The Little Dragon Playhouse’s Fundamental classes allow our youngest students to unlock their unique theatrical creativity and discover how their bodies and voices bring comedic and dramatic situations to life. They will find inspiration as they explore storybooks through creative drama, movement, music and art. These young performers will create characters and the world of the story using a multitude of props, costumes and crafts. Children will perform in an end-of-the-year showcase, as well as informal “sharings” throughout the year. FOR GRADES: Munchkins, monsters, mermaids and dinosaurs spark your young explorer’s imagination as he/she enters the storybook worlds of fantasy and adventure. Creativity and selfexpression are nurtured through a fun mixture of drama, music, movement and art. KinderPlay encourages self-expression, creativity and independence. Children will perform in an end-of-the-year showcase, as well as informal “sharings” throughout the year. $270 per semester Adventure Time FOR GRADES: Jump into the joys of storytelling through dramatic play in a creative environment in Adventure Time class. Working with their classmates, young performers explore imaginary worlds, while developing basic skills in character development, movement and voice. Using theatrical techniques, students will explore stage presence, basic dance techniques and body coordination. Physical and vocal skills develop through role-playing, while creativity and self-expression are nurtured through improvisation and fun crafts. Children will perform in an end-of-the-year showcase, as well as informal “sharings” throughout the year. $270 per semester Storybook Theatre FOR GRADES: The spotlight shines on the body, the voice and the imagination in Storybook Theatre. Artistic energy will be focused on the exploration of dramatic structure and new creative movement techniques. Together, the young performers continue to develop CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY COURSE SCHEDULE 2014-15 language skills, unique characters, balance, coordination, and stage presence. Children will perform in an end-of-the-year showcase, as well as informal “sharings” throughout the year. $270 per semester KIDZ CREATE FOR GRADES: Your child will experience an introduction to the creative and performing arts in an encouraging and safe environment. Singing, dancing, theatre games and art projects will certainly be the highlight of their week—right here at the SCC! $125 per 6-week Session FOR GRADES: Does your child enjoy singing, acting, dancing and art? Would you like to see him/her try something new? This 6-week class will introduce children to the creative and performing arts in an encouraging and safe environment— right here at the SCC! $125 per 6-week Session Stitch and Gather FOR GRADES: This course is an introduction into the foundations of fiber art and traditional crafts. It is an opportunity for students to explore the rich world of textiles, embroidery, patchwork, knitting and weaving. In addition to these fundamental techniques, students will be guided in the process of dyeing material through the use of natural dyes which will include a deep investigation into plants and their role in this art form. $125 per 6-week Session 3 T he Junior Conservatory builds on the groundwork laid in the Fundamental years and continues to develop the young performer’s craft through training and performance opportunities. Students will expand their theatrical and communication skills through improvisation, story development and character exploration. 4 SCRANTON CULTURAL CENTER AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE NURTURING THE PROMISING PERFORMER/ARTIST Stage Door Left, Right, Write! Intro to Acting and Movement for Actors— Broadway Styles Middle School Creative Writing Intensive FOR GRADES: Are you looking for something new and fun for your child? Then, this class is perfect for the beginner! Intro to Acting explores the basics of the body, the voice and the imagination in theatre. Students will be challenged to create characters and improvise scenes, as well as engage in exercises in movement and voice- all helping to build selfconfidence. Movement for Actors-Broadway Styles will instill a better understanding and appreciation for the art of dance, Broadway-style in particular. This class is perfect for training the actor to dance for musical theatre productions, and is designed to create an environment that is not only educational, but fun! $590 per semester FOR GRADES: Get ready to get writing in the six-week intensive course! Experimentation and genre-bending will be encouraged as middle school students explore their creative voices with writing prompts, inspirational experiences and group activities. Reading and writing exercises will expose students to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, playwriting and more. Students will also practice reading techniques in preparation for a public presentation of their work. $185 per 6-week intensive FUNdamentals of Improv Advanced Acting and Movement for Actors— Broadway Styles FOR GRADES: In this six-week class, students will be introduced to the wonderful world of Improvisation! Through improv games and activities, students will gain creativity, teamwork, and the ability to think on their feet, all while having fun in this spontaneous class! $185 per 6-week intensive FOR GRADES: Artistic Steppingstones This course provides a physical and vocal approach to character creation through use of play scripts, improvisation and exercises, especially designed for the young experienced actor. Students will develop an awareness of their physical and vocal instruments, and will learn how to use their bodies and voices to illuminate characters on stage. Movement for Actors—Broadway Styles will instill a better understanding and appreciation for the art of dance, Broadway-style in particular. This class is perfect for training the actor to dance for musical theatre productions and is designed to create an environment that is not only educational but fun! $590 per semester Foundations in Fine Art Bringing Characters to Life CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY COURSE SCHEDULE 2014-15 FOR GRADES: This class will focus on the different materials and methods of visual arts. Subjects ranging from expressionism to realism will be explored as well as a broad range of artistic mediums including charcoal, paint, watercolor, oil pastel and collage. We will draw inspiration from past artists and movements while developing our own creative voice. The goal will be to introduce each student to the endless possibilities and exciting world of Fine Art. $325 per semester 5 CaPAA’S BROADWAY-STYLE MUSICAL AND DANCE OFFERINGS 6 SCRANTON CULTURAL CENTER AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE SHOWTIME PRODUCTION— CaPAA’s BROADWAY Willy Wonka BOUND DANCE TROUPE By audition only—email [email protected] SPRING 2015 Sorcerer’s Apprentice MAGIC CLASS taught by DAMIAN THE MAGICIAN! FOR GRADES: This highly interactive class offers a concentrated course on the Art of Magic. Students will learn professional secrets of the trade as well as how to stand in front of an audience to perform them. Hands-on instruction will be provided by Damian the Magician, Pennsylvania’s Foremost Magical Entertainer. Each student will receive a high quality Magic Kit designed personally by Damian which is theirs to keep at the conclusion of the class. Parents and friends are entitled to attend a performance by the students and Damian at the Winter Showcase. Magic kit included in the price of the class. $425 per 8-week intensive includes MAGIC SUPPLIES FOR GRADES: for more information Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to chocolate-covered life. The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder and new songs by Leslie Bricusse (Jekyll & Hyde, Doctor Dolittle) and Anthony Newley, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is a scrumdiddilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth! Workshops in audition preparation are included. This production class will expand the young actor’s skills by delving into character development and script analysis. The curriculum will explore a full spectrum of Broadway styles—Classic to Modern. $325 per semester SHOW CHOIR By audition only for singers/dancers— email [email protected] for more information FOR GRADES: CaPAA’s Show Choir performs swing, jazz, pop, and show music with choreography. Students must pass a vocal and dance audition to be considered for membership. This ensemble performs at both the Winter and Spring showcases as well as a variety of community events throughout the year. $325 per semester It’s SHOWTIME: Soup to Nuts! FOR GRADES: In this fast-paced performance class your child would run the gamut of creating a show from nothing. Truly the “I’ve got a theatre, let’s put on a show!” adage. Students will begin with an idea and through improvisation, theatre games, and creative writing create a short theatre piece. In just six weeks, they will create the script, props and costumes, ending six weeks later with a fully finished theatre piece to be presented in a final performance. $185 per 6-week intensive CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY COURSE SCHEDULE 2014-15 7 TT he Senior Conservatory is the most advanced training ground for the SCC performer and artist. The Senior Conservatory explores drama skills through deep engagement in improvisa- tion, story development, vocal work, physical theatre, script analysis and character study. Students will be developing their playmaking skills by putting their words and ideas into dramatic form. Students will also work with specific theatrical techniques and styles such as Shakespeare, Method, Meisner, directing concepts and writing skills. Students hone their performance skills through a variety of challenging classes and performance opportunities. 8 SCRANTON CULTURAL CENTER AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE TRAINING THE THRIVING PERFORMER/ARTIST Stage Door Improv Theatre Intro to Acting for Teens and Movement for Actors— Broadway Styles This six-week intensive is for high school students who want to learn improvisation. Students will learn storytelling, timing, how to create characters on the spot, as well as playing many improv games. Through group activities and games, teamwork, creative thinking and confidence building activities, students will love this unscripted class! $185 per 6-week intensive FOR GRADES: This introductory class is a perfect fit for any teen who may be interested in the performing arts. Instruction in basic acting principles and vocal technique will be emphasized, along with how the body can be used to help tell stories. Students will create characters and improvise scenes, as well as engage in exercises in movement and voice—all helping to build self-confidence. This class is perfect for training the actor to dance for musical theatre productions, and is designed to create an environment that is not only educational, but fun. $590 per semester MainStage Players Advanced Acting for Teens and Movement for Actors—Broadway Styles Vision to Canvas Foundations of Fine Art FOR GRADES: This class offers an opportunity to explore your unique creative style through understanding visual mediums and techniques of historical artists and movements. We will focus on self expression by developing our own visual language and gaining insight into the practices of artists past and present. Mediums and topics covered will include Drawing, Painting, Collage, Print-making, Mixed Media, and the foundations of different artistic methods and styles. $325 per semester Prospective MainStage Players students must arrange an interview with the CaPAA Theatre Staff. FOR GRADES: For the more experienced actor, this class focuses on scene work, character development and improvisation to develop and expand spontaneity, creativity, imagination and humor. Advanced actors will expand their skills by delving into character development and script analysis, with emphasis on creating acting objectives, discovering scenes through character relationships and exploring monologues. Students will perform in an end-of-the-year showcase, as well as informal “sharings” throughout the year. This class is for students with previous experience. Movement for actors/Broadway styles will instill a better understanding and appreciation for the art of dance, Broadway-style in particular and prepare them for greater success in dance auditions. $590 per semester Write to the Other Side High School Creative Writing Intensive FOR GRADES: High school students interested in writing as a hobby or as a possible career are encouraged to attend this inspiration-driven class. Prompts and hands-on exercises will empower students to write their own personal essays, short stories, poems, plays and more. The class will collaborate to create a literary magazine and will learn a variety of presentation techniques as students prepare for their own night of readings. $185 per 6-week intensive CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY COURSE SCHEDULE 2014-15 9 VOICE LESSONS SCC’s CaPAA is happy to offer group (2nd–4th grade) and private (grade 5 and up) voice lessons to children and adults. Whether singing or acting, the voice is one of the actor’s tools that needs as much training as the body does. Students will work on how the singing voice is produced, learn breathing techniques, and also how to produce tone through a series of practical exercises. Source material includes the classical repertoire, as well as Broadway scores. Voice students will have the opportunity to perform in the Winter and Spring showcases. Private Voice Lessons for the Aspiring Singer Interview required— lesson day and time arranged during interview. Our teachers are certified and degreed with a mission to not just teach you or your child how to play the piano but to make it a fun experience! Beginner, intermediate and advanced piano students are welcome. Interview required— lesson day and time arranged during interview. Access to a keyboard is mandatory. Student must commit to at least a full semester of lessons. ROSEMARY HAY (Co-Chair, Theatre) is the Co-Artistic Director of REV Theatre Company. Formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company, she is currently professor of acting and director at Temple University and the nationally renowned University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has worked professionally Off Broadway, regionally and in the UK. Initiating the partnership between SCC and REV, she will direct Hamlet and Cabaret for the SCC in 2015. RUDY CAPORASO (CoChair, Theatre) is a New York City-based actor, the Co-Artistic Director of REV Theatre Company and has worked extensively Off Broadway, regionally and in the UK. He has taught numerous after-school and summer programs in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. He is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and is a member of Actors Equity Association. DAWN McGURL (Costume Designer/Program Manager) has been the Producer, Costume Designer and Assistant Director at Dunmore High School for the past 10 years. Dawn served as co-designer for the Scranton Shakespeare Festival’s 2013 production of Comedy of Errors and was recently featured in a New York Times article featuring her work with the TDF Costume Collection. Dawn is looking forward to working with the creative team for the SCC’s production of Harry Connick Jr’s new musical The Happy Elf as Costume Designer. BILL MUTIMER (Theatre) has a BFA and MFA from The University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He is the head of the Theatre Department at Northampton Community College as well as an Adjunct Professor for Muhlenberg College. He has performed in, directed, choreographed and produced hundreds of shows for college, middle and high school as well as community and professional theater. Bill leads the Theatre Dept. for SCC’s Summer Camp Program. LAUREL RADZIESKI (Theatre, Creative Writing) is a writer and theater professional who earned her MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College. Her production experience includes directing, acting, playwriting, lighting design and costuming. She is currently an adjunct professor at Keystone College and her recent projects include serving as Assistant Director for the Dietrich Theater’s After School Theatre Arts program. She is the Assistant Director for the SCC’s upcoming holiday production, The Happy Elf. JENNIFER SMERALDO (Theatre, Improv) is a professional vocalist, actor, director and musical director. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A in Musical Theatre from Wilkes University and is pursuing her M.Ed in Spec. Ed from Bloomsburg Univ. She worked for the PA Renaissance Faire as a performer/director, taught at the Wilkes Conservatory and directed musicals for the Greater Nanticoke Area School District. CRISTINA SOHNS WILLIAMS (Dance Chair) has been teaching dance for the past twenty eight years where she has been Artistic Director of the Cristina Sohns Williams Studio of Dance in Hamlin, teacher at the Linn McDonald School of Dance and Scranton Civic Ballet Company. She is the choreographer for the Dunmore High School Crimson Company and show choirs, N. Pocono High School and is Dunmore Elementary’s Artist in Residence. She is a member of Dance Educators of America and is an adjunct faculty member at Marywood University. Tina leads the Dance Dept. for the SCC’s Summer Camp Program. SHERI MELCHER (CaPAA Director, Music Chair) is a professional pianist, musical theater director, choral conductor and educator. She has enjoyed an extensive performance career, including chamber music recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She has musically directed over one hundred productions for professional, community, college and high school theater programs and was a core member of the music faculty at Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia for 20 years. She is currently the Director of the SCC’s Creative and Performing Arts Academy/Summer Camp Program and will be musically directing The Happy Elf, Willy Wonka and Cabaret this upcoming season, in addition to Avenue Q at Northampton Community College. KIMBERLY CROFCHICK (Theatre, Music) a professional soprano vocalist, theater director, musical director, educator, and vocal coach. She has a dual Music Education and Vocal Pedagogy degree from Mansfield University. After graduation, she began teaching Middle School music and giving voice lessons privately, which ultimately inspired her to open her CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY COURSE SCHEDULE 2014-15 own non-profit children’s theatre company—The Limelight Players. BENJAMIN ADCROFT (Visual Arts Chair) is from Scranton and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His work has been featured in various NYC galleries and published in Discover magazine. He has been commissioned by The Vintage, WhatTheFork Food Truck, Bar Hill, The Daisy Collective and maintains a strong relationship with local business. Ben leads the Art Dept. for SCC’s Summer Camp program and owns his own studio, located in Downtown Scranton. CHRISTINE MARIANI (Visual Arts, Dance) is a trained artist and dancer who graduated from Marywood University with a BFA in painting. Christine has had many years of experience teaching dance to children from toddler age to high school and has choreographed local high school productions. Christine also has experience working with the physically and mentally disabled, helping them to explore creative projects through summer art camps. Some of Christine’s personal paintings are displayed in galleries throughout PA. NICOLE LAUREL (Visual Arts) is from New York City and received her Bachelors in Public Relations with a double minor in History and Fine Arts at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Through out her life she has always been drawn to nature, working with children and art. With her background in fiber arts and farming, it was no surprise when Nicole started to forage and make her own plant dyes to create her own unique color pallet with textiles. Nicole loves raising awareness of the interconnectedness of ourselves and our environment and sharing basic skills that inspire her students to develop their own individual creativity. With a lifetime of performing to his credit, DAMIAN THE MAGICIAN is The Northeast’s Most Recognizable Name in Magic and Pennsylvania’s Foremost Magical Entertainer. He has played every venue imaginable, including private corporate events, schools, hotels, nightclubs, and resorts from coast to coast. He is a two-time recipient of Electric City’s “ Best Magician” Award and is a member of The Order of Merlin, the highest honor bestowed by the International Brotherhood of Magicians. 11 420 N.
