Founded by French explorer Champlain in 1608, Québec is the only city in North America to have preserved ramparts grouping together many
bastions, gates and defensive works guarding Vieux-Québec. Uppertown, located at the top of the cliff, is a religious and administrative centre and
Lowertown, with its old neighbourhoods, form an urban ensemble providing one of the finest examples of a fortified colonial town. The Chemin
du Roy leads to place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, in front of the Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec, where was located the great outdoor market
during the New France era..
