Core Values
Have you had any home projects that needed to be completed? The
deadbolt on our front door stopped working a few weeks ago. The key
wouldn’t turn any more when we put it in the lock. I called the company to find out what I should do. They said, “Take it to Home Depot or
Lowes and have them reset the lock.” I removed it from the door, took
it to the store, and the man who helped me came back with the core
of the lock in pieces and said, “I’m really sorry! It just exploded when I
pulled it out!” That experience reminded me how valuable it is to have
the right tools and expertise to get a job done.
Earlier this year, Salem adopted a Mission Statement and a set of Core
Values that guide us and our ministry. The first core value we adopted
was this: God’s Word and Sacraments (Lord’s Supper and Baptism)
are the Means of Grace God uses to transform people and strengthen
faith. Salem commits to clear Biblical teaching and the preaching of
God’s Word to bring people to Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15
-16; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29).
This core value provides us with the perfect tools to accomplish our
mission. We can’t get anything done on our own. We need to use the
right tools, and God has provided them with his Word and Sacraments.
Now, we can offer forgiveness of sins, because God’s Word promises
it. We can wash away sin, because Baptism is that wonderful washing
of renewal and regeneration in the Holy Spirit. We can have personal
assurance that our sins are forgiven, because we receive Jesus’ body
and blood at the Lord’s Table. We have all the right tools to get our
work done, thanks to these incredible means of grace!

Women’s Guild
Women’s Guild will have their first fall meeting
on Thursday, October 6. We meet at 1:15 pm in
the Fellowship hall the first Thursday of each
month. All ladies of the congregation are invited
to attend. Plan to join us!

Paul, who offer Monday Night Services at 7 pm, every Monday,

Parish Nurse Fund
We currently have $8,092.19 in the Parish Nurse Fund. It
costs about $500 a month for the Parish Nurse’s services. We
rely solely on donations to support the parish nurse program.

COUPON BOX
Do you clip coupons and have coupons you don’t use, or get a
Sunday paper with coupons you don’t use?
Salem now has a coupon box located near the food shelf where
you can drop off any or all of your coupons, coupon booklets,
coupons received in the mail or even coupons printed from the
internet, if you think someone else may be able to use it, please
bring it in.
We would encourage EVERY coupon!
There is no need to have your coupons clipped ahead of time before bringing them in, but if you have the time and are willing to
cut them out, that is also appreciated.
SCRIP
The Scrip ordering schedule is every second and fourth Monday
of the month. Orders should be in no later than noon. Orders
can be picked up in the school office or other arrangements can

Salem Kids Closet
The Salem Kids Closet will be held
October 24—28.
We are now accepting any clothing or

This service is truly a blessing to
many families in our congregation and

News from our Parish Nurse…
The cold and flu season is coming upon us. It’s time to start
thinking how we can prevent colds and flu. The best way to prevent spread of disease is through good old fashioned hand washing. Always wash up after you sneeze. Hand washing for at least
30 seconds under warm water with an antibacterial soap will kill
the cold and flu germs. Cover your cough and sneezes. Avoid
touching your face. Be prepared by having tissues and hand sanitizer handy to use. Daily clean and disinfect any surfaces that
might have been touched. Stay home when you aren't feeling
well. The Center for Disease control recommends you stay
home at least 24 hours after a fever subsides (without the use of
Tylenol or ibuprophen to bring the fever down). Getting immunized can help fight against flu. This year’s 2011-2012 vaccine
will protect against H3N2, and influenza B and the H1N1 virus of
2009. If shots aren’t for you, live intranasal influenza vaccines in
the form of nasal spray are available. They can be used by
healthy people from age 2-49 years old. Be aware, younger children under the age of 9, may need a second dose. Please talk
with your doctor. Some people do not like the idea of mercury
included in with vaccines. If you want to avoid this preservative
ask your doctor for the "thermisol free" vaccine. Please also
keep in mind to get proper rest, nutrition, avoid stress, exercise,
and drink plenty of fluids. Your body is an amazing gift from
God. Some disease and illnesses can be avoided by having a
great immune system, which come from taking care of one's
self. Be advised that if you do get sick with the flu there are antiviral drugs (Tamiflu and Relenza) you can take with a doctor's
prescription. It is important to take these drugs within the first
day or two of the virus. These drugs shorten the length of the
illness. Stay well!

Ladies’ Night Out
All women of the congregation are invited for a Ladies’
Night Out. This is a great opportunity to get to know
the women of our congregation. It will be held every
4th Monday of each month. At Acapulco’s Restaurant,
located in Stillwater, at 6:30 pm This is also a great time
to take advantage of our SCRIP Program—$25 gift
cards for Acapulco are available any time and the great
part is $7.50 can go towards your child’s tuition or tuition assistance! If you have questions about SCRIP, contact Jennifer Agen or Dee Kane (their phone numbers
are listed in the SCRIP article on page 6). If you have
any questions about the Ladies; Night Out, contact Patricia Goplen at 715-441-6878.

Interested in visiting shut-ins? We had a meeting scheduled
in August for those already visiting and anyone interested in getting involved. That meeting had to be postponed and has been
rescheduled for Saturday October 15th from 10AM to 11AM.
College Student Picture Board The Caring Committee is in the
process of updating the college student board if your child is done
with college, please take their picture from the board. If your
child is not on the board yet and is in college, please bring in a
picture with their name, school and major so we can put it on the
board. Thanks for your help!

School News
Enrollment
We are currently at 32 students in preschool.
Kindergarten- 8th grade enrollment is currently at 125.
Rosetta Stone
The 7th and 8th grade have started the Rosetta Stone program. I really think it is going
to be a good addition to our Spanish Curriculum. Rosetta Stone is
an online program that the students work with twice a week. It
has been very well received by the 7th and 8th graders. I have
heard a student say that it is challenging but at the same time
fun.
Sports
We are fielding a soccer team and two volleyball teams. Justin
Krause and Pastor Brohn will be coaching soccer. Deb Hansen will
be coaching B team volleyball while Mrs. Collins coaches A team
volleyball. The season got underway this past Tuesday against
Cross of Christ. All Salem teams were victorious. On Thursday
we played against Christ, N.S.P. The soccer team tied with a score
of 1-1. The volleyball teams both lost 0-2. Good luck the rest of
the season.
Habits of the Heart
As of right now, we have 4 people interested in the Habits of the
Heart program. We look forward to starting this program in the
next month. A big thanks to the people who are willing to volunteer their time for the Salem students.
Terra Nova
We will begin doing our standardized testing starting September
26. The test will take about two weeks. The 3rd-8th grade will
participate in the test taking. We decided to do the test in the
fall rather than the spring. We feel it is more valuable to see
where the kids need help earlier in the year. It also curbs teachers teaching toward a test.
The year is off to a great start!!

Pioneer News
The Pioneers will have one meeting on October 5,
from 6:30 to 8 pm.
Plan to join us on Sunday, October 16, following
the 10:30 am Service, for Fall Fun Day at the
Schaefer property. We will start out with a lunch
and then spend the afternoon enjoying fun and fellowship. There will be hammerschlagen, horseshoes,
Bocce, Board Races and much more!
Everyone is invited to join us!

shaped through your will and your beneficiary designations. Did you
know your government provides you with some tax-advantaged ways
for you to remember the Lord’s work—advantages that can increase

leave a gospel legacy that will enable others to hear God’s promises of
love and forgiveness—a legacy with eternal implications. Won’t you

What kind of estate steward are you? When the Lord calls
you home to heaven, do really know how your estate will be distributed? The typical beneficiaries of estate plans are family, charity, and the
government. You get to pick two of the three to receive the lion’s
share. Which two do you prefer? If you would like to learn more about
charitable gifting vehicles that decrease taxes and increase gifts to fund
ministry, please join us Sunday morning, October 16. Pastor Mike
Hatzung will serve as our presenter. He works as a WELS Christian
giving counselor and will work with you in a free, confidential, and
gospel-based way.

STAND UP AGAINST PROFANITY
Compared to other sins, cursing might seem tame. But Scripture takes a strong stand
against sins of the tongue. God makes it clear that obscenities and impurities have
no place coming out of the mouths of Christ-followers. Unfortunately, Christian kids
often struggle just as much with their words as their unchurched peers do. Infractions range from the ubiquitous and casual use of the f-word to rude, suggestive, and
vicious references about other people. ―Profane‖ means ―to treat something sacred
with abuse, irreverence, or contempt.‖ So when kids use the f-word, they treat something sacred (the act of intercourse) with contempt. Try these approaches to tackle
profanity:
THE VIEW

When Gallup researchers asked
13- to 17-year-olds to rank a
long list of ―serious behaviors,‖
kids said using profanity in public was the least serious offense
of all.

The Center for Media and Public Affairs found that profanity is
used every six minutes on network TV shows, every three
minutes in movies, and every
two minutes on premium cable
shows.

To combat high-tech gossip,
some schools are punishing students for what they post on the
Internet after school hours.
• Ask kids to keep a running tally of the number of profanities they hear during
one day at school or one night of TV-watching. Have them report back; then ask
them if they were surprised by what they learned.
• Tell kids the truth. Research shows that people who curse are respected less in our
society and have fewer deep relationships. Cursing also can cause other people to
stumble and violates our calling to love our neighbors as ourselves.
• Challenge kids to use only “prayer” words. If they wouldn’t use the word in conversation with God, then it isn’t appropriate in any other context. Give kids alternative
attention-grabbing words that can substitute for profanity.

Clear the air. People-pleasers don’t
want to rock the boat. This is a major
way the enemy gets a foothold in relationships. We tend to bottle up our anger until we blow. If you don’t lovingly
confront an issue right away, it will
only fuel anger until you confront in
frustration.
Often, things that eventually become
major issues start with bad communication and continue to build. Put concerns
on the table as
soon as they happen. That clears up misunderstandings and opens the door to
speedy reconciliation.
Speak less. This may seem like a contradiction to the first point, but sometimes
when we’re stressed we tend to be too
confrontational. We want to put people in
their place. We often end up in arguments
that only contribute to the problem and
don’t preemptively lead us to healing.
Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing
at all. Prayerfully seek when it’s right to
confront and when it’s right to be silent.

band has never been labeled a Christian band, despite the fact that lead
singer Dustin Kensrue is a staunch
Christian and his lyrics are often
straight from the Bible. Their songs
deal with topics such as Peter’s dark
night of betrayal, Christ’s invitation
for us to take rest in him, and how
earth isn’t our real home. The music
is as deep and thoughtful as the lyrics. Kensrue recently became worship leader at the O.C. branch of
Mars Hill Church.
Background: This crunk band
incorporates punk, hardcore,
R&B, dance, electronica, funk,
and rap metal into party songs.
It’s as crazy as it sounds, but the
songs are hits. Three band members are brothers. They’ve been
criticized for using almost no
overt references to God or their
faith, though they do maintain
positive lyrics.
Our Take: Despite director Paul
W.S. Anderson’s history of the
Resident Evil movies, the action
here will likely be closer to the
recent Pirates of the Caribbean
films—epic action with a few
laughs, but nothing too offensive.

Batman: Arkham City—This is a sequel to one of the best games to come out in recent years. The first game was a
blast, with a wide-open world and gameplay that was a super-fun mixture of stealth and fighting. The female villains
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy wore skimpy outfits, so if they make a reappearance, that would be the biggest red flag
in an otherwise teenage-friendly game.
Dark Souls—This sequel to the cult hit Demon’s Souls will likely be very similar to that dark, violent action game.
The gimmick here is that the game is incredibly hard, and there are no places to save within levels; players die and go
all the way back to the beginning. This one isn’t for the kiddos.

Senior High YES is a night of Bible Study, Games, and fun in the YES Room at Salem. It runs from 7pm until about 8:30pm.
