We have our list made out and we are going over the motorcycles this weekend to check the tires, controls, lights, oil, chassis and side stand. (T-CLOCS). Don’t forget the cleaning and polishing. We will get most of the packing completed, too. Our first thing to do when we get to Huntsville Alabama is to go to the International Couple of the Year selection to support our very own Jim and Reba Berry. We will be wearing our safety green shirts so they can look out into the audience and see all that came to support them. We will also be attending some seminars, helping with the bike show, building our paper air planes to glide one of them into the back of an opened trailer, so we can bring it home with us. We also need to get our CRAZY HATS together. Here is some information regarding the Crazy Hats: CRAZY HATS AT WING DING!!! Your National Directors Ray and Sandi Garris have challenged us all to wear our CRAZY HAT’s at Wing Ding this year. They have promised a one-of-a-kind reward for everyone making the effort. Join us at the CRAZY HAT Contest on Friday, Sept. 4 at 12:30 p.m. in the East Hall. We would love to see at least one from each District participating. Here are the rules outlined for this year’s event. • Categories – One category for all • Class – Individual • Winners for first, second and third place • Judging – Applause from the audience Bring your hat and your creativity and let’s have some FUN at the contest! We plan on having lots of fun and visitation with old and new friends. THEN IT’S OVER, Aw, but then we have Chapter T’s Rally, Chapter R’s Rally, Chapter H’s Rally, Oklahoma’s District Rally and Kansas District Rally. More and More fun. After we get home from Wing Ding we will only have 3 ½ months to go until Mid-Winter round Up on January 9th 2016 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. (3003 N. 3rd Street) We have several rooms blocked at the Host Hotel, Holiday Inn, 5247 S. General Bruce Dr. 254-778-5511, Reservation Code: GWR for $89.00. MUST BE BOOK BY NOVEMEBER 15TH, 2015 to get this rate. This host hotel is different from last year. They have 99 rooms with a very large lobby area with a lot of seating for lounging around. It has an onsite restaurant and bar with a Golden Corral restaurant next door. COME AND CHECK IT OUT. We are very pleased to have this hotel as the Host Hotel for your 2016 Rally on May 19-21. We also have the Hampton Inn at 3816 S. General Bruce Dr. as the overflow hotel with the same low rate of 89.00. We have some things were going to change up this year at MWRU and think everyone will like our new ideas. Don’t forget, this is where everyone gets advised on the things that will be going on at the District Rally in May. Your District team is very focused on making sure everyone has a fun time at the events we put together, SO, saddle on up and take a ride to: “HAPPY TRAILS TO TEMPLE”. Mike & Robin Thacker District Directors PAGE 4 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 TEXAS ASSISTANT DD / EDITOR / WEBMASTER Tom & Dawn Sprague Technology: Ain’t it great. I believe I have lived during one of the most interesting times in history. Why you say? I look at the advancements I have seen just in my life time. When I was a child I would read Buck Roger comics and go to the theater to see science fiction movies about space travel. Well we have already been to the moon and we are talking about traveling to Mars. We have sent space probes to the far reaches of the universe. When you were little did you think this possible? I definitely did not. Now on to more recent phenomena. How many of you have a computer in your home. Maybe a better question is to ask how many computers do you have in your home? How many of you grew up with a set of encyclopedias in your home? Where have all the encyclopedias all gone? Gone to the internet everyone. The first PC was launched in 1981. It had a 4 bit processor and 16K of memory with an 11.5 inch monitor. It initially cost $1,565. The computers sold to day have 64 bit processors (and most have 4 processors in the computer) with a minimum of 1,000,000K of memory. Just think in the past 34 years we have exponentially grown in our ability to process information for essentially the same price of a computer in 1981. That is unless you take in to consideration of the purchasing power between the 1980’s and now. The information I got from the internet indicates the CPI has rose 230% between the 80’s and now. So if you multiply the cost of the computer in 1981 by 2.3 you come up with a cost of approx $3,600 and the new computer has more than 1000 times the power of the one in built in the 80’s. Since we are on the subject of what technology has brought us lets talk about something that is much closer to everyone. Cell phones came in to existence around the same time. It is hard to believe these little devices almost everyone has is a little over 30 years old. The first cell phone (DynaTAC by Motorola) sold for $4,000 when it was introduced in 1984. If you do the previous math that means it would have cost a little more than $9,000 today dollars. Do you realize the phone you are carrying today is exponentially more power full that the first PC made back in 1981. Yes, most of you will need to include that phone in the number of computers you count in your house. You may ask, why do I bring all this up? Well this is what makes life exciting. Seeing all the advances in the medical field is exciting. Hopefully I will benefit from some of the advances. I might be still riding my Gold Wing when I am 90 years old. When life gets you down just think of the improvements and dramatic change you have seen in your short time on the earth. When you start thinking back about the advancements we have made in technology and health care you have to be amazed. If you are not amazed you are not fully engaging your brain. On July 25th, Randy and I led our chapter on a “Beat the Heat Breakfast Ride” to the Uptown Café in Thorndale. We invited a couple of friends (non-GW members) that we frequently ride with to join us and our KSU was set for 7:30. Yes, it’s early but we were trying to “beat the heat” and it was a pleasant mid-70s when we left. Our first stop was the Huntington Sculpture Garden in Coupland, TX. It sits on about a one acre plot and it has approximately 50 different statues, monoliths and sculptures made of very large blocks of granite. Many of them include metals such as stainless steel and copper. We decided to hide a wooden medallion in one of the sculptures. After a short hunt, our visitor Jim located the medallion and was treated to a FREE breakfast at the café in Thorndale. If you haven’t seen this sculpture garden, it is definitely something to see. We then rode to Thorndale and were met by a couple of our members who live nearby in Hearne – what a nice surprise. The Café offered a wonderful breakfast buffet that included everything from eggs Benedict to pork chops. The locals have encouraged us to come back for their Sunday brunch buffet and I’m sure we will return. We took some windy roads back home and by the time we got to the house, it wasn’t even 90 degrees – so – Mission Accomplished. We did “Beat the Heat”. On Thursday, August 20th, Kathy and I were on a work trip in Dallas and we scooted out to Waxahachie to the W2 meeting. They were very hospitable and we really enjoyed meeting all of them. Greg and Dan from Chapter R were also visiting and they were there to promote their upcoming rally. They would like to spread the word that “The Chicken is Back”. This sounds like a really fun event so if you are in the neighborhood or are looking for a place to ride – you should join them on October 3rd. Looking ahead: We will be at Wing Ding and we are signed up to help with the Bike Show. We just completed our registrations and have made our hotel reservations for the Kansas and Oklahoma District Rallies. We hope to see many of you there and look forward to meeting lots of new folks and making lots of new friends. Have Fun, Be Safe and remember ATGATT! Randy & Kathy Reese Texas District Couple of the Year Chapter W2 Waxahachie TX =================================== Today in History Sept 1, 1939 - At 5.30 a.m., Hitler's armies invaded Poland starting World War II in Europe. PAGE 6 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 RIDER EDUCATOR Lynn & Cindy Harris A GREAT RIDE With so many head to Wing Ding I thought this would be a good time to have you review the weight limit of your behemoth machine. Look in the owner’s manual to see the weight limit. Remember its fuel, rider, passenger and cargo. It is my contention that we rider these beasts severely overloaded, yet they deliver us with very little issue. The issue comes in the form of emergency situations, i.e. swerving or quick stops. This is where that extra weight will most vulnerable. Stopping distances are based on weight and speed so overloading the Wing increases stopping distance, yet I notice many riders still ride like they are solo and no cargo. Think about it as you head out on the Alabama journey. Some other considerations of course are doing a very thorough T-CLOCK. But more important is the body. Wearing ATGATT will reduce sun burn, help keep one hydrated and more alert while riding. If your travel takes you through the hottest part of the day try taking a long sleeve button up shirt (denim works best) and soak in water at a gas stop. It is amazing how cool the body will feel during the ride. By the time the shirt starts to dry it will be close to time for another fuel stop. The bottom line is Ride Smart and Ride SafeBe sure your passenger is as well. Wing Ding is a wonderful event to connect with old friends, make new friends and share stories of traveling on the best riding machine ever made. On a completely different note: Most if not all of you have heard Cindy and I have stepped down as District Educators effective September 30. My day job and responsibilities have increased and I could not do a proper job for the District and its members. This will be our last article but not the last you will hear from us. We are still available to do seminars, riding courses and the coveted Medic FA for the District. So while we are wont be the DE we will still be available to do training. We are passionate about keeping the riding fun, relaxing and SAFE. This passion has driven us to become certified to do courses both for MSF and GW. Both organizations are about sharing good times with Friends, the Fun of our experiences, and Knowledge that comes from having done it. Cindy and I have met so many wonderful people during our tenure and each of you have added value to our lives. So this is not goodbye as we will still be around. It’s been A GREAT RIDE!! Thank you for all your support and confidence. Remember: the RIDE = the DESTINATION Lynn and Cindy Harris Texas District Educators =================================== Today in History September 4, 1886 - The last major U.S.Indian war came to an end as Geronimo was captured. He died of natural causes in 1909 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. PAGE 7 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 TEXAS DISTRICT TRAINERS CLIFF & GILLIAN ALLEN Hello Texas, Wing Ding is just around the corner- some of you may already be on your way there. Many of our own Chapter R are planning on heading to Huntsville soon. Unfortunately Gillian and I cannot go, as having just started a new job I cannot get the time off. Some of you have found yourselves in similar situations no doubt. In fact, do you find that you cannot make meetings, gatherings etc because of work or health or "something just came up" situations? Those are usually the expensive ones, right? Looking back over the year so far, I realized that several times either Gillian or I had missed a planning meeting, an event or even a chapter gathering. Not ideal but sometimes we just cannot do everything! In fact, recently neither Gillian nor I could attend the monthly planning meeting. The rest of the R Team did and they put their heads together and brainstormed exactly what was needed to organize the R Rally in October. They then presented their ideas to us at the next meeting- we were absolutely bowled over by the detail they had worked out! (Ever felt as though you weren't needed...lol) Seriously though it is often important to let your team/staff do their jobs, let them exchange ideas, brainstorm, identify issues and find solutions. All teams benefit from this attitude and behavior, and part of our role is to “GROW” new leaders and develop a line of succession. We cannot do this unless we encourage our teams to believe that they have the knowledge and the skill to take on those tasks successfully. Congratulations to Chapter C who had an education day where several leadership seminars were taught by Mike Thacker, Steve Van Gilder and Scott Newnam. Steve Fleming sat in and certified Mike and Steve so congrats to them for becoming GWRRA University Leadership Trainers. Also congratulations to Judy Ferguson the Treasurer of Chapter C who successfully completed the on line OCP course. In September Chapter R has arranged a Crash Scene Response Course on 20th and a CPR/ First Aid Course on 27th. Both of these courses will be held in Denton Texas at Cycle Center of Denton from 9.00am to 4.00pm. If anyone wants to attend to keep up or qualify for their Levels Program please contact Chapter R. PAGE 8 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 TEXAS DISTRICT MEC Steve & Donna Van Gilder Recruiting the Generation Y (Millennials) As I was going over the last Area Report List, I began to think again about Recruiting new GWRRA members. Texas has been doing a great job of this for quite some time but could we do even better? I believe that we can if we better understand what it takes to recruit some of the younger generation and in particular the Generation Y folks. Millennials (a.k.a. Generation Y), are defined as people born anywhere from 1980 to 1999, have access to technology, communications, and publishing that simply wasn’t available decades ago. As a result, they have demands for career and lifestyle that are often different than older generations. To help recruit these folks, it might help to better understand what motivates and retains Millennials, not only in the workforce but also in their personal lives. To find out what it takes to draw in this community, I’ve listed some areas below that workforce recruiters are using to recruit Millennials. We may very well be able to adapt some of these areas to attract new members to GWRRA and our local Chapters. Here are some of the tips and our thoughts on how to use them: TIP #1: Engage in social media. “Engage with Millennials on the platform they use the most: social networks. By creating and maintaining Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ profiles, you open the door to new potential members by giving them an opportunity to easily get to know your organization, its ideals, and opportunities for FUN. It also provides them a way to interact and network with your organizations staff and members. If you use social media, you have to be there and be responsive and engaging. TIP #2: Put a real name and face behind the Chapter social media accounts Tip #1 is a requirement for Millennial engagement. And with that requirement comes the need to engage with real people. For example, if you have a Chapter Twitter account for recruiting and posting information, call out explicitly who those followers are interacting with. It makes for a more personal connection, which Millennials appreciate.” TIP #3: Have a “why” This catch-all envelops an entire Organization’s brand, philosophy, and attitude toward current and potential members. Ultimately, a Millennial wants to know why they should join your organization and not one of the other motorcycle groups. Millennials need a challenge, a sense of purpose, and also a dash of vanity, to join and maintain membership in an organization. TIP #4: Make sure your website and social identities are up to date One of the old maxims of job searching is “make sure your resume is up to date.” The same holds true for organizations looking to attract new members at any and all times. If your Chapter plans to have a blog and be on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, then you need to keep them and your website up to date. You don’t need to be everywhere they might expect, but at least show that you’re up to date and connected in their world. Nothing screams “we don’t care about our Chapter” than a blog that hasn’t been updated in a year PAGE 9 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 TEXAS DISTRICT MEC Steve & Donna Van Gilder or a Twitter stream that doesn’t even have a personalized Twitter avatar. If you can’t demonstrate that you care, how can you expect a potential new member to care? TIP #5: Keep selling your Chapter and follow up Chapters must: sell Millennials on why they should join and most importantly, translate how they’ll make an impact on not just the Chapter, but the GWRRA organization. All of this Chapter selling has to be done with rapidfire communications. Millennials have rarely faced delays in communication or the acquisition of information. Adapt to their communication style and respond quickly, or a potential new member may “slip through the cracks.” Millennials’ want the same things as other generations, but prioritize differently While we do talk about Millennials being unique and demanding more, overall they truly want the same things as previous generations. They may just prioritize differently. While this group grew up during a time of almost unprecedented technological achievement, I think what makes this group special is the fact that they have watched their parents and loved ones in their careers as they grew up and internalized some valuable lessons. This generation is not married to work, as with the previous workforce, but would rather spend more time with their family or in pursuits which bring them personal satisfaction. This, is the reason we need to make a concerted effort to connect with this generation in the manner that they feel comfortable. I know that I need to make a better effort in using these types of social media and plan to start doing that, even though I haven’t used them before and never really wanted to make the leap. So if you start to see my name pop up on some of these social media’s, you’ll know that even an old dog can learn a new trick!! If anyone has some ideas on how we can use some of these tips, or have already been successful in using some of these methods, I would love to hear from you so that we can share your thoughts and ideas. Take care and we’ll see you soon!! The schedule is used to verify the award of points in this category. The four basic questions for this are as follows:• Did Chapter participants attend their own District rally? • Did Chapter participants attend their own Region rally? • Did Chapter participants attend the 2015 WING DING? • Did Chapter participants attend a District or Region rally OUTSIDE their own District or Region? Up to 8 points are available for each of these questions, so that is a whopping 32 points on offer! Let’s look at how you would score this section. We covered how to work out your average number of participants in the July newsletter. (See next page for information on Percentage Sheets for Determining Points) 1-2 monthly eventsVVVV..1 point 3 or more events 2 points *NoteVyou get 1 or 2 points per month – you do NOT combine them if you did moreV As you can see, it is all worked out for you! You already did the math when you worked out your Chapter average, so just use the chart! Now, I know many of you will look at this chart and say “My Chapter has way more participants than you have on this list”. That’s great news!!! The chart I have given here is just the first few lines of the actual chart, found in Appendix A of the Chapter of the Year Program Guide under the MEP heading on GWRRA.org. Every month your Chapter prepares an event or ride calendar, and a copy of this is provided to all Chapter participants. It is a good idea to make it available to all surrounding Chapters too – you can email it to the Chapter Directors and the District webmaster. Be sure to add impromptu rides to this calendar, and submit the updated calendar to the Chapter of the Year Coordinator (me!!) with your final submission packet. The packet should include a copy of Well, that’s it for this month! Join me again next month for more information on how to get the recognition YOUR Chapter deserves for all the things it is already doing! Speaking of bike show: All of you who are waiting for the last moment to sign up as a volunteer, well IT’S HERE! The good spots are going fast so you better not delay any longer. What a lot of fun it is that day for all our friends from Region H to gather up and work together. We get an up close and personal look at all these fine bikes, trailers and side cars. And maybe even some free ice cream! Karen Frazier, our Region Educator, has some excellent points to consider for your ride to Wing Ding in her article on page 6 of the September issue of the Region H newsletter. We would also like to stress “BE SAFE”. Stay alert and focused when riding. Last week we were on a weekend out in the 4 wheeler. We saw 2 Goldwings stopped at a service station so we pulled in for a visit, you know, family and all. We had about a 20 minute visit and then our new friends hit the road. After a short “pit stop” we headed down the road. About 15 miles later we came across a gentleman waving for us to slow down. As we topped a hill we saw a rider and co-rider sitting in the road and a Goldwing in the ditch. Our new friends. A vehicle had stopped just over the crest of the hill, in the single west bound lane, opened the passenger door and got out to retrieve a stuffed animal, a gorilla, which was laying in the road. Be aware, there are some crazy people out there on our highways. Avoiding Interstates and taking the back roads on you ride to Wing Ding is a great way to see America, but be careful. They are out there! The good news, there was one broken wrist and some road rash, but the couple was treated and released from a local hospital. When the tow truck drivers arrived, they picked the bike up, started it, put it in reverse and backed it out of the ditch. Gotta love them Goldwings. There are 2 more rallies in our Region this year, Kansas, Sep 17-19 and Oklahoma, Oct 15-17. Don’t miss the fun. We would like to give a shout out to Doris and Jack Schoeck. Jack has had some recent medical issues and is now recovering under the strict guidance from nurse Doris. We know his Team has stepped up to the plate to assist him with the rally just around the corner. Best wished Kansas Team. It is always good to review these tips from time to time to remind us that we are here to serve the membership. Tips for Leaders Leadership is, above all else, a service If you do not fulfill the needs of the people you lead, then it is difficult to be an effective leader regardless of your title. That service may be passing on information, presenting activities to the members, facilitating meetings, etc. These are obvious and visible services. Equally important are the invisible services like instilling teamwork a sense of cooperation, creating a sense of accomplishment, and giving your staff a sense of “ownership; in their duties as team members. In short, a really good leader understands that their most important job is helping the team members be successful. Here are four ideas that may be of assistance to you in your endeavors: 1. Ask Questions: A good leader can often lead without being obvious. Ask the right questions, in the right context for the audience, and have someone else share the stage. 2. Don’t Be The Boss: Include folks in the process and use their talents. People by nature want to be recognized as being good at what they do. When you show a connection between the various talents available and tie those talents together, people will be more willing to work very hard toward the common goal. 3. Polish Those Egos: One of the most flattering things you can do is to ask a person for their help or their opinion. If you need help or ideas, say so, and say why. Be sincere in your request and include an appropriate compliment. One-on-one conversations are often the best. Nothing is more insulting to an ego than an insincere request for assistance or ideas. 4. Share The Glory: NEVER FORGET – your success is only a reflection of the hard work put out by your team. Be sure to mention those who helped and contributed to the goal that has been met. Credit and praise multiply the more you spread them around. September 3-6 Wing Ding 37 will be in Huntsville, Alabama and then all the fall season Region and District Rallies will start happening (Kansas Sept. 18-19 and Oklahoma Oct. 1517). Time to check your Gold Wing for any maintenance items you have been putting off (my home chapter is having a maintenance day this weekend – good time to check your safety gear also), make your reservations for the rallies, and Go Have Some FUN! It is always enjoyable to see friends whom you have not seen for a while – Carolyn and I will be at all of these, and we hope to see you, too. With our busy schedules, sometimes we need to get motivated to take care of all these details, so that is what this month’s article is about. The best motivation is self-motivation. In fact, not many people succeed in life without selfgenerated drive. If you rely on others to energize you, or hesitate until the right mood hits, or delay until circumstances are ideal, then you’ll spend most of your life waiting. Leaders motivate themselves internally rather than depending on external incentives. There’s a world of difference between unmotivated and self-motivated people. Unmotivated people give just the required effort. Motivated people give inspired effort to the things they do. The first group looks to do the minimum; the latter group seeks every opportunity to add value to the team. If self-motivation is such a valuable trait, then the question is: where does self-motivation come from? 1. Clarifying your vision. A vision is an inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will, and emotions to do everything in your power to achieve it. Vision gives you reasons to get up in the morning. A vision leads the leader. It provides the spark that propels a leader forward. Vision activates your sense of purpose, connecting your daily work to your understanding of why you were placed on this earth. The clarity of your vision relates directly to your level of motivation. 2. Taking 100% responsibility for your life. The expectations of others can dissuade us from living out our purpose in life. Operating according to someone else’s dream for us – instead of following our own dream – is a recipe for eventual burnout. Thankfully, to paraphrase Les Brown, someone else’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality. Negative emotions can also serve as tremendous de-motivators. Yet, our emotions do not have to dictate what we do. As Harvard psychologist Jerome Bruner says, “You’re more likely to act yourself into feeling, than to feel yourself into action.” When we take the steps we know to be right, even when they run contrary to our emotions, eventually our feelings come into alignment with our deeds. 3. Charting a course for the future. Lack of direction leads either to paralysis or PAGE 18 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 Region H Couple Of the Year Steve & Carolyn Cotton Continued misspent energy – each of which undercuts motivation. Successful people research the road to the top in order to identify waypoints along the journey. These waypoints allow them to develop a mix of short-term and long-range goals that guide their day-to-day activities. They not only have vision in mind, they also have a practical plan to move toward it. Application: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your level of self-motivation? Which of the three sources of self-motivation above could help YOU improve that rating? September 2, 1752 - The British ended their use of the Julian calendar, switching instead to the Gregorian calendar, resulting in a major adjustment as Wednesday, September 2, was followed by Thursday, September 14. The correction resulted in rioting by people who felt cheated and demanded the missing eleven days back. Ride safe, and Keep Smiling! PAGE 19 TEXAS DISTRICT NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 By the Book By: Jack Wagner - Region H Trainer “Learn the Truth ..Then Pass it Along” Great Expectations or How’s Your Integrity All of GWRRA's officers sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which spells out the responsibilities of holding office. There is one line in the MOU which states “Will abide by all requirements set forth by GWRRA Home Office and published in the Officer’s Handbook.” Taking a look at the Officer Handbook reveals a section titled Expectations of Officers. That section further defines some of the items contained in the MOU. One of those relates to 'leading by example'. It states: “Lead by example! You are expected to hold high the ideals of GWRRA. V. Promote a safe environment and proper rider education by wearing appropriate riding gear (helmet, gloves, long-sleeved shirt or coat, and boots) when riding..” Having recently attended Reno Rendezvous and other GWRRA events, I witnessed lots of Goldwingers riding around in short sleeves, maybe shorts, no gloves and tennis shoes (yes it was hot, but......). Oh, they weren't wearing helmets either. Many of us have known members who 'succumb' to the peer pressure of wearing proper gear – and some of those members have been saved from greater injuries by virtue of the protection provided. While there is no intention for anyone in GWRRA to become the “gear police”, there is an expectation that officers will set the example and encourage others to follow suit. What does this have to do with integrity? Remember, as an officer, you signed an agreement (the MOU). Have the personal integrity to abide by what you committed to – especially when you think no one is watching! That's the truest demonstration of integrity. The more you Know,. The better it gets! Jack Wagner Region H Trainer ================================= Today in History Labor Day: In the United States this is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country. Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored. In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annual labour festival held in Toronto, Canada. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states celebrated Labor Day.
