KILIAN PRAY FOR US Sunday, August 16, 2015 FALLING IN LOVE WITH JESUS AND THE SUNDAY EUCHARIST Mass attendance is below 20 percent in most parishes on Long Island. In an effort to understand Why? a questionnaire was taken of 284 parents of second graders at St. Rose in Massapequa. Very similar results are likely at St. Kilian. 1. How often do you participate at weekend Mass? A. 19% claimed they celebrate Mass at least once a week. B. 31% of parents claimed two or three times a month. C. 65% of parents indicated that they did not attend Mass at all during the year; or only on Christmas or Easter and some special occasions. 2. What are some of the reasons why you do not participate in mass? A. Sports and other Children’s ActivitiesB. Too difficult to take the children C. Need time off on the weekend due to their busy work schedule. D. Spouse is not Catholic E. Mass is too boring F. Can’t understand the priest’s accent (foreign born priests) 3. What would you need to participate in parish life on a more steady basis? A. More time - 137 out of 284 (55%) parents believe that if they had more time they would worship on a more regular basis. B. A babysitter would help. C. Christian parenting skills offered to parents. Only one of the reasons why parents do not participate at Mass have to do with understanding the Mass. All their reasons for not participating have to do with other priorities. These parents consider these other priorities as more important than receiving the Body and Blood of Christ weekly, and participating with a community of believers in worshiping God. Telling them to make God first in their family is not convincing them. Getting our priorities in order happens when we encounter and experience God’s love intimately. By analogy, it is like falling in love. When we fall in love we cannot get enough of the other person. We want to know all about them, their history and experiences, their personality, joys and sorrows. In addition, we want to tell everyone we know all about them. How wonderful he or she is! The same is true when we fall in love with Jesus. We cannot get enough of him. “Don’t place the cart before the horse”. First comes a life-changing spiritual awakening. Second, once this happens, we want to learn all about Him in prayer, the Bible, the sacraments- especially the Eucharist, and in the teachings of our church. What most parents have not experienced is a personal friendship with Jesus Christ. Spiritual awakenings need to be fostered by church leaders. Prayer opportunities, the development of small Christian communities, and parish missions allow for the Holy Spirit to work in the lives of those who attend them. How do we encourage nonparticipating Catholics to come to such spiritual events, so that true conversion can occur in their lives? Since the desire for sacraments like baptism, first Communion and confirmation still draw parents and their children into parishes, we need to have parent meetings designed to foster spiritual awakening. Perhaps mandating that parents participate in a Cursillo weekend as they prepare their child for first holy Communion. A prayerful encounter with Jesus will lead to a deep hunger for the Scripture and the sacraments. Personal invitation, one to one, is also an effective way. Since nearly 20% of young parents express a desire for weekly Eucharist, these young parents can witness to their peers the importance of worshiping God with a faith community on a regular basis. We need to keep offering opportunities for baptized Catholics to fall in love with the Lord. Until that happens, we will not see them in church very often. As our parish Steering Committee develops our parish vision statement, spirituality and opportunities for encounters with Jesus Christ need to be a top priority. T H E P A S T O R’ S P A G E “And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people,’ and immediately they left their nets and followed him.” (Mark 1. 17-18) Peace, Father Bruce St. Kilian Catholic Church 3 Sunday, August 16, 2015 SUNDAY - August 16 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Readings: 1st—Proverbs 9:1-6; 2nd— Ephesians 5:15-20; Gospel—John 6:51-58 7:00 For the Parishioners of St. Kilian 8:00 Susan B. The tragic reality of abortion on demand in our nation is a black mark on us as a society and an evil that can never be overlooked. Now this practice of the taking of innocent life in the womb is being compounded by the largest abortion provider in our nation by a practice that should horrify us all, even the abortion providers themselves. The women on the tapes who described the procedures of late term abortion and suggested “better ways” might be found to kill the child so that “more organs can be harvested for sale” brings them and us to a new low in a society already become coarse in its difference to abortion, euthanasia and teenage suicide, not to mention the senseless killings that have been increasing in frequency across our land. I would suggest that four things need to be done. First, the U.S. government should be called upon to stop financing Planned Parenthood with taxpayers dollars, some $500 million according to one source. Second, Planned Parenthood should “come clean,” admit they were wrong, ask for an outside audit and, without our accepting what they do for a living, promise us and our society that they will cease this practice of making money from acts that compound the horrific evil of abortion itself. Third, every citizen, and especially we who are Catholics, should demand of every candidate for public office that he or she take a public stand on whether or not they support or oppose Planned Parenthood’s heinous and cynical profit making from the tragedy of aborted children. Fourth, we must pray daily for an end to the tragic scourge that is abortion, the killing of the innocent, the harm done to women and the shame of our society.
