THE SUPREME COURT AND CATHOLIC TEACHING
When the United States
Supreme Court, in the decision
Roe versus Wade (1973),
permitted abortion on demand,
that decision did not change Catholic teaching on the
sanctity of life. We believe that life is sacred and
inviolate from its earliest beginnings in the womb of
the mother until the time of natural death. For the past
42 years, the Supreme Court decision, the most liberal
abortion law in the world, has resulted in many millions
of abortions. The Catholic Church has made a
concerted effort, along with other religious groups,
especially Evangelical Christians to put pressure on
legislators for a constitutional amendment to change
the court’s decision. The annual March for Life in
Washington DC, non- violent protests outside of
abortion clinics, relentless letterwriting campaigns to
legislators, pro-life committees in parishes throughout
the country, prayer vigils and more will win out
eventually. Alternatives to abortion, homes for unwed
mothers and counseling as well as spiritual and
economic support provided by the Catholic Church and
other concerned religious groups, are a powerful
witness to our pro-life stance. A large majority of the
American public disagrees with the Supreme Court
decision. Roe versus Wade is centered on life and
death; the highest degree of moral gravity is involved.
The recent Supreme Court decision legalizing
same-sex marriage Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)
involves same-sex marriage which the Supreme Court
has stated is a civil right. That civil decision does not
change the church’s teaching regarding the sacrament
of matrimony. Marriage beautifully joins male and
female, a man and woman in a lifetime and loving union.
By the grace of God their generative love will bless
the couple, the church, and the world with children.
steadfast. We can work hard to bring about the
best for gay people, while disagreeing morally
with any acting out of gay sexual orientation.
Discrimination against gays simply because they
are gay is morally wrong. We follow a Divine
Master whose public ministry was centered on
the rejected people of his own day and time.
He surrounded himself with public sinners, along
with his disciples, and his ministry was marked
by table fellowship. As a prophet of God, he
deliberately ate meals with prostitutes, tax
collectors, and those considered by religious
leaders as untouchable and unlovable.
As the body of Christ, the Catholic Church
must be in the forefront of compassionate care.
When we meet another human being, we know
that we are spiritually meeting Christ, an image
of the Creator. We who follow the Master pray
for the Holy Spirit to live the life of self emptying, forgiving love and action toward
others that Christ, the Word of God embraced.
Archbishop Gregory of Atlanta understands the
Supreme Court decision as “an opportunity to
continue the vitally important dialogue of human
encounter, especially between those of
diametrically differing opinions regarding (the
ruling’s) outcome.”
Peace, Father Bruce
While as a church we disagree categorically with
same-sex marriage, the Catholic church’s pastoral
approach to love and respect and be sensitive to all
people regardless of their sexual orientation, remains

Bulletin Reflection:
“Every worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above,”
says St. James in the second reading. But, he reminds us, true
worship of God involves using those good gifts to benefit the less
fortunate. Good stewardship is not optional; it is the hallmark of
our faith!

sacrament is the Church’s prayer for health and healing and
should not be delayed until there is danger of death. Please
call the rectory to speak with a priest. Also, to arrange for
Communion to be brought to the homebound, please call the
rectory to have a priest visit. After the priest visits,
arrangements can be made for a Eucharistic Minister to
regularly bring communion to the homebound.
