What will a green campus in a sustainable
city of the future look like?
Can we plan today to develop the models
for future urban societies?
What major changes need to occur if we
are to maintain the expectations of our
current lifestyles especially as we need to
adapt to climate change?
What are the challenges for urban infrastructure planning and management if our
cities are to be come carbon neutral?
What skills will young practitioners need to
address these issues?
COURSE
BACKGROUND
Mixed-use development is a basic part of sustainable
urban ecology. Most university sites like the campus of
Hochschule Wismar, University of Technology, Business
and Design are currently too isolated from other businesses and cultural functions. The Campus of Wismar today
is like a “closed and partially silent area” devoted only
to university purposes and teaching aspects during the
week. How to open the area and make it part of the
city structure? Can the campus become a new “Green
Campus-Univer-City” together with the UNESCO World
Heritage City of Wismar and the whole district of Friedenshof?
The course is part of the strategy of internationalization
of the University and Faculty of Design with the aim to
establish a new joint study degree program in urban
ecology. During the workshop there is a kick-off meeting
of lecturers who are interested in the development of a
new study degree program of “urban ecology”.
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
The workshop includes a session focusing on the future
of the University. Discussions during the workshop will include the need to density the campus, how to create a
greater mix of uses on the campus, the need for more
interesting and vibrant routes through the campus and
more activity at weekend, day and night. At the end of
the workshop the working groups will present ideas for
new development and new uses to be sensitively incorporated into the campus area. These various projects
could form part of the briefing or scope for future master
planning and competition.

International Students will be working on
this project during theInternational Wismarer Architecture Dialogue.
Lectures and debates will take place with
experts from China, Australia, the Netherlands and Germany on following topics:
Urban ecology design, mobility and green
cities.
In addition to lectures, workshops and exhibitions a faculty meeting of the new course
“Urban ecology“ will be organized in which
teachers have the opportunity to interact.
AIMS OF THE
WORKSHOP
> Interweave campus and city life / activities for example
in Wismar.
> Develop an integrated planning concept for the campus according to the ecological criteria.
> Specify ecological guidelines and criteria for an exemplary international campus, such as Wismar is. (working on
subjects like landscape and urban geomorphology, climate, energy, water, material flow, economic and socialcultural aspects, international aspects)
> Find out guidelines for implementation of green planning principles and technologies.
> Inspire new types of interdisciplinary collaboration between students, scientists, citizens and architects.
> Bring sustainability and green design issues into focus.
> Inspire new types of collaboration that will provide
more intelligent and green designs.
> Find out guidelines for development of a green city.
OUTCOMES OF COURSE PARTICIPATION
Students will experience a truly innovative
educational activity.
COURSE FORMAT
> Class sessions in Wismar, Germany
> Workshops and studio sessions
> Employers are seeking communicative and outward
looking graduates who are ready to engage in multidisciplinary global work activity. Participating in this
course would enhance these skills which employers are
looking for.

> Background reading
> Students will get greater knowledge of sustainability
and acquire skills to help adapt to climate change.
> Knowledge of urban infrastructure planning and management will be communicated

> Students will gain experience working with teams on
complex multidisciplinary problems affecting society.
> Travel logistics and planning
Course runs in intensive mode in Germany over an approximate five day period involving workshops, site inspections, group meetings etc.
ASSESSMENT
There is no examination for this course.
Assessment is by Project Report, brief Reflective Essay to
be completed in sufficient time following the finalization of the scheduled contact period.
