.N.A. of a leader in you. We see this process at work in the life of Moses. When God called to Moses from the burning bush in Exodus chapter 3, Moses asked God, “…Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11, NKJV) God replied, “I will certainly be with you” (Exodus 3:12, NKJV). But what Moses didn’t know 14 CO NNECTION W IT H JEN TEZEN F R AN K L I N Is there an injustice, a challenge that you cannot get off your mind? Maybe there is an issue that stirs your soul and boils your blood. Get ready. God is instilling in you divine discontentment. N : national leadership When God is developing you into a leader, He will expose you to national leadership. God plucked Moses out of a little Hebrew village and placed him in the presence of Pharaoh. It was in the palace of Egypt that Moses learned to dream and think big. God needs people who will stretch their small-time mentality and dream like a leader. God is up to something in your life and not even the sky is a limit to it! Here’s some advice. If you want to catch hold of a big vision, get in the presence of a visionary. Learn from people of influence and wisdom. Begin dreaming big and believing in yourself. The great King David began his journey to leadership as a small shepherd boy. Before God released him for His divine purpose, God placed him in the palace with the national leader, King Saul. When God wants to stretch you, He may put you in a place that tests your abilities, skills and plans. Just go with it. God is about to break you out into big thoughts. He wants you to think on a level that’s grander than the one you’ve been thinking. Think Big! leadership takes many roles. are you ready? goodbye status quo E m b r a c i n g G o d ’ s C a l l t o Le a d e r s h i p Jentezen Franklin’s new teaching series will equip and empower you to be the leader God created you to be in your family . . . your ministry . . . your community . . . and your nation. 3 cd Series Includes: The DNA of a Leader • Success Secrets of Shamgar • Seasons of Transition D.N.A. Work the Plan: Biblical Principles to Help You Attack Your Lack and Experience Financial Victory Attack Your Lack: There IS a path to financial victory Any time God wants to do something in your life, He will not only put you in the presence of leaders, but He will also give you a period of alienation from distracting influences. Moses was a Hebrew, but God drew him out of the comfort and familiarity of His people. God placed him in a palace . . . a place where he just didn’t fit in. God sent him into the desert in exile. If God is going to develop you into a great leader, He will put you through the alienation of leadership. He’ll take you out of your environment. He’ll put you in a place of discomfort. Maybe you feel different? Do you feel pulled apart from everyone else? If so, you may be in that season of life right now. That’s a good thing. When God sends you into alienation, His voice is the only one you hear…He is the only one you can really talk to. That’s when you reach your breakthrough. That’s when you are fashioned with the D.N.A. of a leader! One of the purposes of alienation is to get you to the place of development where you don’t need the applause of men. If you think you need outside approval, you’ll be up and down like a roller coaster. If you’re going to be who God has called you to be, you cannot gauge your self-esteem by the appraisal of men. You’ve got to know who you are and what God has called you to do. Forget about what people think. Cry out to Him today to transform and equip you for His purposes with the D.N.A. of a leader. When Moses got his D.N.A., he was developed into the leader God called him to be. Moses fulfilled God’s purpose for his life and led God’s people out of 400 years of slavery. “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20, NKJV). Maybe you are experiencing pain in your life today. You can go through a storm, but don’t let the storm go through you. You can have peace. You can know that your future is secure. Whatever you are going through today, God has a plan to turn it around for your good. On more than one occasion, the Bibles says Moses, “cried out to the Lord.” There’s something about weeping and getting broken before God. God can turn your tragedy into triumph. Cry out to God . . . let Him do what you cannot. Place your cares and burdens in His hands. Remember, through every situation God is instilling the D.N.A. of leadership and purpose in your life.
