This year the focus of the Charrette will be around three ponds within the community (Miller’s, Murray’s, and Butler’s Pond). The recent developmental pressure happening within these watersheds make these areas an excellent Charrette focus. Working groups will develop an evaluation of the benefits of green infrastructure based on the five pillars of sustainability: environment, social, economic, cultural and governance. Charrette Outcomes A position paper will be developed by the Design Charrette participants, then presented to the Town of Portugal Cove - St. Phillip’s that suggests a planning framework for improved the area which has been presented by the town. Design Charrette participants will receive: • Participant kits containing all required materials for the site to which they are assigned • Lunch and nutrition breaks • Input on the final report • Copy of the final report Municipal Partner speakers 2015 AGF Keynote Speaker Ken Phillips, CAO Conservation Halton Starting his career as a summer student, Ken has worked for 4 different conservation authorities since 1990. For the past 9 years Ken has held the position of Chief Administrative Officer of Conservation Halton and he was previously the General Manager of the Crowe Valley Conservation Authority for five and a half years. He serves as a member of Conservation Ontario’s Executive Committee, is a Director of the Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network and the Chair of the Conservation Ontario Environmental Education Committee. Ken holds a BA (hons) and MA from McMaster University. Christa Wright, Coordinator Agriculture in the Classroom, NL Federation of Agriculture Prior to starting her role with the NL Federation of Agriculture in 2010, Christia worked from 1999 - 2008 as Secretary Manager of Chicken Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador. Christa was recently elected as Vice President of Agriculture in the Classroom Canada. It is through her work that she helps to kids build awareness, become lifelong learners and have an early connection to agriculture. Peggy Head, Pat’s Plants & Gardens Greenhouse Manager at Pat’s Plants & Gardens, Peggy has been with the business for over 12 years. Peggy is Landscape NL Retail Representative on the National Committee and has been part of the Garden Centres Canada Committee since 2013. This year she was selected as Landscape NL 2015 Volunteer of the year. Prior to findering her passion in the horticultural industry she worked with computers and insurance. Evan Murray, Murray’s Garden Centre and Horticuture Services Evan Murray is co-owner and manager with Murray’s Garden Centre and Horticulture Services. Evan has a Horticulturist Certificate from the University of Guelph, a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in Chemistry from the University of Victoria and a Master’s of Environmental Management from Royal Roads University. He has worked extensively within the environmental sector, focusing largely on analytical chemistry, water quality assessment, and waste water remediation. Evan also has experience in Landscape Installation, Nursery Production, and Garden Centre Retail. Sarah Crocker, Education Coordinator, Food First NL Sarah Crocker in her role supports groups across the province to implement community-based food security initiatives, including community gardens and senior’s food celebrations, and research in food policy. In her spare time she’s a member of the St. John’s Seed Library and the Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network. Sarah is a graduate of Earth Science at Memorial University and also farms in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, applying over 10 years of experience growing food security from the ground up! Ralph Jarvis, Manager Salmonier Nature Park, Dept of Environment and Conservation The Department of Environment and Conservation’s Wildlife Division works with communities, partner groups and private landowners to increase awareness and conservation of wildlife habitat. Key programs in the effort include NL-Eastern Habitat Joint Ventures/Municipal Habitat Stewardship Program and the Salmonier Nature Park Backyard Habitat program. Collectively, these programs have secured nearly 15,000 hectares of wildlife habitat and impacted an even greater area by supporting wise-use principles in municipal planning and home landscaping. Tess Hemeon/Megan Marshall, Autism Society of NL Tess Hemeon is Manager of Advocacy & Communications. Megan Marshall is the Transitions Program Coordinator. Megan runs the Transitions Program at the Elaine Dobbin Centre, a program designed to provide opportunity for youth and adults with ASD to discover interests and make connections in the community. Staff at ASNL are using their green space to enhance the lives of people with autism.
