Macedonia Evangelical Lutheran Church Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion 8:15 & 10:30 Worship Service March 20, 2016 “When I was in want...my needs were supplied by the people who came from Macedonia." II Corinthians 11:9 1 Visitors, welcome to Macedonia. Please talk to one of today’s ushers if you have any questions or need help. We would like to make your worship with us more accessible and meaningful. The worship service is from the cranberry colored hymnal. Page numbers refer to the front of the hymnal. Hymns are numbered in the back two-thirds of the hymnal beginning with all 150 psalms. For your convenience, our ushers can assist you with Hearing Amplification Headsets. Youth Activity Bags are also available in the Narthex. Your child will find age appropriate books, crayons and other assorted items within the bag. After worship, please leave the bags at church so that others can enjoy and use each week. Our Nursery is located in the Educational Building and opens around 10:15AM. Staffed by one adult and one teen, your child will enjoy books, toys, games and playmates. All children are also welcome to join us in worship. If you need directions to the nursery, please ask one of the ushers. Holy Communion—Believing in the real presence of Christ, and by the invitation of the Lord, all are welcome to the table to celebrate Holy Communion. This sacrament, a tangible sign of God's grace, love, and forgiveness, in and through bread and wine, was instituted by Jesus on the night before his death. When it is time for Communion, please come forward at the ushers' invitation. Those who do not wish to receive the sacrament are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Let those serving the bread know if you, or your children, would like a blessing in lieu of communion as you come forward. Reception of Communion via one element (consuming only bread or only wine) is a fully valid reception of the sacrament. The Altar flowers are given to the Glory of God. Please remember in your prayers: Linda Mahan, Jan Davis, Rick Dodson, Tom Lynch, Catherine Berger, *Greg Myers, Angelo Stanco, Pastor Gary Weant, Sharon Warren, Wendy Coontz, *George Schenck, Ethel Tomes, *Alex Peter, Audrey Brady, Ray Means, Linda Johnson, *Estelle Petersen, *Mel Petersen, Janice Kitch, Bill English, *Betty Davis, Kristen Johannsen, Pat Hatley, *Imogene Myers, Lynn Williams, * Helen Frenke, Jeanette Humphrey, * Les Van Fleet, *Chuck Braxton. 2 Sunday, March 20, 2016 Palm Sunday/Sunday of The Passion Setting Four (ELW) – 8:15 & 10:30 INTRODUCTION The voice of the suffering savior, Jesus, can be heard in the prophet Isaiah’s words and the pleading of the psalm. We are invited into the agony of our Lord in the extended reading of the story of Jesus’ passion. In the second reading, we who have put on Christ in holy baptism are urged to let the mind of Christ be our own. Lent leads us to this holy moment. Embrace it. GATHERING CALL TO WORSHIP (10:30) Entrance into Jerusalem Chancel Choir Wes Cameron Stand PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL Luke 19:28-40 Pew Bible, page 101, NT Before the reading: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the nineteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. BLESSING OF THE PALMS The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. (A brief silence is kept) We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever. Amen. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 855 Crown Him with Many Crowns DIADEMATA PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Sit 3 FIRST READING Isaiah 50:4-9a Pew Bible, page 833, OT After the reading: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 31:9-16 At the 8:15 service the Psalm is read responsively. At the 10:30 service the Cantor intones the first half of each verse and the congregation intones the second half (in bold). 9 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I | am in trouble; my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat | and my belly. 10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my | years with sighing; my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones | are consumed. 11 I am the scorn of my enemies, a disgrace to my neighbors, a dismay to | my acquaintances; when they see me in the street | they avoid me. 12 Like the dead I am forgotten, | out of mind; I am as useless as a | broken pot. 13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is | all around; they put their heads together against me; they plot to | take my life. 14 But as for me, I have trusted in | you, O Lord. I have said, “You | are my God. 15 My times are | in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who | persecute me. 16 Let your face shine up- | on your servant; save me in your | steadfast love.” SECOND READING Philippians 2:5-11 Pew Bible, page 240, NT After the reading: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Congregation sings the Acclamation, followed by the verse. The Acclamation is then repeated. 4 GOSPEL VERSE Christ humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death | on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above | ev’ry name. MEDITATION Pastor Richard Goeres GOSPEL Luke 22:14--23:56 Pew Bible, page 95 NT Before the reading: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty second chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.
