In the next round Rockhampton Grammar school played us in Mackay in the Central
Queensland final. We made a phenomenal 4 for 302 from our 50 overs. All six batsmen
contributed at roughly a run a ball with Laren Dyer 36, Jack Sambell 30, Duane Russell 51,
Jeff Lituri 68, Joel Bruun 67no and Tyler Jones 35no; all batted beautifully. Grammar was
bowled out for 151.
As Central Queensland winners, the boys travelled to Townsville to play the North
Queensland regional winner, William Ross SHS. North High elected to bat first and made
229 from our 50 overs. This was a great effort as we were in trouble at one point being 6
for 136 before Mitchell English, Josh Del Simone, Lachlan Austin, Zac Wilson and Tim
Jones applied themselves with the bat.
We then bowled brilliantly on a slow low wicket to restrict William Ross High to just 143
runs from their 50 overs. Jeff Lituri and Lachlan Austin bowled 20 overs of leg and offspin
conceding just 1 for 53. They were ably supported by Tim Jones (3 for 9 from 6 overs).
Bring on Brisbane! — the boys travel Saturday 21st November to play against The
Southport School, John Paul College and St Columbia College in the final series.
Good Luck, Boys!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I am delighted to announce that I have been recently appointed as Principal of Mackay
North SHS, after having filled the position in an acting role this year. I consider this
appointment an honour and a privilege. North is an excellent school in so many ways,
with dedicated and committed staff members and an enthusiastic group of parent and
community members working together to provide a wide variety of opportunities for our
students. I am looking forward to working with the school community once again next
year, and in the years to come.
This week we say farewell to our Year 12 students. The Seniors of 2009 have been an
excellent group of students who have been very good role models for the rest of the
student body. The Graduation ceremony will be held on Thursday night and the Senior Prom on Saturday
night. We wish the Seniors of 2009 all the best for whatever career they choose in the future. Thank you for the
very positive contribution you have made to our school.

STATE ATHLETICS
Seven athletes from MNSHS represented the Capricornia region at this year’s State Secondary Track and Field
championships in Brisbane from 21 – 25 October.
Students who made finals were:
Chelsea Dartnell - 7th in the 16 years 400m in 59.73.
She was also reserve for the 800m final.
Jaymee King leapt 4.61m to finish in 7th place in the
17 years Long Jump.
Ellie Wilson finished strongly to record an 8th in the
14 years 90m Hurdles in a time of 15.08.
Our other students who competed were Emma
Newton in the 15yrs Long and Triple Jump, Renee
Potgeiter in the 14yrs Javelin, and Aaron Hughes
who competed in the 14yrs 800m and 1500m.
MNSHS students Jacob Taylor and Billy-Joe
Halberstater were part of the Athletes with
Disabilities team. They both competed successfully.
Jacob placed in all of his events with a first in both
the 16 years 100m and 200m sprints and a second
in the 16 - 19 years Long Jump. Billy-Joe competed
in the 13 - 15 years Long Jump and was placed

FOOD PORTIONS
Did you know that food portions have significantly increased
in 20 years? An average serve of chicken stir fry was 2 cups
(1827kJ), now it is 4.5 cups (3633kJ). To use the extra
1806kJ of energy consumed an average person would have
to do 1hour of aerobics. An average serving of hot chips 20
years ago contained 882kJ, today a serve contains 2562kJ.
It would take 1hour 10 minutes walking to burn the additional 1680kJ
consumed. In general we are eating larger portions of food which
means we have to be more active to use this extra energy. For

CARING NORTH STUDENTS BITE BACK AT HUNGER
Once again this year, students at North proved that when there is a good cause, teenagers will rise to the challenge and
exceed any expectation that teachers or parents might set for them. The ninety-nine students from Years 8 to 12 who
participated in World Vision’s Forty Hour Famine in 2009, raised a total of $6660. In itself, this sum is breath-taking. It was
the largest amount raised by any school or group in this region of Queensland. Our star fund-raisers who were awarded with
a World Vision Award for raising over $200 each were: Amba Balchin (Year 8), Maddison Paice (Year 9); Chloe O’Shea
and Brianna Spandley (Year 10); Yazmin Diamond-Zahra and Brianna Rickman (Year 11); and Malea Zunker (Year 12).
In terms of how much North High’s fundraising efforts can help famine-ravaged communities of Africa and South-east Asia,
$6660 can go a long way. According to World Vision, this kind of money could be used to provide emergency food and
clean water for approximately 80 children in drought-affected areas for an entire year. Alternatively, World Vision might
invest these dollars into village-based farming projects that can promote
long-term food security for children and adults in famine areas.
Our ‘Faminers’ at North can be justly proud of their efforts this year.
Whether they raised $200 or $20 or even $5, our student participants
have demonstrated their willingness to give up their time to collect
sponsors, and to sacrifice food or their mobile phone or some other life
essential for forty hours over the August famine weekend.
Some of our keen participants from the Junior School, Madison Rath,
Amba Balchin, Maddison Paice and Hannah Davies, are pictured
admiring our 2009 Top Fundraising Award.

Mood Dolls
Wanted: School uniforms for the
clothing pool for emergency use. Please
leave at the school office.
The Year 10 Textile Design students had a very creative time
making their mood or personality dolls.
They stitched, stuffed and
transformed their dolls
depicting many different
characters.
There were
mermaids, hippies, Scene
girls and Pop stars. An
Irish dancer, a doll going to
a masquerade, a goth, an
Emo, Augustus Gloop from
Charlie and the Chocolate
factory and Vicky Pollard
from Little Britain.
Well done girls.
