Library Live Newsletter
September, October, November 2016
Medina County District Library is proud to present One Book,
One Community in September 2016. We chose the novel Station Eleven
by Emily St. John Mandel because it is a suspenseful, compelling novel
about resilience, hope, art and music. It speaks to our basic human
desire to belong to a community. This book is special because it asks
difficult questions but is still a highly entertaining story.

Summer Reading Game =
Record Breaking Participation
MCDL leads the charge in encouraging kids to read
and has the numbers to back it up. Debbie Socha,
Brunswick Library Children’s Department Supervisor
says, “In the first four weeks of summer we had
almost twice as many children playing the Game
as we did last year!” In 2016 Brunswick City
Schools partnered with MCDL for Summer Reading,
making libraries THE place for reading all summer long. 2015 was
a record-breaking year until 2016 smashed those records.

The Summer Reading theme, Make, Create, Discover, Learn, focuses
on STEM and STEAM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts and
Math). STEM events are always well attended, with waiting lists
to get in and requests for additional events from parents and
educators. “It is important students are exposed to creative
learning in the sciences outside of school and MCDL is happy
to provide that,” says Socha.
Kid City & Friends Little Free Library
Kid City, a Safety Town inspired play
park, opened in May across the
street from Brunswick Library. The
park features kid sized roadways
and local businesses. Thanks to the
Friends of MCDL, there is a library
in Kid City, complete with a Little
Free Library, where families may take
a children’s book of their choice.
The project is a partnership featuring the art students of
Willetts Middle School, the trades classes of the Medina County
Career Center and Brunswick City, Parks and Schools.
StoryWalk® Fall Selection
StoryWalk® is a partnership between MCDL
and Medina County Park District at Carolyn
Ludwig Mugrage Park, 4985 Windfall Road,
Medina. It promotes literacy, physical activity
and spending time together as a family.
Each season brings a new story. Watch for
Little Tree by Loren Long on Sept. 1.

Whether that story is your favorite book or the story

what the library means to you and your community
is important and we hope you share it!
Look for stories from employees as well. You’ll never
believe the paths some of them took to becoming your
favorite smiling face at the service desk or story time.
While engaging the community, MCDL will share
information about an upcoming initiative in 2017.

for nearly 57% of MCDL’s total funding.
Attention Artists

MCDL anticipates nearly $300,000 less in
state funding this year than we received in
2008. Costs continue to climb, but state
funding has not kept pace.
But back to 2016, which has been
all about the library member.
This spring we asked you to offer input on how MCDL
is doing through surveys and focus groups and 1,250
of you responded. Over the summer we shared the
resoundingly positive results!
Currently, MCDL is using your feedback to craft
a strategic plan that will guide us into the future.
This fall and winter we will Discover your Story as
we Learn, Read and Connect with our members.
Stay tuned to the Library Live, social media and

just popped up somewhere unexpected! This fall look for
them at back to school events, college events and festivals.
At Pop-Up Libraries you can apply for a library card,
check out library materials, and learn to download and
borrow digital media at the click of an app. So pop by the
next time you see us at an event, meet our friendly staff,
check out a few books, and find out about all the
services your library provides.

Welcome
New Volunteers!
As of late July 2016, the MCDL
Volunteer Program welcomed
8 new adult volunteers, 3 new
volunteer groups and numerous
new student volunteers. We are
very grateful for the time that
they have chosen to spend in our
libraries supporting our staff and
sharing their talents. If you are
interested in joining their ranks
you may complete the Volunteer
Application and Volunteer
Release forms found at
www.mcdl.info/volunteer
and return to any MCDL location
or contact, Jamie Stilla, Volunteer
Coordinator at 330-769-2852.
