This year’s Co-Chairs, Marcia Masulla and Kristin Milner worked tirelessly, along with the entire committee, to create a totally fabulous event. From the moment they walked in, guests and their pups experienced the star treatment: glamour shots on the “red carpet” by the Paw-parazzi at the Yelp Photo Booth by photographer Rebecca Ward, plus a delicious treat from Pedigree at the Marilyn Monroe Strolling Table and a complimentary Lipman cocktail hour. Attendees then perused the Baxter Bailey & Company pop-up store, full of everything the discriminating mutt could ever desire, and the silent auction complete with a large selection of items such as trips, jewelry, tickets and, of course, plenty of doggie loot! United Way Campaign You can designate your United Way donations to Nashville Humane Association. Simply include our agency code: 7075. NHA’s Volunteer Program 5 NHA Celebrates Top Tails Donor Society Members 6 The grand ballroom set the stage for the highlight of the evening, the Canine Couture Fashion Show, hosted by super-songstress Kellie Pickler. And the star power did not stop there. Seventeen celebrity walkers (Susie Brown, Heather Byrd, Stephen Cochran, Charles Crabbe, Sarah Darling, Allison DeMarcus, Margaret Ellis, Cortland Finnegan, Karla Lawson, Dean Miller, Jamie O’Neal, Julie Roberts, Mike Smith, Shane Tallant, Jimmy Wayne, Hilary Williams and Holly Williams) came out in support of NHA to walk some of our most stylish shelter residents down the runway, showcasing the one-of-a-kind doggie fashions and accessories created by Nashville’s most talented designers: Baxter Josie 6 Continued on page 2... Couch George Crook Maclin Davis Mission Driven At the conclusion of the Nashville Humane Association’s monthly staff meetings, each employee expresses a “mission moment.” Everyone takes a second to reflect, then shares a personal story of something they witnessed that exemplifies NHA’s mission of finding responsible homes, controlling pet overpopulation and promoting the humane treatment of animals. It’s a time for laughter, joyous tears and elevated passion. In that same spirit, we would like to share with you some of our many 2011 mission moments: NHA proudly placed 2,962 companion pets into loving homes More than 310 animals were adopted thanks to the continued support and special promotions by our friends at Comcast, WSMV Channel 4, and WTVF News Channel 5 NHA successfully spayed and neutered 8,106 animals through our Community Spay and Neuter Program and ROVER NHA’s Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) assisted HSUS and ASPCA in four separate counties across Tennessee, caring for and placing 61 animals into healthy, loving homes NHA’s Community Pet Food Bank served the needs of Davidson County residents by distributing approximately 15,000 pounds of dry food and 9,000 cans of wet food Nashville Scene Voted NHA #1 for Best Animal Shelter NHA was recognized by the Nashville Paws Reader’s Choice Awards • #1 Best Spay Program - ROVER • #1 Best Pet Festival - Dog Day • #2 Best Animal Shelter NHA (out of approximately 5,000 community animal shelters nationwide) was named one of the Top Ten Emergency Placement Partners of 2011 by the Humane Society of the United States NHA is committed to finding responsible homes, controlling pet overpopulation and promoting the humane treatment of animals. HONORARY MEMBERS John O. Colton Julia C. Colton EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Joy Beach Paw’t It On Your Calendar Feline Frenzy In celebration of Adopt a Cat Month, help us find 100 cats and kittens their forever homes during the month of June. Dog Day Festival Don’t miss this nationally recognized day of fun for all things dog! Mark your calendars for September 22nd and join us at Centennial Park. For more details on these events and more, visit us at www.nashvillehumane.org or follow us on Facebook. Unleashed (continued from pg 1) Bailey & Company, Judith Bright, Imogene + Willie, Love-Simone, Margaret Ellis, Marti McFli, Melissa Tabor, Ole Made Good, Prairie-Go-Round, Prophetik and Tuft Design. To conclude the evening, television host Shane Tallant served as our live auctioneer, allowing guests the opportunity to bid on all of the fabulous fashions just seen on the catwalk. Or shall we say “dog” walk? All in all, the event was a huge success for both the NHA, as well as our furry models. Through the generosity of our guests, the event raised $45,000 for the shelter, and all of the adoptable models for the evening found their forever homes, which is what it’s all about! If you missed it this year, or can’t wait to go again, mark your calendar for the 2013 Unleashed Dinner with Your Dog on January 26th! Thank you to our generous sponsors, without whom this evening would not have been possible: Pedigree, Lipman, National Shows 2, HCA/TriStar, Now Playing Nashville, The Farm at Natchez Trace, The Dog Spot, Blue Chip Pet Care, Five Points Animal Hospital, Baxter Bailey & Company, Yelp, H Three Events, Strolling Tables of Nashville, Nashville PAW, HER Magazine, Nashville Scene, WKRN News 2, Sir Speedy and Hutton Hotel. 2 The following people supported the Nashville Humane Association through tribute gifts between July 16, 2011 – March 14, 2012. Mild Winter May Cause Major Challenges for Our Pets We all enjoyed the mild winter, with no snow to shovel and no icy demolition derbies on the interstates. However, the favorable winter, with few belowfreezing temperatures, has caused an increase in the presence of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes as early as March of this year. These parasites are not just a nuisance: they can also cause major health problems for your pets. Fleas: Fleas can cause flea bite dermatitis and anemia, and even tapeworm. When your pet grooms himself, he may ingest the occasional flea. Fleas carrying tapeworm larvae can infect your pet with the parasite. Tapeworms are easily treated, but have been known to lead to weight loss and decreased activity in some animals. Ticks: Ticks can be a serious and not too uncommon problem in our region. Pets can become infected by one of more than fifteen tick-transmitted diseases. Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are just a few. Mosquito: Mosquitos carrying heartworm larvae, as a result of biting an infected animal, can transmit the parasite to healthy pets simply by biting them. The larvae is injected under the skin and, once mature, the adult heartworms migrate to the animal’s lungs and heart. “We tend to forget that bringing fleas and ticks into the house can allow the diseases to be passed on to humans,” says Dr. Louis Lembo “It is important to protect your animal and, in turn, you are protecting your family.” He states further, “Prevention is less costly than treatment. The average cost of a heartworm preventative is $5.00 - $7.00, whereas heartworm treatment can reach $1,000.00 - $1,500.00.” NHA’s Volunteer Program, by the Numbers… A quarter of the way through 2012, it’s already been a great year for volunteerism at NHA: new enthusiastic volunteers are trained each month, and current volunteers are constantly engaging in additional programs to best apply their skills and passions. Our staff is so grateful to team up with these hundreds of animal ambassadors in Middle Tennessee, who lend their time, energy and hearts to help fulfill our mission. NHA volunteer Jvaughn socializes two kittens in the kitty room. To see kitties at play, tune into NHA’s Kitty Cam during regular business hours. To quantify the huge impact we already feel and know volunteers make, please join us in celebrating the Volunteer Program’s 2011 successes: 244 Dog Walkers & Puppy Socializers contributed more than 2,500 hours of service with our canine population 139 Cat Socializers contributed more than 1,500 hours of service with their feline friends at NHA 38 Teddy’s Wagon adoption aides spent more than 1,000 hours off-site, resulting in more than 100 shelter dogs and cats finding their forever homes Prevention: The good news is that your local veterinarian has the solution for your pet. Visit your vet, and together you can decide among the many products available which is best for your pet. Additionally, keep your grass mowed, remove any standing water and trim low-hanging shrubs. As Dr. Lembo urges, “Prevention is the best answer for the upcoming flea/tick/ mosquito season.” 26 Community Pet Food Bank operators ensured that more than 175 qualifying animal-owning households received supplementary pet food and supplies from the Community Pet Food Bank, which stays stocked by generous donations from individuals and companies 18 Media Hounds helped to capture adorable and adoptable shelter animals through pictures and videos featured on the web and on TV 15 Clerical Assistants contributed more than 650 hours of service behind-the-scenes, keeping us in constant touch with our friends and donors like you! He is the most precious, intelligent, adorable gift I have ever given myself!” says Melanie Strothers of her new puppy Whopper (now named Freckle Face) Hosted at the home of Kathy and Martin Davis, on March 1, 2012, the event welcomed 70 plus members of NHA’s Top Tails Society, whose contributors donate a cumulative or one-time annual gift of $1,000 or more. Longtime supporters Laurie Eskind and Julianne Williams served as honorary chairs, alongside Top Tails Society founder Robin Patton. NHA staff members further enlivened the celebration by bringing two adorable shelter puppies, Whopper and Lacy. These lucky critters surely salivated over the delectable small bites guests enjoyed from Kristen Winston Catering, including warm tomato tartlets and sweet potato biscuits with diced Benton’s country ham. Irresistibly cuddly Whopper was adopted the very next morning by Top Tails donor and attendee, Melanie Strothers, and lovable Lacy was also scooped away to her forever home within a couple of days! In socializing with each other, and delighting in the company of these animals, guests were reminded of the mission of NHA and the impact of their charitable giving. The annual Top Tails reception was no doubt a success, raising more than $200,000, with smiles abounding! Kathy Davis and Harry Davis enjoy a moment with Lacy during the Top Tails reception. Tail-Tale Signs of Success: Josie Rusty Moore is a longtime friend of the Nashville Humane Association. On one of his many visits to the shelter, two years ago, Rusty noticed a 1 ½ year old Belgian Shepherd Mix, Bailey, available for adoption. There was an instant attraction! He inquired about her history to learn she’d been adopted and returned to the shelter three times. Each time, it was noted that she was “too much to handle.” While at home and work, Rusty couldn’t stop thinking about this sweet dog. He felt certain she was not problematic; she simply hadn’t found an owner that understood her needs. He made several visits to NHA specifically to take her for walks and practice basic commands, and in doing so, Rusty realized this was a very smart dog. Common for her breed, Bailey simply needed to stay busy. She needed a job! Rusty went home, talked it over with the family and returned the next day with his son to adopt Bailey. Upon arriving at NHA, they found an interested couple walking her. For 45 minutes, Rusty and his son waited, hoping someone else was not going to adopt “their” dog. Rusty and Josie share a celebratory “high five!” The long wait paid off for Rusty and Bailey, and they departed for home together. Rusty renamed her Josie, and he soon felt the dog’s high energy and drive, along with his motivation to properly train her, would benefit residents at nursing homes and children in schools. Josie frequents both now, and comes back to say hello at NHA, where she shows off a new trick and how well-behaved she has become. During her most recent visit to NHA, we were proudly informed that Josie is now an Official Member of the Davidson County Search & Rescue K9 Unit. Rusty exudes, “Josie is a smart girl!” And he knew she was capable of even more. It’s amazing what a shelter animal can accomplish! Let’s ALL give a “High Five” to Rusty and Josie! 6
